Wakefern Food Corp. recorded retail sales of $16.3 billion for the 52-week fiscal year ending September 30, 2017

Keasbey, NJ, 2017-Nov-01 — /EPR Retail News/ — Wakefern Food Corp. Chairman and CEO Joseph S. Colalillo, President and COO Joe Sheridan and Executive Vice President Chris Lane addressed Wakefern shareholders, store management and staff at the company’s annual shareholder meeting October 26 in East Brunswick, NJ.

The company reported record retail sales of $16.3 billion for the 52-week fiscal year ending September 30, 2017, a 1.5 percent increase from the prior year. The largest retailer-owned cooperative in the United States, Wakefern and its members opened four new ShopRite® stores, two The Fresh Grocer® stores and two Price Rite® Marketplace stores during the same period.

“Our family-owned-and-operated supermarkets and their dedicated associates supported by knowledgeable and innovative Wakefern staff make the difference in this business and serve as the foundation for our strength and success,” Joseph Colalillo told an audience of nearly 900 people at the Hilton in East Brunswick.

Colalillo announced the retirement of Neil Duffy, President, Price Rite Marketplace, a registered trademark of Wakefern with 64 grocery stores in nine states.

“Neil’s dedication and hard work helped grow the popular Price Rite brand over the last 12 years, and we thank him for his service to Wakefern,” said Colalillo.

He also announced the retirement of Larry Collins from Wakefern’s Board of Directors and the addition of Patrick J. Burns, CEO of Burns’ Family Neighborhood Markets, to the board.

“We thank Larry for his service and commitment to the board. He will remain active in the cooperative and his own company, Collins Family Markets, which operates ShopRite stores in Philadelphia, Eddystone and Glenolden, PA,” noted Colalillo. “We welcome to the board Patrick Burns, who brought The Fresh Grocer stores into the cooperative in 2013. We look forward to working with Pat and the rest of the board to shape future success.”

Joe Sheridan recapped the company’s accomplishments over the last year, including its expansion of ShopRite’s popular Wholesome Pantry line of products made with simple, clean ingredients, and the introduction this year of its newest own brand, ShopRite Trading Company.

Wakefern shareholders re-elected to the Board of Directors at Thursday’s meeting include: Joseph Colalillo, Chairman and CEO; Larri Wolfson, Irv Glass and Dominick J. Romano, Vice Chairmen; Lawrence Inserra, Jr., Treasurer; Jeffrey Brown, Assistant Treasurer; Richard Saker, Secretary; and Ned Gladstein and Nicholas Sumas, Assistant Secretaries. Joe Sheridan was also re-elected as President and COO, and Chris Lane was elected as Executive Vice President.

ShopRite launches new private label line of free-from and organic products — Wholesome Pantry

Keasbey, NJ, 2016-Dec-28 — /EPR Retail News/ — ShopRite has announced the launch of Wholesome Pantry, a new private label line of free-from and organic products available exclusively at all of its more than 270 stores located in New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Maryland, Delaware and Pennsylvania.

The new brand, marketed as Wholesome Pantry and Wholesome Pantry Organic, is designed as an accessible alternative for customers seeking cleaner ingredients and simpler labeling.  Wholesome Pantry’s free-from line includes products void of 110 ingredients and contains no artificial additives, flavors or preservatives. The organic line is USDA-certified organic and complies with standards set by the USDA National Organic Program.

The Wholesome Pantry lineup includes products found in nearly every aisle, including frozen, produce, dairy, and meat, along with more than 35 wholesome snack varieties, such as Almond Energy Mix and Organic Banana Chips. Over 100 Wholesome Pantry items are available on shelves now, with that number expected to triple in the coming months. The products are also available to customers who shop online via ShopRite’s popular ShopRite from Home service.

ShopRite first began offering organic items in 1999. Wholesome Pantry is its newest entry into ShopRite’s ever-increasing portfolio of better-for-you products.

Wakefern Food Corp. announces the promotion of Chris Lane to Executive Vice President

Keasbey, NJ, 2016-Dec-07 — /EPR Retail News/ — Wakefern Food Corp. President and COO Joe Sheridan has announced the promotion of Chris Lane, Senior Vice President of Product Divisions, to Executive Vice President of the company.

Lane, a 13-year veteran of the company, will guide day-to-day operations and strategy planning for Wakefern. The largest U.S. retailer-owned cooperative, Wakefern comprises 50 member companies that own and operate supermarkets under the ShopRite, The Fresh Grocer, PriceRite and Dearborn Market banners. The 70-year-old company reported retail sales of $16 billion during its annual meeting in October.

“Our goal was to select an individual who would honor our past and at the same time challenge the status quo to ensure a bright future for Wakefern and our members. We’re happy to announce that Chris Lane has been appointed to the position,” said Sheridan.  “Chris is innovative, forward thinking and willing to take the calculated risks required to navigate a challenging competitive environment where emerging technologies and changing consumer preferences require us to be nimble and able to respond with urgency.”

Lane joined Wakefern in 2003 as Vice President of Pharmacy and in 2005 added Health and Beauty Care (HBC) to his responsibilities. By 2008, he was promoted to Vice President, Grocery, Direct Store Delivery and Commercial Bakery. In 2011 he was promoted again to Senior Vice President, Non-Perishables, and most recently was named Senior Vice President, Product Divisions where, in addition to his responsibility for Wakefern’s various procurement divisions, he also led health and wellness initiatives.

Prior to joining Wakefern, Lane served as Vice President of Pharmacy at Duane Reade. He received his bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy from the University of the Sciences, College of Pharmacy in Philadelphia, PA.

He is a member of the National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) Board of Directors and a member of the Trinitas Regional Medical Center Board of Directors.

Lane resides in Fair Haven, NJ with his wife Kim and three daughters.
