As watches became more common, enthusiasts were no longer content with just any run-of-the-mill watch. They wanted something unique, and thus, the luxury watch industry came to be.

The reasoning behind it was simple: use the best available materials and craftsmanship to create distinctive and pricier timepieces. For that, they needed rarer materials which, thanks to the soaring international trading of the 20th century, they could get easily.

This was the start of globalization and, in a way, the birth of the industry that is the affordable watches from China.

The opening of the Chinese economy was a success because of something called the cost of labor. See, ‘Swiss watches’ have long been the gold standard in quality for the watchmaking industry. But what makes a watch Swiss? More specifically, how much of it need to actually come from Switzerland?

According to an ordinance by Switzerland’s Federal Council dated 29 December, 1971 they needed to be 60% Swiss. To expound: for industrial goods, 60% of the manufacturing costs and important manufacturing steps must happen inside Switzerland. The fact of the matter is that the demands of the 60% ordinance no longer required all parts to be Swiss produced. That, realistically speaking, would be impossible for most brands and cost-prohibitive for even the biggest brands. Thus, it gives leeway to manufacturers to source some key parts from elsewhere.

One of the favorite parts of the world for Swiss manufacturers to source from just so happens to be, you guessed it, China. Since the 1970s, the Swiss watchmaking industry’s biggest open secret has been its sourcing of parts from Asia.

Cases, crowns, hands, dials, and even watchbands and covering glass. Swiss watchmakers can legally get those parts from China and elsewhere in Asia. Given that they still take care of providing the watch movements and assembling in-house, they can still pretty much call the final product ‘Swiss-made.’

Although a few lawmakers and even fewer watchmakers call into question the alleged loopholes of the law, the industry is not stopping. Watchmakers from the top brands still source key parts of their product from the outside.

Competitive Swiss watchmaking brands take it one step further. In order to remain competitive as a budget brand, they seek to source and outsource to and from China as much as possible.

From getting most finished part from there and/or getting components of important parts to Switzerland to later assemble there. This kind of complex manufacturing schedule it’s what allows Swiss budget brands to remain in business without dropping the ‘Swiss-made’ label.

Finally, at times of high demand, some big brands pretty much outsource most of the manufacturing work to Chinese factories. Those Chinese factories have been getting better and better at it due to the vast amount of work said Swiss brands heap upon them.

What The Future Holds for The Swiss and Chinese Watchmaking Industries
An interesting situation unfolded in 2020. Due to the restrictive measures required in Switzerland due to the COVID-19 pandemic, lots of Swiss manufacturers stopped or deescalated operations. But that was not the case in China.

Several factories remained open by adopting protective sanitary measures, and the Swiss brands took notice of it in two ways. First, they either outsourced, increased manufacturing to China, and/or shifted to opening more stores in mainland China.

The second represents an interesting choice. See, Chinese consumers love to do purchase tourism. They go abroad and buy non-essential things like watches. However, most of the global tourism saw a downturn during 2020. Chinese buyers, a significant source of revenue for said brands, were not able to buy from them. Industry analysts from Millennium India, a leading e-commerce advisory and supplier of advanced POS technology to Indian retailers, say that the E-commerce growth in India has been contributed by the arrival of leading names – Flipkart, Amazon, Paytm Mall, Zomato, Bigbasket, Naaptol, Urban Ladder, etc, which have forayed into newer fields to address the daily needs of customers.

For example, Flipkart, Amazon and Jio are in the process of integrating nearby grocery shops to provide customers the pleasure of shopping daily need items, fruits and veggie from home, says Kiran Bhargava, an industry analyst based in Mumbai.

According to Bhaskar Venkatraman, CEO and Director of JusTransact.com, which is India’s only e-commerce portal for Point of Sale (POS) electronic products, says: “E-commerce in India has seen vertical growth over a decade and is now in the consolidating mode spreading its base to several other fields to satisfy growing customer demands. Customers, who are empowered by mobile technology, want everything online.  Today’s shoppers are highly demanding and tech-savvy which forces retailers to  open all doors – physical, internet, mobile, land-line, desktop/smart mobile/tablets, O2O, cloud- to reach them and vice-versa. “E-commerce is getting further boost due to cheaper smartphones and increased internet users, and this trend is catching up fast in tier II and III cities as well,” adds Bhaskar, who also heads Millennium India.

Not only, groceries, customers can now order their daily needs and essential items such as furniture, electrical and electronic items, hardware, home utility items, laundry services, food from their smart phones, whose penetration and internet connectivity and also overwhelming online presence by young population and expanding middle class are catapulting the number of digital buyers in India.

Amazon to create more than 1,500 full-time jobs with its first Missouri fulfillment center

SEATTLE, 2018-Mar-09 — /EPR Retail News/ — Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) today (Mar. 7, 2018) announced plans for the first Missouri fulfillment center to be located in St. Peters, creating more than 1,500 full-time jobs with benefits and opportunities to engage with Amazon Robotics in a highly technological workplace. Amazon currently operates a sortation center in Hazelwood, where it employs hundreds of associates.

“We’re excited to continue growing our team with our first, state-of-the-art fulfillment center in Missouri,” said Sanjay Shah, Amazon’s Vice President of North America Customer Fulfillment. “Our ability to expand in Missouri is the result of two things: incredible customers and an outstanding workforce. Amazon is committed to providing great opportunities for employment and creating a positive economic impact for the region.”

Amazon employees at the more than 800,000 square foot fulfillment center will pick, pack and ship small items to customers such as books, electronics and toys. The facility will feature innovative technology such as Amazon Robotics that will assist employees in fulfilling customer orders.

“Amazon’s choice to locate in Missouri speaks to our strength as North America’s logistics center,” Rob Dixon, Director of Missouri’s Department of Economic Development said. “Our central location, international airports and extensive highway, rail and river networks position Missouri as an ideal location for this new facility.”

Lonergan and Amazon Studios worked together last year on the critically acclaimed Manchester by the Sea, which won Lonergan an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and a nomination for Best Director. Manchester by the Sea is available now for streaming and download on Prime Video.

Amazon surpasses the milestone of 10,000 full-time employees in Illinois

Between 2014 and 2016, Amazon’s investments contributed more than $200 million into Illinois’ economy, indirectly creating 7,000 additional jobs on top of the 10,000 the company employs directly

SEATTLE, 2018-Mar-07 — /EPR Retail News/ — This year, Amazon will celebrate its third year fulfilling customer orders out of Illinois and surpassing the milestone of 10,000 full-time employees in the state with job opportunities for people with all types of experience, education and skill levels—from human resources, engineers and facilities technicians, to those seeking entry-level positions and on-the-job training.

Amazon’s first fulfillment center in Illinois, located at 205 Emerald Drive in Joliet, opened in 2015 with a team of 1,000 full-time employees. Since the initial building’s launch, Amazon has opened eight other fulfillment centers, two Prime Now hubs, an Amazon Fresh site, a sortation center, four delivery stations, an Amazon Books store, and a corporate office in the Prairie State.

This expansion has resulted in Amazon investing hundreds of millions of dollars into Illinois’s economy, both in fulfillment infrastructure and compensation to its 10,000 current employees. As a snapshot, according to a report by the company’s Economics team, Amazon’s investments in Illinois from 2014 through 2016 resulted in an additional $200 million to the state’s economy. Using Input-Output methodology and multipliers developed by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, Amazon estimates its investments in the state have created an additional 7,000 indirect jobs on top of the company’s direct hires.

Walmart Canada to utilize Food-X warehouse and delivery platform for online grocery shopping deliveries for Vancouver-area in summer 2018

Food-X, a subsidiary of Sustainable Produce Urban Delivery (SPUD), helps reduce waste and lower carbon footprint of growing home grocery delivery market

VANCOUVER, 2018-Mar-01 — /EPR Retail News/ — Walmart Canada and Sustainable Produce Urban Delivery (SPUD) announced today (February 21, 2018) an agreement to offer SPUD’s food delivery platform, Food-X Urban Delivery Inc. (Food-X), to Walmart.ca customers in Metro Vancouver. Food-X helps Walmart fulfill last mile home delivery and — through shared warehousing and consolidation of orders — reduces waste, truck trips and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Walmart Canada will begin using the Food-X warehouse and delivery platform for online grocery shopping deliveries for Vancouver-area Walmart.ca customers in summer 2018.

“Consumer demand for online grocery shopping is growing and that means more trucks on the road.” said Peter van Stolk, CEO at SPUD. “We have built a best-in-class platform to get food from the supplier to the kitchen while reducing waste, lowering emissions and lowering cost. Now we’re offering Food-X to other companies who share a commitment to sustainability, efficiency and strong customer service.”

Food-X comprises of a soon-to-be completed 74,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art warehouse with proprietary technology SPUD has been refining for the past 20 years, providing SPUD customers in the Vancouver-area with local, healthy food and produce. The facility will also have several bio-digesters used to compost meat, produce, and compostable packaging. Food-X is part of the larger SPUD ecosystem that includes home delivery, small store retail, commissary/food preparation services and distribution. SPUD will continue to operate its facility on East Hastings and SPUD customers will continue to benefit from a world class online grocery service.
This agreement also expands on Walmart Canada’s commitment to make grocery shopping easier for customers in urban centres like Vancouver – where there may not be convenient access to a Walmart Supercentre – and for customers who prefer to shop online.

Alibaba to acquire 33% equity interest in Ant Financial

Hangzhou, China, 2018-Feb-02 — /EPR Retail News/ — Alibaba Group Holding Limited (NYSE: BABA, “Alibaba”) and Ant Small and Micro Financial Services Group Co., Ltd. (“Ant Financial”) today (February 1, 2018) announced that pursuant to 2014 transaction agreements, Alibaba will acquire a 33% equity interest in Ant Financial. The parties have agreed to certain amendments to their 2014 transaction agreements to facilitate the transaction.

Under the terms of the amended agreements, Alibaba will acquire newly-issued equity from Ant Financial in exchange for certain intellectual property rights owned by Alibaba exclusively related to Ant Financial. There will be no cash impact to Alibaba following completion of the transaction. Upon closing, the companies will terminate the current profit-sharing arrangement under which Ant Financial pays royalty and technology service fees in an amount equal to 37.5% of its pre-tax profits to Alibaba.

Overstock.com launches a digitally-driven investment platform (robo-advising)

Unbiased artificial intelligence drives financial advising

SALT LAKE CITY, 2018-Feb-01 — /EPR Retail News/ — Overstock.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:OSTK) announces the launch of a digitally-driven investment platform (otherwise known as robo-advising), presented by tZERO Advisors. The service is accessible to investors through the online retailer’s FinanceHub™.

For a monthly fee of $9.95, investors can either select from a group of pre-established Adaptive Dynamic Portfolios matched to their investment profiles, or create a customized blend of these portfolios.
