ALDI receives the 2016 – 2017 “Best of the Best” award from the Environmental Protection Agency

“Best of the Best” Recognition from EPA’s GreenChill Partnership Honors Commitment to Sustainable Refrigeration in 34 Stores

Batavia, Ill, 2017-Dec-12 — /EPR Retail News/ — ALDI has received the 2016 – 2017 “Best of the Best” award from the Environmental Protection Agency’s GreenChill Partnership for its use of cutting-edge, environmentally sustainable refrigeration systems in 34 of its stores.

As part of its capital investment of $5 billion in new and remodeled stores over the next five years, ALDI is increasing its environmentally-friendly features in stores. New and remodeled stores feature environmentally-friendly building materials and energy-saving LED lighting. ALDI is committed to
continuing to reduce its refrigerant emissions and received its first GreenChill certification in 2015.

“ALDI is taking steps to reduce its environmental impact not only because our customers expect it, but because it is the right thing to do as a business. Partnerships like the one we share with GreenChill are critically important, as they enable us to work toward our goal of sustainable business operations,” said Aaron Sumida, Vice President, ALDI. “In switching to more environmentally friendly coolants, we strive to minimize the environmental impact of our refrigeration systems. This recognition from the GreenChill Partnership is a testament to our commitment.”

While the recognition typically goes to just one store, this year’s award from GreenChill acknowledges a record 34 platinum-certified ALDI stores. Platinum certification is the highest level awarded by GreenChill, and it requires each store to meet very stringent criteria.

“ALDI deserves recognition for embracing GreenChill’s environmental protection goals through its platinum-level certification of so many stores,” said Tom Land, manager of EPA’s GreenChill program. “ALDI is showing industry leadership through active participation in the GreenChill partnership and
through certification of innovative refrigeration systems.”

ALDI cares about its customers, employees, communities and its role as a business, working every day to help create a better world. In fact, the partnership with GreenChill is just one way that ALDI is working to reduce its impact on the environment. Last year, ALDI increased the number of stores with rooftop solar panels by more than 45 percent and will continue to grow its solar portfolio and use of green electricity. Additionally, ALDI has recycled nearly 100 percent of the cardboard, paper, plastic film and foil that it uses in its warehouses since 2012. Moreover, its new warehouses are constructed with sun shades and special glass to insulate and reduce heat from the sun.

GreenChill works with food retailers to reduce refrigerant emissions and decrease their impact on the ozone layer and climate change. The “Best of the Best” achievement recognizes GreenChill-certified stores demonstrating innovation in advanced refrigeration technology.

ALDI and Venmo launch new campaign to raise one million meals for families in need in honor of Friendsgiving

First-of-Its-Kind Emoji Will Help Provide One Million Meals to Families in Need Through Feeding America®

Batavia, Ill., 2017-Nov-08 — /EPR Retail News/ — ALDI and Venmo, a popular mobile app that makes it easy for friends to exchange money, announced a new campaign that lets Americans help give one million meals to families in need in honor of Friendsgiving.

By using a custom-designed Friendsgiving emoji on Venmo this November, people can instantly add a new tradition of giving to their holiday celebrations. With the help of Venmo, every time friends share the Turkey Hand Friendsgiving emoji in a Venmo payment note, ALDI will donate 10 meals to Feeding
America®, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization.

“It feels good to give back, especially during the holidays,” said ALDI spokesperson Liz Ruggles. “Teaming up with Venmo makes it easy. By simply using the Turkey Hand emoji, people can help ALDI give meals while planning Friendsgiving meals of their own.”

The program marks the first time Venmo has created a custom emoji with a partner. The Turkey Hand, inspired by the popular childhood craft project, symbolizes the spirit of giving.

“Delicious food is key to Friendsgiving, but the centerpiece is the people,” said Venmo spokesperson Josh Criscoe. “By creating the first-ever Friendsgiving emoji and teaming up with ALDI, Venmo is happy to help feed hungry families in America while celebrating the season with friends and family.”

When Venmo users include the Turkey Hand emoji in transactions by selecting the icon from the emoji picker or typing ‘Friendsgiving’ to autocomplete, ALDI will donate up to 1 million meals to Feeding America on behalf of local member food banks. ALDI is a Leadership Partner of Feeding America and has supported its mission to help Americans facing hunger for several years, through contributions, employee volunteerism and food donations.

“As friends and family gather around the dinner table this November, they can also help provide nutritious food to people in need,” said Andy Wilson, Chief Development Officer at Feeding America. “We’re proud to work with ALDI and Venmo to raise awareness and engagement in hunger relief.”

Timothy Goodman to bring his signature hand-illustrated style to the labels of award-winning ALDI wines

Batavia, Ill., 2017-Nov-02 — /EPR Retail News/ — ALDI has partnered with acclaimed artist, designer and illustrator Timothy Goodman for the upcoming release of a limited edition reserve wine collection. Known for his bold, text-based murals, Goodman traded walls for wine labels to bring his signature hand-illustrated style to a selection of award-winning ALDI wines. The reserve collection, which includes three varietals under the William Wright label, will be sold exclusively at ALDI stores and hit shelves just in time for the holidays.

Goodman’s label art lifts inspiration from the origin stories and flavor notes of each wine to bring striking color and playful iconography to the bottles. “As a visual person, shopping for wine begins with the label,” he says. “I gravitate toward bottles with interesting designs, so I was excited to create a series of labels that would really pop on shelf. Each bottle has a unique design, so you can collect all three to display on your bar or give as gifts over the holidays.”

Its impressive portfolio of award-winning wines makes ALDI a destination for wine enthusiasts looking for diversity of region and varietal at a great value. This limited edition reserve collection consists of a Chardonnay, a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Red Wine Blend and comes highly recommended by experts at the Beverage Testing Institute. The collection will be available exclusively at ALDI stores nationwide on December 13 and will retail at $9.99 per bottle.

“The holidays are the perfect time for sharing or gifting a bottle of wine and we knew Timothy’s designs could elevate that tradition by pairing modern art with award-winning taste,” said ALDI spokeswoman Liz Ruggles.

ALDI commits to more than $4 Million in kids’ health and wellness programs

Grocer to Invest More Than $4 Million in Kids’ Health and Wellness Programs in Next Two Years

Batavia, Ill., 2017-Apr-27 — /EPR Retail News/ — This week, ALDI, one of America’s favorite grocers*, joins thousands across the country celebrating Every Kid Healthy Week by supporting kids and families who live active, healthy lives. By funding national organizations that share the passion for supporting communities, the company continues its focus on advocating for healthy living in school and at home. This year, ALDI nearly doubled its commitment to kids’ health and wellness programs, totaling more than $2 million in partnerships, grants and education resources.

“Access to nutritious food and physical fitness should be available to kids everywhere, and we’re thrilled to make this a reality in the communities where we live and play,” said ALDI Spokeswoman Liz Ruggles. “Together with all of our partners, we’re helping to ensure that kids and families have the resources, programming and better-for-you food options that can lead to healthier lives.”

For ALDI, being a smarter grocer means more than just providing high-quality products at low prices; it means helping to build strong communities and contributing to a better world. This year, the company is investing in partnerships that reach kids at all stages of their day, including:

  • Supporting Healthy School Programming: ALDI builds on a long-standing partnership with Action for Healthy Kids, funding $650,000 in Parents for Healthy Kids grants, which provides resources and technical support to 25 schools this school year and 150 schools in the 2017-2018 school year, expanding student access to in-school physical activity and nutrition programs.
  • Helping Every Kid Be Healthy: As part of its partnership with Action for Healthy Kids, ALDI is a national sponsor of Every Kid Healthy Week, held April 24-28 this year, which celebrates school health and wellness accomplishments and helps students make the link between nutrition, physical activity and learning.
  • Empowering Parents at Home and School: ALDI has teamed up with Action for Healthy Kids and National PTA to support the development of a new online community, Parents for Healthy Kids, which will offer parents resources to positively impact school health and make healthy living easy at home. This new website is set to launch later this summer. ALDI is also a Proud National Sponsor of National PTA, helping to power the association’s programs and initiatives to make a difference for the health and well-being of every child through family and community involvement.
  • Supporting Kids During Critical After-School Hours: Working with the Boys & Girls Clubs in Southern California, ALDI has given $100,000 to 36 local Clubs, promoting healthy lifestyles for Club members who attend after-school and summer programs.

But it doesn’t stop there. ALDI is also launching its own online grant application program, ALDI Smart Kids. It will give local organizations the opportunity to request grants or gift cards that support youth programs focusing on education, physical activity, nutrition, social skills and the arts.

As part of its overall commitment to well-being, ALDI continues to focus on offering more product options that customers can feel good about. This includes an expanded selection of fresh and organic produce, rolling out Healthier Checklanes that offer smarter options at checkout, and continuing to grow its product lines to offer better-for-you options for families to enjoy, including more gluten-free options and a range of products free of additives, antibiotics and added hormones.

In the coming years, ALDI plans to continue to grow its commitment to kids and families as part of its Corporate Responsibility programming. For more information about how ALDI supports local communities, visit https://corporate.aldi.us/en/corporate-responsibility/community/.

ALDI announces $1.6 billion investment plan to remodel and expand more than 1,300 US stores by 2020

One of America’s Favorite Grocers* Will Upgrade More Than 1,300 Stores by 2020

Batavia, Ill., 2017-Feb-09 — /EPR Retail News/ —With more people shopping its grocery stores than ever before, ALDI today (February 8, 2017) announced an aggressive $1.6 billion investment in its stores, with an extensive plan to remodel and expand more than 1,300 US stores by 2020.

The new ALDI store look delivers on its customers’ desire for a modern and convenient shopping experience with a focus on fresh items, including more robust produce, dairy and bakery sections. In the last few years, ALDI has added a number of new product lines that have quickly become customer favorites, including the liveGfree brand of gluten-free foods, SimplyNature products featuring many organic items and a full line of premium baby items under the Little Journey brand. Remodeled stores will also feature a modern design, open ceilings, natural lighting and environmentally friendly building materials – such as recycled materials, energy-saving refrigeration and LED lighting.

“With this significant investment in our stores, what we’re really doing is continuing to invest in ALDI customers,” said Jason Hart, CEO, ALDI. “We’re continuing to expand our fresh offerings, which means we need to provide more space for produce, meat, and bakery items. We’ve also made a number of improvements to our products – such as removing added MSG, certified synthetic colors and partially hydrogenated oils from all of our ALDI exclusive brand foods. But one thing that hasn’t changed is that our customers still save money on the groceries they buy the most.”

More shoppers than ever are making ALDI their grocery destination. Today, ALDI serves more than 40 million customers each month, which is a nearly 60 percent increase since 2013. Customer feedback shows they’re thrilled about the enhancements ALDI has made to its premium-quality products and the additions to its everyday lineup.

“ALDI customers know we stand out from our competitors for a reason: we offer high-quality, affordable food that they can feel good about serving their families,” added Hart. “Our unmatched combination of exceptional quality and everyday low prices is why we’re one of the fastest growing retailers in the US, currently operating in 35 states.”

ALDI offers customers the very best of their weekly must-haves, such as fresh produce, organic foods, fresh dairy and bakery items, gluten-free foods, USDA Choice beef and household products, while saving them up to 50 percent** on their grocery bill. Its simple approach to retailing means ALDI customers only pay for freshness and quality without the hidden costs that other grocery retailers are known for. This approach, coupled with the ALDI exclusive brands that comprise 90 percent of the products, allows customers to save money on premium-quality groceries.

Coast-to-Coast Expansion

ALDI is embarking on this significant remodel program while continuing to implement an accelerated growth plan to open 650 new stores across the US. By the end of 2018, ALDI expects to operate nearly 2,000 stores, bringing the ALDI difference to more than 45 million customers each month. As previously announced, ALDI will invest more than $3 billion to pay for land, facilities and equipment to open these new stores.

As part of its aggressive expansion, ALDI launched its first stores in Southern California, opening 34 stores since March 2016. Today, ALDI reaches customers in more than two-thirds of the country and its footprint continues to grow in both new and existing markets.

“On behalf of the more than 24,000 ALDI employees across the country, we look forward to bringing the ALDI difference to new markets, but we’re just as excited to share a new store experience with our longtime ALDI customers,” said Hart. “We’ve grown so consistently year over year because our loyal customers love to share with their friends and family that shopping at ALDI can save time and money without sacrificing quality. We’re thrilled to provide ALDI fans an even better, more welcoming store in which to shop.”

ALDI Kicks Off 2017 with Weekly Meal Plans and Better-for-You Foods

Batavia, Ill, 2017-Jan-11 — /EPR Retail News/ — For many, the start of the year means a re-focus and commitment to healthier lifestyle habits. According to a recent survey, more than 56 percent of New Year’s resolutions are based around healthier eating, weight loss or fitness1 . These healthy hopefuls can now turn to an affordable ally to help them reach their goals this year – ALDI.

In addition to significantly expanding their fresh produce and organic offerings, the retailer, one of America’s favorite grocery stores2 , is offering customers fresh online resources at ALDI.us/hellohealthy to help them say “hello, healthy” in the New Year. Starting in January 2017 and continuing through March, visitors can find new resources each week, including weekly meal plans, new recipes, inspiring videos, and tips on how to shop for a variety of eating styles like paleo, vegan and plant-based.

“It’s the time of year when everyone is thinking about making a fresh start and resolving to eat better, and I’m so excited that ALDI is offering these resources to help introduce better-for-you foods, whether it’s a new fruit or vegetable, or a smarter way of preparing a favorite recipe,” said Sally Kuzemchak, registered dietitian, author and ALDI Advisory Council member. “And, many people don’t realize that ALDI carries several dietitian-recommended products – at a fraction of the cost compared to other grocery retailers.”

Overcoming Barriers to Better Eating

Research shows people often give up on healthy living resolutions because they are overwhelmed by a number of factors, including the perceived higher cost of healthy foods. In fact, 41 percent of people surveyed note that lower prices on healthy food would best help them stick to their New Year’s resolutions to eat healthier1 . Now, customers can easily find all of the products to support their healthy living endeavors at ALDI, all while saving up to 50 percent3 on their grocery bills.

“At ALDI, we want our customers to know we are dedicated to making living healthier not only attainable, but affordable, too,” said ALDI spokeswoman Liz Ruggles. “In addition to providing high quality groceries at the lowest possible prices, we developed these new resources to help our shoppers achieve their goals in health and wellness.”

More than 50 percent of survey respondents say that lack of planning was a reason for not sticking to healthy eating resolutions in the past1 . To be able to offer up a variety of meal plans and shopping guides to fit every lifestyle, ALDI has teamed up with well-known food and lifestyle partners Cookie and Kate, A Couple Cooks, The Healthy Apple, and My Heart Beets to curate better-for-you recipes and meal plans to help ALDI customers stick to healthier eating habits.

In addition to these partners, ALDI is proud to work with a team of dietitians who specialize in family nutrition, sports performance and promoting a positive body image. This team, also known as the ALDI Advisory Council of Registered Dietitians, select their ‘Dietitian’s Picks’ to help more than 32 million monthly shoppers easily find smart choices and kick-start healthy eating habits at home. These products, hand-picked for their nutritional value, can be found by the ‘Dietitian’s Picks’ emblem online at ALDI.us and include gluten-free and organic items, fresh meat and produce options, kid-friendly choices as well as fresh bakery goods.

That’s not all ALDI has done with a focus on the well-being of its customers. Over the past several years, ALDI has improved its product offerings and resources to provide customers with even more options they can feel good about, including:

Store Developments: Introduced Healthier Checklanes which replaced high calorie and high sugar content candy and treats with smarter options like single-serve nuts and trail mixes, dried fruits and assorted granola bars.

Product Changes: Removed added MSG, certified synthetic colors, and partially hydrogenated oils from all exclusive brand food products – which make up 90 percent of the items in ALDI stores.

New Product Lines: Ever-growing SimplyNature line of products, which is free from more than 125 artificial ingredients, as well as a gluten-free line of products under the ALDI exclusive brand, liveGfree, and Never Any! meat products that contain no added antibiotics, hormones, animal by-products or other additives.

Fresh Produce: Expanded selection of fresh, organic produce offerings, including organic bananas, apples, tomatoes, avocados and salad mixes.

ALDI is ready to help Americans stick to those resolutions for good. For deliciously healthy recipes, eating tips, and to learn more about how ALDI is helping customers say “hello, healthy” this year, check out ALDI.us/hellohealthy.

ALDI to support schools in creating healthier environments through Action for Healthy Kids® and National PTA Game On program

CHICAGO, 2016-Nov-05 — /EPR Retail News/ — Action for Healthy Kids® (AFHK) and National PTA have teamed up to support schools in creating healthier environments and help children and families develop healthy lifestyles. To kick off the program, 25 schools will receive Game On Grants for the 2016-2017 school year. The grants, funded by ALDI, aim to expand student access to inschool physical activity and healthy foods, improve knowledge and behaviors around exercise and nutrition, and provide funding and support to PTAs and other parent groups in engaging parents and families in these efforts both at school and at home.

“Parents are a powerful force for change in schools and can help bring together school staff and community partners to create healthier learning environments for students,” said Rob Bisceglie, CEO, Action for Healthy Kids. “The complementary missions of AFHK and National PTA, combined with the ALDI commitment to helping all families live healthier lives, makes our collaboration and these grants powerful tools, starting with these 25 deserving schools.”

Through its Game On program, AFHK provides schools with technical support to activate their grants, assistance with developing their school health teams and assessing their school health environment, as well as other tools and resources. Twenty-five schools in five states— California, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri and Texas—will each receive up to a $1,000 grant that will be used for a variety of wellness purposes including: • Nutrition education, school gardens, taste tests, and healthy classroom parties and celebrations that introduce students to the value of a healthy lifestyle; and • Funding for physical education, active indoor and outdoor recess, classroom energizers, walking and running clubs, and before- and after-school programs.

“Ensuring children have access to physical activity and nutritious foods in schools is critical to their success and to set the stage for a healthy lifestyle into adulthood,” said Laura Bay, president of National PTA. “PTA leaders, members and families play an important role in helping schools deliver physical activity programs and implement improved meal offerings. We are pleased to team up with Action for Healthy Kids and ALDI to equip PTAs and schools with resources to engage families and provide a healthier environment for students.”

“In working with Action for Healthy Kids over the years, we know firsthand the great work schools can do when supported with the right resources and people power,” said ALDI spokeswoman Liz Ruggles. “This new collaboration with Action for Healthy Kids and National PTA truly demonstrates what it means to bring schools, parents and community partners together to make a difference in the lives of children and families. We’re honored to be able to support families in the communities where we operate.”

ALDI earns LEED Gold certification for its distribution center and regional headquarters in Moreno Valley, California

Batavia, Ill., 2016-Sep-29 — /EPR Retail News/ — ALDI, one of America’s favorite grocery stores *, has earned LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) for its environmentally sustainable distribution center and regional headquarters in Moreno Valley, California.

According to USGBC, LEED projects are responsible for diverting more than 80 million tons of waste from landfills. Compared to the average commercial building, LEED Gold buildings consume a quarter less energy and generate 34 percent lower greenhouse gas emissions.

“ALDI is taking steps wherever possible to reduce our environmental impact,” said ALDI Vice President Aaron Sumida. “Building our warehouse to meet LEED Gold requirements is a significant achievement, one that will enable us to conserve energy, reduce water consumption, which is critical in California, and ultimately reduce our carbon footprint.”

To meet LEED Gold standards, ALDI worked with Graycor Construction Company as the design-build partner along with architects and engineers to improve the design and materials used in the development of its distribution center and regional headquarters. The sustainable building features installed in the Moreno Valley facility include:

 Renewable energy from on-site solar panels that provide 60 percent of the electricity at the ALDI Moreno Valley regional headquarters and warehouse.
 Ammonia refrigeration system which is a naturally occurring element and highly energy efficient.
 Electric vehicle charging stations and bicycle racks that promote the use of greener methods of transportation.
 Water efficient landscaping and plumbing.

“Nearly 40 percent of the solution to the global climate change challenge can come from improved building operations. And while climate change is a global problem, innovative companies like ALDI are addressing it through local solutions,” said Rick Fedrizzi, CEO and founding chair of USGBC. “By implementing measures to ensure the facility is operating more efficiently, ALDI is helping us get one step closer to USGBC’s vision of a sustainably built environment within a generation and contributing to the uptake of green building practice worldwide.”

The accomplishment is representative of the collective efforts of ALDI and their design-build team comprised of Graycor Construction Company as the builder and multiple design partners which included HPA Architecture, Webber/Smith Associates, Inc., Gregg Electric, Inc., Air Control Systems, HSA Engineering, Inc., Huitt-Zollars, Ridge Landscape Architects and KDI.

“The ALDI Moreno Valley facility epitomizes what can be achieved when there is shared mutual respect, trust and cooperation between all project team members—owner, contractor, designers, subcontractors and regulatory agencies,” said Daren Sealover, Project Executive, Graycor Construction Company. “The facility is beautifully – and most importantly – sustainably built and I couldn’t be more proud to have partnered with ALDI on this project.”

Throughout the construction of its Moreno Valley warehouse, ALDI diverted more than 90 percent of its waste to be recycled, composted or repurposed.

“ALDI shoppers know that we save them time and money while offering their families premium quality groceries at affordable prices,” said Sumida. “With this LEED recognition, they also know that ALDI is doing our part to reduce our impact on the environment by embracing sustainable initiatives across our business.”

ALDI embraces sustainable initiatives not only in California, but across all its operations. ALDI stores have a smaller carbon footprint than traditional grocery stores, due to their smaller size. ALDI stores also feature environmentally friendly building materials and state-of-the-art lighting and refrigeration systems that reduce energy use.

“As ALDI expands operations to California, we will continue to uphold these values by ensuring our California stores feature sustainable building elements designed to reduce our carbon footprint through energy efficiency, waste reduction and green building design,” said Sumida.

Action for Healthy Kids and ALDI partner to improve overall wellness environments in schools and communities in Southern California

CHICAGO, 2016-Apr-18 — /EPR Retail News/ — Action for Healthy Kids (AFHK) and ALDI have partnered to invest in Southern California communities through AFHK’s School Grants for Healthy Kids initiative. The ALDI investment of $175,000 will help 15 Southern California area schools to improve their overall wellness environments through grants and technical assistance during the 2015-2016 school year.

Funding supports the establishment or expansion of school health teams; implementation of school wellness programs to drive effective health initiatives utilizing AFHK’s Game On program to identify and target areas of need; and engagement of parents, community members and ALDI employees to promote wellness at school and at home. The ALDI-funded program will benefit more than 11,000 students at the selected schools where, on average, 71 percent of students are eligible for free and reduced meals.

ALDI is committed to supporting the communities it serves, and this landmark partnership is the first of many ongoing efforts to support local communities in existing and new markets as the grocery chain continues to grow. Since 2011, ALDI has worked with AFHK to help Chicago schools create sustainable changes that foster healthy behaviors. With its expansion to Southern California, ALDI will continue its commitment to help school-aged children receive vital nutrition education and physical activity tools that will empower them to choose healthy behaviors for a lifetime.

“Children spend the most time outside of the home in school, nearly 1,200 hours per year. Evidence shows healthy school environments not only foster healthy eating and physical activity habits among students, but also create a culture where kids are better prepared to focus and learn,” said Rob Bisceglie, CEO, Action for Healthy Kids. “We look forward to advancing the wellness of California schools and communities with the help and support of ALDI.”

Initiatives are wide ranging across elementary, middle and high schools, and may include refurbishing outdoor play spaces, piloting aeroponic school gardens, implementing farm-to-school programs, hosting physical activity initiatives (before, during and after-school) and nutrition classes for students and parents, and purchasing physical activity equipment. The following schools were awarded based on need and the strength of the proposed school wellness programming:

  • San Gorgonio Middle School, Beaumont
  • Bennett-Kew Elementary School, Inglewood
  • Eastside Academy/Transitional Learning Center, Lancaster
  • La Quinta Middle School, La Quinta
  • 112th Street Elementary School, Los Angeles
  • Glenfeliz Boulevard Elementary School, Los Angeles
  • Palm Springs High School, Palm Springs
  • Eugene Field Elementary School, Pasadena
  • Moore Middle School, Redlands
  • J.C. Boyd Elementary School, Rialto
  • Loma Vista Middle School, Riverside
  • Wells Middle School, Riverside
  • Sierra Madre Middle School, Sierra Madre
  • Olive Elementary School, Vista
  • Inland Leaders Charter School, Yucaipa

“Our partnership with AFHK is an important step for us as we enter the Southern California market this year,” said Gordon Nesbit, Moreno Valley division vice president for ALDI. “We know that schools can play a vital role in promoting wellness within their communities, and we are excited to partner with AFHK to help create healthier places for Southern California’s children, as well as for our employees and their families.”

All ALDI-funded schools will participate in Every Kid Healthy Week (April 25-29) through events that will spotlight their wellness programs and accomplishments. The ALDI-funded grants are part of nearly $1.7 million in School Grants for Healthy Kids awarded by AFHK nationwide in the 2015-2016 school year.

On March 24, ALDI opened eight of the 45 Southern California locations the grocer plans to open in 2016. The opening of ALDI stores in California marks a significant achievement in the company’s fiveyear strategic plan to open 650 new stores across the nation. By the end of 2018, ALDI expects to operate nearly 2,000 stores, enabling ALDI to offer its fresh, high quality groceries at everyday low prices to more than 45 million customers each month.

Batavia, Ill., 2016-Apr-07 — /EPR Retail News/ — Residents in Los Angeles and Orange Counties will soon be able to experience a whole new way to grocery shop at ALDI, one of America’s favorite grocers. On Thursday, April 21, ALDI will open 10 new Southern California locations, six of which are in Los Angeles County, three in Orange County and one new store in San Bernardino County. The easy-to-shop food market takes a simple approach to grocery shopping that translates into big savings for ALDI shoppers. In fact, shoppers have found that switching from national brands to ALDI exclusive brands can save them up to 50 percent** on their grocery bill.

“California customers who are new to ALDI might not recognize our brands, but they definitely will recognize the great taste and quality, and will love our everyday low prices,” said Gordon Nesbit, Moreno Valley division vice president for ALDI. “It’s clear shoppers throughout the country, including those in the Southland, appreciate saving money on the groceries they buy the most, including everything from fresh meat, fruits, vegetables, dairy and bakery items to organic and gluten-free foods. And it’s our approach to making great quality groceries affordable that has helped ALDI become one of the fastest growing retailers in the US. We look forward to our continued expansion across Southern California.”

The April grand openings are the next step in the grocery retailer’s plan to open approximately 45 stores in Southern California by the end of 2016, eight of which opened last month. The Southern California store openings play a significant role in the company’s strategic plan to expand to nearly 2,000 ALDI stores from coast-to-coast by the end of 2018.

Now Accepting Credit Cards at Stores Nationwide
ALDI recently announced plans to accept credit cards – including Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express – at all of its stores nationwide. The move to accept credit cards is yet another way ALDI is making grocery shopping as simple and enjoyable as possible for its more than 30 million customers each month.

ALDI Grand Opening Celebrations
Stores celebrating their grand opening on April 21 will host an official ribbon-cutting ceremony at 8:45 a.m. The first 100 shoppers to arrive at each store will receive a golden ticket redeemable for an ALDI gift certificate of various amounts, and all shoppers will be invited to enter an on-site sweepstakes for a chance to win Produce for a Year. Additionally, shoppers on April 21, 22, 23 and 24 will receive a complimentary ALDI reusable eco-bag, while supplies last.

“Great-quality groceries and everyday low prices make for an unmatched combination that shoppers love, and that couldn’t be more true than it is right here in California,” said Gordon Nesbit, Moreno Valley division vice president for ALDI. “We are thrilled to be part of the SoCal community and are humbled by the very warm welcome that we’ve received so far. We encourage everyone to stop by and check us out… and start getting fresh groceries for less. ”

ALDI removes certified synthetic colors, partially hydrogenated oils (PHOs) and added MSG from all of its exclusive brand food products

Grocery Store Removes Certified Synthetic Colors, Partially Hydrogenated Oils and Added MSG

Batavia, Ill., 2015-10-3 — /EPR Retail News/ — ALDI, the nation’s low-price grocery leader*, announced that it has removed certified synthetic colors, removed partially hydrogenated oils (PHOs) and removed added MSG from all of its exclusive brand food products. This announcement is part of the company’s efforts to expand store offerings and address customers’ preferences and needs about particular ingredients in their food. With 90 percent of ALDI products being sold under private labels, ALDI is able to ensure that customers have a wide selection of options free of these ingredients and available at the low prices they are known for.

“At ALDI, we are dedicated to the well-being of our customers by providing high quality groceries at the lowest possible prices and offering foods shoppers can feel good about serving their families,” said Jason Hart, CEO, ALDI. “Our decision to remove these ingredients from all of our exclusive brand foods delivers on our ongoing commitment to meet the evolving preferences of our customers. Since more than 90 percent of the products we sell are under our exclusive brands, eliminating these ingredients will have a real impact on the over 30 million people who shop in our stores.”

“Today’s shoppers are more involved with food than ever before. They want to know everything about their food and the companies that supply them – especially as it relates to ingredients and the impact on their families,” said Phil Lempert, editor of SupermarketGuru.com and food industry analyst. “ALDI is leading the supermarket industry in rightly responding to the science that shows the implications of these ingredients, and meeting the needs of the increasingly savvy consumers who don’t want artificial or potentially harmful ingredients in the products they buy.”

As a retailer focused on private label brands, ALDI continues to take a leading role in responding to consumer demand by removing these ingredients from the vast majority of their products. The company began removing these ingredients in 2014, and customers will begin to see these products in stores this fall, with all reformulated product lines in stores by the end of 2015.

Over the past several years, ALDI has enhanced its product offerings to provide customers with even more options they can feel good about, including:

  • Fresh Produce: Increased fresh, organic produce offerings, including organic bananas, apples, tomatoes, avocados and salad mixes.
  • New Product Lines: Introduced its SimplyNature line of products, which is free from more than 125 ingredients, as well as a gluten-free line of products under the ALDI exclusive brand, liveGfree.
  • Labeling: Highlighted nutritional facts on the front of all ALDI exclusive brand food packages for shoppers to easily find key nutritional information.
  • Dietitian’s Picks: Established the ALDI Dietitian’s Picks that showcases existing products hand-selected by registered dietitians for their nutritional value to help guide shoppers in their purchasing decisions.

Additionally, ALDI partners with registered dietitians through its Advisory Council to provide tips, recipes and meal-planning ideas that make healthy eating easy and affordable for families.

“I’m happy that ALDI is listening to people’s concerns about synthetic dyes and eliminating them in all of their products,” said Sally Kuzemchak, registered dietitian, author and ALDI advisory council member. “Shopping at ALDI makes it easier for busy parents to stock up on quality ingredients at a great value for their families.”

ALDI completed its purchase of 66 real estate assets from the Delhaize Group

ALDI Grows Footprint in Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey with plans to open ALDI stores at 30 former Bottom Dollar Food Locations

Batavia, Ill., 2015-3-30 — /EPR Retail News/ — ALDI, the nation’s low price grocery leader*, today announced it has completed its purchase of 66 real estate assets from the Delhaize Group. The transaction includes the land, buildings and leasehold improvements associated with Delhaize’s recently retired Bottom Dollar Food operation.

“ALDI has been offering fresh, affordable groceries in Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey communities for 20 years. With the completion of this real estate transaction, we are able to ramp up our expansion plans in the region to meet the growing demand for the ALDI difference: highquality groceries at everyday low prices in an easy-to-shop store,” said Jason Hart, CEO, ALDI. “While we are excited to pursue opening ALDI stores at 30 of these locations, we will continue working with those communities where we will not be using the sites to ensure a smooth transition.”

In December 2013, ALDI embarked on an accelerated growth plan to open 650 new stores by the end of 2018, with the goal of operating nearly 2,000 stores across the country. ALDI also is planning to invest more than $3 billion to pay for land, facilities and equipment. When the expansion is complete, ALDI will have stores coast-to-coast and anticipates serving more than 45 million customers per month. The expansion is expected to create more than 10,000 new jobs at ALDI stores, warehouses and division offices.

“At ALDI, we are committed to being an employer of choice as we know the significant contributions that our people add to the business by providing excellent service day after day,” said Hart. “To attract and retain the best talent, we are proud to offer our employees generous compensation that is higher than those of other grocery retailers in the market. In addition, associates working at least 25 hours per week receive full health benefits, and all ALDI employees are invited to participate in our 401(k) program.”

Growth is accelerating at ALDI due to the appeal of its unique business model that lets smart shoppers save up to 50 percent** on more than 1,300 of the most commonly purchased grocery items, including more than 70 varieties of fresh fruits and vegetables, including organic produce. In fact, ALDI has been recognized as the nation’s low-price grocery leader for four consecutive years, as well as one of the top three favorite grocery store chains in America, according to consumer surveys* conducted by Market Force Information, Inc., the world’s leading customer intelligence solutions company.

“Not only are we growing our geographic footprint, but we’re expanding our product offerings as well. We continue to increase our healthy food and on-trend options, including fresh produce, USDA choice meats, dairy products and baked goods, along with our new SimplyNature line that includes several organic items, and our liveGfree line of gluten-free products,” added Hart. “With everything ALDI has to offer, it’s no surprise to us that more and more people are discovering that they don’t have to sacrifice quality and taste to save money by shopping at ALDI.”

ALDI generates savings for its customers through a low-overhead approach that focuses on offering high quality, premium products and includes cost-saving measures such as:

  • Volume purchasing: By concentrating its full buying power on 1,300 of the most commonly purchased grocery items in the most common size, ALDI secures sizable discounts.
  • Exclusive brand products: More than 90 percent of products at ALDI are their own exclusive brands rather than national brands.
    • In the ALDI Test Kitchen, ALDI ensures that its products meet or exceed the quality and taste of national name brands.
    • All ALDI food products are backed by the Double Guarantee. If for any reason a customer is not 100 percent satisfied with any ALDI food product, ALDI will gladly replace the product AND refund the purchase price.
  • Special Buys: Each week, ALDI offers 20-30 food and non-food products at a great value that include everything from small kitchen appliances and seasonal items to outdoor furniture and gardening tools.
  • No hidden costs: ALDI has a streamlined approach that avoids non-essential services such as banking, pharmacies, check cashing and bagging clerks. Those savings result in lower prices for consumers.

Grocer Continues to Invest in Indianapolis Area

Indianapolis, Ind., 2014-9-25— /EPR Retail News/ — ALDI, the nation’s low-price grocery leader*, will continue to offer grocery shoppers a smarter alternative as the select assortment discount grocer opens its newest Indianapolis-area stores on Friday, Oct. 10. New stores will be located at 9701 E. Washington St. in Indianapolis and 300 S. State Road 135 in Greenwood. A third store at 16971 Clover Road in Noblesville will reopen after completing a remodel.

“ALDI has been a proud member of the Indianapolis community for more than 30 years,” said Laura Bauer, Greenwood division vice president for ALDI. “We continue to invest in creating an inviting shopping experience for our customers. In addition to the stores opening in October, we have replaced or remodeled five stores in the last three years and plan to open three stores next year. We’ll have 20 stores in the Indianapolis area by the end of 2015.”

To celebrate the store openings, ALDI will host ribbon-cutting ceremonies at 9 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 10, at each of the stores. The public is invited to attend. Following the ceremonies, the first 100 shoppers at each store will receive a golden ticket. Tickets contain ALDI gift certificates in varying amounts. Customers can also tour the store, sample ALDI exclusive brand products and enter an on-site sweepstakes for a chance to win a year’s supply of ALDI produce. ALDI currently carries nearly 70 varieties of fruits and vegetables, including several organic produce items.

To continue the opening celebration, ALDI will feature a holiday entertaining demonstration with Food Stylist Janice Stahl on Nov. 8 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the new store in Greenwood. Customers are invited to attend to learn tips on making holiday gatherings easy and affordable.

Shoppers who take a fresh look at ALDI can expect to find more than 1,300 of the most commonly purchased items sold under ALDI exclusive brands for prices up to 50 percent less** than traditional supermarkets. In addition, all three stores feature high ceilings, natural lighting and environmentally-friendly building materials – such as recycled materials and energy-saving refrigeration and light bulbs.
