Macy’s declares Friday, Dec. 8 as National Believe Day; doubles its donation to Make-A-Wish and Wishes Across America

Macy’s declares Friday, Dec. 8 as National Believe Day; doubles its donation to Make-A-Wish and Wishes Across America

NEW YORK, 2017-Dec-07 — /EPR Retail News/ — As part of its 10th annual Believe campaign, Macy’s has declared this Friday, Dec. 8, National Believe Day – a day focused on spreading the beloved holiday program’s message of generosity and hope. Throughout the Believe campaign, Macy’s collects customers’ letters to Santa in-store and online at macys.com/believe. For each letter submitted from Nov. 3 through Dec. 24, Macy’s has pledged to donate $1, up to $1 million, to Make-A-Wish® to help grant the wishes of children with critical illnesses. In celebration of the ninth annual National Believe Day, Macy’s will again double its donation to Make-A-Wish, providing an additional $1per letter, up to an extra $1 million, above the existing $1 million campaign goal. Additionally, this week Macy’s will help grant special wishes for children in cities from coast-to-coast as part of Wishes Across America.

“Each National Believe Day, we are awed by the outpouring of support from our customers who submit their Santa letters to help Macy’s double its donation to Make-A-Wish,” said Holly Thomas, group vice president of Cause Marketing for Macy’s. “We are also especially thankful to our employees, partners at Make-A-Wish and community members nationwide who spend countless hours planning and granting special Wishes Across America. The spirit of the Believe campaign truly comes alive as we all work together to create these joyful and magical moments.”

Macy’s has donated more than $15 million to Make-A-Wish and helped to grant thousands of wishes through Believe since the campaign was introduced in 2008. This year’s Wishes Across America will benefit children including Brynn, 17, who wishes to be a model, and Jazlean, 13, who wishes to go to New York. The impact of wishes is undeniable and widespread – not only do they increase hope and happiness for kids, but their families, volunteers, supporters, medical professionals, and entire communities are transformed by the experience.

National Believe Day is the pinnacle moment of the Believe campaign, which was inspired by the true story of Virginia O’Hanlon – an 8-year-old child who wrote a letter to the New York Sun newspaper in 1897 asking if there really was a Santa Claus. The response from the paper’s editor, Francis P. Church, became an iconic piece of journalistic history and the most reprinted editorial of all time. “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus,” Church wrote. “He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist.”

DESPAR support earthquake stricken areas in Italy with €20,000 donation to Italian Red Cross

AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands, 2016-Oct-12 — /EPR Retail News/ — In the aftermath of the earthquake, DESPAR Partner Maiora promoted a fundraising initiative named ‘Our hearts do not tremble, they beat’.

On 27 September, the president and managing director of Maiora, Mr Pippo Cannillo, officially handed the donation to Ms Consiglia Margiotta, president of the Bari Committee of the Italian Red Cross.

The sum was raised by Maiora’s employees and independent SPAR retailers who run stores trading under the DESPAR, EUROSPAR and INTERSPAR formats, as well as by employees of another division of the Cannillo Group.

“We do not raise the funds to be seen by the public as we believe that charitable work is best carried out silently,” Mr Cannillo explained. “We have been a channel for this initiative and we have come here to represent all those people who have chosen to donate part of their salaries to this noble cause. We feel that it is our duty to make a public announcement about it” he concluded.

“Keeping in mind that the mission of the Red Cross is a humanitarian one” said president Consiglia Margiotta on the occasion, “we wish to thank DESPAR for their great willingness and sensitivity towards other people’s needs. We hope that this initiative will be the first of a series of common projects undertaken jointly by DESPAR and the Italian Red Cross.”-

DESPAR has always believed in the importance of increasing the value chain, as sharing values generates successful adherence to those values for the company, its people, and the whole community. DESPAR is always an active player of the communities where it operates daily and feels responsible for as a retailer.

DESPAR Italia Partners have become known for their support of earthquake stricken areas in the past few weeks; with recent support being given by DESPAR Nordest (Aspiag Service), our partner in the North-East of Italy.

Lowe’s announces $500,000 donation to American Red Cross Disaster Relief to help flood victims in Louisiana

Lowe’s announces $500,000 donation to American Red Cross Disaster Relief to help flood victims in Louisiana
Lowe’s announces $500,000 donation to American Red Cross Disaster Relief to help flood victims in Louisiana

MOORESVILLE, N.C., 2016-Aug-18 — /EPR Retail News/ — In response to historic flooding that has swept through Louisiana, Lowe’s announced today it will donate $500,000 to American Red Cross Disaster Relief to help those affected. Lowe’s is working with its national nonprofit partners to provide both immediate and long-term support to local communities.

The donation to the Red Cross will help provide food, shelter and comfort to those impacted by the flooding. In addition, Lowe’s has activated its American Red Cross customer donation program at its Louisiana stores to provide a convenient place for customers to make a donation. People also can make a contribution online via the Lowe’s American Red Cross Online Donation Site.

“It’s devastating to see the people of Louisiana, including many of our own employees, once again facing an historic flood event,” said James Frison, Lowe’s director of community relations. “As families begin the difficult recovery process, we want them to know Lowe’s will work closely with the Red Cross and our other partners to support them every step of the way.”

Lowe’s has shipped more than 50 truckloads of critically needed supplies to the area, and Lowe’s employees across the region have been working around the clock to help people affected by flooding that began Friday. In the coming days and weeks, Lowe’s Heroes employee volunteers and the company’s national disaster relief partner, the First Response Team of America, will help with relief efforts in Baton Rouge and other impacted communities. Lowe’s employees from surrounding stores in Louisiana, Mississippi and East Texas also will travel to the hardest-hit areas to support Lowe’s stores and assist communities in need.

On Sunday, the president declared a major disaster in Louisiana, where flooding has impacted tens of thousands. More than 10,000 people have stayed at Red Cross and community shelters across the state, and more than 850 Red Cross volunteers are on the ground providing relief and bringing comfort to affected residents.

“We appreciate Lowe’s significant contribution toward the massive disaster relief efforts being undertaken in Louisiana, which is now our largest response since Hurricane Sandy,” said Brad Kieserman, vice president of disaster services operations and logistics for the Red Cross. “With support from partners like Lowe’s, the Red Cross is working to meet the urgent needs of affected Louisiana families.”

As a member of the Red Cross’ Annual Disaster Giving Program, Lowe’s pledges donations on an ongoing basis in advance of disasters to help ensure the Red Cross can take immediate action. Since partnering with the Red Cross in 1999, Lowe’s and its customers have contributed more than $27 million for disaster relief. Donations to Red Cross Disaster Relief are used to help people affected by disasters big and small.

Lowe’s has teamed up with partners to provide disaster aid to Louisiana communities for more than a decade. After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Lowe’s contributed $650,000 and employees helped restore 10 firehouses across the city. To mark the storm’s 10th anniversary last year, Lowe’s partnered with Rebuilding Together to revitalize New Orleans’Gentilly neighborhood. And in 2014, Lowe’s volunteers distributed hundreds of hurricane kits to prepare low-income homeowners in St. John Parish for hurricane season.

Meijer Simply Give campaign to double match every customer’s $10 donation made Nov. 13-14

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., 2015-11-13 — /EPR Retail News/ — The Meijer Simply Give campaign this holiday season comes on the heels of the retailer’s most successful campaign ever, and will once again double match every customer’s $10 donation made Nov. 13-14 in an effort to restock the shelves of its food pantry partners.

The holiday campaign runs through Jan. 2, but the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based retailer plans to distribute a first installment donation to each of its participating food pantries before the holidays begin so the families they serve have the food they need.

“We are very appreciative of the generosity our customers and team members have shown this year, and we are looking forward to partnering with them again during the holiday Simply Give campaign to help feed our hungry neighbors,” Co-Chairman Hank Meijer said. “Hunger is a problem that continues to increase in all of our communities, and no one deserves to go without.”

Meijer began its Simply Give program in November 2008 as a way to help local food pantries throughout the Midwest achieve their missions of feeding hungry families. Since then, the program has generated more than $18 million for those partners to restock their shelves and feed hungry families. In fact, the fall campaign that ended in September was the most successful campaign in the program’s history, bringing in more than $3 million.

More importantly, those donations stay local, said Cathy Cooper, senior director of community partnerships and giving.

“We know how important it is to our customers that their generous donations remain in their local communities,” Cooper said. “That’s why each of our stores partner with a local food pantry during the Simply Give campaigns.”

During each Simply Give campaign, customers are encouraged to purchase $10 Meijer Food Pantry Donation Cards that are then converted into Meijer food-only gift cards and given to the food pantry selected by the store. The holiday campaign will run through Jan. 2.

Simply Give Double Match Days held Nov. 13-14 will stretch those donations even further: For every $10 donation card purchase, Meijer will give $20 to the program, resulting in a total $30 donation.

Customers can find the donation cards on fixtures near the checkout; they will also be near the Meijer Taste of Meijer in-store sampling stations Nov. 14.

To view a video that further explains the Simply Give program, and other Meijer hunger relief efforts, please visit http://newsroom.meijer.com/meijer-simply-give.

Meijer LPGA Classic presented by Kraft raised $750,000 donation to the retailer’s Simply Give program to help Midwest food pantries restock their shelves

Memorable week of golf raises funds for Meijer Simply Give program to restock Midwest food pantries

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., 2015-7-27 — /EPR Retail News/ — Representatives with the Meijer LPGA Classic presented by Kraft today deemed the second annual tournament a success with a $750,000 donation to the retailer’s Simply Give program, which advances its mission of helping Midwest food pantries restock their shelves and improve the quality of life within the region. American LPGA professional Lexi Thompson of Coral Springs, Fla. took home the trophy at the LPGA Tour event, which took place at Blythefield Country Club July 23-26, but the real winners are the families who will benefit from the donation.

“Thanks to the great weather and enthusiastic crowds, the second annual Meijer LPGA Classic presented by Kraft was a complete success and will continue improving the quality of life in the Midwest,” Meijer President J.K. Symancyk said. “Everyone who has supported the tournament has helped make a difference because this week was about more than world-class golf. It was an opportunity for the entire community to come together to have fun while supporting a very important cause – feeding the hungry.”

While attendance figures are not yet available, representatives said the tournament continued to exceed expectations.

Meijer began its Simply Give program in November 2008 and has since generated more than $16 million for its food pantry partners. The contributions donated as a result of the Meijer LPGA Classic are due, in large part, to the generous Meijer customers who attended the tournament week events, and the sponsors who helped make the event a success.

The $750,000 donation will be divided among the retailer’s estimated 200 food pantry partners participating in the fallSimply Give campaign, which runs through Sept. 12.

“We receive about two-third of our funding for food purchases through the Meijer Simply Give program,” said Mark Tallis, of the Holt Community Food Bank. “We appreciate Meijer for having the Simply Give program because it gives us the ability to help our families with more food and keep them stable so that the children in our community are not going hungry.”

To participate in the Simply Give program, customers can purchase a $10 donation card at their local Meijer store, which will be converted into a Meijer food-only gift card and given to the food pantry selected by the store. Meijer will stretch every customer’s donation further during Double Match Days Sept. 3-5 in recognition of Hunger Action Month. That means for every $10 donation card purchase, Meijer will contribute $20, resulting in a total $30 donation.

A crowd of enthusiastic fans lined the ropes at Blythefield Country Club July 23-26 to watch a competitive field of 144 world-class golfers play 72 holes of stroke play. Ultimately, Lexi Thompson claimed the title as the Meijer LPGA Classic champion, making this her fifth LPGA Tour victory. At age 12, she was the youngest golfer ever to qualify to play in the U.S. Women’s Open.

Thompson said it was important to start the tournament well.

“I knew I had to make birdies against everybody in the field basically with Lizette (Salas) and then Gerina (Piller) behind me, so I knew I had to make a lot of birdies out there and it’s always nice to start off with one,” Thompson said.

LORTON, VA, 2015-5-22 — /EPR Retail News/ — Wegmans Food Markets will deliver a truckload of 15,877 pounds of nonperishable food to the Capital Area Food Bank, the region’s largest hunger relief organization, on Thursday, May 28 at 12 PM. The delivery will take place at the CAFB’s Northern Virginia location (6833 Hill Park Drive, Lorton, VA 22079) and is the first donation from Wegmans’ new Alexandria store, which opens June 14. The truck will carry 20 pallets of canned soups, vegetables and fruit, peanut butter, canned tuna, cereal and juice – all of which will help feed thousands of residents struggling to get enough food to eat.

“We are so excited to welcome Wegmans to our community. Each year we’re already sending over 6 million pounds of food into Northern Virginia. Partnering with Wegmans means that we can get more wholesome food to this area. We’re proud to work with such a strong community-minded company,” said Cecelia Vergaretti, Capital Area Food Bank’s Northern Virginia Director.

Wegmans Alexandria Store Manager Mike Dempsey and a team of employees will be on site to help unload the tractor trailer, sort the food and stock the shelves at the food bank’s Lorton, VA distribution center.

“We know that food banks build healthier communities and it’s a privilege to be able to deliver this food that will serve the needs of our new neighbors in Alexandria,” said Dempsey. “One of our values is to make a difference in every community we serve, and this partnership is one way we’re putting that value into action.”

Helping feed the hungry is a community giving priority for the Rochester, New York based supermarket chain.  Last year, Wegmans donated approximately 15 million pounds of food to area food banks in all of its market areas.

Meijer donates $10,000 to the Great Start Parent Coalition’s Diaper Drive matching their donation of the same amount from the previous year

Renewed partnership has significant impact on the community.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., 2015-2-19 — /EPR Retail News/ — Meijer recently announced a $10,000 contribution to the Great Start Parent Coalition’s Diaper Drive, matching their donation of the same amount from the previous year and furthering the partnership between the two organizations. The Grand Rapids, Mich.-based retailer’s previous donation allowed the Coalition to purchase more than 60,000 diapers for families in need in Kent County, an impact felt by thousands throughout the community who struggle to keep their babies clean, dry, and healthy. The Parent Coalition is excited to be able to facilitate this process again.

The Great Start Parent Coalition, a group of parents and caregivers for young children, works to support the voices of children in the community, preparing them for success in school and life. The ongoing Diaper Drive is an integral part of this work. With one in four babies in Kent County born into poverty, many families are unable to afford dry diapers, resulting in numerous physical and emotional consequences for the children and their parents. Five years ago, the Parent Coalition started the Diaper Drive as a way for parents to help other parents. Since then, they have helped provide nearly 500,000 diapers to over 19 agencies that distribute diapers to families throughout Kent County.

The invaluable partnership between Meijer and the Parent Coalition has deeply strengthened the impact of the Diaper Drive throughout the community. Thanks to their most recent donation, many diapers have already been purchased and were delivered just in time for the 2014 holiday season. The Parent Coalition spent the first third of the $10,000 in December 2014 and was able to provide over 20,000 diapers to various diaper banks in the community including Alpha Women’s Center of Grand Rapids, Alpha Women’s Center of Lowell, Diaper Depot, God’s Kitchen, HELP Pregnancy Crisis Aid, North Kent Community Services, South Grandville Christian Reformed Church, and Streams of Hope.

This effort has been met with much excitement and gratitude, as individuals and organizations from all corners of the county feel the impact.

“The single moms and families that seek services at the Pregnancy Resource Center are so grateful for the diapers made available through this grant. The PRC would not be able to meet the community need without the support of Meijer and Great Start,” said Deb Bierens, family support services manager at the Pregnancy Resource Center in Grand Rapids.

Alpha Women’s Center of Lowell Executive Director Christa Wetzel reflected a similar sentiment: “I cannot express words to show the depth of the gratitude that the Alpha Women’s Center of Lowell feels towards Meijer’s donation of diapers to our center. Diapers are such a burden for our families and it is such a privilege to help assist them with this need. It is donations like this that make it possible for us to assist the families in our community.”

The retailer’s generosity is felt throughout the Grand Rapids area, and the Great Start Parent Coalition is one of many who wish to express their gratitude. Only through partnerships with community organizations, churches, individuals, and businesses like Meijer who are invested in the community and committed to the health and happiness of all of its citizens is the Diaper Drive able to reach so many babies and families throughout the county.

While the Diaper Drive has seen much success over the last five years, there is still much work to be done, as families’ inability to afford clean diapers remains a critical issue. Please visit www.diaperdrivekent.org for ideas on how an individual or organization may become involved in the Diaper Drive efforts, through diaper donations and collections, monetary gifts, or even raising awareness. Together, we can combat the diaper gap in our community, helping families in need keep their babies clean, dry, and healthy – an early and integral step in creating equal opportunities for success for every child in Kent County.

Co-op donation supports the people left homeless after a fire destroyed a South Regina apartment complex

Alberta, Canada, 2015-2-4 — /EPR Retail News/ — Co-op is donating $10,000 to the Canadian Red Cross in support of 30 people left homeless after a fire destroyed a South Regina apartment complex in early January.

Sherwood Co-op is donating $5,000 to the Red Cross, which is helping provide food, clothing and shelter to those affected by the fire.

“Sherwood Co-op is pleased to assist the families that recently lost their homes and belongings in the South Regina apartment fire,” said Troy Verboom, Sherwood Co-op General Manager.

The local donation is being matched by Federated Co-operatives Limited (FCL), on behalf of the Co-operative Retailing System (CRS), as part of a $1 million commitment to the Red Cross over five years for local emergency response efforts in Western Canada.

The Red Cross will receive $100,000 per year to pre-position goods across the West in order to respond quickly to local crises. Another $100,000 per year will be available to match emergency donations to the Red Cross by local co-ops.

This funding has previously aided in flood relief efforts in eastern Saskatchewan and western Manitoba in 2014 and southern Alberta in 2013.
