New Research From Displaysense Suggests That Using Certain Colours Could Boost Retail Store Performance And Increase Product Appeal This Christmas Period

Following research from the University of Rochester that indicated women wearing red are more appealing to men, further research undertaken by Displaysense suggests that stores can influence the shopping patterns of their customers simply by re-colouring their shop fittings.

A simple colour test undertaken by the retail display company indicated that just under 70% of the participants were more drawn to a particular colour across a vast range of everyday items.

Understanding consumer buying patterns is particularly important for businesses trying to boost sales this Christmas period as the looming recession and increasing unemployment has placed fear in the minds of the general consumer who are now looking to save rather than spend.

The research undertaken by Displaysense highlights some interesting consumer behaviour between certain colours and potential spending patterns. For example 20% of participants suggested that the use of brighter colours distracted their attention away from products in a shop display. In contrast, when red is used on shop displays and fittings, men are more drawn to the products.

This type of research is of great interest to retailers such as jewelers, who could increase the chances of attracting the attention of men who are shopping for Christmas presents for their wife, girlfriend or partner by using red appropriately in their stores, such as red counter top display cases or shelving.

Although the study of colours on the human psyche is not new, Displaysense are looking to capitalise on this research by sourcing a line of red products including mannequins anddisplay cabinets that would fit in well as we head towards the peak Christmas period.

Red, which is said to be the most emotionally intense of all the colours has been known to cause various changes within our bodies, including a faster heart beat, deeper breathing and a release of endorphins. The survey gathered information about wedding budgets, location, guest count, wedding party size, and how the economy is affecting wedding planning in general.

A majority of respondents (57%) are having their wedding within the next 2 months, wishes to thank our many customers who, amidst the frenzy of wedding planning, participated in this survey. Especially since most (90%) are doing the planning themselves, with help from family and friends, and not hiring a professional wedding planner.

Since budgets are a concern for many, It looks like there’s a major spread in wedding budgets. About 25% are planning a wedding on a budget of less than $10,000, while 25% have wedding budgets over $25,001. The remaining 50% are somewhere in between, with 38% reporting in the range of $10,001 to $20,000.

“Location, location, location” as the saying goes, and roughly a quarter (25%) are having the reception at a hotel, and 10% have opted to host their nuptials at a country club. About 6% of couples selected a destination wedding, while a majority (55%) reported they are finding another type of venue to rent for the event and reception.

Size matters for this year’s brides, and by that we mean the size of the wedding party. Most couples (48%) will have between 5 to 8 people, while 37% of respondents have 9 or more bridesmaids and attendants. The trend seems to lean toward larger, more inclusive wedding parties, which leads us to the number of invited guests. Nearly 40% report they will have a guest count of more than 200 and 14% say their total guest count is under 100. A good 34% are inviting 100 to 150 guests.

As for cutting costs and wedding budgets, 68% said they’ve lowered their budgets by $1,000 or less. However, the small cuts they are making may not have a big impact on the actual wedding. Items that brides generally won’t skimp on are wedding gowns, photography and wedding rings.

When asked more specifically about what they would and would not change, most are not significantly altering music, location, reception style, or dress. Instead, they are more likely to adjust the cost of invitations, wedding favors, bridal accessories and gifts for the bridal party (combined, 46% of respondents said they would make changes in these 3 areas).

“When’s the event?” I’d enquire.

“Umm, it’s today,” they’d say, almost every time. “It doesn’t matter what I get, I just want to buy her something nice.”

Money was hardly ever an object – what was important was getting her something quickly. They’d always head straight for the obvious gifts – a very predictable piece of jewellery. And then they’d get to the till and say, “I’m awful at wrapping things up, could you gift-wrap it for me?” 

Women, on the other hand, would come into the shop and sigh over the lovely things they’d like to own. “I can’t buy it for myself because it would just be so self indulgent,’’ they’d say, looking longingly at a tiny bottle of expensive bath oil or a pink lariat necklace in rose quartz and silver. “Maybe my husband will get me one for my birthday.”

This gave me the idea for our website supplying beautiful gifts for men to buy to give to the women they love. I reasoned that present buying and giving should be an enjoyable and rewarding experience for everyone involved, yet it clearly wasn’t something that the guys were enjoying one bit. 

First I looked at other websites purporting to sell a similar dream but they were very predictable and sold chocolates and the kind of black and red lingerie that blokes think women like but actually women don’t want to be seen dead in. And slowly I realised there was a niche here that was ripe for the picking. 

So I set up the website I Chose It (, with my brother Nigel. I ran everything past him to get a male point of view, and together we came up with a selection of jewellery, bath products, candles, homeware, clothes and accessories. We sourced a lot of our products locally to our homes in Sussex and it felt good to support small businesses.

The IMRG, the leading industry body for global e-retailing, is expecting £320 million to be spent online on the 8th December, with the peak between 1pm and 2pm. It forecast that UK shoppers will spend £13.16 billion online in the final quarter of 2008, some £215 each.

This is 15% higher than the same period a year ago, but the growth is down from a 54% rise a year ago.

“Retailers and suppliers will be under extreme pressure to price competitively this year,” said IMRG chief executive James Roper.

The predictions are drawn from data obtained from 60 UK online retail sites.

Burton announce VAT price reductions will be passed on to all customers from the 1st December

Following The Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling’s decision to cut Value Added Tax (VAT) from 17.5 per cent to 15 per cent, Sir Philip Green’s Arcadia Group has released a statement on behalf of a group of the high street’s most powerful retailers, confirming they will pass the full VAT cut onto their customers.

The change in the VAT rate will mean huge changes for all the shops in the Arcadia group, as all shelving and register prices will need to be updated. However, Burton, Arcadia, Mosaic Fashions, Bhs, Marks & Spencer, New Look and Next all confirmed in the statement they planned to pass the 2.5% VAT cut on to customers on Monday, or soon afterwards.

The group of retailers covers some of the biggest names on the high street, including; Topshop, Topman, Wallis, Dorothy Perkins, Miss Selfridge, Evans, Burton, Bhs, Oasis, Coast, Karen Millen, Warehouse, Principles, Shoe Studio Group, Jane Norman, New Look and Next fascias.

The statement by Sir Philip said: “Following the recent announcement reducing VAT from 17.5% to 15%, equating to a price reduction of 2.13%, we are pleased to confirm that it is our intention to pass the benefit of this reduction onto our customers.”

The price reduction will be given on standard rated product and will be applied on, or as soon after Monday December 1 as possible.

The statement added that this would, “allow for the complexities of implementing the changes required.”

It is unclear how the price cuts will be implemented, however many retailers are expected to take off the discount at the till point rather than by re-ticketing stock.

For Burton, all mens clothing, mens suits and mens accessories will be adjusted at point of purchase as of 1st December 2008.
