Dunkin’ Donuts to eliminate all polystyrene foam cups in its global supply chain beginning in spring 2018

Dunkin’ Donuts to eliminate all polystyrene foam cups in its global supply chain beginning in spring 2018

New double-walled paper cups to phase into U.S. restaurants beginning spring 2018

CANTON, MA, 2018-Feb-08 — /EPR Retail News/ — As part of its commitment to serve both people and the planet responsibly, Dunkin’ Donuts, a leading retailer of hot, brewed coffee, today (February 7, 2018) announced plans to eliminate all polystyrene foam cups in its global supply chain beginning in spring 2018, with a targeted completion date of 2020. In U.S. restaurants, Dunkin’ Donuts will replace the foam cup with a new, double-walled paper cup. The majority of Dunkin’ Donuts’ international markets are currently using paper cups, and the brand will work with its franchisees to eliminate foam cups from the remaining international markets by the 2020 goal.

The move complements Dunkin’ Donuts’ earlier commitments in the U.S. to have 80% of fiber-based consumer-facing packaging certified to the Sustainable Forestry Initiative Standard by the end of this year; eliminate artificial dyes from its menu; build new, more energy-efficient restaurants; and partner with the Rainforest Alliance to source certified coffee.

The new, double-walled paper cup is already in use at Dunkin’ Donuts’ next generation concept store, which opened in mid-January in the company’s birthplace of Quincy, Mass. It will be introduced at all Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants in New York City and California in spring 2018, and will be phased in across the U.S. as supplier manufacturing capabilities ramp up.

The double-walled paper cup is made with paperboard certified to the Sustainable Forestry Initiative Standard and will feature the current re-closable lid that Dunkin’ customers know and love. Like Dunkin’ Donuts’ current hot beverage offerings, the new double-walled paper cup will come in four sizes — small, medium, large and extra-large — and will be used for all of the brand’s hot beverages, including coffee, lattes, macchiatos, tea and hot chocolate. With heat retention properties equal to the company’s foam cup, the new double-walled paper cup will keep beverages hot while keeping hands cool, without the need for a sleeve.

According to Karen Raskopf, Chief Communications and Sustainability Officer, Dunkin’ Brands, “With more than 9,000 Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants in the U.S. alone, our decision to eliminate foam cups is significant for both our brand and our industry. We have a responsibility to improve our packaging, making it better for the planet while still meeting the needs of our guests. Transitioning away from foam has been a critical goal for Dunkin’ Donuts U.S., and with the double-walled cup, we will be able to offer a replacement that meets the needs and expectations of both our customers and the communities we serve.”

In 2011, Dunkin’ Donuts announced that its number one sustainability goal was to find an environmentally friendlier coffee cup. Over the past several years, the brand has worked extensively to find a suitable replacement for the foam cup that met criteria for performance, environmental impact and cost.  Dunkin’ Donuts’ transition to paper cups will remove nearly 1 billion foam cups from the waste stream annually.

Dunkin’ Donuts remains committed to sustainable packaging and will continue to explore additional opportunities to increase recycled or certified content for other consumer-facing packaging. Since 2005, the brand has made a number of important packaging improvements in the U.S., including:

  • 2005: Began sourcing a four-cup carrier made of recycled newsprint.
  • 2009: Transitioned to napkins made with 100% recycled paper and added recycled content to espresso sleeves, cup carriers and Box O’ Joe®.
  • 2014: Transitioned to bagel bags made with 100% recycled paper, saving an estimated 20 million pounds of virgin paper per year.
  • 2015: Began transition of the lids for cold beverage cups from PET to recyclable #5 polypropylene, a change that will take 500,000 pounds of material out of the waste stream per year once completed in summer 2018.
  • 2016: Issued a new Sustainable Pulp and Paper Sourcing policy with a goal to source paperboard certified to the SFI Standard for 80% of its consumer-facing fiber-based packaging by the end of 2018.

Dunkin’ Brands, the parent company of Dunkin’ Donuts and Baskin-Robbins, continues to make important progress towards its corporate social responsibility goals, including:

·         Sustainable Building: In 2014, Dunkin’ Donuts launched DD Green™ Achievement, a program designed to help franchisees build sustainable, energy-efficient restaurants in the U.S. There are now approximately 186 DD Green Achievement restaurants around the country. Dunkin’ Brands has set a target to open 500 DD Green Achievement restaurants in the U.S. by the end of 2020. Additionally, the new next generation concept store now being introduced into the system is approximately 25% more energy-efficient than the previous restaurant model.

·         Sustainable Coffee: In 2017, Dunkin’ Donuts expanded its current work with the Rainforest Alliance to have all espresso beverages served at Dunkin’ Donuts U.S. restaurants and in approximately 16 international markets made with 100% Rainforest Alliance Certified™ beans. By the end of 2018, Dunkin’ Donuts Dark Roast Coffee will also be made with 100% Rainforest Alliance Certified™ beans. In European markets, Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants also serve Fair Trade certified espresso.

·         Sustainable Sourcing: As a member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), Dunkin’ Brands continues to participate in multi-stakeholder efforts to advance sustainable palm oil sourcing and reissued its global Sustainable Palm Oil Guidelines in December 2017. In the U.S., Dunkin’ Brands has also committed to sourcing 100% of the eggs for its menu from cage-free sources by 2025 and 100% gestation crate-free pork by 2022. By the end of 2018, any chicken menu offerings in U.S. Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants will have been raised antibiotic-free.

·         Cleaner Labels: As part of the brand’s ongoing efforts to offer cleaner menu labels, Dunkin’ Donuts U.S. introduced donuts without artificial dyes in January. The brand is committed to eliminating artificial dyes from its national food and beverage menu in the U.S. by the end of 2018.

·         Menu Labeling: Dunkin’ Brands partnered with industry peers and consumer advocates in supporting a menu labeling mandate in the U.S. that provides guests with clear and consistent nutritional information when ordering.

Brand Keys’ 23rd annual Customer Loyalty Engagement Index, conducted by the New York-based brand engagement and loyalty research consultancy, paints a picture of the category drivers that drive in-market behavior and engender loyalty, identifying brands that are best able to engage consumers by meeting or exceeding their expectations. Brand Keys’ Customer Loyalty Engagement Index recognizes the brands that receive the highest loyalty and engagement assessments and surpass competitors by “delighting” customers. In the coffee restaurant and packaged coffee categories, consumer preferences were based on consistently meeting customer expectations for taste, quality, service and brand value.

That’s a tremendous feat given the rapid changes in consumer tastes, category values, and customer-experience expectations,” said Robert Passikoff, founder and president, Brand Keys. “These changes have altered the way brands need to deliver against exceptionally high expectations and, once again, Dunkin’ has done just that. The bottom line: customers expect the best, and Dunkin’ has delivered just that.”

  • Dunkin’ on Demand: With fully-integrated digital kiosks coming in 2018, guests will choose to order with or without the help of a crew member.  Dunkin’ Donuts has also introduced an area dedicated to mobile pickups, so that members of the DD Perks® Rewards program who order ahead via Dunkin’s Mobile App can get in and out of the restaurant faster than ever before. Guests will be able to track the status of their orders placed for pickup inside the restaurant via a new digital order status board.

Dunkin’ Donuts declares donuts now artificial dyes free

Dunkin’ Donuts declares donuts now artificial dyes free

  • Milestone is part of brand’s pledge to eliminate artificial dyes from food and beverages by end of 2018
  • Dunkin’ Donuts introduces Snow Flurries Donut as a new donut variety to begin the New Year

CANTON, MA, 2018-Jan-08 — /EPR Retail News/ — Dunkin’ Donuts is kicking off 2018 with news sure to give donut fans a sweet start to the New Year. The brand has removed artificial dyes from its donuts in the U.S., declaring donuts now sold at Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants nationwide are no longer being made using colors from artificial sources*. As part of the company’s ongoing efforts to offer guests great-tasting, high-quality products and cleaner menu labels, Dunkin’ Brands Group, the parent company of Dunkin’ Donuts and Baskin-Robbins, previously pledged to eliminate artificial dyes from all of its food and beverages in the U.S. by the end of 2018.

According to Tony Weisman, Chief Marketing Officer, Dunkin’ Donuts U.S., “We are pleased to start the New Year with exciting and important donut news for our guests. Eliminating artificial dyes from our donuts is an incredible milestone moment for a fun brand whose products are synonymous with bright, colorful confections. After years of research and development, we are thrilled to be taking such a big step in providing guests with simpler ingredients while still delivering the delicious taste and vivid colors expected with our donuts. We look forward to sharing a sweet 2018 with more donut news and innovative new flavors in the months ahead.”

Weisman added that customers will be hard pressed to see the color difference in the new donuts. For example, a cool new addition to Dunkin’s donut offerings, the Snow Flurries Donut, features a frosted donut with wintry blue icing and special snowflake sprinkles, all without colors from artificial sources. The Snow Flurries Donut is available at participating Dunkin’ Donut restaurants throughout the country for a limited time.

By the end of this year, Dunkin’ Donuts will remove artificial dyes across its menu, including frozen beverages such as COOLATTA® frozen beverages, baked goods, breakfast sandwiches and coffee flavorings. Similarly, Dunkin’ Donuts’ sister brand Baskin-Robbins will remove synthetic dyes from its menu, including ice cream sold both at its restaurants and in quarts and pints at retail locations, as well as its syrups, sauces, sprinkles and beverages, including Cappuccino Blast®. The exceptions on both brands’ menus include select supplier-branded ingredients produced by other companies that are used as toppings, ice cream inclusions or decorative elements. Additionally, Baskin-Robbins will take a longer period of time to find replacements for the decorative elements on its ice cream cakes.

Dunkin’ Donuts has been serving guests signature donuts for 68 years. Dunkin’ Donuts is the #1 retailer of donuts in America, and sells 2.7 billion donuts and MUNCHKINS® donut hole treats annually worldwide. Within the United States, Dunkin’ Donuts offers more than 70 varieties of donuts, including beloved flavors such as Boston Kreme, Glazed, Chocolate Glazed Cake and Chocolate Frosted. Additionally, some Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants also feature regional favorites like the Sour Cream Donut in Chicago, and the Peanut Stick in upstate New York.

On weekdays between Monday, December 1 and Wednesday, December 20, at least one Dunkin’ Donuts restaurant somewhere in the U.S. will serve up to 500 free medium-sized cups of its signature hot coffee. Dunkin’ Donuts renews sponsorship of the National Women’s Hockey League

Dunkin’ Donuts renews agreement as official coffee and quick service restaurant of the NWHL

CANTON, MA, 2017-Nov-01 — /EPR Retail News/ — As the National Women’s Hockey League (NWHL) drops the puck for the start of its third season, Dunkin’ Donuts has renewed its sponsorship of the league, confirming its commitment to the NWHL and strong support for women’s hockey. Dunkin’ Donuts, which became the league’s first-ever official corporate sponsor in its inaugural season in 2015, will remain the official coffee and quick service restaurant of the NWHL as part of the extended agreement for the upcoming season.

Through its partnership, Dunkin’ Donuts will continue to coordinate with the NWHL’s four franchises – Boston Pride, Connecticut Whale, Metropolitan Riveters and defending champions Buffalo Beauts – to provide female youth players throughout key markets with private hockey clinics featuring team representatives. Additionally, Dunkin’ Donuts’ iconic pink and orange logo will continue to be featured on all team jerseys, signage on league goal posts and behind each bench, and advertising on www.nwhl.zone and each team website.

According to Tom Manchester, Vice President, Field Marketing, Dunkin’ Donuts, “Dunkin’ Donuts has a long hockey heritage, from sponsoring leagues, teams and arenas to keeping fans and families running with a hot cup of coffee in the stands or on the way to practice. Our partnership with the NWHL not only deepens our connection to hockey culture, but helps drive critical awareness for female athletes and the increasing popularity of women’s hockey. It has been a privilege to be part of this important league and we look forward to continuing our support of the NWHL as a pinnacle of women’s hockey.”

The NWHL is the first professional women’s hockey league in North America. Its new season begins tomorrow with the start of each team’s 16-game schedule, and concludes in March 2018 with playoffs and the champion team raising the Isobel Cup, the championship trophy named after the daughter of Lord Stanley. Fans across the globe can enjoy the Twitter NWHL Game of the Week streamed live for free at NWHL.twitter.com.

According to NWHL Commissioner Dani Rylan, “Dunkin’ Donuts has been a fantastic partner and friend for the NWHL since the beginning, and their invaluable support of our league and commitment to our athletes has played a significant role in our success in bringing fans the chance to watch some of the best women’s hockey players in the world. Through our Dunkin’ Donuts clinics, young girls are not only able to visualize the dream of becoming professional players, they can learn first-hand from NWHL athletes. The NWHL truly runs on Dunkin’, and on behalf of our teams and our players we could not be more pleased that Dunkin’ Donuts will remain an important part of our league.”

Dunkin’ Donuts has scored key sponsorships in recent years to further its mission to support female athletes and drive awareness of the increasingly popular sport of women’s hockey. In 2016 Dunkin’ Donuts announced a multi-year agreement with USA Hockey that includes designation as the Official Coffee Shop of the U.S. Women’s National Team. Dunkin’ Donuts also has a long-standing personal services agreement with two-time Olympic silver medalist Meghan Duggan, a member of the U.S. Women’s National Team since 2006. Duggan, a five-time world champion, has also starred with the NWHL’s Buffalo Beauts.

Dunkin’ Donuts is the official U.S. coffee, donut and breakfast sandwich of the NHL®. The brand has a long and proud history of partnerships across other sports, including the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, New York Mets, New York Giants, New York Jets, New England Patriots, and Philadelphia Eagles.

Dunkin’ Donuts Original Blend and Dunkin’ Decaf hot coffee now available on board Amtrak Northeast Regional trains

Partnership Launched Earlier this Year with Original Blend and Dunkin’ Decaf® Hot Coffees on Acela Express Trains on the Northeast Corridor

CANTON, MA and WASHINGTON, DC, 2017-Sep-21 — /EPR Retail News/ — Dunkin’ Donuts and Amtrak today (September 20, 2017)  announced the expansion of their partnership to now offer Dunkin’ Donuts Original Blend and Dunkin’ Decaf hot coffee on board Amtrak Northeast Regional trains. The newest phase of this partnership follows the successful April launch of Dunkin’ Donuts hot coffee on board Amtrak Acela Express high-speed trains throughout the Northeast Corridor.

With the expanded partnership, Dunkin’ Donuts’ signature hot coffee will be available to nearly 12 million customers who ride Northeast Regional and Acela Express services each year. Dunkin’ Donuts hot coffee will be served all day in First Class and Café cars, and will be brewed using the same equipment featured in Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants to ensure the same high quality and great taste enjoyed by millions of Dunkin’ guests each and every day.

“After a successful Acela Express launch, we’re excited to expand our partnership with Amtrak and serve those traveling to more than 50 stops between Richmond, VA and Boston, MA,” said Brian Gilbert, Dunkin’ Donuts Senior Director, New Business Development. “Whether guests are traveling for business or leisure in the Northeast, they’ll have Dunkin’ Donuts hot coffee to keep them energized throughout the trip.”

“We are excited to provide even more of our customers with an elevated coffee experience,” said Thomas J. NEW FRANCHISEES QSR GROUP, LLC AND GUZARATTI, LLC HELP EXPAND LEADING COFFEE AND BAKERY BRAND THROUGHOUT GEORGIA

CANTON, MA, 2017-Sep-07 — /EPR Retail News/ — Dunkin’ Donuts, America’s all-day, everyday stop for coffee and baked goods, announced today a signing of store development agreements with franchisees QSR Group, LLC, and Guzaratti LLC to develop six new restaurants throughout Georgia. QSR Group will develop five Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants in Macon, Georgia, including two multi-brand locations with Baskin-Robbins, the world’s largest chain of ice cream specialty shops. Guzaratti, LLC will develop one Dunkin’ Donuts location in a gas and convenience store.

New franchisees Nishith and Navnit Patel of QSR Group, LLC are both experienced multi-unit operators of quick service restaurants. They also have extensive experience in the Macon, Georgia area. Nishit and Navnit are dedicated to further developing the brand in the region with their first restaurant scheduled to open in 2018.

“We couldn’t be more excited to develop Dunkin’ Donuts and Baskin-Robbins, two iconic brands, in Macon. The team we’ve formed has a deep understanding of what it takes to be successful in multi-unit restaurant development and we’re looking forward to our first of many openings next year,” said Navnit, Dunkin’ Donuts and Baskin-Robbins franchisee. “As we expand throughout Macon over the next several years, we hope to attract new customers, as well as longtime fans of the brands, and show them the premium products and quality service we have to offer.”

New franchisee Smita Patel of Guzaratti LLC is an Atlanta-based business owner with experience operating other restaurant concepts. Smitha will include Dunkin’ Donuts in a new “green” gas station and convenience store location in the Buckhead suburb of Atlanta. The Buckhead location is scheduled to open by the end of 2017.

With more than 190 Dunkin’ Donuts locations in the Greater Atlanta and Macon areas, the company is continuing to recruit franchisees in the Atlanta and Augusta areas. To help fuel additional growth in the market, special development incentives are available.

“Dunkin’ Donuts’ and Baskin-Robbins’ growth would not be possible without the introduction of new franchisees to the system, which demonstrates their high confidence in our brands and world-class support team,” said Grant Benson, CFE, Senior Vice President of Franchising and Development, Dunkin’ Brands. “Our hard-working and dedicated franchisees bring the Dunkin’ Donuts and Baskin-Robbins brands, products, and promotions to life each and every day and have been essential to our growth over the years, which has solidified our position as a leader in the quick service restaurant industry.”

CANTON, MA, 2017-Jun-21 — /EPR Retail News/ — June 21 marks the first day of summer 2017, and a new survey commissioned by Dunkin’ Donuts, a summer beverage destination, shows that two-thirds (67%) of adults are looking forward to summer more this year than in previous years. • Will coffee fuel folks’ fun this summer? Nearly two-thirds (65%) agree that a great cup of coffee makes their summer activities more enjoyable.
  • Sometimes summer fun is replaced by summer guilt, as more than one-third (34%) of adults admit always or sometimes feeling sorry about taking time off from their jobs during the summer.

Dunkin’ Donuts introduced Frozen Dunkin’ Coffee at the beginning of May as a permanent addition to its coffee lineup, capturing the same authentic taste and quality of Dunkin’ Donuts’ Original Blend coffee, now blended frozen. To meet the personal preferences of any coffee drinker, Frozen Dunkin’ Coffee can be customized with any Dunkin’ Donuts flavor swirl or flavor shot as well as the choice of cream or whole or skim milk. Frozen Dunkin’ Coffee joins Dunkin’ Donuts’ existing menu of high-quality coffee choices perfect for staying energized during warmer weather, including iced coffee and espresso beverages, Cold Brew coffee, and ready-to-drink bottled iced coffees.
