Industry analysts from Millennium India, a leading e-commerce advisory and supplier of advanced POS technology to Indian retailers, say that the E-commerce growth in India has been contributed by the arrival of leading names – Flipkart, Amazon, Paytm Mall, Zomato, Bigbasket, Naaptol, Urban Ladder, etc, which have forayed into newer fields to address the daily needs of customers.

For example, Flipkart, Amazon and Jio are in the process of integrating nearby grocery shops to provide customers the pleasure of shopping daily need items, fruits and veggie from home, says Kiran Bhargava, an industry analyst based in Mumbai.

According to Bhaskar Venkatraman, CEO and Director of JusTransact.com, which is India’s only e-commerce portal for Point of Sale (POS) electronic products, says: “E-commerce in India has seen vertical growth over a decade and is now in the consolidating mode spreading its base to several other fields to satisfy growing customer demands. Customers, who are empowered by mobile technology, want everything online.  Today’s shoppers are highly demanding and tech-savvy which forces retailers to  open all doors – physical, internet, mobile, land-line, desktop/smart mobile/tablets, O2O, cloud- to reach them and vice-versa. No one wants to lose-out customers because of lack of technology.”

“E-commerce is getting further boost due to cheaper smartphones and increased internet users, and this trend is catching up fast in tier II and III cities as well,” adds Bhaskar, who also heads Millennium India.

Not only, groceries, customers can now order their daily needs and essential items such as furniture, electrical and electronic items, hardware, home utility items, laundry services, food from their smart phones, whose penetration and internet connectivity and also overwhelming online presence by young population and expanding middle class are catapulting the number of digital buyers in India.

The online retail space has been witnessing fierce competition in the recent times for the larger pie with market leader Flipkart (which has been taken over by Walmart recently), Amazon and Paytm Mall (backed by Softbank and Alibaba) infusing huge capital for improved logistic and payment system and also planning to woo customers with attractive discounts on competitive products.

Though as of now, no one has emerged clear winner of the e-commerce space in India, one can surely say that coming months will be more crucial for these entities and customers are in for delightful surprises with deep discount offers, concludes Bhaskar.

Amazon to create more than 1,500 full-time jobs with its first Missouri fulfillment center

SEATTLE, 2018-Mar-09 — /EPR Retail News/ — Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) today (Mar. 7, 2018) announced plans for the first Missouri fulfillment center to be located in St. Peters, creating more than 1,500 full-time jobs with benefits and opportunities to engage with Amazon Robotics in a highly technological workplace. Amazon currently operates a sortation center in Hazelwood, where it employs hundreds of associates.

Amazon employees at the more than 800,000 square foot fulfillment center will pick, pack and ship small items to customers such as books, electronics and toys. The facility will feature innovative technology such as Amazon Robotics that will assist employees in fulfilling customer orders.

Amazon surpasses the milestone of 10,000 full-time employees in Illinois

SEATTLE, 2018-Mar-07 — /EPR Retail News/ — This year, Amazon will celebrate its third year fulfilling customer orders out of Illinois and surpassing the milestone of 10,000 full-time employees in the state with job opportunities for people with all types of experience, education and skill levels—from human resources, engineers and facilities technicians, to those seeking entry-level positions and on-the-job training.

Using Input-Output methodology and multipliers developed by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, Amazon estimates its investments in the state have created an additional 7,000 indirect jobs on top of the company’s direct hires.

Walmart Canada to utilize Food-X warehouse and delivery platform for online grocery shopping deliveries for Vancouver-area in summer 2018

Food-X, a subsidiary of Sustainable Produce Urban Delivery (SPUD), helps reduce waste and lower carbon footprint of growing home grocery delivery market

VANCOUVER, 2018-Mar-01 — /EPR Retail News/ — Walmart Canada and Sustainable Produce Urban Delivery (SPUD) announced today (February 21, 2018) an agreement to offer SPUD’s food delivery platform, Food-X Urban Delivery Inc. (Food-X), to Walmart.ca customers in Metro Vancouver. Food-X helps Walmart fulfill last mile home delivery and — through shared warehousing and consolidation of orders — reduces waste, truck trips and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Walmart Canada will begin using the Food-X warehouse and delivery platform for online grocery shopping deliveries for Vancouver-area Walmart.ca customers in summer 2018.

“Consumer demand for online grocery shopping is growing and that means more trucks on the road.” said Peter van Stolk, CEO at SPUD. “We have built a best-in-class platform to get food from the supplier to the kitchen while reducing waste, lowering emissions and lowering cost. Food-X comprises of a soon-to-be completed 74,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art warehouse with proprietary technology SPUD has been refining for the past 20 years, providing SPUD customers in the Vancouver-area with local, healthy food and produce. The facility will also have several bio-digesters used to compost meat, produce, and compostable packaging. Food-X is part of the larger SPUD ecosystem that includes home delivery, small store retail, commissary/food preparation services and distribution. The collaboration includes the launch of a new online grocery delivery service in Japan beginning in the third quarter of 2018. In addition, Walmart and Rakuten Kobo Inc. have formed an exclusive retail alliance that will enable Walmart to begin selling eBooks and audiobooks, as well as offer Rakuten Kobo eReaders, in Walmart stores and online at Walmart.com in the United States starting later this year.

Japan online grocery delivery service
Rakuten and Seiyu GK, a subsidiary of Walmart, have reached a basic agreement to establish a joint venture with the aim of launching a new online grocery delivery service in Japan, to be known as “Rakuten Seiyu Netsuper.” The new service is planned to be launched in the latter half of 2018.

Rakuten and Seiyu will launch a new online grocery delivery service leveraging each of the companies’ strengths to offer a more convenient shopping experience that meets the changing needs of customers in Japan. Rakuten Seiyu Netsuper will aim to increase fulfillment capacity, enrich the merchandise offering and improve convenience for the customer. The service will aim to increase capacity in 2018 with the establishment of a dedicated fulfilment center, in addition to offering deliveries from Seiyu stores.

The new service’s merchandise offering will showcase Seiyu’s twin strengths of “quality” and “low prices.” To serve the needs of customers increasingly short on time for preparation, the service will include not only fresh produce and daily consumables but also a rich lineup of convenient items such as cut vegetables, partially-prepared foods and ready-meal kits, as well as popular local gourmet products from merchants on the Rakuten Ichiba marketplace.

Furthermore, the new service will utilize Rakuten’s deep expertise in e-commerce to offer a site with an optimized user experience, as well as leveraging big data and AI to offer a more personalized merchandise offering.

Customers using the new service will enjoy the benefit of being able to earn and use Rakuten Super Points, also allowing them to use their points on more than 70 services within the Rakuten ecosystem.

Rakuten Kobo U.S. eReading Service
As part of this alliance, Walmart will become Rakuten Kobo’s exclusive mass retail partner for the Kobo brand in the U.S., offering Kobo’s nearly six million titles from thousands of publishers and hundreds of thousands of authors to Walmart.com customers. Walmart.com will offer eBooks and audiobooks for sale later this year. Walmart will also sell digital book cards in stores, enabling more than 4,000 stores to carry a broader selection of books for customers.

All eBook content will be accessible through a Walmart/Kobo co-branded app available on all iOS and Android devices, a desktop app and Kobo e-Readers, which will also be sold at Walmart later this year.

Arteixo, Spain, 2018-Jan-29 — /EPR Retail News/ — Tomorrow Zara unveils its first store anywhere in the world designed primarily for ordering and collecting of online orders. The store will be open until May at London’s Westfield  Stratford  shopping centre, while the chain’s flagship store in the centre is refurbished and extended.

The flagship store is being doubled in size to 4,500 square metres. When it reopens in May, it will feature a radical new store concept with technology at its heart designed to transform the customer shopping experience.

The chairman and CEO of Inditex, Pablo Isla, stressed the relevance of both concepts, saying that they mark “another milestone in our strategy of integrating our stores with the online world, which defines our identity as a business”.

The pop-up store spans nearly 200 square metres and offers a select choice of women’s and men’s clothing for online purchase directly in-store, along with the rest of the brand’s extensive fashion range.

Store staff will be on hand with mobile devices to assist customers, who will be given the choice of receiving their orders within the same day, if placed before 2pm, or the next day, if placed in the afternoon. Payments are also made easier thanks to an innovative card terminal system operated via Bluetooth. The store will also facilitate returns and exchanges.

Among other innovations, this pop-up store boasts a product recommendation system based on information screens embedded into mirrors. Once customers scan an item using radio frequency identification (RFID) technology, the system can bring up, in the right size, multiple choices for coordinating and combining the item they are trying on with other garments and accessories.

Next week work will begin on expanding and refurbishing the existing Zara store in Westfield Stratford, which is due to re-open in May. The new store will stretch to 4,500 square metres and will be the first Zara store in the world to offer four sections: in addition to the traditional women’s, men’s and kids’ lines, Zara is adding a dedicated area for the collection of online orders, in keeping with the company’s online integration strategy.

This new concept attempts to further enhance the in-store shopping experience by adding new customer services. The store, which will feature a new interior design, will stand out for its two-storey façade without windows in the first floor, providing a transparent view of the store’s architectural features and collections. The glass façade on the second floor will be equipped with a number of sensors which will project images from the current collections onto the glass when shoppers approach it. It is also worth highlighting the back-lit ceiling designed to provide continuous and comfortable light.

The new store will feature an automated online order collection point serviced by two small warehouses which will enable shoppers to pick up purchases made on www.zara.com whenever it suits them. This system is designed around an optical barcode reader which scans the QR code or accepts the PIN codes received by customers when they place orders online. In just a few seconds, it delivers the order to a mailbox from which the customer can collect it. Behind the scenes, a dynamic robot moves through a small warehouse with the capacity to handle 2,400 packages simultaneously.

All this new technology is oriented towards creating a unique shopping experience in which the latest developments make  fashion trends stand out even more. Store customers will be able to pay using their mobile phones, via either the Zara app or the Inditex Group app, InWallet, and there will also be a self-checkout area to complement the regular cashier desks, which will speed up the payment process. This system will automatically identify the garments being purchased so that customers only have to confirm their items on a screen before using their card or mobiles to pay for them. Then they can choose to print out their receipts or store them automatically in their mobile handsets.

In keeping with Inditex’s eco-efficient store programme the Zara store in Stratford will also be equipped with smart systems for reducing emissions and saving energy.

Berlin, 2018-Jan-16 — /EPR Retail News/ — Zalando, the leading online fashion platform in Europe, will extend the Stradella fulfillment center with its partner Fiege. In the course of 2018 two additional halls will be added and the capacity will double from about 20,000 sqm to about 40,000 sqm. The number of employees will increase to over 550. Fiege has overseen managing the Stradella site since it was opened in late 2015 and will continue to do so along with the expansion.

The investment into the Stradella fulfilment center and the recent investment in the Verona region, will not only strengthen the service offered to Italian customers but will also speed up the deliveries in Zalando’s Southern European markets. In December 2017 Zalando announced its plans to open a new fulfilment center for the Southern European Market. The new 130,000 sqm site will be located in Nogarole Rocca close to Verona and will create over 1,000 jobs in the medium-term.

Leeds, UK, 2018-Jan-09 — /EPR Retail News/ — In a first for the UK, a new, 16ft foot tall and 8ft wide, automated parcel tower has been installed at Asda’s Trafford Park store following a successful trial by parent company Walmart in the US.

The tower, which acts as a giant parcel vending machine, is located inside the store so customers can pick up their online order in less than 60 seconds and will also take returns.

Customers can choose from thousands of items available on www.george.com from their computer or smartphone, and select the store at checkout. When customers visit the store, they scan a barcode sent to their smartphone at the Parcel Tower to receive their order. The service is also available for selected third party partners including Asos, Missguided and Decathlon.

In November 2015, Asda launched its ‘toyou’ service, the UK’s first end-to-end parcel solution which uses minute-by-minute tracking and it allows consumers to return or collect purchases from third party online retailers at more than 600 Asda stores. Parcels can also be collected and returned from Asda petrol forecourts and Click & Collect points across the country.

This new technology offers a unique concept giving customers a quicker and more convenient way to collect parcels, which has seen over 100 parcel towers installed across Walmart in the US. Asda Trafford Park is the first store in the UK to house the new technology.

Trafford Park’s Parcel Tower was installed at the end of last week as a proof of concept, it can hold up to 500 parcels and has already served 1,500 local customers already.
