CVS Health recognized with 2018 PBMI Excellence Award for Care Management Strategies

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2018-Mar-09 — /EPR Retail News/ — CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) announced today (March 7, 2018) that the Pharmacy Benefit Management Institute (PBMI) awarded the company the 2018 PBMI Excellence Award for Care Management Strategies. The award recognizes the ScriptPath Prescription Schedule, which was developed by CVS Health to help provide a consolidated view of a patient’s current CVS Pharmacy prescriptions with an easy-to-understand schedule showing how and when to take each medication.

“We are pleased to be recognized with this award for our industry-leading work to bring the ScriptPath Prescription Schedule to patients as we help them on their path to better health,” said Troyen A. Brennan, MD Chief Medical Officer, CVS Health. “For CVS Health, this award validates our efforts to develop innovative programs that improve patient engagement and medication adherence, better manage chronic diseases like diabetes and help clients keep their health care costs down.”

The average American adult fills nine prescriptions annually, with people older than 65 filling an average of 20 prescriptions a year. Unfortunately, approximately half of patients report being confused about how and when to take their medications, contributing to the 50 percent of patients with chronic conditions who stop taking their medications within the first year of diagnosis. Further, studies show a 5.7 percent to 6.8 percent decrease in adherence for each dose added to a medication regimen. For patients who are not optimally adherent to prescribed therapies, hospital readmission rates increase by as much as 69 percent, which can result in annual U.S. health care costs between $100 to $300 billion.

The ScriptPath Prescription Schedule offers patients with chronic conditions and complex regimens a personalized prescription schedule with easy-to-understand icons explaining which medication to take, when it should be taken and how much should be taken in each dose. It is designed to improve patient understanding and safety and help simplify how patients take their medications. The schedule is generated by our proprietary Clinical Engine, a robust scientific system created by CVS Pharmacy, which automatically reviews all of a patient’s current CVS Pharmacy prescription information and prescribers’ instructions. Using clinical data, the Clinical Engine slots a patient’s medications into up to four dosing times per day morning, midday, evening and bedtime and recommends dosing times for each medication based on the most effective times of day for the medications to be taken. Deborah Adler, a designer known for her past work on Target’s ClearRx prescription packaging system and the inventor and lead designer of the new ScriptPath system, worked with the CVS Health team to develop the easy-to-understand icons and an intuitive layout for each of the ScriptPath offerings.

In addition to the Prescription Schedule, CVS Pharmacy is in the process of rolling out the ScriptPath Prescription Label and Prescription Overview to all stores nationwide this spring. This will extend the use of the easy-to-understand design of the Prescription Schedule to the label on the prescription bottle as well as the prescription bag tag.

CVS Health installs 14 new medication disposal units inside CVS Pharmacy locations in Rhode Island

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2018-Mar-08 — /EPR Retail News/ — CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) announced today (March 6, 2018) that the company has expanded its safe medication disposal program inside select CVS Pharmacy locations in Rhode Island to help facilitate proper and timely disposal of opioids and other medications that could be diverted or misused if left in people’s homes. Attorney General Peter Kilmartin, U.S. Attorney Stephen Dambruch, and Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves joined representatives from CVS Health at a Pawtucket CVS Pharmacy store to launch the program today.

“With a presence in nearly 10,000 communities across the country, we witness the impact of the alarming and rapidly growing epidemic of opioid addiction and misuse,” said Tom Davis, Vice President of Professional Services for CVS Pharmacy. “Expanding our safe medication disposal efforts in Rhode Island is an extension of the initiatives in place across our company to fight the opioid abuse epidemic and fulfil our purpose of helping people on their path to better health.”

The 14 new medication disposal units that will be installed inside CVS Pharmacy locations in Rhode Island will supplement an additional 14 units CVS Health has donated to police departments across the state. Nationwide, CVS Health has donated more than 850 units to local law enforcement, collecting more than 140 metric tons, or more than 300,000 pounds of unwanted medication.

Attorney General Kilmartin said, “I applaud CVS Health for recognizing that to effectively tackle and defeat the opioid epidemic in this country, all stakeholders need to work together in a coordinated effort. Expanding the company’s prescription drug disposal kiosks to stores across Rhode Island will make it easier for customers to safely dispose of expired, unused, and unwanted prescription opioids and other prescription drugs before they can be abused or diverted for illicit purposes.”

The expansion of the safe medication disposal program to 750 CVS Pharmacy locations across the U.S. was included among the enhancements to the company’s strategy to address and prevent opioid abuse announced in September 2017. As part of that effort, the company also said it would align opioid utilization management with CDC Guideline for CVS Caremark clients and members, complementing measures already in place.

This work builds on ongoing company initiatives, including the Pharmacists Teach program, which brings CVS Pharmacists to local schools to talk to teens and parents about the dangers of abusing prescription drugs. More than 300,000 teens nationally including more than 3,600 in Rhode Island have already participated in the program. CVS Health has also worked to expand access to the opioid overdose-reversal drug naloxone in 46 states, including Rhode Island.

CVS Health recognized as one of the World’s 50 Most Innovative Companies List for 2018 by Fast Company

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2018-Feb-21 — /EPR Retail News/ — CVS Health (NYSE: CVS), the nation’s largest pharmacy innovation company, was recognized today (Feb. 20, 2018) by Fast Company as one of the World’s 50 Most Innovative Companies List for 2018. CVS Health was also honored as No. 7 on Fast Company’s Top 10 Most Innovative Companies in Health.

Fast Company’s 50 Most Innovative Companies List recognizes leading enterprises and rising newcomers that exemplify the best in business and innovation. The list was curated from Fast Company’s Top 10 lists, which recognize pioneering companies across 36 categories, including health. More than three dozen Fast Company editors, reporters, and contributors surveyed thousands of companies to create these lists.

“CVS Health is honored to be included by Fast Company on their 50 Most Innovative Companies list and as one of the Top 10 Most Innovative Companies in Health,” said Larry J. Merlo, CVS Health President and CEO. “As a pharmacy-innovation company, we are committed to finding new ways of delivering on our purpose of helping people on their path to better health and I am very proud that our enterprise achievements are being recognized.”

In 2017, CVS Pharmacy introduced a first-of-its kind prescription management system, ScriptPath. Using easy to understand icons, the new system was designed to improve patient understanding and enhance patient safety by simplifying how patients take medications and how caregivers give them. The personalized prescription schedule is generated by a proprietary scientific system which automatically reviews all of a patient’s current CVS Pharmacy prescription information and prescribers’ instructions and uses clinical data to provide a schedule of the most effective times of day to take the medications.

In addition, CVS Caremark, the pharmacy benefit management (PBM) business of CVS Health, launched Transform Diabetes Care in 2017 to help the company’s PBM members with diabetes lower A1C levels and better manage their condition. The program integrates PBM cost management strategies with personalized, high touch support including in-person pharmacist counseling, diabetes-specific coaching and care by a nurse practitioner at MinuteClinic. Enrolled members are also offered a connected glucometer, which shares their blood glucose levels with their pharmacist-led team via a health cloud, enabling the team to identify potential issues and intervene with one-on-one coaching.

CVS Pharmacy has also introduced a reimagined, health-focused store design with an expanded offering of health, beauty and better-for-you food options. As part of this effort, the company removed artificial trans-fats from all store brand products 18 months ahead of the requirement to do so and announced that chemicals of concern would be eliminated from nearly 600 store brand beauty and personal care items by 2019.

To address the rising costs of prescription drugs, the company began offering a less expensive epinephrine auto-injector, generic Adrenaclick, for patients with life-threatening allergies in January 2017. CVS Pharmacy also introduced same-day, free prescription delivery in Manhattan in December 2017 and announced plans for nationwide next-day prescription delivery in 2018.

To strengthen the health of communities across the country, CVS Health announced that it would enhance opioid utilization management protocols, install 750 new drug disposal collection units in its retail pharmacies to collect unwanted medication and continue the Pharmacist Teach program, which brings CVS pharmacists into schools to educate students on the dangers of prescription drugs.

This recognition is the latest in a series of third-party acknowledgments for CVS Health, including FORTUNE’S Most Admired Companies, DiversityInc’s Top 50 Companies for Diversity, Points of Light’s Top 50 Community-Minded Companies, Corporate Responsibility Magazine’s 100 Best Corporate Citizens, Human Rights Campaign’s Top Places to Work for LGBT Equality and the Disability Equality Index’s Top Places to Work.

CVS Health extends its commitment to women’s health with no cost “Know Your Numbers” heart health screenings at MinuteClinic

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2018-Feb-07 — /EPR Retail News/ — As part of its continued support of the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women movement, CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) today ( February 5, 2018) extended its commitment to women’s health by offering no cost “Know Your Numbers” heart health screenings at MinuteClinic, the company’s retail medical clinic, every Wednesday in February.

According to a recent national poll, commissioned by CVS Health, women in the U.S. are increasingly aware of the dangers of heart disease and recognize it as the #1 killer of women, however few acknowledge their personal risk factors that contribute to heart disease.

As a leading health care company committed to addressing complex chronic conditions like heart disease, CVS Health is also creating an opportunity for customers to give the gift of heart health by making a donation to life-saving cardiovascular research and education at the register at CVS Pharmacy stores through February 17.

“Cardiovascular diseases kill nearly one in three women each year and their effects have touched many of our colleagues and customers,” said Lisa Bisaccia, Chief Human Resources Officer, CVS Health, and incoming national volunteer chair for Go Red For Women. “By supporting Go Red For Women, we are creating an easy way for people to take the steps they need to prevent heart disease and to show their support for family, friends and neighbors who are affected.”

Customers can visit their local MinuteClinic on February 7, 14, 21, and 28 and receive a heart health preventive screening at no-cost to learn the five key personal health numbers that can help them determine their risk for heart disease total cholesterol, HDL (good) cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar and body mass index. MinuteClinic is a convenient and affordable destination for preventive care all year long, with 1 in 2 Americans living within 10 miles of a MinuteClinic.

“Knowing your numbers is more important than ever, following recently updated guidelines from the American Heart Association that indicate nearly half of Americans are at risk for major health problems as a result of high blood pressure,” said Angela Patterson, DNP, FNP-BC, NEA-BC, and Chief Nurse Practitioner Officer at MinuteClinic.

“Knowing the numbers that may indicate risk not only allows someone to assess risk for heart disease and stroke, but it can determine what actions, if any, are needed to manage your risk,” Patterson added.

The screenings at MinuteClinic are sponsored by Bayer Aspirin, in recognition of CVS Health’s support of Go Red For Women. For a list of MinuteClinic locations, visit www.minuteclinic.com/locations.

In 2017, CVS Health announced a broad-based commitment to Go Red For Women, a national movement to raise awareness of heart disease and stroke in women and to empower women to take control of their health. As part of that commitment, the company pledged to raise a minimum of $10 million through 2019 to support life-saving cardiovascular research and education.

CVS Pharmacy customers can support Go Red For Women by making a $1, $3 or larger donation at the register at CVS Pharmacy stores nationwide or online at www.cvshealth.com/GoRed through February 17. Additionally, for every pack of Extra Gum sold at CVS Pharmacy this February, CVS Pharmacy will donate $1 to Go Red For Women up to $100,000. Every dollar raised helps fund lifesaving research and awareness that adds more time to women’s lives.

CVS Health introduces Transform Rheumatoid Arthritis Care program to improve both clinical care and cost management for RA

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2018-Jan-18 — /EPR Retail News/ — CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) today introduced Transform Rheumatoid Arthritis Care to help the company’s pharmacy benefit management (PBM) clients better manage care and costs for Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). The program is the latest addition to the company’s suite of condition-specific, highly personalized Transform Care programs and adds value-based management strategies including outcomes based contracts and a new indication-based formulary for autoimmune conditions to CVS Health’s integrated pharmacy care model. Given that the cost and utilization of drugs to treat RA are a top drug trend and spend driver, accounting for nearly half of overall specialty drug trend, this new multi-pronged approach also includes a trend guarantee based on the program’s ability to improve both clinical care and cost management for RA.

“Rheumatoid arthritis is a complex condition and is one of the top drivers of specialty drug trend for our PBM clients,” said Troyen A. Brennan, M.D., executive vice president and chief medical officer of CVS Health. “By leveraging our integrated pharmacy care model, we can provide highly personalized, whole-patient support through our specialty pharmacy and embedded AccordantCare nurses, while harnessing the power of our PBM’s tools to encourage appropriate use of and adherence to lower cost therapies.”

The Transform RA Care program is designed to help encourage appropriate use of lower-cost therapies through pharmacy network and utilization management tools along with value-based management strategies such as outcomes-based contracts and a new indication-based formulary for autoimmune conditions. Outcomes-based contracts tie reimbursement for a drug to achieving a specific target or goal. If the target is not met for instance if the patient discontinues therapy, indicating the drug was not well tolerated the manufacturer may be required to provide additional value. In addition, the indication-based approach determines formulary placement for drugs based on the specific diagnosis rather than for the therapy class as a whole. This multi-pronged approach is designed to help clients better manage trend and receive a trend guarantee for these expensive drugs.

“Treating Rheumatoid Arthritis costs the U.S. health care system $19 billion a year. Both spend and trend have also been rising for the autoimmune category in recent years and market analysts expect this category to be the fastest-growing drug class over the next five years,” said Alan Lotvin, M.D., executive vice president of CVS Specialty, the specialty pharmacy of CVS Health. “Our program is unique in that we can pull together resources enabled by our integrated pharmacy care model to deliver both a truly member-focused clinical management program while also helping to manage the rising costs within the autoimmune category through new approaches to contracting and formulary management.”

Members enrolled in Transform RA Care will continue to receive proactive, personalized care and disease-specific expertise from the RA CareTeam, a team of specially-trained pharmacists and Accordant nurses in our RA Center of Excellence. The RA CareTeam provides a range of support specific to the member’s needs including symptom, comorbidity and side effect management; care coordination; and coaching and education. The RA CareTeam also offers initial clinical assessments, benefits verification and medication dispensing and distribution. In addition, proactive patient outreach can help improve engagement rates, improve adherence to medication, and reduce complications, such as hospital and emergency room visits. Members with RA also have access to innovative digital tools to help them start and stay on their therapies and, through Specialty Connect, the ability to pick up their medication at a local CVS Pharmacy or have it delivered to their home or office by mail.

Clients enrolled in the Transform RA Care program could expect to see savings of up to 5 percent on their annual spend for RA drugs. For example a client that manages 100,000 lives could see up to $500,000 in annual savings.

RA is the second most common form of arthritis, impacting more than 1.5 million people in the U.S. It is characterized by chronic inflammation of the joints and, over time, can lead to bone deformation. The disease is also complex and hard to manage, and our research shows that approximately one quarter of patients who start on an autoimmune drug discontinue therapy within 180 days, which can lead to poor health outcomes and higher costs for payors and members. Those with RA can benefit from holistic disease management, which can help improve medication adherence, address gaps in care, and reduce condition-related complications and visits to the hospital and ER. In addition, cost management strategies can create additional value for both payors and patients.

CVS Health to acquire Aetna for $77 billion

  • Combines CVS Health’s Unmatched Local Presence and Clinical Capabilities with Aetna’s Leading Health Care Benefits and Services
  • Provides Greater Integration of Care, Empowering Consumers and their Health Professionals to Make More Informed Decisions
  • Transaction Expected to Generate Significant Synergies for Shareholders and Benefits for Customers

WOONSOCKET, R.I. and HARTFORD, Conn., 2017-Dec-04 — /EPR Retail News/ — CVS Health (NYSE: CVS), a company at the forefront of changing the health care landscape, and Aetna (NYSE: AET), one of the nation’s leading diversified health care benefits companies, today (December 3, 2017) announced the execution of a definitive merger agreement under which CVS Health will acquire all outstanding shares of Aetna for a combination of cash and stock. Under the terms of the merger agreement, which has been unanimously approved today by the boards of directors of each company, Aetna shareholders will receive $145.00 per share in cash and 0.8378 CVS Health shares for each Aetna share. The transaction values Aetna at approximately $207 per share or approximately $69 billion1. Including the assumption of Aetna’s debt, the total value of the transaction is $77 billion.

This transaction fills an unmet need in the current health care system and presents a unique opportunity to redefine access to high-quality care in lower cost, local settings whether in the community, at home, or through digital tools.

CVS Health President and Chief Executive Officer Larry J. Merlo said, “This combination brings together the expertise of two great companies to remake the consumer health care experience. With the analytics of Aetna and CVS Health’s human touch, we will create a health care platform built around individuals. We look forward to working with the talented people at Aetna to position the combined company as America’s front door to quality health care, integrating more closely the work of doctors, pharmacists, other health care professionals and health benefits companies to create a platform that is easier to use and less expensive for consumers.”

This is a natural evolution for both companies as they seek to put the consumer at the center of health care delivery. CVS Health has steadily become an integrated health care company, and Aetna has moved beyond being a traditional insurer to focus more on consumer well-being.

“This is the next step in our journey, positioning the combined company to dramatically further empower consumers. Together with CVS Health, we will better understand our members’ health goals, guide them through the health care system and help them achieve their best health,” said Mark T. Bertolini, Aetna chairman and CEO. “Aetna has a proud tradition of continually innovating to address unmet consumer needs and providing leading products and services to the marketplace.”

Bertolini continued, “Aetna has a talented and dedicated group of employees working to build a healthier world every day. Our combined company will be more competitive in the marketplace and accelerate progress toward achieving this mission.”

Today, increasing numbers of consumers are taking on more and more responsibility for paying for their health care as the burden of costs is being shifted to them. Together, CVS Health and Aetna will be a trusted community partner who will help consumers better manage the cost of the health care they need. The combined company will also be well positioned to more effectively meet the health needs of many more people, especially the 50 percent of Americans with chronic conditions that account for more than 80 percent of all health care costs. Finally, capabilities developed following this transaction will directly benefit clients of both companies and enable them to better manage their health care costs.

BENEFITS FOR CONSUMERS

Uniquely Integrated, Community-Based Health Care Experience

Consumers will benefit from a uniquely integrated, community-based health care experience. The combined company will also be able to better understand patients’ health goals, guide them through the health care system, and help them achieve their best health. There will be expanded opportunities to bring health care services to consumers every day. CVS Pharmacy locations will include space for wellness, clinical and pharmacy services, vision, hearing, nutrition, beauty, and medical equipment, in addition to the products and services our customers currently enjoy. An entirely new health services offering available in many locations will function as a community-based health hub dedicated to connecting the pathways needed to improve health and answering patients’ questions about their health conditions, as well as prescription drugs and health coverage.

This personalized health care experience will be delivered by connecting Aetna’s extensive network of providers with greater consumer access through CVS Health. This includes more than 9,700 CVS Pharmacy locations and 1,100 MinuteClinic walk-in clinics as well as further extensions into the community through Omnicare’s senior pharmacy solutions, Coram’s infusion services, and the more than 4,000 CVS Health nursing professionals providing in-clinic and home-based care across the nation. As a result, there will be a better opportunity to utilize local care solutions in a more integrated fashion with the goal of improving patient outcomes.

More Integrated Data and Analytics

The entire health care system will also benefit from broader use of data and analytics, leading to improved patient health at substantially lower cost. This will be achieved, for example, by helping patients avoid unnecessary hospital read missions. Twenty percent of Medicare patients are readmitted to the hospital soon after being discharged at significant annual costs, much of which is avoidable. Readmission rates can be cut in half if patients have a complete review of their medications after discharge from the hospital to help them manage their care at home. In addition, home devices to monitor activity levels, pulse, and respiratory rates can be used to prevent read missions. Rather than feeling lost and confused, selected high risk patients discharged from the hospital, or their caregivers, will be able to stop at a health hub location to access services such as medication evaluations, home monitoring and use of durable medical equipment, as needed. All of these services will complement and be integrated with the care provided by their physician and medical team.

Opportunity to Better Fight Chronic Disease

The combined entity will be able to help address the growing cost of treating chronic diseases in important ways. For example, there are 30 million Americans suffering from diabetes, costing the health care system approximately $245 billion annually. Patients with diabetes will receive care in between doctor visits through face-to-face counseling at a store-based health hub and remote monitoring of key indicators such as blood glucose levels. When needed, patients can receive text messages to let them know when their glucose levels deviate from normal ranges. As a follow up, patients can receive counseling on medication adherence, pick up diabetes-related supplies and engage ancillary services such as counsel on weight loss and programs designed to reverse diabetes through nutrition. This will result in better control of their blood sugar levels and better health, which should be appreciated by both patients and their doctors.

“These types of interventions are things that the traditional health care system could be doing,” commented Merlo, “but the traditional health care system lacks the key elements of convenience and coordination that help to engage consumers in their health. That’s what the combination of CVS Health and Aetna will deliver.”

BENEFITS FOR SHAREHOLDERS

As a result of this transaction, shareholders are expected to benefit from a number of outcomes, including enhanced competitive positioning; low- to mid-single digit accretion in the second full year after the close of the transaction, including the ability to deliver $750 million in near-term synergies; and a platform from which to accelerate growth. The combination over the longer term has the potential to deliver significant incremental value as it will spur the development of new products and generate significant new growth opportunities as a uniquely integrated retailer, pharmacy benefits manager and health plan. Aetna shareholders will receive attractive value from the transaction, including $145 per share in cash, and the ability to participate in the future success and high growth potential of the combined company.

National Influenza Vaccination Week: CVS Health encourages families to get their flu shots in preparation for peak flu season

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2017-Dec-01 — /EPR Retail News/ — CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) is encouraging families to get their flu shots during National Influenza Vaccination Week (Dec. 3-9) in preparation for peak flu season. A recent survey released by CVS Health found that nearly two-thirds (61 percent) of Americans get a flu vaccine every year, or plan to get one this year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) established National Influenza Vaccination Week (NIVW) in 2005 to remind people to get vaccinated through the busy holiday season and into the new year, when cases of the flu typically increase.

According to the CDC, only about 40 percent of the U.S. population reported having been vaccinated by the end of November last year. “National Influenza Vaccination Week is a great reminder to make time during the busy holiday season to get your annual flu shot,” said Papatya Tankut, Vice President of Pharmacy Affairs at CVS Health. “With many people gathering for the holidays and flu activity beginning to increase, getting vaccinated will help ensure a healthier holiday for you and your loved ones.”

The flu vaccine is the most effective way to prevent the flu and is considered a preventive service under the Affordable Care Act. The vaccine is fully covered and available at no cost through most insurance plans. With more than 9,700 CVS Pharmacy stores and 1,100 walk-in MinuteClinic locations accepting most insurance plans, CVS Health has made vaccinations quick, easy and accessible for patients.

This year’s flu survey sheds light on the increasing number of factors families consider when deciding where, when, and how to get vaccinated. Among those who have ever received a flu vaccine, the top considerations on where to receive the vaccine include convenience (37%), doctor recommendations (36%) and where insurance is accepted (35%).

The survey also revealed that nearly two in three (65 percent) employed Americans would still go to work even if they were feeling ill with flu-like symptoms.

“The influenza virus is highly contagious and can be easily spread through a workplace environment through direct contact with co-workers or infected surfaces,” said Angela Patterson, Chief Nurse Practitioner Officer at MinuteClinic. “Influenza infection can have potentially serious effects and getting vaccinated is vital to staying healthy, especially when working alongside co-workers who may have already contracted the virus.”

Getting the flu shot protects you and those around you who may be more vulnerable to serious flu illness, like babies and young children, older people, and people with certain chronic health conditions. With seasonal flu outbreaks beginning as early as October and lasting as late as May, it is not too late to get a flu shot as it is the best defense against getting the flu.

Flu shots are available seven days a week, with no appointment necessary at CVS Pharmacy and MinuteClinic locations nationwide, including locations inside select Target stores.1 Consumers can easily find the store closest to them using CVS.com or the CVS Pharmacy app, and for those patients planning to go to MinuteClinic for their flu shot, location information and current wait times can be found on the CVS Pharmacy app or MinuteClinic.com.

In addition, customers will receive a $5 off $25 coupon when they get a flu shot at CVS Pharmacy or MinuteClinic. Patients who receive a flu shot at CVS Pharmacy or MinuteClinic locations inside select Target stores will receive a $5 Target coupon.2

CVS Health survey: majority of Americans agree that the health care system is in need of reform

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2017-Dec-01 — /EPR Retail News/ — Results of a new national survey from CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) released today (November 30, 2017) found that over half (56 percent) of Americans say the U.S. health care system does not work well for them, while overwhelming majorities agree the system is in need of reform (73 percent) and is currently too politicized (69 percent).

The State of Health Care in the United States.
Of those Americans frustrated by the current state of U.S. health care, 65 percent say it is too expensive, and the affordability of health care, health insurance and prescription drugs top the list of Americans’ most urgent concerns.

The results of the national survey of 2,201 adults, conducted online by Morning Consult on behalf of CVS Health in October 2017 and released at the Forbes Health Care Summit, also found that more Americans (41 percent) believe health care in the U.S. has generally gotten worse rather than improved over the past five years. However, when it comes to their personal experience, a plurality say their own health care has largely not changed, and a larger share of Americans say it has gotten better (28 percent) than who say it has gotten worse (23 percent).

Despite generally negative views of health care in the United States, a vast majority of insured respondents (83 percent) say they are somewhat or very satisfied with their health plans. However, nearly a third report that they did not have a choice in the health plan that was offered to them.

At the same time, respondents of the survey are hopeful about the health care system’s future state, particularly for the next generation of Americans. This sentiment is particularly strong among American parents of whom 52 percent say they are optimistic their children will have better health care than they did at their age. They point to innovation as the reason, with 65 percent who say advances in health care will make lives safer and 66 percent who say advances will make lives longer.

However, the survey reveals limits to Americans’ optimism as a skeptical public questions whether effective health care reform will eliminate regulatory barriers to innovation and put patients first. According to the survey, a plurality of Americans (45 percent) feel there is too much regulation in the way of innovation in health care. Furthermore, three out of five Americans say decisions made in health care put the bottom line ahead of patients, whereas only one in five say that either decisions put patients first or they are at least considered equally with the bottom line.

“While we see significant frustration in this poll with the cost and quality of healthcare, there is a sense of hope among Americans about the future,” said CVS Health Chief Medical Officer Troyen A. Brennan, M.D., M.P.H. “These findings underscore a challenging set of pain points in the system which should serve as a catalyst for all players in health care patients, providers, payors and policymakers to work together to pursue the necessary reforms and innovations that improve quality and affordability and make a complex system easier to navigate for a more empowered health care consumer.”

The full set of survey results is available at www.cvshealth.com/stateofhealthcare.

Survey Methodology

This survey was conducted online within the United States between October 19-23, 2017 among 2,201 adults aged 18+ by Morning Consult on behalf of CVS Health. Results from the survey have a margin of error of 2%.

CVS Health offers Meningitis B vaccines to students, faculty and staff at UMass Amherst

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2017-Dec-01 — /EPR Retail News/ — CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) is offering Meningitis B vaccines to students, faculty and staff at UMass Amherst, in response to two confirmed cases of Meningitis B on campus. CVS Pharmacy stores and MinuteClinic walk-in medical clinics have vaccines available to protect patients against the disease.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) determined that the strains of the meningococcal bacteria that caused both student’s infections are closely related, meaning there may be an increased risk of the disease for other undergraduates on campus. UMass Amherst students who have not been vaccinated are encouraged to get vaccinated. In addition, anyone who has had close contact with a person who has been diagnosed with a meningococcal illness, as well as faculty and staff who have conditions such as asplenia, a complement deficiency, or sickle cell anemia, should also receive the vaccine.

Meningitis B vaccines are fairly new and most college students have not received the vaccine previously. All college students are required to receive a vaccine that protect against four other strains of the meningococcal disease (A, C, W, and Y), but that vaccine does not protect against B, which is the cause of the current infections at UMass Amherst.

Vaccination is the most effective way to protect people from meningococcal infection and CVS Pharmacy and MinuteClinic will be offering the Meningitis B vaccine at the following locations1:

  • 165 University Drive, Amherst, MA 01002 (MinuteClinic also available)
  • 76 North Pleasant Street, Amherst, MA 01002
  • 367 Russell Street, Hadley, MA 01035 (Located inside Target)
  • 366 King Street, Northampton, MA 01060 (MinuteClinic also available)
  • 90 Main Street, Northampton, MA 01060
  • 70 West State Street, Granby, MA 01033
  • Crystal Springs Plaza, 151 North Main Street, Belchertown, MA 01007
  • Route 10, 118 Northampton Street, Easthampton, MA 01027
  • 1616 Memorial Drive, Chicopee, MA 01020
  • 400 Beech Street, Holyoke, MA 01040
  • 1176 Granby Road, Chicopee, MA 01020
  • 451 Center Street, Ludlow, MA 01056
  • 250 Whiting Farms Road, Holyoke, MA 01040
  • 50 Holyoke Street, Holyoke, MA 01040 (Located inside Target)
  • 1990 Boston Road, Wilbraham, MA 01095

All CVS Pharmacy locations can order doses of the vaccine upon request and have it available the next day. Pharmacy and medical clinic staff can assist patients in determining whether the vaccine is covered by their insurance plan.

“Immunizations are an important part of preventive care and a critical way to prevent serious diseases, like Meningitis B,” said Tobias Barker, M.D., Chief Medical Officer of MinuteClinic. “Our CVS pharmacists and MinuteClinic nurse practitioners are ready to provide meningitis vaccinations to the UMass Amherst community, and can help ensure that patients stay up to date on vaccinations in the future.”

No appointment is needed to receive a meningitis vaccination. Patients should bring both their health insurance and prescription insurance cards.

CVS Health to provide Real-time benefit information to help eliminate potential dispensing delays and improve patient outcomes

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2017-Nov-29 — /EPR Retail News/ — CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) announced today (November 28, 2017) that its pharmacy benefits manager (PBM), CVS Caremark, will begin providing real-time visibility to member-specific medication costs and available lower-cost therapeutic alternatives at the point of prescribing and at the pharmacy. This enhanced visibility to the patient’s benefit across all points of care can help eliminate potential dispensing delays, improve patient outcomes through increased medication adherence and lower costs for members and payors.

“Patients often do not find out that the medication they were prescribed is not covered or has higher than expected out-of-pocket costs until they go to the pharmacy to pick up their prescription, which can result in patients not filling a prescription, non-adherence and, ultimately, higher downstream health care costs,” said Troyen A. Brennan, MD, Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of CVS Health. “Making detailed, real-time benefit information available for our PBM members and their health care team, whether it’s the doctor or the pharmacist, can help streamline the patient experience and improve health outcomes while also lowering costs for both the patient and the payor.”

Through visibility to “real-time benefits,” prescribers can see specific benefit information for patients supported by CVS Caremark integrated directly into their e-prescribing workflow. Even before they prescribe a drug, prescribers will be able to see the cost of the drug based on the patient’s coverage, including the patient’s remaining deductible, when applicable, and will be able to review up to five clinically appropriate branded alternatives or therapeutically equivalent generic medications specific to the patient’s formulary coverage. Prescribers will also have visibility to requirements, such as prior authorization or step therapy, enabling them to immediately submit an electronic prior authorization request. In addition, pharmacists at all retail pharmacies within the CVS Caremark network will have visibility to the same list of clinically appropriate formulary alternatives provided to the prescriber, and beginning in early 2018, CVS Caremark members will be able to find lower-cost alternatives within the Check Drug Cost tool on Caremark.com.

At CVS Pharmacy, this information will be integrated directly into the pharmacist’s existing workflow, making it easy for them to engage CVS Caremark members about potentially lower-cost alternatives, based on the members’ specific formulary coverage. CVS pharmacists will also be able to easily request a prescription change from the prescriber when needed with a simple one-step process. Beginning in early 2018, as part of the company’s ongoing, enterprise-wide focus on helping patients save money, CVS pharmacists will also be able to see the associated out-of-pocket costs for CVS Caremark members. This will help ensure alignment with the member’s plan design and enable them to access the lowest cost medications within their benefit. For those members for whom drug cost is still a concern, the CVS pharmacist will also be able to share additional cost savings opportunities such as prescription discounts, when available.

“Across the CVS Health enterprise, we are focused on providing patients with the most convenient access to affordable medications, and this innovation enables us to provide our PBM members and their health care providers with direct, easy access to real-time benefit information throughout the health care continuum whether they are at their physician’s office or at the pharmacy,” said Jonathan Roberts, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of CVS Health. “No one else provides this level of member-specific actionable drug benefit information across so many points of care, which can help simplify and streamline the process of getting a patient on the most appropriate and affordable therapy and increase member engagement and satisfaction with their care.”

Medication cost can be a significant factor when a patient is deciding whether or not to fill a prescription. Yet, research shows that patients often feel they do not have adequate information about the use of formularies or the drugs covered by their plan. In addition, when required, the manual prior authorization process to gain necessary approvals for a specific drug from both the insurer and prescriber can be time-consuming for prescribers, patients and pharmacists. In fact, approximately 80 percent of physicians said manual prior authorization requests require extra work, rework and follow up, which can also delay the start of an important therapy or result in poor compliance. Altogether, this can result in medication non-adherence, which can lead to poor health outcomes and is estimated to cost the U.S. health care system nearly $300 billion each year.

Real-time benefit information is enabled through functionality from Surescripts and is available to any provider using an electronic health record system enabled with real-time benefits and electronic prior authorization. Real-time benefits further build on CVS Health’s use of electronic health records, to support MinuteClinic nurse practitioners and CVS Specialty’s care management programs.

CVS Health to hire 5,000 new apprentices by 2022

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2017-Nov-15 — /EPR Retail News/ — In an ongoing commitment to workforce development, CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) today (November 14, 2017) announced it has set a goal of hiring 5,000 new apprentices by 2022. The newly established goal, which coincides with the U.S. Department of Labor’s National Apprenticeship Week, reflects an expansion of the company’s Registered Apprenticeship program to seven additional states, including Arizona, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania, bringing the total number of statewide apprenticeship programs supported by CVS Health to 18.

Registered Apprenticeships provide participants with structured training to maintain the high level of skills needed in complex fields such as pharmacy care and prescription benefit management, and equips participants with a nationally recognized credential that will help them advance in their careers.

“Apprenticeships help job creators fill open positions with skilled job seekers,” said U.S. Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta. “CVS Health’s goal to hire thousands more apprentices reflects the strength of the apprenticeship model. The Administration is pleased to see the creation of more opportunities for Americans to learn the skills they need to find family-sustaining jobs.”

CVS Health became the first employer to launch a U.S. Department of Labor Registered Apprenticeship program for pharmacy technicians in 2005. Through 2017, the company has had more than 4,700 colleagues join its Registered Apprenticeship career tracks for retail pharmacy, prescription benefit management and retail store management.

CVS Health is among a growing number of U.S. companies investing in earn-and-learn apprenticeship programs, due in part to the nation’s skills gap. Today, there are more than 6 million vacant jobs that American workers are unable to fill the highest level on record, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The BLS also reported in 2015 that the country is projected to produce one million fewer technical workers than is needed over the next decade.

“The widening skills gap in the U.S. is a significant business concern, and companies large and small are seeing this workplace strategy that combines on-the-job training with classroom instruction as a viable solution to build a pipeline of future skilled talent,” said Lisa Bisaccia, EVP and Chief Human Resources Officer for CVS Health.

As part of its apprenticeship strategy, CVS Health works with community organizations across the country to source a consistent pipeline of apprentices including federal, state and local government organizations, public workforce agencies, community colleges, community-based nonprofits and faith-based organizations to provide candidate referrals from untapped pools of talent.

“Meaningful work and a defined career track can provide a source of dignity, pride and identity, which participants are able to gain through our Registered Apprenticeship programs,” added Bisaccia.

The U.S. Department of Labor has designated November 13 – 19, 2017 as the third annual National Apprenticeship Week, a nationwide opportunity for companies, trade and industry groups, nonprofit organizations, unions, labor-management organizations, and educational institutions to highlight how apprenticeships prepare American workers for the jobs of today and the future.

CVS Health announces availability of opioid overdose-reversal medication naloxone without prescription at CVS Pharmacy locations in Michigan

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2017-Nov-10 — /EPR Retail News/ — CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) announced today (November 9, 2017) that the opioid overdose-reversal medication naloxone is now available without an individual prescription at all of the nearly 300 CVS Pharmacy locations in Michigan, including those located inside Target stores. CVS Pharmacists will be able to dispense naloxone to patients without an individual prescription under a statewide standing order protocol.

“Naloxone is a safe and effective antidote to opioid overdoses and by expanding access to this medication in our pharmacies in Michigan we can help save lives,” said Tom Davis, RPh, Vice President of Pharmacy Professional Services at CVS Pharmacy. “CVS Health is dedicated to helping the communities we serve address and prevent prescription drug abuse and we are expanding access to naloxone to give more people a chance to get the help they need for recovery.”

“Michigan families have lost too many loved ones to the opioid epidemic,” said U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow. “Naloxone is a critical life-saving drug for those who suffer from addiction and I applaud those working to make it more accessible.”

Today’s naloxone announcement builds on CVS Health’s commitment to helping communities address and prevent prescription drug abuse by focusing on prevention and safe medication disposal. In 2015, CVS Health launched a community outreach program called Pharmacists Teach, which brings CVS pharmacists to local schools to talk to students about the dangers of drug abuse. More than 300,000 students across the U.S. have already taken part in the program. High school teachers and administrators can learn more about bringing Pharmacists Teach to their school at www.CVSHealth.com.

CVS Health has also joined with the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids to create the Medication Disposal for Safer Communities Program, which has donated more than 800 units to police departments around the country, collecting more than 100 metric tons of unwanted medication. In September, CVS Health announced it would expand the program to 750 locations inside CVS Pharmacies by mid-2018, for a total of 1,550 safe medication disposal locations.

In that recent announcement, the company also said it would enhance opioid utilization management to align with the CDC Guideline for CVS Caremark PBM clients and members, complementing measures already in place. And, the CVS Health Foundation added a $2 million commitment to previous investments in mitigating prescription drug abuse with support for Community Health Centers providing medication-assisted treatment and other addiction recovery services.

With the addition of Michigan, CVS Pharmacy now dispenses naloxone to patients without an individual prescription in these 46 states: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Michigan, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

CVS Health encourages Florida residents to receive the Hepatitis A vaccine following increase in locally acquired Hepatitis A cases

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2017-Nov-04 — /EPR Retail News/ — CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) is encouraging unvaccinated Florida residents to receive the Hepatitis A vaccine, following the Florida Department of Health’s (DOH) announcement that the state has seen an increase in locally acquired Hepatitis A cases. MinuteClinic walk-in medical clinics in Florida currently have vaccine available and are able to administer the immunization to patients to protect against Hepatitis A. Many CVS Pharmacy locations have the vaccine available as well. According to the Florida DOH, there have been 34 cases of Hepatitis A infection reported in Broward County since January 2017. During a typical year, the Florida DOH usually receives reports of seven cases of Hepatitis A.

Vaccination is the most effective way to protect people from Hepatitis A and MinuteClinic and CVS Pharmacy are offering the Hepatitis A vaccine at select locations across the state. There are 101 MinuteClinic locations with 10 in Broward County, as well as 876 CVS Pharmacy locations in Florida with 76 in Broward County. Patients planning to go to MinuteClinic to get vaccinated for Hepatitis A can visit MinuteClinic.com to view wait times at nearby clinics. Consumers can visit CVS.com or use the CVS Pharmacy app to locate a nearby CVS Pharmacy and to schedule a Hepatitis A vaccination appointment. Patients are encouraged to contact their local pharmacy to confirm availability.

“Immunizations are an important part of preventive care and a critical way to prevent the spread of serious illness, like Hepatitis A,” said Tobias Barker, M.D., Chief Medical Officer of MinuteClinic. “Our MinuteClinic nurse practitioners and CVS Pharmacy pharmacists are able to provide vaccinations to Floridians who may have been exposed to the virus or who are unaware of their vaccination status. They can also help ensure that patients stay up to date on vaccinations in the future.”

Hepatitis A vaccine may provide protection against the disease if given within two weeks after exposure. People who have had Hepatitis A disease or previously received two doses of the Hepatitis A vaccine do not need to be immunized for Hepatitis A again. Symptoms of Hepatitis A infection usually appear two to six weeks after exposure and include fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, abdominal discomfort, dark urine, diarrhea, and yellow skin and eyes.

At MinuteClinic, the Hepatitis A vaccine can be provided to can be provided to adults and children 18 months and older. CVS pharmacists can provide the Hepatitis A vaccine to people ages 18 and up. It is administered in one primary dose and a second booster dose, usually administered 6 months later. Vaccine supplies will be replenished at these locations as needed. Patients should check with their insurance plans for coverage details prior to their MinuteClinic or CVS Pharmacy visit.

While vaccination provides the best protection from Hepatitis A, frequent hand-washing with soap and water after using the bathroom, changing a diaper, and before preparing food can help prevent the spread of the illness. Appropriately cooking foods can also help to prevent infection.

CVS Health hosts fourth annual in-store fundraising campaign to benefit Stand Up To Cancer

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2017-Nov-01 — /EPR Retail News/ — CVS Health [NYSE:CVS] today (October 30, 2017) announced its fourth yearly in-store fundraising campaign at CVS Pharmacy locations nationwide will occur October 29 November 19, to benefit Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) and its ongoing efforts to accelerate the pace of cancer research. CVS Health colleagues and customers have raised more than $15 million for Stand Up To Cancer since 2014.

Funds raised through November 19 will support cancer research programs that get new therapies to patients quickly and save lives now. CVS Pharmacy customers can support Stand Up To Cancer by making a $1, $3 or larger donation at the register or online at www.StandUpToCancer.org/CVSHealth.

“Just about everyone knows someone battling cancer and it affects our customers, colleagues, and communities every day,” said Helena Foulkes, Executive Vice President of CVS Health and President, CVS Pharmacy. “As a purpose-driven company dedicated to helping people on their path to better health, we’re proud to support Stand Up To Cancer as they accelerate groundbreaking research to help save more lives.”

This year’s campaign will be supported by in-store radio and marketing collateral with Stand Up To Cancer ambassador and Golden Globe-winning and Emmy-nominated actress Tracee Ellis Ross of Blackish. It will also include a new public service announcement produced in partnership with the comedy brand Funny Or Die. The PSA features an adolescent boy who humorously struggles to spend the dollar given to him by his grandfather, only to learn that his good fortune can be put to good use when he donates the dollar to SU2C at his local CVS Pharmacy.

“I am honored to help raise awareness and funds for Stand Up To Cancer through CVS Health’s fundraising campaign,” said Ross. “Cancer has touched so many of our lives, and I hope everyone will join me in helping make more cancer patients into survivors by donating in stores or online.”

Donations made during the campaign will support SU2C’s collaborative cancer research model which brings together scientists from different institutions and across multiple disciplines to work together to translate their research from the laboratory to the patient.

The critical funds raised by CVS Pharmacy customers over the past four years have helped SU2C to develop new effective treatments such as the immunotherapy CAR T therapy which was recently recommended for FDA approval for treatment of a type of pediatric leukemia, known as acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). This first success could lead to similar treatments for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and other cancers. SU2C was an early — and major — funder of immunotherapy research and these investments, thanks in part to CVS Pharmacy and their customers, are contributing significantly to advancements in the field of immunotherapy. In addition to the strides in immunotherapy, SU2C has supported developments of treatments that received an FDA “breakthrough therapy” designation for advanced breast cancer as well as an FDA approval for pancreatic cancer.

“Because of CVS Health’s commitment to Stand Up To Cancer, we’re able to make progress in increasing treatment options for patients and making advancements in the fight against cancer,” said Stand Up To Cancer Co-Founder Sue Schwartz. “We’re are inspired by CVS Health’s dedication to the health of their customers and are grateful to CVS Health and their customers for helping SU2C achieve our mission of making everyone diagnosed with cancer a survivor.”

Additionally, to increase awareness of the critical work being done by SU2C, customers can participate in the Value of a Dollar challenge for a chance to win the Ultimate Hollywood Experience. When visiting at CVS Pharmacy between October 29 and November 19, take a selfie and post on your Instagram and/or Twitter with the hashtag #ValueOfADollar and #Promotion to be entered into the sweepstakes* for a chance to win a trip for two to attend the red carpet world premiere of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (in theaters December 20) and a tour of Sony Pictures Studios.

CVS Pharmacy has also teamed up with Hallmark this year to debut two new exclusive card collections in-store aimed at supporting hope, health and happiness Stand Up To Cancer and Laugh for the Health of it, which are available in locations nationwide.

CVS Health and Northside Center to expand mental health clinics in public and charter schools across New York City

CVS Health and Northside Center to expand mental health clinics in public and charter schools across New York City

NEW YORK, 2017-Oct-26 — /EPR Retail News/ — Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, New York City Councilperson Corey Johnson and Northside Center for Child Development, today (Oct. 25, 2017) announced a new partnership with CVS Health to expand mental health clinics in public and charter schools across New York City. With a $200,000 corporate grant from CVS Health, the new partnership announced at P.S. 161 in Harlem one of several schools where the Northside Center operates satellite mental health clinics licensed by the Office of Mental Health will infuse $50,000 annually to expand the mental health clinics’ footprint and serve more children in New York Cityover the next four years.

Since 2010, Northside Center has operated mental health clinics in Harlem and the Bronx, currently serving over 300 students in 11 schools. By bringing these clinics directly into school environments, it allows Northside to meet students where they are, and more effectively serve children with a variety of emotional and mental health issues.

“We are incredibly grateful to partner with, and have the support of, an organization like CVS Health, who has made it their mission to provide individuals with the resources, access to treatment, and medicine they need,” said Dr. Thelma Dye, Hilde L. Mosse Executive Director and CEO of Northside Center. “This partnership and funding allows us to continue to sustain and expand our mental health satellite clinics in New York City schools, giving us the opportunity to provide counseling and therapy for children from underserved communities, who may otherwise not get the treatment they need.”

The partnership will help build upon Northside Center’s demonstrated record of success in improving mental health and academic outcomes for children living in the city’s most underserved communities. To date, the program has successfully reduced “no-show” rates to therapy sessions from 30 percent to less than 10 percent.

“Northside Center’s historic commitment to New York City’s children is unparalleled, and we are proud to support their life changing work,” said David M. Denton, Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer, for CVS Health. “These clinics serve students who need the most help, but often have the least access to critical mental health services. We look forward to continuing to work with Northside Center and city officials to expand quality and affordable health care so more children living in poverty can lead healthy and fulfilling lives.”

Northside currently operates 11 mental health clinics in public and charter schools in Harlem and the Bronx.

Northside Center and CVS Health most recently partnered in May 2016 to host a health fair in East Harlem, which featured information from community health providers, free health screenings and services, along with gift giveaways.

About the Northside Center

Northside Center for Child Development is a non-profit organization that provides early childhood education, behavioral health, and enrichment services to low-income children and families across the New York City for over 70 years. Northside was founded by pioneering psychologists Drs. Kenneth B. and Mamie Clark. The Clarks’ groundbreaking research, including the black-white doll studies, were critical to the 1954 Brown vs. Board of Education Supreme Court decision, which legally ended the segregation of public schools. Today, Northside Center provides children and families the support they need to overcome adversity and thrive. CVS Health expands its safe medication disposal program to include locations inside CVS Pharmacy stores

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2017-Oct-26 — /EPR Retail News/ — Today (October 25, 2017), CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) officially introduced the expansion of the company’s safe medication disposal program to include locations inside CVS Pharmacy stores, marking the Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, October 28. The new safe medication disposal kiosks inside 750 CVS Pharmacy locations will add to the more than 800 units CVS Health has donated to law enforcement officials across the country, which have collected more than 100 metric tons of unwanted medication. Properly disposing of unused medications can reduce the risk of misuse, abuse or diversion.

“Solving the opioid crisis will not be easy and it will take the concerted effort of patients, providers, payors, pharmacies, advocacy organizations, elected officials and community leaders,” said Thomas M. Moriarty, Executive Vice President, Chief Policy and External Affairs Officer, and General Counsel, CVS Health. “Our safe medication disposal program is just one of the many initiatives we have undertaken to help prevent opioid abuse and drug addiction in our communities.”

CVS Health is unveiling its first disposal units inside CVS Pharmacy locations in Wilmington, North Carolina and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania this week.

“The opioid crisis is tearing apart families all over North Carolina and this nation,” said Attorney General Josh Stein of North Carolina. “Safely disposing of unneeded medications is an important and simple step we can all take to keep these drugs out of the wrong hands. I applaud and thank CVS for making it easier for us to get rid of these dangerous and highly addictive drugs.”

“Eighty percent of heroin users start with a legal prescription drug,” Attorney General Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania said. “We appreciate this effort to end diversion of these highly addictive drugs.”

Together with law enforcement, CVS Health also continues to underscore the importance of proper medication disposal this week at the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office in Savannah, Georgia, which has received two medication disposal units from CVS Health.

“The opioid epidemic is one of the greatest public health threats facing our country, one that took the lives of 982 Georgians just last year,” said Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr. “It affects every state and has a devastating impact on our communities tearing apart families and stretching the budgets of local law enforcement and first responders as they do the difficult work on the front lines. CVS Health is continuing to find innovative ways to help in this fight, and we are very grateful to have them as a partner in our Drug Take Back efforts in Georgia.”

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications. Nearly 100 CVS Pharmacy locations will be among the many sites across the country where law enforcement will hold a one-day event to collect unwanted prescription medication. Patients can find a participating medication return location using this location finder tool.

CVS Health is also working to address and prevent prescription drug abuse by increasing access to the opioid-overdose reversal medication naloxone in 43 states. Additionally, through the company’s Pharmacists Teach program, CVS pharmacists have volunteered to educate more than 300,000 students about the dangers of prescription drug abuse.

In September, CVS Health announced an expansion of its enterprise initiatives to fight the opioid abuse epidemic by limiting to seven days the supply of opioids dispensed for certain acute prescriptions for patients who are new to therapy; limiting the daily dosage of opioids dispensed based on the strength of the opioid; and requiring use of immediate-release formulations of opioids before extended release opioids are dispensed.

CVS Health announces new performance-based pharmacy network for CVS Caremark pharmacy benefit management clients and their members

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2017-Oct-26 — /EPR Retail News/ — CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) today (October 24, 2017) announced a new 30,000-store performance-based pharmacy network anchored by CVS Pharmacy and Walgreens, along with up to 10,000 community-based independently owned pharmacies across the United States. The network is designed not only to deliver unit cost savings, but also to improve clinical outcomes that will lead to lower overall health care costs for CVS Caremark pharmacy benefit management (PBM) clients and their members.

“Steadily increasing drug costs, and the current transition in health care from volume to value, require us to continually develop and implement innovative solutions to help our clients manage pharmacy costs while improving health outcomes,” said Jon Roberts, Chief Operating Officer of CVS Health. “This partnership with Walgreens, CVS Pharmacy and independent pharmacies enables us to offer a new kind of pharmacy network that provides our clients with opportunities to improve health outcomes and lower overall health care costs, along with comprehensive, nationwide access to medications for their patients.”

Performance measures for participating pharmacies will include demonstrated medication adherence for chronic conditions that are impactful to client costs (e.g., hypertension, diabetes, respiratory conditions and behavioral health). Participating pharmacies are encouraged to implement their own proprietary programs and workflow processes to enable them to deliver results related to the measures being tracked.

“Walgreens is pleased to advance our commitment to improving patient care and health outcomes through improved medication adherence by participating in this new performance pharmacy network,” said Alex Gourlay, Co-Chief Operating Officer of Walgreens Boots Alliance and President of Walgreens. “This network recognizes that pharmacists do more than dispense medications they are key members of the patient care teams and add value by helping and encouraging patients to take their medications as instructed, improving overall health and wellness while lowering costs for patients and payers. Tracking performance provides additional accountability and incentive to achieve measurable outcomes.”

“At CVS Pharmacy we know pharmacists play an important role in providing our patients with timely and relevant information about their prescription medications,” said Helena Foulkes, President, CVS Pharmacy. “Given that our pharmacists are on the frontlines of health care in their role as a trusted health care provider, their interventions can help patients take their medications as directed by their physicians, ultimately improving outcomes and managing overall health care costs.”

CVS Caremark will make this network available to eligible PBM clients for implementation beginning March 2018.

As part of the agreement, CVS Caremark will manage certain services for IngenioRx, including claims processing and prescription fulfillment. In addition, CVS Health’s bundled suite of assets, including CVS Pharmacy and MinuteClinic, allow the company to apply its expertise in patient messaging and engagement at the point-of-sale to support IngenioRx, broadening the scope of clinical services offered at the pharmacy counter to drive better outcomes. The new agreement, which goes into effect on January 1, 2020, runs through December 31, 2024.

CVS Health and Epic announce initiative to help lower drug costs for patients

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2017-Oct-17 — /EPR Retail News/ — CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) and Epic today (October 16, 2017) announced a strategic initiative to help lower drug costs for patients and improve outcomes by providing prescribers with expanded visibility to lower cost alternatives through enhanced analytics and data sharing. CVS Health will use Epic’s Healthy Planet population health and analytics platform to generate insights surrounding dispensing patterns and behaviors around medication adherence.

The collaboration will bolster prescription decision-making for patients and their care teams, including physicians, pharmacists and health insurers. Real-time benefit information and facilitated, point-of-prescribing electronic prior authorization will help improve and simplify patient access to necessary medications and ensure their prescribers are aware of prescription insurance formulary status and less expensive alternatives as appropriate.

“This collaboration with Epic will enable us to continue to drive leading edge technology innovation beyond the pharmacy to the full health care system,” said Stephen Gold, Chief Information Officer, CVS Health. “Together, our two companies will also examine opportunities to streamline and improve data sharing and linkages across the health care system to enhance communication and connectivity among patients, their physicians, the pharmacy and health insurers.”

“At CVS Health we recognize that EHRs offer health care providers easier and more comprehensive access to their patients’ information than ever before,” said Troyen A. Brennan, M.D., Chief Medical Officer, CVS Health. “This new relationship will help us further expand how we work with Epic and providers on their EHR system to develop meaningful tools and programs that will ultimately help us take even better care of the patients we support.”

CVS Health currently works with Epic, the most widely used EHR, to support the company’s MinuteClinic nurse practitioners and CVS Specialty’s care management programs.

Through this new strategic relationship CVS Health and Epic will explore a number of new areas including:

  • Prescription Drug Savings: Collaboration around real-time benefit information and facilitated, point-of-prescribing electronic prior authorization to help inform patients and prescribers in real time about covered drugs that are clinically effective and available at the lowest out-of-pocket cost for the patient;
  • Improved Prescribing Decisions: Development of a comprehensive clinical database to enhance medication counseling and help optimize medication selection for CVS Health patients;
  • Shared Care Plan for Pharmacists: Improve pharmacist access to clinical information and allow contribution to the care plan to improve continuity of care;
  • Digital Front Store Capabilities: Creation of a digital front store to enable inclusion of purchases of over-the-counter medications and durable medical equipment into the patient’s electronic health record.

“CVS Health is one of the leaders in using data to dissolve domain silos, while offering new sources of intelligence and expertise that can better inform care delivery, reduce administrative overhead, and lower costs for patients,” said Alan Hutchison, Epic Vice President of Population Health.

“Working in collaboration with CVS Health allows for enhanced and efficient data integration and decision support for clinicians while relieving administrative burden,” said Gregory Rosencrance, M.D., chairman of Cleveland Clinic Medicine Institute. “These promising advances put the patient at the center of care while improving the cost and quality of care they receive.” CVS Health is a member of Cleveland Clinic’s clinically integrated network and Quality Alliance.

CVS Health celebrates its 30,000 pharmacists this month of October

WOONSOCKET, RI, 2017-Oct-17 — /EPR Retail News/ — CVS Health (NYSE:CVS) is celebrating its 30,000 pharmacists as part of American Pharmacists Month, an annual observation held every October. The company’s pharmacy teams are playing an increasingly important role in helping people on their path to better health by improving access to care and lowering costs for the millions of patients they serve every day.

“As our nation’s health care landscape changes, our pharmacists are being called upon to play a broader role in a patient’s overall health care team,” said Larry J. Merlo, President and Chief Executive Officer, CVS Health. “Pharmacists not only provide one-on-one trusted counsel to patients each and every day, they are also delivering vital health care services, such as providing immunizations, and offering medication reviews to ensure patients are getting the most out of their entire medication regimen.”

As medication experts, CVS Health pharmacists are helping identify potential barriers to medication adherence and offering solutions to help encourage patients to stay adherent. They also work in a variety of settings beyond the counter at CVS Pharmacy.

“Our pharmacists are not only the familiar faces you see behind the counter at your local CVS Pharmacy,” added Merlo. “Whether through Omnicare, CVS Caremark, CVS Specialty or Coram, our pharmacists are providing expert clinical care to patients with a wide range of medication regimens, from simple to complex.”

CVS Pharmacy recently rolled out a new prescription management system, called ScriptPath, which will help its pharmacy team provide even more guidance to patients through an innovative and first-of-its-kind Prescription Schedule. The Prescription Schedule enables the pharmacist to recommend a consolidated dosing schedule – narrowed down to four dosing times a day – which will do even more to improve patient understanding and medication adherence which can lead to better health outcomes.

In addition, pharmacists are providing convenient and accessible access to flu shots and other vaccinations at every CVS Pharmacy location nationwide seven days a week with no appointment needed, including evenings and weekends. In some states, such as California and Oregon, pharmacists are able to prescribe hormonal contraceptives, giving patients greater access to care at times and locations that are convenient for them.

CVS pharmacists also provide telephonic medication adherence and clinical support to CVS Caremark pharmacy benefit management (PBM) members and CVS Specialty patients. They review and check all medications that are submitted for mail delivery and also provide counseling and support to members through programs such as Pharmacy Advisor, which help improve medication adherence and outcomes for patients with chronic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

CVS pharmacists are also working to reduce prescription drug abuse through the company’s Pharmacists Teach program. This community outreach program connects pharmacists with high school students to share vital information about the dangers of improper drug use. Thousands of CVS pharmacists have volunteered their time to deliver this program to more than 295,000 students across the country, at no cost to the school, and the company has begun expanding the program to a parent audience.

CVS Health will celebrate National Pharmacy Technician Day on October 17 to recognize the company’s more than 50,000 pharmacy technicians for the valued support they provide to CVS pharmacists and pharmacy teams across the organization.

CVS Health in-store fundraising campaign raised $4 million for recovery efforts in Florida, Texas and Puerto Rico

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2017-Oct-05 — /EPR Retail News/ — CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) today (October 4, 2017) announced that its customers and colleagues donated nearly $4 million to support the Florida, Texas and Puerto Rico communities that were devastated by recent hurricanes, during a 10-day in-store fundraising campaign. The company also announced that it will donate more than $6 million of critical products and supplies to these communities, bringing CVS Health’s total support to $10 million.

The funds will be split evenly between Unidos por Puerto Rico, Rebuild Texas Fund and the Florida Disaster Fund to help support rebuilding efforts in these affected communities over the coming weeks and months. Products will be distributed to communities where they are needed the most.

“We are incredibly grateful to our colleagues and customers who have demonstrated our values of caring and integrity over the past few weeks during these historic storms,” said Helena B. Foulkes, executive vice president, CVS Health and president, CVS Pharmacy. “The rebuilding process for many of these communities will take a long time, and we will continue to do our part by providing support during this difficult time.”

To ensure patients and customers received the medications and information they needed during the recent hurricanes, CVS Health mobilized an enterprise-wide effort to help with preparations and accommodations prior to and after the storms.

The company’s proprietary messaging platform enabled rapid and urgent communications to patients who were in the path of hurricanes. Text messages were sent to tens of thousands of patients, reminding them to plan ahead for any potential disruption from the storm. The messages also helped ensure delivery of specialty and other medications for patients in transition between home and safe shelter locations.

Additionally, the catastrophic impact and wide-spread power outages in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria posed particular challenges in coordinating resources for colleagues, customers and patients. In response, CVS Health transported much-needed specialty medications and essential equipment to support store operations in Puerto Rico and, in some cases, delivered medication directly to individual patients who were in need.

“While it is never easy to manage through storms of this magnitude, hundreds of our colleagues have gone above and beyond to ensure that our patients, customers and communities are being served, despite the devastation impacting their own personal lives,” added Eileen Howard Boone, president of the CVS Health Charitable Foundation. “Their generosity, compassion and dedication to serving others whether it be patients, residents or co-workers is truly amazing.”

In addition to the funds raised through the in-store campaign, CVS Health and the CVS Health Foundation, colleagues and customers had previously donated nearly $800,000 in cash and in-kind product donations to the American Red Cross, Direct Relief, Salvation Army, Florida Disaster Fund, Unidos por Puerto Rico, Rebuild Texas Fund, the Greater Houston Community Foundation and the CVS Health Employee Relief Fund, a public charity designed to help CVS Health employees during unanticipated and unavoidable financial hardships and emergencies.

CVS Pharmacy launches annual free health screening campaign — Project Health

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2017-Sep-08 — /EPR Retail News/ — In its continuing commitment to improve access to affordable health care for all Americans, CVS Pharmacy, the retail division of CVS Health (NYSE: CVS), announced the launch of Project Health, the company’s annual free health screening campaign. Over the next four months, 450 Project Health wellness events will deliver more than $5 million worth of free health services in select CVS Pharmacy locations across 10 multicultural communities with a large number of uninsured or underinsured Americans.

“Project Health is part of CVS Health’s commitment to improve access to health care and ensure that cost isn’t a barrier to important preventive services,” said Troyen A. Brennan, M.D., chief medical officer of CVS Health. “Our free health screenings can help identify health concerns or risk factors for participants who may not have access to care otherwise.”

Project Health events, which are held from September 7 through December 17, are open to everyone and do not require an appointment. Current CVS Pharmacy locations for the events include: Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, Detroit, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., and select CVS Pharmacy stores in Puerto Rico.

Given the catastrophic flooding and ongoing recovery efforts in Houston, all Project Health events in the area are being postponed. CVS Health is committed to rescheduling these free health and wellness events to the residents of Houston when it is safe to do so and when the community will have greater access to these much needed services.

Project Health offers an array of free comprehensive health assessment screenings, including blood pressure, Body Mass Index (BMI), glucose and total cholesterol screenings, which can help detect risk for chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. Today, 1 in 2 Americans has at least one chronic illness with 85 percent of our health care dollars spent each year caring for Americans with these diseases.1

“These chronic conditions, which can often be life-threatening, can be treated very effectively when identified early, helping to improve a patient’s health and well-being, as well as reducing costs for both the patient and the overall health care delivery system,” added Brennan.

Once screened, patients have access to on-site consultations with bilingual nurse practitioners or physician assistants who will analyze results and refer patients who require additional medical care and follow up to no-cost or low-cost medical facilities nearby or to their primary care physician.

Since it was established in 2006, Project Health has delivered more than $117 millionin free health care services to more than 887,000 people, many of whom lack access to preventive care. Last year, high rates of specific treatable conditions among Project Health participants were detected, including:

  • 49 percent were found to be overweight or obese
  • 39 percent had abnormal blood pressure readings
  • 31 percent had abnormal glucose readings
  • 38 percent were found to have abnormal cholesterol levels

CVS Health will be partnering with YMCAs in HoustonAtlanta and Los Angeles this year to encourage their members to participate in Project Health screenings in these markets.

“As a leading community-based organization dedicated to improving the nation’s health, the Y shares CVS Health’s goal to deliver preventive care, like screenings, in places where access is a barrier,” said Kevin Washington, President and CEO, YMCA of the USA. “Taking health care out of clinical settings and putting it into our neighborhoods can save lives, reduce costs and make our communities stronger.”

Project Health events will be held from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at select CVS Pharmacy locations. For a full calendar of Project Health events, visit www.cvs.com/projecthealth (in Spanish: www.cvs.com/proyectosalud).

CVS Health and the CVS Health Foundation donates $200,000 to support Hurricane Harvey relief efforts

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2017-Aug-29 — /EPR Retail News/ — CVS Health and the CVS Health Foundation today (August 28, 2017) announced $200,000 in cash and in-kind product donations to organizations helping with relief efforts for those affected by Hurricane Harvey.

Following widespread damage to communities across the coast of Texas, federal officials are anticipating the storm will drive 30,000 people into shelters and spur 450,000 victims to seek some sort of disaster assistance. In response, the CVS Health Foundation has donated $50,000 each to the Greater Houston Community Foundation and the American Red Cross, as well as $25,000 to Salvation Army, to aid the greater Houston area in supporting local residents as they begin the recovery and rebuilding process. CVS Health colleagues are invited to make a donation amount of their choosing, which will be matched by the CVS Health Foundation, up to $25,000.

CVS Pharmacy is continuing to identify how Hurricane Harvey has impacted over 200 locations in the greater Houston region. The company’s mobile pharmacies will be moved into the area once it is safe to do so. Customers will be able to pick up their prescriptions, purchase over-the-counter medications and receive recommended vaccines.

“We want to offer any assistance we can to our customers, colleagues and communities affected by this disaster,” said Eileen Howard Boone, SVP of Corporate Social Responsibility and Philanthropy at CVS Health, and President of the CVS Health Foundation. “Both CVS Health and the CVS Health Foundation are committed to ensuring that residents hit hard by this disaster have continued access to critical pharmacy care and the non-profit partners, first responders, and government agencies leading the relief efforts on the ground have the critical supplies and financial support they need to help those most in need.”

In addition, CVS Health will also donate $25,000 worth of in-kind products including personal hygiene, clean-up and over-the-counter items. The CVS Health Employee Relief Fund is prepared to provide support to colleagues who have been affected by the disaster.

CVS Caremark, the pharmacy benefit management division of CVS Health, is able to provide one-time emergency refills of a 10-day supply of medication for plan members in impacted areas at local pharmacies.

CVS Health has a long history of providing aid in times of disasters, helping communities prepare and recover by donating emergency supplies, such as food and water, home and personal products.
