Foodstuffs North Island Limited appoints David Stewart as General Manager Merchandise

Auckland, New Zealand, 2016-Jul-22 — /EPR Retail News/ — Foodstuffs North Island Limited has announced the appointment of David Stewart as General Manager Merchandise – a transition that follows six successful years as Chief Financial Officer with the co-operative.

Foodstuffs North Island’s CEO Chris Quin says Stewart has done an “outstanding job” as a CFO, first for Foodstuffs Auckland Ltd, and most recently Foodstuffs North Island.

“Our co-op is in excellent financial health,” says Quin. “Our auditors have confirmed to the board that the performance of our commercial operation’s team is right up there with the best, and there’s no doubt that David’s leadership has been a key factor in this.”

“We’re now entering an exciting time for the merchandise team, and under David’s direction we will continue to employ effective and integrated merchandise practices that will enrich our customer’s retail experience.”

“David’s strategic thinking, commercial acumen and strong leadership will be hugely beneficial in making shopping easier for customers, saving them time while innovating to provide inspiration about what to buy via the channel that’s most convenient for them.”

For his part, Stewart says he’s enjoying the shift in focus away from raw figures to consumer trends.

“In essence, my new role is all about ensuring we’re stocking the products our customers want,” says Stewart. “That means identifying early on where they may be shifting their spending habits to, and working with suppliers on new product innovations.”

“We know, for example, that shoppers are thinking more about healthy options and increasingly looking for products that have been sourced sustainably. We’ve got to respond to those demands while at the same time continuing to offer great value and range.”

Stewart’s appointment is effective immediately, though his last official duty as CFO won’t be until 11 August 2016, when he delivers the Foodstuffs North Island Group’s financial results at its AGM in Wellington.

In the meantime, the hunt is on for a new CFO for an organisation with more than $7.5bn in annual store sales, assets worth over $2.5bn, and current capital expenditure in excess of $100m.

“David Ison, currently the business’ Group Financial Controller, will be our acting CFO until the recruitment search is over. He has very strong financial expertise and has played a critical role in steering the financial integration of the legacy businesses.”

Quin praised outgoing GM Merchandise Baden Ngan Kee for his hard work and dedication.

“Under Baden’s leadership, the merchandise team has excelled, keeping on top of consumer trends and delivering innovative solutions across our banners at a time of increasing focus on e-commerce.”

Foodstuffs North Island Limited to close its Write Price store in Wairoa after 29 years

Auckland, New Zealand, 2016-Jun-06 — /EPR Retail News/ — Foodstuffs North Island Limited has today announced its Write Price store in Wairoa will close after 29 years.

“It is always a difficult decision to close a store, but following the announcement by Trevor Wong, the owner-operator of Write Price Wairoa, that he is planning to retire, Foodstuffs has taken the decision that the store will not be sold to another owner,” says Doug Cochrane, General Manager Retail, Foodstuffs North Island Ltd. “Trevor’s announcement in conjunction with an extensive review of our offer in Wairoa has lead us to believe this is the right decision and one which will ensure we can continue to provide the Wairoa community with the best possible supermarket offer for the long-term.”

“We currently have one Write Price and one New World supermarket in Wairoa however, it has become increasingly difficult to sustain two supermarkets in the district. We feel our New World store is best placed to meet the community’s everyday shopping requirements,” adds Cochrane. “New World has the best range, great prices and customer rewards through Fly Buys so we really believe it is the best fit for our Wairoa customers.”

“After almost 35 years in the supermarket industry, Trevor is looking forward to retiring from the supermarket business to spend more time with his family and four grandchildren. Trevor began his Foodstuffs career in 1987 with the purchase of Write Price Wairoa and is a respected member of the Wairoa community.  During his 29 years at the store, Trevor has contributed significantly to the people of Wairoa through the sponsorship of many local schools, clubs and community events,” says Cochrane. “On behalf of Foodstuffs I’d like to thank Trevor for his tremendous contribution to Foodstuffs North Island and the Wairoa Community and wish him all the very best with his retirement.”

“I’d also really like to take this opportunity to thank the team at Write Price Wairoa who have been doing a great job. This decision is absolutely no reflection on them,” says Cochrane. “We are supporting staff at Write Price Wairoa through this challenging time.”

The last day of trading for Write Price Wairoa will be Sunday, 3 July 2016. The store will continue to trade as normal right up until the closure date. Trevor and the team would like to thank all their customers for their loyal patronage at Write Price Wairoa, and they are confident Brookes Stuart and the team at New World Wairoa will continue to meet all their needs into the future.

Foodstuffs is committed to serving the Wairoa community for many years to come and the plan for the existing Write Price site is to build a brand new supermarket for the Wairoa community.  The new store will offer the full supermarket range and fantastic fresh offer that New World is known for and will be a much lighter and brighter shopping experience for customers delivering more product choice, great value and fantastic service.

Foodstuffs North Island has purchased the Write Price property and the business is currently evaluating redevelopment options of the site.

New Zealand: Foodstuffs North Island Limited to upgrade New World Pahiatua

Foodstuffs North Island Limited is excited to announce that they will soon be starting work to upgrade New World Pahiatua.

AUCKLAND, New Zealand, 2015-11-9 — /EPR Retail News/ — “The planned upgrade of New World Pahiatua includes seismic strengthening work to the building to achieve an A grade earthquake rating and also a facelift to the exterior and interior of the New World.” says Angela Bull, Foodstuffs North Island General Manager Property Development. “The work also includes improvements to the car park and access to the New World and a more modern and brighter store for our customers.”

The first stage of the work will involve demolition of the vacant buildings next to the New World. This demolition work will allow contractors full access to the New World exterior walls which are currently rated a D grade, and to strengthen them up to an A grade Earthquake rating.

New World Owners Jason and Rachel Griggs are excited about this project and the investment that Foodstuffs is making in the building. “We want to thank the community in advance for their patience and understanding as we carry out this important construction work”, says Jason and Rachel.

“During the demolition and earthquake strengthening project we will do everything we can so that there is very little impact or disruption on our customers’ normal shopping experience. Customers will be able to purchase all of their Christmas requirements in the main store, and we have also added a small room to the rear of the store so that locals can continue to order Gift Baskets. Our customers should just email their requirements to nwpahiatua@foodstuffs.co.nz, or ask at the checkouts to speak with Terry who has been creating amazing gift baskets for New World over the past 10 years.”

Final details of the interior refresh are still under planning stages but the exterior plan has been completed and will add a smart modern look to the main street. Tenders have now been submitted for the project and several local businesses have secured work on this development.
Work on the upgrade to New World Pahiatua will start in mid-November 2015. During this time the store will remain open, and staff will make sure customers can do all their shopping in a safe and convenient environment.

“This revised scheme for a replacement PAK’nSAVE at Tamatea will bring a lighter, brighter and better PAK’nSAVE shopping experience for our customers,” says Foodstuffs North Island Limited General Manager Property Development, Angela Bull.  “We have taken the opportunity to tweak the design of the store to introduce plenty of natural light, wider aisles and a more spacious retail environment, plus plenty of car parking.  The modern, new look store means that we can provide an improved offer, while still ensuring our policy of delivering New Zealand’s lowest grocery prices which our customers expect from PAK’nSAVE.
