Businesses in the UK which offer locally-produced goods for sale should shout about the fact, according a leading point of sale product manufacturer.

Now that a double-dip recession has become a reality, consumers want to support British businesses more than ever, says Stockport-based UK Point of Sale. The firm, which has more than 25 years’ experience of helping companies successfully market their goods and services using quality point of sale solutions such as window displays and pavements signs, believes they should be doing everything possible in the current climate to drive business.

Research commissioned by UKPOS found that more than half (55 per cent) of consumers in the UK and the Republic of Ireland would be more likely to go into a shop which displayed a sign saying it sold goods ‘Made in Britain’ in the window. As a result, it has recommended that companies take note of the patriotic mood of consumers and make sure that they are sufficiently promoting the fact that they stock British products.

The survey of more than 2,200 people also found that older consumers tend to be more patriotic than younger shoppers. More than two-thirds of respondents aged 65 and over said they would be more inclined to enter a shop after seeing a ‘Made in Britain’ sign in the window, compared to just under half of 18 to 24 year-olds. Pro-British sentiment was high in Birmingham, Manchester, Norwich and Liverpool, where 60 per cent of respondents said they would support shops backing British businesses.

Debra Jamieson, Sales and Marketing Director at UKPOS, said: “One of our aims in supporting the Made in Britain campaign is to offer expert advice to retailers who want to support companies that manufacture in Britain. These findings clearly indicate that ‘Made in Britain’ isn’t just a catchy slogan, but a genuine consumer influencer.

“We realise that, in the current climate, retailers are having to be more creative in the tactics they use to drive footfall into their stores and this research has shown that supporting Made in Britain has the potential to boost sales by enticing people into shops.”All retailers know that the shop window is their main way of promoting what they sell, but these findings should get the creative juices flowing and encourage retailers to try something new with their window space.”

World Book Night is an annual event that works to celebrate the joy of reading and encourage those that normally shy away from this fantastic hobby to get back into it. It’s Carry on Camping for Cash-strapped Brits

Canvas is increasingly the holiday shelter of choice for many Britons with tent sales and site bookings up before the season has even begun.

Bookings for the Easter bank holiday, next weekend, are 28% up on 2010 and 5% up on last year, reports the Camping and Caravanning Club.

Cycling and leisure retailer Halfords have seen sales of camping equipment soar by almost 50% in the run up to Easter, as the surge in popularity of outdoor holidays in the UK over the last three years shows no sign of slowing.

Halfords Camping Expert Paul Fensome said: “It’s clear camping is becoming more popular and the activity is now a regular part of many people’s holiday plans.

“Some customers are discovering the delights of camping for the first time while many more regular campers upgrade their equipment each year as improved products become available and campers are becoming more attached to their gadgets.

“Camping is for everyone, from those who want basic equipment to those who want modern tents which provide many of the comforts of home.”

Industry experts say the staycation trend and the popularity of nights under canvas have been boosted, not only by continuing economic uncertainty in Europe and austerity measures at home, but also by key events including the Queens Diamond Jubilee, the 2012 Cultural Festival which runs from 21 June 2012 – Midsummer’s Day – until 9 September 2012 – the last day of the London 2012 Paralympic Games and of course the Olympic Games itself.

Travel websites are already advising tourists coming for the Games that they may have already left it too late to book hotels and should check out temporary campsites set up close to the Olympic Park. Windsor Great Park will also provide 1000 pitches for those attending events at Eton Dorney.

Some sites will offer basic camping pitches for as little as £10, rising to £200 per couple for luxury glamping accommodation.

Camping and Caravanning Club Director General, Robert Louden, said: “With so much going on in 2012, this is the perfect time to make the most of the UK and take a holiday – our booking numbers are extremely positive at this stage.”

The latest Tourism Survey reveals that from January to the end of November 2011 there were 16.8 million camping and caravanning trips in Britain contributing around £2.6 billion to the economy. Not only was the total number of trips up almost 5% on the previous year, but the amount spent on those holidays leapt by nearly 13% year on year.

The Book People’s Seni Glaister And Sara Cooper Take On Their Toughest Challenge Yet

Spring may have sprung here in the UK but for two intrepid adventurers life is about to get a whole lot colder. CEO of the Book People Seni Glaister, along with friend and colleague Sara Cooper, is setting off this week on an epic ‘stroll’ to the North Pole, in aid of children’s hospice charity Shooting Star CHASE.

This will be Seni and Sara’s third challenge, after they climbed Kilimanjaro in 2010 and scaled the three highest mountains in North Africa in 2011. They will be putting their own tents up in temperatures as low as -50 degrees, navigating around open water, dragging their kit over pressure ridges in the ice – and keeping a watchful eye out for polar bears.

The Stroll to the Pole is a challenge for a very good cause. Seni and Sara are walking to celebrate the life of publisher Peter Bowron, who died suddenly in 2009, and to raise money for Shooting Star CHASE. So far, the pair’s efforts, together with the Book People’s annual Catteshall Stroll, have raised over £110,000 to help their local hospice, Christopher’s, keep on providing respite care for life-limited children and a lifeline for their families.
