Co-operative named Most Improved Supermarket at Welfare Awards

The Co-operative has been named “Most Improved Supermarket” at Compassion in World Farming’s annual Good Farm Animal Welfare Awards.

The accolade was presented to the retailer because of its move to convert all of its own-brand fresh pork and sausages to its higher welfare Elmwood standard earlier this year.

The Co-operative worked with a group of specialist British pig farmers to identify issues regarding the welfare of the sows and piglets throughout the farming process. The Elmwood standard includes reduced transport time, increased natural light, straw bedding, environmental enrichments and a healthier diet for the pigs.

The retailer’s move to extend the Elmwood standard to fresh pork followed the conversion of all its fresh own-brand British chicken to Elmwood or above, starting with fresh whole chickens in October 2007.

The Co-operative’s Elmwood British chicken range now also includes own-brand fresh chicken fillets and portions, as well as fresh chicken products including barbecue, breaded, flavoured and ready-to-eat roast and flavoured chicken. In 2010, Elmwood was rolled out to include all own-brand whole turkeys, crowns and fresh plain turkey products – including fillets, steaks, mince and pieces.

The Co-operative also won a Good Dairy Award, partly in recognition of its forthcoming move in August to a dedicated milk producer scheme, whereby some 240 British dairy farmers will receive a support package including a price premium in return for high standards in animal welfare.

Halfords Figures Reveal The True Cost Of Bike Theft In The UK

Bike thefts could be costing British cyclists more than £80 million a year, new figures from Halfords reveal.*

According to police crime statistics, a total of 115,147 bikes were reported stolen in the UK last year. But the actual figure is much higher, according to the British Crime Survey, due to a high proportion of thefts that are unreported.

It estimates the true number is nearer 533,000, the equivalent of a bike going missing every minute, and means almost 80% of owners are failing to report thefts. National figures** show reported bike crime is up 4% and unreported up 12%.

The full extent of the problem has been revealed by cycle and leisure retailer Halfords, who obtained the latest theft figures from each UK police force and collated them to reveal a disturbing nationwide picture.

The growth in bike thefts has come as the country experiences a resurgence in bicycle use, with 12% of adults regular cycle users and bike sales exceeding £2.1 billion last year. Six per cent of bikes purchased are worth over £1000.

In terms of regional variations, not surprisingly the problem of stolen bikes is worst in London with 21,315 instances reported to the Met in 2010 with Westminster having the highest rate of theft (1,898).

Thames Valley had the second highest rate with 6,060 instances reported in 2010. This was followed by Greater Manchester (5,185) and Cambridgeshire (4,477). Thames Valley and Cambridgeshire contain university cities of Oxford and Cambridge which account for much of the crime in those areas.

Fife has the best record for bike theft, the east coast area in Scotland only reporting 78 thefts in the past year, despite it including the student town of St Andrews where there is high bike ownership. There were 24 times more thefts in Westminster than in the whole of Fife.

The worst area in Scotland was Strathclyde, which includes Glasgow. It recorded 2081 thefts, followed closely by Lothian and Border with 2026.

Over two thirds of bike theft occurs in or around a victim’s home and research shows that while most cyclists lock their bikes when leaving them on the street, they are often unlocked when stored at a residence.*** The high number of unreported theft is put down to the belief that police will not catch the offender and that many bikes on the road are second hand.

Halfords cycling expert Paul Tomlinson said: “The scale of the bike theft is quite staggering and it can be devastating when you have bought your dream bike only to have it stolen.

“It demonstrates the need for cyclists to take precautions. We recommend bolt-cutter proof locks, because heavy-duty locks are a much better deterrent, and bike marking for all cycles.

“All Halfords locks are independently tested and rated Bronze, Silver or Gold depending on the length of time it would take a thief to break the lock and what level of equipment they would need.

“Our in-store experts are on hand to advise you on the best way to keep your cycle safe, such as purchasing the most appropriate heavy duty lock for your bike and investing in a bike tagging kit, so that it can be identified if it is ever stolen and recovered by police.”

After revealing the price of cycle theft, Halfords is calling for a unified approach to tackling the crime.

Paul Tomlinson added: “It is clear that this is a nationwide problem and many initiatives are left to local forces. We urge customers to keep their bikes secure but we would like to see more co-ordination in tackling thefts once they have occurred.”

The Police say one of the biggest problems is not recovering bikes, but finding out who owns them and they urge cyclists to take three simple steps to help reduce crime.

1) Record the details of the bike by getting it marked.
2) Register on one of the number of websites where details can be left3) Report if your bike is stolen.

Debenhams Reveals Shopping Gene Exists Through Nurture Not Nature

Debenhams has revealed that the reason why women shop so much is down to nurture as opposed to nature, as women are taught to shop so much by their own mothers.

Debenhams commissioned a study into the shopping gene following sales figures showing that baby girl’s clothing is out selling clothes for baby boys by a colossal 20%.

Research shows that by the time children reach the age of four, infant girls have a fifth more clothes possessed by a boy of similar age. This figure does not include the likes of Victoria Beckham who will have at least double this amount for her new born baby girl Harper Seven.

David Beckham has recently admitted that he is scared that his house will turn entirely pink following the arrival of his new baby daughter.

Since mothers do most of the clothes shopping for their children, this must mean that they instinctively instill a much greater need for clothes in young girls from a very young age.

This suggests that women are not born with the shopping gene but are brought up that way through years of exposure to high levels of fashion and shopping. Other mums who are sure to already have extensive wardrobes for their daughters include Abbey Clancy, Holly Willoughby and Pink.

The sales results have been interpreted for Debenhams by one of Britain’s leading psychologists.

“Human society puts a great deal of emphasis on female appearance and this will inevitably result in more clothes being purchased for girls than boys,” said Dr. Karen J. Pine, professor of developmental psychology, University of Hertfordshire.

“Parents encourage the importance of clothes through leisure activities such as shopping and play that involves dressing up.

“Whilst Dads are taking their sons out for football matches, women are taking their little girls shopping and encouraging them to take more of an interest in fashion.

“However in the animal world this pattern reverses, for example, in lions, ducks and peacocks, it’s the males who have more adornments, and the females who are plain.”

Ed Watson, Debenhams’ head of PR added: “We aim to cater equally for baby boys and baby girls but it looks like the mums the word on this one and the boys aren’t even getting a look in”.

This clearly proves that the shopping gene is nurture and not nature. Mothers are literally turning their daughters into mini-me’s by providing them with much more clothes than what they give to their sons.

Recent figures suggest that the market for diamond jewellery in the near future is expected to be driven by increased growth in India, China and the Gulf.

However, with worldwide reserves of diamonds at an all-time low, this new growth in Eastern countries means the balance between supply and demand is set to become more mismatched than ever; forecasts warn that demand is likely to outpace lower levels of diamond supply for many years to come.

With diamonds only getting rarer, it’s likely that the value of diamonds will continue to ascend on a global scale in the same way that gold and silver prices have already, increasing the natural treasure’s worth in the long term.

Although diamond prices have already begun to reflect the imbalance between supply and demand, the view that diamonds are an ‘investment vehicle’ that has the potential to grow – or at least remain the same – means customers are continuing to buy.

When compared to the inflated prices of gold, diamonds also – for the time being – pose a more affordable alternative in an unsteady economy.

It is yet to be seen how the rising value of diamonds will affect the production and/or prices of popular jewellery brands, popular in both the East and West, which feature diamond-encrusted pieces in their collections. For now, however, fans of Pandora jewellery and the like need not worry.

OMEGA Watches to be US PGA Timekeeper

Already a sponsor of numerous golfing tournaments around the world, OMEGA Watcheshas renewed and expanded its links with the US PGA Tour.

The Swiss watches brand has signed a five year deal to be the organisation’s Official Timekeeper. The new partnership will be launched at the 2011 PGA Championship at the Atlanta Athletic Club which begins on 8 August and will run through to the PGA’s Centennial year celebrations in 2016.

The new deal will encompass two of golf’s best known events, the PGA Championship and the Ryder Cup, alongside a number of popular subsidiary contests. The commitment from the watch manufacturer includes advertising on TV broadcasts of the sport and marketing support for the PGA’s Player development efforts.

As the Official Timekeeper of The PGA of America, the company will also provide timings and other support to the Senior PGA Championship, the PGA Championship and Grand Slam of Golf, and the Official Licensee of the 2012 and 2014 Ryder Cup. The sponsor also allows the manufacturer presenting Sponsor rights at certain events and the status of Official Timekeeper of the Professional National Championship.

As well as organising prestigious golf events, the US PGA also organises representation and accreditation for the 27,000 men and women PGA professionals who work with golf clubs as golf tutors, course managers and other associated roles.

OMEGA watches also supports golf outside of the United States, serving as title sponsor of the European Masters, the Mission Hills World Cup of Golf and the OMEGA watches Dubai Desert Classic.
