New survey reveal an estimated 164 million people plan to shop during Thanksgiving weekend and Cyber Monday

WASHINGTON, 2017-Nov-15 — /EPR Retail News/ — The biggest shopping weekend of the year is right around the corner and 69 percent of Americans — an estimated 164 million people — are planning to shop or considering shopping during Thanksgiving weekend, according to the annual survey released today by the National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights & Analytics. For the first time in survey history, the numbers include Cyber Monday in addition to Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Sunday.

“This year, we updated our survey to more accurately capture consumer behavior throughout the entire shopping weekend — Thanksgiving Day through Cyber Monday,” NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay said. “Consumers will benefit from competitive promotions both in stores and online lasting the course of the weekend, allowing them to find the best gifts at the lowest prices.”

Of those considering shopping the long holiday weekend, the survey found that 20 percent plan to shop on Thanksgiving Day (32 million) but Black Friday will remain the busiest day with 70 percent planning to shop then (115 million). A substantial 43 percent are expected to shop on Saturday (71 million), with 76 percent saying they will do so specifically to support Small Business Saturday. On Sunday, 21 percent expect to shop (35 million) and 48 percent are expected to shop on Cyber Monday (78 million).

Of those shopping, 66 percent said they’re doing so to take advantage of deals and promotions retailers will offer, while 26 percent cited the tradition of shopping over Thanksgiving weekend and 23 percent said it’s something to do over the holiday weekend. Another 23 percent said it is when they start their holiday shopping.

According to the survey, 56 percent of Americans have already started their holiday shopping, but most still have a long way to go. Only 12 percent of consumers have completed at least half of their shopping, while only 2 percent have finished all of their holiday shopping.

When asked what they enjoy the most about shopping during the holidays, 35 percent said it is a family tradition while 23 percent said they most enjoy holiday decorations and displays; 18 percent cited finding the perfect gift for someone.

“While the utility of the weekend will continue to draw shoppers into stores and online to efficiently and inexpensively check off their lists, we’re also seeing consumers report tradition and the opportunity to partake in holiday cheer as reasons for shopping, too,” Prosper Principal Analyst Pam Goodfellow said. “By now, people know what sort of deals they can expect to see during the weekend and are budgeting for them accordingly, and in many cases expertly.”

“For Gen Z, the holiday shopping weekend is a can’t-miss opportunity,” Goodfellow said. “This group overwhelmingly sees in-store shopping as a valuable way to connect with others, be it friends, family or store associates at their favorite retailers.”

While many consumers will take advantage of deals over Thanksgiving weekend, 31 percent will refrain from shopping that weekend. Of those not planning to participate, 52 percent won’t shop because they do not enjoy the experience and 51 percent say they never shop during Thanksgiving weekend. Of those not shopping, 46 percent said nothing would change their mind but 27 percent said a good sale or discount on an item they want could get them to shop.

The survey, which asked 7,439 consumers about their shopping plans, was conducted October 31-November 7 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 1.2 percentage points.

Full data results surrounding the survey will not be published on NRF.com. News media and analysts who require additional information can contact press@nrf.com. Due to the changes in the survey, no historical data will be provided.

Argos kicks off Black Friday bonanza Wednesday 15 November through Cyber Monday

Argos kicks off Black Friday bonanza Wednesday 15 November through Cyber Monday

Argos’s eagerly anticipated Black Friday bonanza will kick-off tomorrow – Wednesday 15 November – and run for 14 consecutive days through to Cyber Monday.

London, 2017-Nov-15 — /EPR Retail News/ — The leading digital retailer will once again offer deals galore on thousands of products from top brands including Dyson, Phillips, Samsung, Xbox, PS4 and Lenovo across the whole period.
Whilst the deals remain a closely-guarded secret, there will be sizable discounts available on over 60,000 products across a range of toys, homewares and electricals.

Falling on 24 November, Black Friday – the most popular day in the shopping calendar – marks the start of the festive shopping season for customers, with many also taking advantage of the opportunity for self-gifting, adopting a ‘one for you, one for me’ state of mind.

Cyber Monday (27 November) also continues to be an important day for online shopping and falls around pay day for many people this year.

Argos expects Black Friday to be dominated by digital platforms again this year, after its website received more than 12 million visits in less than 24 hours during 2016.  Customers made a staggering 18 transactions a second at peak times during the day and 75 per cent of all visits were from mobile and tablet devices.

Free Fast Track store collection more than doubled year-on-year in 2016. Across the four days of the Black Friday weekend, Argos delivered 263,000 products to 146,000 customers through Fast Track delivery.

John Rogers, Argos CEO, said: “Last year’s Black Friday was the biggest and most successful shopping day ever for Argos, with the first hours seeing the largest amount of online traffic in our history.

“We have been busy preparing for the Black Friday period for many months now, ensuring our digital channels, stores and distribution centres are all geared up in anticipation for high levels of demand for what we expect to be fantastic deals across must-have products.

“Black Friday and Cyber Monday have definitely changed how people shop for Christmas, with many using it for the initial burst of gift buying in the festive season, whether they choose to shop in store, online, or by mobile.”

Last year savvy shoppers were ready to snap up bargains as soon as deals went live at midnight – with half a million visits to Argos’s digital channels between midnight and 1am, equating to 8,000 visits per minute.

Tech and gaming fans were early birds, with 57 per cent of all deals purchased between 12am – 4.30am being video games consoles, games and tablets.

The biggest hour was 9-10am with 720,000 visits to the Argos website, equating to 12,000 visits a minute and 18 orders per second.

Argos has more than 800 stores across the UK and Republic of Ireland, which includes approximately 150 Argos stores within Sainsbury’s supermarkets, with 165 planned by Christmas 2017, and around 200 digital collection points in Sainsbury’s stores.”

Argos has recruited an additional 10,000 seasonal workers to help serve millions of customers in its stores over the festive period. On Black Friday itself, they will be joined by hundreds of head office workers helping out on the shop floor.

To get the deals and top products out to stores and customers’ homes, Argos’s 11 distribution centres covering more than five million square feet of floor space will have around 5,000 warehouse workers, supported by 3,000 Fast Track drivers, using 950 delivery vans based at local stores.

Argos’s Fast Track delivery service offers customers same-day home delivery in as little as four hours for just £3.95 and covers more than 90 per cent of the country.

On Black Friday, same-day Fast Track delivery slots will be offered to customers on a first-come, first-served basis with subsequent days’ slots offered once Black Friday’s delivery schedules are full.

NRF: 122 million Americans plan to shop online on Cyber Monday, up from 121 million who planned to participate last year

WASHINGTON, 2016-Nov-28 — /EPR Retail News/ — Early season online deals captured consumers’ attention this year, allowing many to shop online ahead of Cyber Monday. According to the National Retail Federation’s Cyber Monday Expectations Survey conducted by Prosper Insights & Analytics over the weekend, 122 million Americans plan to shop online on Cyber Monday, up from the 121 million who planned to participate last year.

“On Cyber Monday, retailers deliver online discounts unlike any other day of the year—driving consumers to shop online no matter where they are or what device they’re shopping from,” NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay said. “Millions of consumers shopped over Thanksgiving weekend and reserved a portion of their budgets exclusively for Cyber Monday, knowing that there will be digital deals that are too good to pass up.”

More than 28 million people, or 23 percent of Cyber Monday shoppers, plan to shop for Cyber Monday deals from their mobile device this year, about even with last year’s 29.6 million. More than eight in 10— 98.6 million people, will use their computers at home to shop on Monday, while 11.2 million will shop from their computers at work.

On Cyber Monday, retailers offer deals around the clock and consumers know to check-in with their favorite retailers early and often to find the deals they’re looking for. Early morning remains the busiest time for online shopping—38.9 percent of those shopping on Cyber Monday will shop first thing in the morning, while 33.9 percent will shop late in the morning, 16 percent will shop over lunch and 31 percent will shop in the early afternoon.

“Shopping online is more convenient than ever before—while travelling, emailing or relaxing at home, we’re seeing consumers of all ages researching and shopping for online deals,” said Prosper’s Principal Analyst Pam Goodfellow. “Cyber Monday deals have become something that smart shoppers rely on, and this year is no different. Consumers wake up early ready to shop at their favorite retailers for the items they’ve had their eye on all season.”

Argos predicts UK mobile shopping frenzy this year with more visits than ever to its website and apps on ‘Cyber Monday’

Milton Keynes, UK, 2014-11-28 — /EPR Retail News/ — As one of the biggest shopping weekends of 2014 approaches, leading online retailer Argos is predicting a UK mobile shopping frenzy this year with more visits than ever to its website and apps on ‘Cyber Monday’ coming from shoppers using smartphones and tablets.

With Christmas shopping kick-starting on ‘Black Friday’ 28 November, as customers seek bargains galore from the abundance of special deals this year, Argos is expecting online traffic to reach a peak on ‘Cyber Monday’ 1 December 2014.  It is predicting more than five million visits to its websites and apps on the day, more than half of which will come from customers using mobile devices, at a rate of around 3,000 visits per minute as customers increasingly want to shop while on-the-go.

On Cyber Monday last year (2 December 2013) Argos saw over 3.6 million visits across argos.co.uk, its mobile site and apps.  Online visits peaked between 11am-12pm, and again in the evening between 9pm-10pm.

This year an increasing number of shoppers are turning to Argos’ mobile apps to Check & Reserve orders where items can be reserved for immediate collection from store.

In line with this, the number of Argos app downloads – currently at around 10 million– is expected to increase over Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

In the spirit of its new advertising campaign, Argos is encouraging customers to GET SET for Black Friday with a special countdown clock on argos.co.uk to help build excitement for the great offers and outstanding deals they can expect all weekend across technology, toys, TV ranges and more.

David Robinson, Chief Operating Officer at Argos, said: “Customer shopping habits are changing fast and more and more are wanting the convenience of shopping on-the-go or in front of the TV in the evening.   Making mobile shopping easy has been our priority this year, and we’ve just launched our first ever Argos Collect Store at Cannon Street Underground Station for busy commuters to collect their orders on-the-go. We’ve also brought gift inspiration into the 21st century with some great new Christmas apps for smartphones and tablets.”

Argos’ 11 enormous distribution centres covering a total of 5.4 million square feet of floor space will have 6,100 warehouse workers and 1,000 delivery drivers helping to dispatch millions of gifts over Cyber Monday and beyond, including high-demand products such as wearable technology, video games, DisneyFrozentoys, Lego, hair care like the BaByliss Curl Secret, and Beats headphones, out to stores and homes on a fleet of 975 lorries and vans.

David Robinson continued: “The race to get top gifts such as smart watches, DisneyFrozentoys and video games into customers’ hands quickly will be more intense than ever and our huge distribution operation is already gearing up.  For the first time ever, 150 of our larger stores will act as mini distribution centres by supplying products to smaller stores nearby, so customers can get fast access to 20,000 products within hours wherever they are.”

According to the Adobe Digital Index, shoppers are expected to spend around £281 million this Cyber Monday, contributing to a 14 per cent growth of online Christmas sales year-on-year.

Argos.co.uk and its mobile site and apps received around 738 million visits in the last financial year making Argos the UK’s largest high street retailer online.  43 per cent of all Argos sales are online, with sales through mobile devices now representing 22 per cent of total sales[1].

[1] Home Retail Group half year results, 22 October 2014.

This year, children can create their own digital Wishlist for Santa using the new Argos Wishlist app. Aimed at three to seven year-olds, the app enables children to choose their top gifts on a phone or tablet with help from animated characters. The Argos Gift Finder app offers tailored gifting suggestions for friends and family. Both apps are available for free from the App Store and Google Play store.

Argos has also added a fun twist to Christmas shopping this year by creating its very own Facebook game ‘Friend or Fraud’ where users invite their friends to guess what is on their wish list. Customers with smartphones can also use the Argos app to access videos, games and competitions from Argos’ traditional paper gift guide, available in store now.

One of Argos’ biggest distribution centres, Barton in Burton upon Trent, has 650,000 sq ft of floor space – equivalent to eight Wembley-sized football pitches – and typically dispatches 44 million items every year.  This Christmas Barton’s 900-strong team of workers are expecting to dispatch over 300,000 items and by the end of the year will have sent out enough iPads to create 22 million gigabytes of memory – that’s enough to store roughly 4.4 billion songs and is half the capacity of the new Titan super computer in America.

About Argos
Argos is a leading UK digital retailer, offering around 43,000 products through www.argos.co.uk, its growing mobile channels, stores and over the telephone.

Argos continues to be the UK’s largest high street retailer online with around 123m customer transactions a year through its stores and 738 million website and app visits in the 12 months to February 2014.  Customers can take advantage of Argos’ convenient Check & Reserve service available through its network of 734 stores across the UK and Republic of Ireland.

In the financial year to February 2014, Argos sales were £4.1 billion and it employed some 29,000 people across the business.

Argos is part of Home Retail Group, the UK’s leading home and general merchandise retailer.
