Debenhams Donates Staff Hours To Help Independent Shops Recover

Debenhams Battersea, which was looted during the recent London riots, is to donate a ‘working week’ of hours to the local community, seconding staff to help smaller, independent stores recover.

Despite the damage that was done, Debenhams Battersea was open again just three days after the events of Monday 8th August. Staff worked alongside local residents to clean up and get the store trading as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, other stores in the area have not been so lucky and are still boarded up without stock to sell or even shelving and display units to put it on.

As such, 35 hours of Debenhams’ staff time has been made available for a month to those businesses that could benefit from the manpower and retail knowledge on offer.

Debenhams Battersea store manager, Neil Roberts, said: “In the spirit of the kindness shown to us by the people of Clapham and Battersea, we would like to give something back to the community.

“Practical support from all areas of our business is available to local, independent shops and businesses that need a helping hand to get back up and running.”

“The Clapham Junction Town Centre Partnership is delighted with the on-going support it gives small businesses in helping them get back on their feet.”

High street store Debenhams has decided that they should be preserved to show how British people rallied around after the unprecedented street disturbances.

It believes the words on the boards make them a valuable piece of history, reminding everyone how local people felt, and that the violence and destruction was the product of a tiny minority.

Said Debenhams Battersea store manager, Neil Roberts: “The generosity of the people of Clapham and Battersea has transformed plain pieces of wood into a testament for our times.

“Their words of support are proof that, in times of adversity, Londoners still have the strength of character to stand up and offer a helping hand.”

So many messages of support were scrawled on the boards covering Debenhams’ ransacked Clapham Junction store that they quickly became a local landmark.

Visitors came from all over London – and even a few from overseas – to see what had been written, and to add a message of their own.

Among the messages were: “We have taken Clapham back. The rioters won’t stop our community”. Others said: “Clapham, we love you. Get well soon”, and “We have lived and loved here for 14 years. How dare you destroy our amazing community”.

So many messages of support were written that they filled every available inch of the boards, each measuring 9ft by 6ft.

Neil Roberts at Debenhams said: “While looting and destruction grabbed the headlines, the voices of ordinary people went virtually unheard.

“These boards, tell us, in their own words, how they felt at that time. They have become priceless pieces of social documentary.

“After the riots, hundreds of local people turned up to sweep away the broken glass and to help us get our store up and running again. We didn’t have to ask. Instead, they came and did all that they could to rebuild their community again.

“These boards record the very essence of that human spirit.”

The boards have now been taken down and are being preserved carefully by Debenhams. Conversations have been taking place to try and find a home for them in a prominent location where the general public can come and view them.

Debenhams Reveals Parents Need ‘Nestoration’ When Children Leave Home

Debenhams has revealed that parents are stockpiling cash for investment in a range of household improvements after their children have gone to University in the autumn or left home, according to a poll carried out by the high street retailer.

Debenhams quizzed 1,000 parents with teens and asked them when they were likely to invest significant sums in redecorating or refurnishing their homes. The department store found that 74% of parents, battered by the costs of raising their kids, were planning to hold on to their cash and refurbish their homes after their kids have left home.

Just over half of those polled (53%) said they would spend up to £5,000 to put their houses right and 29% will spend up to £10,000. Debenhams is calling this the “nestoration” phase, as parents upgrade from economy living to a first-class lifestyle.

Analysis of the shopping patterns of newly-liberated parents by Debenhams reveals that oak and walnut furniture, luxury sofas, better quality office furniture, leather seats and luxurious bedding are likely purchases.

The most common types of damage caused by kids were remote control dents on the floor, ruined sofas, wall gouges, floor scratches, food and drink spillages, broken beds, broken door handles, fingerprints, drawing and graffiti on walls, kicked doors and ‘cave-papering’ their rooms (posters on all walls and ceiling).

One parent polled was so offended by the state of his 16-year-old teen’s bedroom and his reluctance to bring dirty plates and glasses down that he installed a dishwasher in the bedroom.

Another said that the sheer number of fingerprints on the walls had turned the house into a forensic scientist’s dream home.

The principal reasons for delaying investment in ‘nestoration’ were the following:
kids are untidy and have less respect for property than the parents did when they were younger, kids tend to see their rooms as their own property these days, kids spill food and drink and don’t look after things – they think everything is easily replaceable.

Steve Lightfoot, divisional trading director of home at Debenhams commented:
“We’re witnessing a sea change in the way that parents view their homes and home maintenance.

“It used to be that parents were consistently house proud, but I think they have become a bit more pragmatic these days and are putting off replacing things and redecorating until their kids have left home. The parent-child relationship has started to look a bit more like a landlord-tenant relationship.”

One survey respondent said: “The trouble with kids these days is that they’ve taken the idea of ‘MySpace’ a bit too literally and really don’t respect property. Nor do they really appreciate the cost of maintaining a home. It’s safer for us to put off refurbishing the house until our children have left and not worry too much about wear and tear.”

Alun Lewis, a builder and decorator from Luton, said: “I’ve definitely seen a pick-up in work from people whose kids have just left home. Some of the bedrooms that I’ve had to put right have been incredible, but a lick of paint and some new furniture is all it takes really. You’d never know.”

Displaysense Has Been Carrying Out Big Changes To Its European Online Advertising Campaigns In Order To Meet The Demands Of Its International Customers

According to Displaysense, the UK’s leading supplier of display cabinets and mannequins, many companies are not tackling all of the issues surrounding international language barriers and could be missing out on business as a result.

Due to the success of the company’s European website Displaysense.com, Displaysense has been bombarded over recent months with more and more seemingly unusual enquiries for products, which has largely been due to poor translation and misunderstanding of products and their purpose.

The company’s sales team has faced strange requests over the past year, including a customer from France searching for a ‘naked female model’, when they meant mannequin, and a lady from Germany enquiring “if your Fach came with screws”, with ‘Fach’ meaning ‘shelf’ in German. They have also dealt with partial translations from European customers, such as the Polish customer who was looking for some cack stands, when they meant cake stands.

In order to better service their international customers and avoid further embarrassment to the Displaysense sales team, keyword translations are to be added to the website’s search tool. As in the example of the shelving unit, the search tool will direct foreign users who use such phrases or words to the correct product and provide the facility to pay in Euros rather than sterling.

Eventually we would hope to offer domain specific sites that are fully translated, but that is some time off yet.”
