FRF: Florida families will spend more than ever on Father’s Day this year

Dads to get showered with gifts in record-setting fashion this year; Meals, clothing, gift cards, electronics and personal care items top the list of popular options

TALLAHASSEE, FL, 2017-Jun-13 — /EPR Retail News/ — The Florida Retail Federation (FRF), the state’s premier trade association celebrating its 80th year of supporting Florida’s retail industry, says Florida families will spend more than ever on Father’s Day this year. Consumers are expected to spend an average $134.75 for the holiday, up almost $10 from last year’s $125.92. Total spending nationwide is expected to reach $15.5 billion, the highest in the survey’s 15-year history and almost a billion more than last year.

“I am very encouraged to see that Floridians and families across the country are planning to spend more than ever before to celebrate the special dads in their lives,” said FRF President/CEO R. Scott Shalley. “These results show that Americans are feeling more and more confident and optimistic in this improving economy and dads and retailers can expect to benefit this Father’s Day.”

According to FRF’s partners at the National Retail Federation’s annual survey conducted by Prosper Insight and Analytics, consumers plan to spend $3.3 billion on special outings such as dinner, brunch or other types of a “fun activity/experience” (given by 48 percent). Clothing (given by 46 percent) and gift cards (given by 43 percent) are tied at $2.2 billion each while consumer electronics (given by 21 percent) follow at $1.8 billion. As with Mother’s Day, greeting cards are the most commonly purchased gift at 64 percent but account for only $861 million of projected spending. Other popular gifts include personal care, automotive accessories, books, music, home improvement/gardening supplies and sporting goods.

The survey found 27 percent of shoppers will opt for a “gift of experience” such as tickets to a concert or a sporting event. The largest projected growth category was for “personal care” items such as cologne, razors, aftershave, etc. where spending is expected to be 20% higher over last year.

When searching for the perfect gift, 40 percent of consumers will head to department stores and 34 percent will shop online while 26 percent will shop at a discount store, 24 percent at a specialty store and 19 percent at a local small business. Among smartphone owners, 33 percent will use them to research gift ideas but only 18 percent will use them to make a purchase. Tablets are used more frequently both to research (32 percent) and buy (19 percent).

More than half of those surveyed plan to buy for their father or stepfather (54 percent), while others will shop for their husband (29 percent) or son (10 percent).

NRF: Americans are expected to spend more than ever on gifts for Father’s Day this year

WASHINGTON, 2017-Jun-06 — /EPR Retail News/ — Americans are expected to spend more than ever on gifts for Father’s Day this year with the biggest share going to special outings like a ballgame, concert or dinner, according to the National Retail Federation’s annual survey conducted by Prosper Insight & Analytics.

Father’s Day shoppers are expected to spend an average $134.75 for the holiday, up from last year’s $125.92. With 77 percent of consumers surveyed celebrating, total spending is expected to reach $15.5 billion. That’s the highest number in the survey’s 15-year history, topping last year’s previous record of $14.3 billion.

“It’s encouraging to see that consumers are spending on special occasions such as Father’s Day,” NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay said. “This is a positive sign of strong consumer confidence heading into the second half of the year, and a good deal for all the dads who will reap the benefits.”

The survey found 27 percent of dads would love to receive a “gift of experience” for Father’s Day — and 25 percent of shoppers plan to grant that wish with gifts like tickets to a concert or a sporting event. When dinners, brunches and other types of “fun activity/experience” are included, consumers plan to spend $3.3 billion on special outings, which will be given by 48 percent of those surveyed.

Next up on the spending list is $2.2 billion on gift cards (given by 43 percent), followed by $2.2 billion on clothing (46 percent) and $1.8 billion on consumer electronics (21 percent). Personal care products such as a bottle of cologne (21 percent) total $888 million, slightly edging out home improvement supplies (16 percent) at $885 million. Greeting cards are the most common gift, purchased by 64 percent of consumers, but only account for $861 million of projected spending.

“With shoppers planning to be more generous to dad this year, the personal care category will be one to watch,” Prosper Principal Analyst Pam Goodfellow said. “Planned spending on items like cologne, aftershave and razors rose nearly 20 percent year-over-year, outpacing growth in every other gift category for Father’s Day.”

Commissaries to bring savings and exciting events this June

FORT LEE, Va. , 2017-May-23 — /EPR Retail News/ — June will bring more than hot temperatures for commissary patrons looking for plenty of promotional savings and exciting events, said the Defense Commissary Agency’s director of sales.

“Our customers will be treated to fun, spectacular events with super summer savings in the mix,” said Tracie Russ. “We’re kicking off June with our annual Healthy Lifestyle Festivals worldwide and other events highlighting our ongoing 150th commissary anniversary celebration.

“Your commissary has something for everyone,” she added. “Be it savings on the ingredients for that special Father’s Day menu or the quick meals, beverages and snacks for the family vacation road trip.”

DeCA’s industry partners – vendors, suppliers and brokers – are collaborating with commissaries in June to offer discounts beyond everyday savings. Always check what’s on the “end of the aisle” for themed items with extra low pricing. Overseas stores may have substitute events for certain promotional programs.

  • “Live Healthy and Save Big!” Military resale organizations are partnering for Healthy Lifestyle Festivals, May 26 – June 25, at installations worldwide. Some locations have fests scheduled the first weekend of July. This annual event features discounted prices on produce at commissary farmers markets, savings on workout equipment and apparel at exchanges, health screenings at local clinics, and fitness events hosted by the installation morale, welfare and recreation activities office. At many locations, veterinarians will also offer food safety tips and health information for family pets. Check for local times and dates on the Healthy Lifestyle Festival page.
  • “Patriot Perks Program” returns for its fifth year. From June 19 to July 16, in recognition of the commissaries’ 150th anniversary, patrons worldwide can enter to win commissary shopping sprees with the grand prize being a year of free groceries. Look for product displays with Patriot Perks signage or visit the Patriot Perks site.
  • Kellogg’s “Despicable Me 3” movie launch promotion! To celebrate the commissaries’ 150th anniversary and the “Despicable Me 3” movie, patrons have an opportunity worldwide from June 19 to July 16 to win a $150 commissary gift card. Look for demos, high-value coupons and sale signage from the following participating name brands: Cheez-It Crackers, Club Crackers, Keebler Chips, Deluxe Cookies, Pringles, and Eggo Waffles.
  • Golden Seal Sweepstakes!   • General Mills is offering its annual “Sandsational Savings” program. This worldwide program from June 5 to July 2 will offer recipe ideas, high-value in-store coupons and giveaways.
  • Smucker’s announces its 9th annual Mission Breakfast Event. From June 5-18, patrons will see mass displays and savings on the following name brands: Smucker’s, Martha White, Crisco, Folgers, Hungry Jack, Dunkin Donuts, Millstone and more. The stateside commissary that creates the most creative product display based on these products and increases its sales during the listed time frame will win the grand prize of a free breakfast event for all of the military personnel on the installation.
