Toys 4 Puerto Rico toy drive launched to bring smiles to thousands of children affected by Hurricane Maria

New York, NY, 2017-Dec-14 — /EPR Retail News/ — Lin-Manuel Miranda, Toys“R”Us®, Telemundo, Hispanic Federation, and R.Evolución Latina are partnering to bring toys and smiles to the thousands of children affected by Hurricane Maria this Three Kings Day with the launch of Toys 4 Puerto Rico. The toy drive aims to send 10,000 toys to children throughout the island and begins today online at Toysrus.com/Toys4PuertoRico, with donations accepted until Tuesday, January 2.

Supporters can visit Toysrus.com/Toys4PuertoRico to give a gift of $5, $10, and $20 which will be used to purchase from a suggested list of toys featured on the website. Hispanic Federation and partner organization R.Evolución Latina will handle the distribution of the purchased items, and ensure that dozens of community partners receive gifts for a mix of ages.

On Three Kings Day (Saturday, January 6, 2018), the donated toys will be distributed to towns throughout the island at local celebrations. Three Kings Day is one of the most important holidays for Puerto Ricans and Latin Americans across the world. Families celebrate through generous gift-giving to honor the gifts given by the Three Wise Men to Jesus Christ.

As the official media partner, under the banner of its corporate social responsibility initiative, “El Poder En Ti” (The Power in You), Telemundo will make a donation of $30,000 to the toy drive. The network will also air national and local promos encouraging viewers to donate, in-show segments across network shows including “Un Nuevo Día,” “Al Rojo Vivo” and “Noticias Telemundo,” daily digital and social amplification, and participation in numerous community events to support the drive. All gifted toys will benefit children in Puerto Rico who were affected by the devastating storm.

Rivera, free agent catcher who most recently played for the Chicago Cubs, has already pledged his commitment to his native Puerto Rico as the island continues to pick up the pieces post Hurricane Maria. He and his wife, Mariel, will distribute collected toys to children across Puerto RicoDecember 18-20. This follows Rivera’s launch of a GoFundMe page, which raised more than $39,000 for recovery efforts. In addition, Shop Your Way has already gifted 25,000 pieces of Cubs apparel in partnership with Rivera as well as his teammates Javier Baez and Victor Caratini to the island’s residents. Before Rivera arrives in Puerto Rico, the catcher will host an event on December 9 at the Kmart store on 8th Street in Miami to welcome those who have relocated from Puerto Rico to Miami—either temporarily or permanently—and help them get on their feet. A second event on December 16 in Rivera’s hometown of Bayamon, Puerto Rico, will serve as an opportunity to continue to distribute collected apparel and promote the toy drive, in addition to connecting with the community during this time of year.

“To see my hometown in ruins has been heartbreaking, but that feeling pales in comparison to knowing so many families are unable to celebrate the holidays because of their situation,” said Rivera. “Our goal for this toy drive is to bring these families joy, comfort and a break from their distress this holiday season.”

The toy drive is another way Shop Your Way has assisted affected members recovering in Puerto Rico. Shop Your Way has distributed hundreds of care packages containing food and essential supplies to community centers and children’s homes, as well as established ‘comfort zones’ at all open Sears and Kmart stores to give families a place to sit and rest, charge their phones and other devices, cool down in air conditioning and allow children to play. Australian Retailers Association believes toy retailers will be as busy as elves this Christmas

Melbourne, Australia, 2017-Nov-27 — /EPR Retail News/ — With the Australian Retailers Association (ARA) and Roy Morgan Research predicting Australians to spend more than $50 billion over the Christmas trading period from November 15 to December 24, 2017, the ARA believe toy retailers will be as busy as elves this Christmas.

With the ARA and Roy Morgan Research tipping Australian consumers to spend 2.8% more on Christmas compared to last year, ARA Executive Director, Russell Zimmerman said it’s a busy time for toy retailers across the country.

“Keeping up with hottest-selling toys for kids at Christmas is like keeping up with digital technology in the retail landscape… both retailers and consumers need to be prepared,” Mr Zimmerman said.

“With many new toys hitting the shelves this year, parents need to start their shopping early to ensure they can get the toy at the top of their children’s wish list.”

“Likewise retailers need to be prepared for the onslaught of parents trying to secure the perfect gift for their children.”

With the ARA and Roy Morgan Research predicting Aussies to increase their spending in the ‘Other retailing’ category by 3.96%, the ARA have worked with Toys“R”Us to identify the Top 20 Toys for kids this Christmas.

“It appears Hatchimals continue to outperform retailer’s expectations as they completely sold out last year, so we urge retailers to be prepared for a similar toy rush this pre-Christmas period,” Mr Zimmerman said.

New to the toy scene, LEGO Boost Creative Toolbox is one of the most sought-after interactive toys in the tech space this year. This innovative creation targeted for boys aged 7+, enhances the building and learning experience for boys by not only building the robot but also coding its behaviour.

“Gone are the days when we used to fly model planes, it seems LEGO Boost is now a must have for tech savvy youngsters this Christmas,” Mr Zimmerman said.

Bartell Drugs to host its 15th annual Salvation Army “Toy ‘N’ Joy” drive

SEATTLE, 2017-Nov-08 — /EPR Retail News/ — Bartell Drugs is once again partnering with the Salvation Army to provide holiday gifts for children in need by collecting new, unwrapped toys during its 15th annual Salvation Army “Toy ‘N’ Joy” drive.

The toy drive will run November 12 through December 9 at 65 of Bartell’s locations in King, Pierce and Snohomish counties.

As part of the promotion, we are partnering with MOVin and WARM radio stations and hosting two special radio remotes to encourage donations. These remotes will be:

  • Wednesday, November 15 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Retailer’s home delivery service expands to include toys, wrapping paper, Christmas decorations and thousands of other items

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., 2017-Nov-07 — /EPR Retail News/ — Meijer is gearing up for the holidays by adding thousands of general merchandise items to its popular store-to-door home delivery service, challenging online retailers as competition for customer wallets continues to increase for Thanksgiving, Christmas and seasonal celebrations.

The general merchandise items now available through Meijer Home Delivery includes the season’s hottest gifts and toys, as well as wrapping paper, artificial trees and Christmas decorations. Other items added to a total of more than 70,000 fresh produce, grocery and general merchandise items hand-picked by Shipt shoppers from local Meijer stores include electronics like TVs, tablets, headphones, drones and gaming systems.

Keyes said one reason the program has been so successful is the company’s ability to offer product selection from its supercenters. The National Retail Federation expects retail sales in November and December – excluding automobiles, gasoline and restaurants – to increase as much as 4 percent this year, for a total of $678.75 billion to $682 billion, up from $655.8 billion last year.

Because most Meijer stores are open 24-hours-a-day, customers can choose delivery times most convenient for them, which gives people the flexibility to shop and receive orders very early in the morning or late at night.

Meijer has also provided home delivery service members the ability to earn mPerks Rewards that can be redeemed in store, as well as offering sales on hundreds of items each week found through the Shipt app.

Meijer customers can sign up for the service for $99 per year. Unlimited deliveries are free for orders over $35; a flat $7 delivery fee is added to any orders under $35.

Action-ready Argos elves pull out all the stops to help Santa deliver gifts in record time

LONDON, UK, 2017-Nov-06 — /EPR Retail News/ — UK retailer Argos launches its 2017 Christmas advertising campaign, breaking tonight with high profile spots during ITV’s Emmerdale and Channel 4’s Gogglebox.

The 60 second TV commercial will transport millions of viewers to a magical Argos distribution centre where a troupe of Argos elves are helping Santa to deliver hundreds of thousands of gifts across the country at record speed on bright red super-sleighs.

The advert celebrates Argos’s commitment to super speedy delivery, with online orders delivered in as little as four hours¹ through its market-leading nationwide Fast Track same-day delivery service.

In a Christmas advertising first, three children will also have the exciting opportunity to feature in the TV advert themselves. From Tuesday 7 November, parents can visit Argos’s Facebook and Twitter channels to submit an image of their child using the hashtag #ReadyForTakeOff.  Three winners will be selected and will appear on national TV in the Argos advert for a whole day each on Friday 10, Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 November.

What’s more, everyone will get a chance to see their child’s face in a personalised social media version of the advert which they can share with loved ones.  Again, they simply need to upload their child’s photo on the Argos Facebook or Twitter sites and include the hashtag #ReadyForTakeOff.

The advert, created by CHI&Partners and directed by Gary Freedman, features a futuristic rocket-powered super-sleigh ready to take off on its mission across the country. The action shifts gear as one child’s long-awaited Christmas present, a Teksta voice-recognition robotic puppy, is found wandering the aisles by an elf.  The quick-thinking elf scans it in at the elf station to reveal its intended recipient on-screen, Tom, aged nine, whose family’s gifts are departing from gate nine.

This leads to a blockbuster-style chase across the distribution centre in which the elf pulls out all the stops to ensure the robotic puppy makes it to Tom in time for Christmas.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., 2017-Nov-06 — /EPR Retail News/ — For the fourth consecutive year, Meijer is donating a portion of customer purchases made in the toy department, up to $400,000, to children’s gift-giving programs throughout the Midwest.

Any toy purchased at Meijer starting Oct. 29 throughout November will help the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based retailer share the joy this holiday season.

“Meijer wants to help make the holidays happier for hundreds of children, because every child deserves to experience the joy of unwrapping a toy,” said Dan Myers, Divisional Merchandise Manager of Toys for Meijer. “We know how much value our customers place on sharing their good fortune, and we believe the Buy a Toy, Share the Joy program will create lasting memories for children in need.”

Purchases made on hundreds of toys – including favorite national brands like Fisher-Price, Barbie, Lego and Nerf, and this season’s top toys – will count toward increasing the donation, up to $400,000, to children’s gift-giving programs within the retailer’s six-state footprint of Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Wisconsin. Meijer will select the programs to ensure that the donations remain in the communities Meijer serves.

Playtime Is On as The Company’s Free-to-Play AR App Rolls Out to Stores Nationwide 

WAYNE, NJ, 2017-Oct-30 — /EPR Retail News/ — From championing unstructured play for kids of all ages, to making its stores more than just a place to shop with Play Labs, Toys“R”Us® is continuing its mission to set play free with the introduction of Play Chaser, its new, free-to-play, augmented reality (AR) app. Following a 23 store test that saw thousands of kids racing monster trucks, peeking into a world of safari animals, playing virtual basketball and more at their local stores earlier this month, Play Chaser has now rolled out to all Toys“R”Us locations nationwide.

Toys“R”Us enlisted some of the brightest tech brains in the toy industry to develop the app: PlayFusion, the creators of Lightseekers (an action adventure role playing game that fuses together AR, physical trading cards, digital action figures). With the help of PlayFusion’s proprietary computer vision technology, the app activates different AR games and play experiences on the screen of a customer’s smartphone or tablet. With the app open, players use their devices to unlock experiences by scanning designated Play Chaser signage featured throughout Toys“R”Us.

The donation provides thousands of high school students with a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience the hit musical HAMILTON through an innovative education program that focuses on history and the performing arts.

Over the course of several weeks, nearly 25,000 Title 1 high school students in Los Angeles, Chicago and New York, will learn the past is far from boring. During the program, kids will see history through a new lens by studying Alexander Hamilton and nation’s Founding Fathers, and by creating their own performance, such as an original song, spoken word or rap piece. Toys“R”Us worked closely with the EduHam team – co-founded by Lin-Manuel Miranda and the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History – to ensure its donation would give each student a show-stopping final curtain call in their HAMILTON journey: the opportunity to experience the musical first-hand, in their hometown.

Cuddly Company Kicks Off Countdown to 20th Birthday on October 27 with 20,000-bear Donation and Announcement of a New Charitable Giving Focus

LOUIS, 2017-Oct-11 — /EPR Retail News/ — In honor of the company’s 20th Birthday, Build-A-Bear today (Oct. 10, 2017) announced a donation of 20,000 teddy bears that will be distributed among two dozen children’s hospitals across the United States. Volunteer coordination for the nationwide donation is powered by United Way, and UPS is serving as the official logistics and shipping partner. The initiative will culminate with a special delivery to patients at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital in New York City by Build-A-Bear Workshop President and Chief Executive Officer Sharon Price John on Thursday, October 26, the day before the company’s 20th Birthday.

The donation was funded by Build-A-Bear Foundation to commemorate the past 20 years of giving and to introduce a new charitable focus as it looks toward the future.

“Since 1997, Build-A-Bear has donated nearly $50 million in funds and furry friends to a variety of organizations,” said Sharon John, president and CEO, Build-A-Bear Workshop. “We have always believed in the power of hugs and the simple comfort of having a furry friend by your side. Starting in November, Build-A-Bear Foundation will turn its focus to giving efforts that support the well-being of children through opportunities to make their days a little bit brighter. The delivery of tens of thousands of teddy bears to deserving patients at some of our country’s best hospitals would not have been possible without the generous support of our partners at United Way and UPS.”

Nearly 100 volunteers are helping to make the bear deliveries happen thanks to tireless coordination and support from United Way and HandsOn Network organizations located near the hospitals.

The finished bears were packaged with care by Build-A-Bear associates at the company’s Bearhouse in Groveport, Ohio. Dedicated teams of UPS drivers will make sure the furry friends journey safely and quickly to every corner of the country.
