Ajman, United Arab Emirates, 2018-Jan-17 — /EPR Retail News/ — Majid Al Futtaim – the leading shopping mall, communities, retail and leisure pioneer across the Middle East, Africa and Asia – announced the opening of 50 exciting international brands and dining concepts as part of its ongoing enhancement project at City Centre Ajman.

City Centre Ajman is transforming into a regional mall with an investment of AED 643 million, which is part of Majid Al Futtaim’s announcement made in June 2016 to increase its total investment in the UAE by AED 30 billion by 2026, taking its total investment in the country to AED 48 billion.

With a gross leasable area of 34,000 sqm, the mall brings 14 brands to Ajman for the first time.  Fashion-forward shoppers will find all their beauty essentials at international stores Inglot and Lush, which mark their debut in the emirate. Style enthusiasts can also shop for all the latest, trendy outfits at Garage and US Polo, which make their first foray into the city, as well.

City Centre Ajman takes family dining to the next level by introducing alfresco eating options for diners who want to enjoy the cool weather while savouring a multi-cuisine spread. Portuguese-style casual dining restaurant Nando’s, Turkish cuisine masters Mado café and authentic Italian comfort food restaurant Pizza Express are serving up their world-famous recipes to residents and tourists for the first time in Ajman.

Visitors can also opt to start their day with a steaming cup of coffee and buttery croissants at the new, bigger Starbucks and Gerard Café, which have an indoor and outdoor seating area, or sit down with friends in the central galleria for a hearty breakfast of freshly toasted bagels and beverages at Tim Hortons.

Adrenaline seekers and young-at-hearts can enjoy hours of fun at Majid Al Futtaim’s family entertainment centre, Magic Planet, which is now grown to 1,466 sqm in size. While the kids have their time out on the rides, parents can kick back and enjoy the latest movies at the relocated VOX Cinemas at City Centre Ajman.

The innovatively designed mall extension boasts a bigger parking facility with 1,800 spaces. It took more than six million man hours to construct the striking new wing, which has a central galleria, skylight roof allowing natural light to stream in during the day and contrast lighting levels in stores that create an inviting ambiance for shoppers.

The first phase of the expansion was carried out in line with green building protocol and Majid Al Futtaim’s sustainability strategy. Energy-efficient design and procedures, including installing LED lighting and water-saving, low-flow faucets and fixtures help reduce the mall’s carbon footprint.

The next development phase will involve the renovation of the existing mall which will see City Centre Ajman grow from 29,000 to 55,300 sqm in size upon completion in 2019.  As part of the upgrades, the public areas and facilities, including the toilets, baby changing area and prayer rooms will be enhanced for a seamless transition between the old and new section of the mall.

Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 2017-Dec-13 — /EPR Retail News/ — The inaugural UAE National Ski and Snowboard Championships at Ski Dubai witnessed extraordinary skiing and snowboarding performances by more than 130 home-grown snow sports athletes. Concluded recently, the first-of-its-kind event was organised by Majid Al Futtaim, the leading shopping mall, communities, retail and leisure pioneer across the Middle East, Africa and Asia, under the patronage of Dubai Police and the Community Sport initiative of H.H Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai – Chairman of the Executive Council – Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council. The championship was held on December 8th and 9th, 2017, and was supported by the UAE National Olympics Committee and UAE Ice Sports Federation

Attended by hundreds of cheering fans, the country’s biggest ever snow sports event opened with an impressive performance by Dubai Police band, which marched from Ski Dubai through to Central galleria and back to Ski Dubai enthralling visitors along the way.

The championship, which was divided into four snow sports disciplines, provided unparalleled thrills for snow sports fans and enthusiasts from the UAE and beyond and marks a crucial step in ensuring the UAE’s membership in the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS).

The  alpine competition on day one was opened by renowned athletes: Gorgio Rocca, winner of 11 World Cup races in Alpine Skiing and four times Olympian, up and coming British snowboarder Sparrow Knox; and 2010 X games big air gold medallist Halldor Helgason. For the second day the freestyle judging panel included 5 international judges headed up by World Cup head Judge Martin Carr. Dedicated to ensuring the championship was held to the highest of global standards, the highly esteemed panel of judges invested all of their efforts to encourage the young participants throughout the event.

There were a total of 30 winners across four disciplines, 18 of whom were UAE nationals, underscoring the growing popularity of snow sports in the Arab world and Ski Dubai’s relentless pursuit to foster and mentor new skiing and snowboarding athletes.

Following world-class display of snow sports skills by participants in Alpine speed disciplines of Slalom Skiing and Giant Slalom, the winners for day-one were announced. Robyn Leslie (GBR) took the top prize in Slalom Skiing Women’s category while Oscar Morgan (AUS) won the Men’s category. Giant Slalom first place was a tie between Robyn Leslie (GBR) and Summer Spendlove (GBR) in the Women’s category, while Oscar Morgan (AUS) swept the top prize in the men category.

The second day of the championship was equally spell binding as the UAE Freestyle Ski and Snowboard Championships in two freestyle disciplines; Slopestyle and Big Air got underway. The day saw performances by a further ten snow sports athletes; Ayshia Al Tamimi (UAE) claimed the gold in Slopestyle Ski women category and Faisal Abdulla (UAE) in the Slopestyle Ski men category, while Saaed Almatrooshi (UAE) swept up the first prize in the Slopestyle Snowboard male category.

Big Air, a more extreme version of Slopestyle where competitors are awarded points based on the Degree of Difficulty of their tricks on a huge jump , was won by Meera Sahoo (UAE), Faisal Abdulla (UAE) and Saaed Almatrooshi (UAE) Freestyle Ski Women category, Freestyle Ski men category and men snowboard category respectively.

Mall of the Emirates and Kempinski Hotel Mall of the Emirates ring in the festive season with the UAE’s largest charity cake sale 

Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 2017-Dec-08 — /EPR Retail News/ — Majid Al Futtaim – the leading shopping mall, communities, retail and leisure pioneer across the Middle East, Africa, and Asia – has announced the return of the ‘Annual Stollen Charity Cake Sale’ at Mall of the Emirates in partnership with Kempinski Hotel Mall of the Emirates on Friday 8 December.

Now in its 12th year, the highly anticipated festive family event is set to be bigger and better than ever and takes place in the mall’s Central Galleria from 10am onwards, with the goal of selling a record amount of the festive German Cake. All proceeds from the sale will go to the Emirates Red Crescent and will be used to provide essential support promoting humanitarian work on both domestic and international levels.

Under the leadership of Sudqi Naddaf, Executive Chef at Kempinski Hotel Mall of the Emirates, a team of 30 chefs will spend weeks preparing and baking around the clock to create the largest string of stollen made to-date. With the help of over 50 volunteer team members, the Annual Stollen Charity Cake Sale is set to be a huge success once again.

By the day of the sale, they will have used more than 2,210 eggs, 600 kilograms of flour, 278 kilograms of raisins and 55 kilograms of marzipan to create this mouth-watering delicacy. Moreover, 120 kilograms of lemons and 131 kilograms of oranges will be zested, giving a burst of citrus flavor.

The sixty-centimetre-long stollen loaves can be bought whole for AED100 or just AED5 for a delicious slice. Pre-sales will start from 7 December at Aspen by Kempinski, the hotel’s luxury lobby lounge.

The School of Analytics and Technology, which launched in June, is a key driver of the data driven culture. To harness all the available data across the business, these experts will be responsible for mining and analysing data in real-time, using sophisticated algorithms, before converting it into simple actionable insights.

The curriculum of the School of Analytics and Technology will comprise of 14 courses which cover three main pillars; data, analytics, and technology. The data modules will focus on the importance of data collection, classification and assessment, as well as sources of data and how to leverage them. The analytics modules will include the basics of coding and algorithms, and the visualisation of analytics. The modules on technology will be focused on developing the different dimensions of digital competence, including cybersecurity, digital disruption, artificial intelligence and the internet of things. The modules will include practical components, referred to as ‘labs’, to ensure hands-on learning. The curriculum will be rolled out to all 39,000 employees in the company, across all levels so that they better understand data and how it can be used. To date, more than 100 employees have received formal training.

Majid Al Futtaim’s School of Analytics has already welcomed guest speakers including Billy Beane, the inspiration for the Hollywood film, Moneyball, and he delivered a speech to employees about the power of analytics. Beane is famed for transforming how the world of baseball evaluates players after he used a unique analytical approach to player selection, management and trade, to lead the Oakland Athletics Major League Baseball team to four American League West titles.

Majid Al Futtaim further expands in Kenya with the opening of its third Carrefour hypermarket

Move illustrates Majid Al Futtaim’s plan to grow presence in Kenya and the greater East African region

Nairobi, Kenya, 2017-Oct-11 — /EPR Retail News/ — Majid Al Futtaim, the leading shopping mall, communities, retail and leisure pioneer across the Middle East, Africa and Asia, today (OCTOBER 05, 2017) announced that it will open its third hypermarket in Kenya, as part of its growth and expansion plans in Kenya.

The new hypermarket, at the popular Thika Road Mall “TRM” covers over 5000 square metres selling area and will cater for the growing population segment residing in Roysambu and Kasarani as well as those travelling along the busy Thika Road, towards Central and parts of Eastern Kenya. It brings the total number of Carrefour stores operated by Majid Al Futtaim, to 210 across 15 markets.

The new hypermarket will cover two floors of the mall whose construction was completed in 2013, with the projection of starting operations at the upper level of the mall next month, and having full operations on both floors by mid-2018.

  • Majid Al Futtaim also announced that construction of the AED2.6 billion City Centre Al Zahia is on track for opening in late 2020.

Muscat, Oman:

  • Al Mouj Muscat will soon launch Marsa Plaza, a vibrant and diverse platform for performing artists, as well as a public space that draws people together, creating strong social bonds at the neighbourhood. The platform will also feature two new food and beverage (F&B) outlets developed at the edge of the Plaza, in addition to the existing F&B offerings at the Walk, to create a sense of a traditional town square, offering a continuous animated frontage on all four sides.

Majid Al Futtaim harnesses Neuroscience to empower mixed-use development agenda

Dubai, UAE, 2017-Sep-13 — /EPR Retail News/ — Majid Al Futtaim, the leading shopping mall, communities, retail and leisure pioneer across the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, today unveiled the results of a first of its kind neuroscience study in the region, designed to identify the most powerful drivers behind emotional attachment to urban developments and communities.

Conducted by Neurons Inc and commissioned by Majid Al Futtaim; the UAE-based study used Electroencephalography (EEG) and Eye Tracking technology to measure how participants subconsciously as well as consciously responded to nearly 100 images of urban developments and landscapes from around the world. Over 1 million data points were then analysed to determine the findings.

Neuroscientists found the elements of everyday human activity (a visual focus in 80% of the 10 best performing images), greenery (70%), artistic features (50%) and bright colours (50%) were the most powerful drivers of emotional engagement with destinations and environments.

An emphasis was put on greenery, which was naturally landscaped and positioned in a way that provided a sense of human scale and privacy. The study also highlighted a subconscious preference for shades of blue and green in design and artistic features that people can interact with and embrace natural materials.

The strongest negative responses were recorded in images that displayed a visible lack of human interaction and natural landscapes. Dirt and damage were also shown to have an immediate negative and lasting impact on participants.

The announcement comes as the governments across the region; continue to place significant emphasis on transformative policies and practices for the real estate sector in a bid to drive economic diversity. In the UAE, both public and private sector entities are focused on enabling a nation-wide happiness agenda that seeks to enhance happiness and satisfaction for citizens and expats in the UAE through better services and infrastructure.

Through the study, neuroscientists identified a clear distinction between conscious and subconscious responses. For instance, when asked, respondents consciously indicated a liking for vibrant environments with highly active social interaction. However, when analysing subconscious brain activity, scientists found that simple, everyday human activities around homes and communities have a more positive and lasting impact on our minds.

“As destination creators, it is our vision and role to create mixed-used destinations with a heart and soul; where people can come together to celebrate life and create great memories with their loved ones, every day. The study helps us identify crucial elements that make for happy, healthy communities and become the foundation for how we bring our integrated retail, leisure and entertainment offering to design mixed-use destinations that drive holistic value for residents and surrounding communities,” he continued.

The neuroscience study was designed in collaboration with Neurons Inc to inform Majid Al Futtaim’s unique approach to placemaking – an approach to property planning, development and design that encourages emotional and functional value. Across the globe, the effective integration of placemaking principles has been seen to substantially enhance the commercial value of destinations and improve resident and visitor experiences.

Announced in collaboration with Marriott International (NASDAQ: MAR); the hotel development broke ground in June 2016 with the installation of the initial guide beam and has now completed the installation of the final concrete pour for the project.

Located in the historic heart of Dubai, the Aloft City Centre Deira, Dubai, offers tourists and the local community access to an all-star line-up of hotels surrounding the iconic City Centre Deira. The hotel development marks the 13th addition to the Majid Al Futtaim – Hotels portfolio and sixth hotel development in Deira and; introducing a distinctive destination experience to the vibrant heart of the city, powered on an integrated mix of world class hospitality, leading retail, leisure and entertainment offerings.

Set to open in Q1 2018, the hotel spans an area of 28,800 square meters and aims to redefine the upscale hospitality offering in the GCC. Laing O’Rourke Middle East (Holdings) Ltd., a leading international construction company was awarded the project contract and has successfully handled all site constraints and challenges around logistics and traffic management without any disruptions to the operations of the pioneering mall. The project was developed using pre-fabrication techniques with approximately 40% MEP units installed on-site. In addition to using off-site prefabrication techniques and systemized modulation, development teams have successfully completed 100% installation of over 300 plus bathroom pods. With topping out now complete, wall cladding work is well underway and will soon be followed by fitting out and finishing work to ensure expedite construction for launch in Q1 2018. Hotel project design and construction continues to meet LEED Gold requirements in line with Majid Al Futtaim’s sustainability standards.

NEW ALBANY, Ohio, 2017-Aug-29 — /EPR Retail News/ — Abercrombie & Fitch Co. (NYSE:ANF) today (Aug. 28, 2017) announced that in partnership with Majid Al Futtaim, the leading shopping mall, communities, retail and leisure pioneer across the Middle East, Africa and Asia, it will open the first Abercrombie & Fitch store, including a shop-in-shop for its abercrombie kids brand, at the Red Sea Mall in Jeddah.  The store will be located in the new extension of the mall, and when the brand opens in September, it will offer the Fall/Winter collection for men, women, and children.  The continued brand expansion is part of the franchise agreement between Majid Al Futtaim Fashion and Abercrombie & Fitch Co. announced in 2016.

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, 2017-Aug-04 — /EPR Retail News/ — Abu Dhabi’s retail and entertainment sectors are set for further growth following the announcement of the first-ever City Centre mall in the UAE capital. City Centre Al Jazira is a joint venture between Majid Al Futtaim, the Middle East, Africa and Asia’s leading shopping mall, communities, retail and leisure pioneer, and Al Jazira Sports and Cultural Club, a key Abu Dhabi football club.

Construction on the AED 1.4 billion City Centre Al Jazira, strategically located between the Airport Road and Al Muroor Road in the heart of Abu Dhabi, is set to begin in October 2017 and is scheduled for completion in early 2021. The centre will include 153 retail stores, a Carrefour Hypermarket, a 15-screen VOX Cinemas, Magic Planet family entertainment destination, a City Centre Clinic and a fitness centre, as well as indoor and alfresco dining choices. Majid Al Futtaim’s Ramadan campaign promotes kindness within the community by allowing people to make a difference through the donation of everyday essentials to families in need. Donation items can include clothes, toys, books, food and electronics, which will help families across the region experience the spirit of the holy month.

This year, the ‘Make A Difference’ campaign, has been developed in line with the ‘Year of Giving’ in the UAE, an initiative by UAE’s President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, which promotes strategies and programs intended to celebrate the virtues of giving and cement philanthropy in the heart of the nation.

Commencing on the first day of Ramadan and continuing into Eid, Majid Al Futtaim will have special donation boxes placed at its shopping malls, leisure and entertainment destinations, and Carrefour stores across Bahrain, Egypt, Lebanon, Oman, and the UAE. People can also follow the campaign on social media by using the #ShareTogether hashtag on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram.

Majid Al Futtaim employees will also embrace the spirit of giving by taking part in a number of initiatives during the holy month. In collaboration with Red Crescent, employees will help less fortunate children celebrate the joy of Ramadan by hosting a special iftar for them. Employees will also host an iftar for workers at Majid Al Futtaim construction sites and will prepare gift packs for them as part of the ‘We’ve Got Your Back’ campaign. Ahead of the distribution of donated items at the end of the campaign, employees will gather with their families to fill the Eid boxes with the donations made.

Majid Al Futtaim will partner with Fetchr, the delivery service application, to make the donation process more seamless in the UAE. The partnership will enable customers to contribute to the ‘Make A Difference’ campaign, as Fetchr has committed to picking up donations and delivering them to Majid Al Futtaim destinations free of charge. Customers need to download the application and place a ‘send’ order using the standard service. They should then enter the pickup location and time, and enter the promo-code ‘Donate’ for free collection and delivery.

Across the region, Majid Al Futtaim is once again partnering with charitable organisations such as the Islamic Association in Bahrain, Ahl Masrin Egypt, Bassma and Al-Mabarrat Association in Lebanon, Dar Al-Atta in Oman, and Red Crescent in the UAE, ensuring timely and appropriate distribution of all donated goods through their humanitarian network during Ramadan. Last year, more than 13,000 people contributed more than 63,000 books, 46,500 toys, and 52,000 kilograms of clothes through the campaign and the company also received USD 84,868 (AED 311,699) in cash donations from customers.

Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, 2017-May-10 — /EPR Retail News/ — Majid Al Futtaim, the leading shopping mall, communities, retail and leisure pioneer across the Middle East, Africa and Asia, today (MAY 9, 2017) officially broke ground on what will be the company’s largest mall within the UAE’s third-largest emirate – City Centre Al Zahia in Sharjah. Once complete, City Centre Al Zahia will be a valuable addition to the powerful City Centre brand portfolio.

Strategically located at the intersection of Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and University Road, City Centre Al Zahia is a super-regional mall of 136,200 sqm of gross leasable area.

The super-regional mall will address the shopping and leisure needs of the residents of Sharjah, Northern Emirates and Al Zahia, an award-winning residential destination with six themed parks, leisure facilities and featuring 2,270 homes ranging from 3, 4 and 5 bedroom villas and townhouses to apartments of various sizes. When it opens in 2020, City Centre Al Zahia will serve a trade area of more than 1.9M people, as well as attracting residents of neighbouring Northern Emirates.

With a distinctive lantern-like design, City Centre Al Zahia’s architectural detailing echoes the annual Sharjah Light Festival.  In addition, the external food and beverage precinct, located at the mall’s entrance and with covered al fresco seating, will enhance Sharjah’s dining options for residents and tourists.  City Centre Al Zahia will have a contemporary, light-filled aesthetic driven by Majid Al Futtaim’s commitment to sustainable, environmentally-sound building practices.

City Centre Al Zahia’s ground-breaking comes following Majid Al Futtaim’s recent announcement that will see the company increase its total investment in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) by AED 30 billion by 2026, taking its total investment in the country to AED 48 billion. As part of its strategic development plan, Majid Al Futtaim continues to invest in the redevelopment of its existing assets in the Northern Emirates.

The expansion plans for City Centre Sharjah and City Centre Ajman are also key elements of Majid Al Futtaim’s overall UAE growth strategy announced in June 2016. City Centre Sharjah, one of the emirate’s largest and leading shopping destinations, is currently undergoing a AED 260 million redevelopment initiative set for completion in the last quarter of 2017. A comprehensive redevelopment of City Centre Ajman will see the mall almost double in size, from 29,000 to 52,000 sqm.  With an estimated cost of AED 600 million, the mall’s expansion is anticipated to conclude in the third quarter of 2017, followed by an additional refurbishment and redemising of the existing mall.

Following the opening of City Centre Me’aisem in September 2015 and City Centre Al Shindagha in 2016, and the successful delivery of Mall of the Emirates’ Evolution 2015 expansion initiative, City Centre Al Zahia is Majid Al Futtaim’s fourth major project to be announced in the UAE within the past 18 months.

Dubai, UAE, 2017-Apr-19 — /EPR Retail News/ — Majid Al Futtaim, the leading shopping mall, communities, retail and leisure pioneer across the Middle East, Africa and Asia, has today ( APRIL 18, 2017) launched its Net Positive strategy in the presence of Dr. Thani Ahmad Al Zeyoudi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment. The strategy aims to significantly reduce the company’s water consumption and carbon emissions to the extent that it puts more back into the environment than it takes out, resulting in a positive corporate footprint by 2040.

Dr. Thani Ahmad Al Zeyoudi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment commented: “Majid Al Futtaim’s Net Positive commitment is a landmark step in helping to create a more sustainable future for our region. The strategy is in line with the UAE Green Agenda and the UAE National Climate Change Plan to address solutions to pressing current and future environmental challenges. Collaboration with the private sector is key to realising our sustainability goals and promoting a shared responsibility for our environment.”

As part of its Net Positive strategy, Majid Al Futtaim will measure current carbon and water impact and implement measures to reduce it through projects focused on decreasing carbon emissions and water consumption at all its assets across the region. These projects will range from small scale energy efficiency measures and on-site renewable energy installations to on-site rainwater harvesting and grey water recycling. In the long term, Majid Al Futtaim will create positive impact by providing more accessible and better quality water to local communities where it has extracted water for business purposes.

DUBAI, UAE, 2017-Mar-10 — /EPR Retail News/ — Majid Al Futtaim, the leading shopping mall, communities, retail and leisure pioneer across the Middle East, Africa and Asia, today launched a new regional marketing campaign designed to inspire people to spend more quality time with loved ones. The campaign is based on an insight confirmed by research commissioned by the company across the region revealing people in the Middle East feel that spending quality time with friends and family is key to their happiness but they don’t prioritise it enough.

The study surveyed over 1,000 people in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It revealed that nearly everyone (93%) in the country is happiest when spending quality time with friends and family, however, one third (30%) spend just five hours or less a week doing so. The research also showed half (46%) of residents in the emirates recognise that they waste at least two weekends per month by not spending quality time with friends and family, while 48% turn down offers to meet loved ones at least twice a month. Four fifths (81%) of people surveyed agreed they need to prioritise more time for the people they love.

We decided to respond to this insight by focusing our new marketing campaign on motivating couples, friends and families to spend time together and celebrate life to its fullest – a message that perfectly captures our vision of creating great moments for everyone, everyday.”

Majid Al Futtaim’s new campaign, ‘Create Great Moments Together’, is a subtle message asking people to do something that will make a difference to their life. It is a little reminder that the greatest moments in life come from experiencing, sharing and discovering life together, and that is what happiness is made of.

The campaign achieves its goal by bringing to life the many ways people express their happiness when enjoying special moments with family and friends. It will be highly visible across the region through mediums including outdoor advertising, social media, radio, and a television commercial. The commercial will be featured on television stations across the Middle east from today.
