On 23rd April – the official UNESCO international day of the book – people everywhere can receive gifted copies of one of the 25 books that have been chosen to mark World Book Night 2012 and, in a Pinterest poll organised by the Book People, the public has chosen Markus Zusak’s ‘The Book Thief’ as their favourite title in the collection.
World Book Night is an annual event that works to celebrate the joy of reading and encourage those that normally shy away from this fantastic hobby to get back into it. It’s set to take place on April 23rd and a total of 25 fiction books have been whittled down from a huge selection. These books include everything from historical novels to fantasy fiction, so there’s something for everyone.
“We fully support the ethos behind World Book Night,” said Lindsay Eyers of the Book People.
“Nowadays, one in six has difficulty with reading and writing, and literacy is one of the most important skills a person can have.
“To celebrate World Book Night we asked our customers and followers on social networking sites to choose their favourite title on a special Pinterest poll and‘The Book Thief’ was the winner.”
In the week running up to 23rd April ‘givers’ that have signed up to take part in the event can pick up 24 copies of their chosen title from the top 25, all of which will be printed as special World Book Night editions. The givers will then distribute every copy to friends, family, colleagues and even strangers that wouldn’t normally visit their local bookshop to buy new books.
There will also be a number of events held to celebrate World Book Night in areas across the UK, and many other countries will be involved, including Ireland, the USA and Germany.
All of the books included in the World Book Night top 25 can be bought from the Book People now and, as per the bookseller, are available with great discounts to help in saving money when shopping.
