The Royal Mint Reveals The Official London 2012 Olympic And Paralympic Coins

The Royal Mint has announced that two British students have had the honour of designing the official UK coins to celebrate the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The two designs – one for the Olympic Games and one for the Paralympic Games – will soon be in the hands of Games enthusiasts around the world, ahead of next summer’s Games.

Since the Helsinki summer Olympic Games in 1952 it has been tradition for commemorative coins to be struck in celebration of the Games. Now 24 year old architectural student Saiman Miah from Birmingham, and mature graphic and media design graduate Pippa Sanderson from Malvern, Worcestershire, have joined the artistic elite, creating two £5 coins which will be permanent and much-treasured mementos of London 2012.

The winning designs of the London 2012 coins were selected following a Royal Mint competition for art and design students attending higher education colleges and universities across the UK. Students were challenged to create a design celebrating the capital’s role as host city of London 2012, including the Olympic and Paralympic Games logos. Designs were requested that could be symbolic or literal and could involve the use of emblems or lettering.

As well as the honour of designing the official London 2012 Olympic coins the winners also receive £5,000 prize money. The coins, both of which are UK legal tender, will go on sale this month and are expected to be collected by thousands of Games enthusiasts around the world.

The winning designer of the official Olympic coin, Saiman Miah, is currently studying for his Master’s degree at the Birmingham School of Architecture. The inspiration for his design came from his love of architecture and includes a detailed impression of London’s iconic skyline. Saiman also incorporates pictograms of athletes around the edge of the skyline to create a clock face referencing to another London icon, Big Ben.

Pippa Sanderson, who recently graduated with a First Class Honours Degree in Graphic and Media Design at Hereford College of Arts, designed the London 2012 Paralympic Coin.

Taking inspiration from the Games, Pippa’s design celebrates accuracy, manoeuvrability and speed by using the round shape of the coin along with circles found in the Games. Split into these four sections, her design features a spoked wheel for manoeuvrability, a target for accuracy and a stopwatch for speed and includes the face of Big Ben to represent London.

The Royal Mint was established over 1,000 years ago and has a long and distinguished history of commemorating important national events. With the Olympic and Paralympic Games and Her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee both taking place next year, the eyes of the world will be on London and the UK; and both Saiman and Pippa have created coins that will be treasured reminders of the global celebration.

Halfords Helps Dallaglio And Flintoff Into The Saddle For Cycle Slam 2012

Cycle Slam is a gruelling 2,817km charity cycle ride, from Olympia, Greece to the Olympic Park, London, to be undertaken by two former England captains and sporting legends, Lawrence Dallaglio and Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff, and a team of 400 riders.

Freddie and Lawrence will be riding Boardman Performance Series Road Pro Carbon bikes supplied exclusively by Halfords. The retailer is also sending a team of mechanics, all highly experienced in maintaining road and mountain bikes, to provide technical support and the repairs and replacement parts that will be needed keep the riders on the road.

The 22 day ride starts on St George’s Day (April 23) 2012 and involves five non-stop stages of gruelling terrain across Europe. Riders aim to raise £2,012,000 for the Dallaglio Foundation (supporting Cancer Research UK) and the AF Foundation (a children’s charity raising funds to build, develop and improve child rehabilitation and physiotherapy units throughout the UK) as well as Virgin Unite (the not-for-profit foundation, helping young people in the UK to increase their employability and entrepreneurialism, as well as tackling other important issues for young people).

Penny-Wise Motorists Spend Spare Car Cash

Cash-strapped British motorists are plundering loose change from their cars to the tune of an estimated £27million, as fears over the economy take hold.

A new report by Halfords shows there has been a 16 per cent drop in the amount of petty cash kept in the country’s 34 million registered vehicles over the past 12 months.

Motorists feeling the pinch are raiding the stash of coins left in the ashtray and door side pockets, which they used to save to pay for parking and the occasional snack or drink.

The study, which Halfords has dubbed the “loose change economic index”, has revealed that today motorists knowingly keep on average £4.60 in their car, a significant drop from a year ago when £5.40 was the average amount stored in vehicles.

Across the UK, that translates from an estimated £183 million kept in cars 12 months ago, down to £156.4 million worth of small change in vehicles today.

The survey of over 2000 drivers asked them to keep a record of spare cash left in vehicles over a 12-month period. Over three quarters of those polled said they deliberately left spare change in the car or van to pay for parking in towns or at railway stations.

Just over a quarter (26 per cent) said they used the cash to buy the occasional drink or snack when filling up with petrol or at a motorway service station, although half of motorists said they were buying fewer treats than a year ago.

One in 12 (8 per cent) said they kept a £10 note hidden in the car in case they ran out of petrol, down from 10 per cent who kept the same emergency cash a year earlier and 82 per cent said they now regularly check their car for dropped and lost coins.

The downturn of 16 per cent in the amount of money left in cars over the past 12 months reflects a decline in disposable income and is three times the annual inflation rate, which latest figures showed running at 5.2 per cent. During that time petrol has gone up from an average 117.7p a litre to 134.5p a litre.

Debenhams Reveals Men Smell More Fragrant As They Age

Debenhams has revealed the results of new research* which show that a man’s choice of fragrance alters dramatically with advancing years, resulting in men in their sixties and above selecting and piling on the strongest of scents.

The sense of smell weakens in people who are their sixties hence why older generations prefer impactful, longer lasting perfumes, often opting for classic, masculine pongs from the likes of Aramis and Davidoff.

Unlike today’s man who on average begins to use cologne from the age of 14 years old, sexagenarians and their older brothers didn’t grow up wearing fragrance and most men in this age group (77 per cent) claimed to only start wearing aftershave at the age of 30 years old.

Now that wearing scent is an acceptable part of everyday male grooming, it seems those born in 1951 and earlier are making up for lost time and ‘splashing it on all over’ with 56 per cent saying they respray three times a day, more than any other age group.

Ruth Attridge, spokesperson for Debenhams said: “No longer the fusty Steptoe or the less-than-fragrant Compo, the older generation has embraced the fragrance hall and is creating a buzz in the beauty industry.

“Choosing a signature scent can be a challenge whatever your age however, before reaching for another spritz, we’d always advise remembering that a ‘man doesn’t have to try too hard’.”

The older generation still has a little way to go to match up to their sons in their late twenties and thirties. Research has shown that 63 per cent of men in this age group have a ‘fragrance wardrobe’ of five or more scents, with men citing “mood”, “occasion” and “trend” for why they experiment.

They were also the age bracket most likely to be influenced by the women in their life with 71 per cent of men claiming their wife or girlfriend has a say in their smell.

Despite their bad rap for piling on the pong, it is fresh, often unisex fragrances that are bought most frequently by men in their teens and early twenties. Bottle design and association with celebrities and sports proved major motivations for purchases in this age group.

As men reach their forties and fifties, sex sells resulting in a sales boom for the spicy and musky fragrance sector. The baby boomers have ascertained what fragrance they like and therefore spend more but buy less, investing in premium, designer brands such as Chanel, Tom Ford and Bvlgari.

Attridge added: “This research is massively important as we enter the Christmas shopping period.

“Fragrance is one of our most popular gifts for men and we can now provide further training for our fragrance consultants to help busy shoppers pick the right perfume, whether it’s for your Great Uncle Bob or your image-conscious teenage son.

“We will be managing our stock levels accordingly to make sure that no one ends up with a dusty bottle of Old Spice left on the shelf year after year.”
