Hy-Vee pharmacies in Iowa, Missouri, South Dakota and Wisconsin now offer naloxone without a prescription

West Des Moines, Iowa, 2017-May-12 — /EPR Retail News/ — To assist in the national crisis concerning opioid overdoses, Hy-Vee, Inc., announced today (May 10, 2017) that it now offers naloxone to customers without a prescription in four of the eight states where it has pharmacies.

All Hy-Vee pharmacy locations in Iowa, Missouri, South Dakota and Wisconsin offer naloxone without a prescription. The effort is meant to help prevent opioid-related deaths. While naloxone is known to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, the medication has no effect if opioids are absent.

“We know the availability of this medication has the potential to save lives,” said Kristin Williams, senior vice president and chief health officer at Hy-Vee. “It’s vital that we do everything we can to assist those with a loved one who may encounter an opioid overdose by combining medications or by accidentally taking too much of a medication, being unaware of the life-threatening result.”

Naloxone is available at Hy-Vee pharmacies in nasal spray, as well as injection form by request.

Hy-Vee pharmacists will also ensure that patients and their family members understand how to recognize signs of an opioid overdose and how to administer the medication. While naloxone is not a cure for an opioid overdose, it can assist an individual until emergency treatment is available and long-term treatment is provided.

Naloxone can be administered to any person who has overdosed on a wide range of opioids, including hydrocodone, oxycodone, morphine and codeine, as well as heroin. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, opioids killed more than 33,000 people in 2015, more than any year on record. Nearly half of all opioid overdose deaths involve a prescription opioid.

Pharmacists in South Dakota and Missouri can dispense naloxone without a prescription through a physician-signed protocol with a designated pharmacy or pharmacy chain. The Iowa Board of Pharmacy and Wisconsin Pharmacy Examining Board have both implemented administrative rules outlining procedures and training requirements for participating pharmacies. Prior to these efforts in these states, the only way for individuals to obtain naloxone was through their doctor or other prescriber, followed by a trip to the pharmacy for the drug.

CVS Pharmacy to build new distribution center at the Skyport Industrial Park in Kansas City, Mo

America’s leading retail pharmacy plans to open 762,000 sq. ft. center in 2018

KANSAS CITY, Mo, 2016-Dec-19 — /EPR Retail News/ — Gov. Jay Nixon today (December 14, 2016) announced that major retailor CVS Pharmacy will build a new 762,000 sq. ft. distribution center in Kansas City, Mo, at the Skyport Industrial Park. The company’s expansion is expected to create more than 360 new jobs in the region.

“Missouri recently reached record employment, with more folks back at work in our state than ever before,” Gov. Nixon said. “Today’s announcement by CVS Pharmacy to create 360 new jobs in Kansas City will continue this momentum, and is great news for area families. Once again, Missouri has shown the nation that we are open for business with a strong and growing economy.”

With access to key road systems in the region, the planned distribution center will support the service and fulfillment needs of more than 370 CVS Pharmacy stores throughout the Midwest. CVS Pharmacy expects to break ground on the 71-acre property in January 2017 and immediately start construction on the facility. The new distribution center is expected to begin operations in 2018.

“This new distribution center is an integral part of CVS Pharmacy’s continued growth as a leading pharmacy, health and beauty destination,” said Kevin Hourican, Executive Vice President, Pharmacy Services & Supply Chain, CVS Health. “The key combination of a high-quality workforce and a centralized location will allow us to better serve the growing needs of our customers throughout the Midwest and beyond.  As a result of our new Midwest distribution center, our delivery drivers will drive hundreds of thousands fewer miles each year to deliver product to our stores, significantly reducing carbon emissions and improving highway safety.”

The new distribution center is expected to add more than 360 new jobs to the Kansas City area, as well as an additional 70 to 100 jobs that will be outsourced to local businesses.  It adds to CVS Pharmacy’s network of 18 distribution centers nationwide.

“CVS’ decision to locate this regional distribution center in Kansas City affirms the transportation infrastructure advantages of this region and the competitive costs for distributing to the greater Midwest from here,” said Chris Gutierrez, President, KC SmartPort, the authority on logistics and opportunities in the 18-county, bi-state Kansas City region.

“On behalf of CVS Pharmacy, we are thrilled to grow our presence in the Kansas City business community. This new location will help us enhance support for our expanding distribution needs in the Midwestern market,” said Ron Link, Senior Vice President of Logistics at CVS Pharmacy.  “We want to thank state and local officials for their cooperation and support during our site selection process.”

“Kansas City is experiencing a large industrial boom and continues to be center of choice for regional and national distribution due to our region’s abundant multi-modal transportation network,” said Kansas City Area Development Council President and CEO Tim Cowden. “We are pleased that CVS Pharmacy chose the KC region and look forward to its future success.”

Missouri is helping the company recruit candidates for the new positions which are expected to be hired starting in early 2018. Additionally, Kansas City approved the company for local personal property tax abatement. The Missouri Partnership also assisted with the company’s expansion to the state.

Opioid overdose-reversal drug naloxone now available in CVS pharmacies in Alabama, Alaska, Illinois, Missouri and West Virginia

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2016-Oct-03 — /EPR Retail News/ — CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) today (September 29, 2016) announced it has expanded access to the opioid overdose-reversal drug naloxone in Alabama, Alaska, Illinois, Missouri and West Virginia, allowing CVS Pharmacy patients to access the medication without an individual prescription. In total, CVS Pharmacy patients in 36 states now have increased access to the life-saving opioid overdose-reversal drug. CVS Health’s naloxone program establishes a standing order with a physician in the state or utilizes pharmacists’ prescriptive authority to permit CVS Pharmacists to dispense naloxone to patients without an individual prescription. Pharmacists in these five states began dispensing the medication this week.

“Naloxone is a safe and effective antidote to opioid overdose and by expanding availability of this medication, we can save lives and give more people a chance to get the help they need for recovery,” said Tom Davis, RPh, Vice President of Pharmacy Professional Practices at CVS Pharmacy. “By establishing a physician-authorized standing order that allows our pharmacies to dispense naloxone to patients without an individual prescription, we strengthen our commitment to helping the communities we serve begin to address the challenges of prescription drug abuse.”

“Expanding access to the overdose-reversal drug naloxone is a critical part of our national strategy to stop the prescription drug and heroin overdose epidemic along with effective prevention, treatment, and enforcement,” said Michael Botticelli, Director of National Drug Control Policy. “Thanks to efforts on naloxone like those announced today by CVS Health, more Americans will have access to this lifesaving drug.”

The move to expand access to naloxone builds on CVS Health’s longstanding commitment to help communities address and prevent drug abuse through education, outreach and safe medication disposal. CVS Health’s commitment to drug abuse prevention education extends from online resources launched for patients visiting CVS.com to two robust youth prevention programs. Launched last year, CVS Health’s Pharmacists Teach program gives its pharmacists the opportunity to volunteer to speak to high school health classes about the dangers of drug abuse. More than 100,000 students have already been part of the program. Recently, the company also announced a partnership with DoSomething.org to create a peer-to-peer prevention and intervention program delivered to young people via text message and online.

CVS Health has also joined with the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids to create the Medication Disposal for Safer Communities Program, which has donated more than 600 drug disposal units to police departments around the country. The program gives members of the community a safe and environmentally friendly way to dispose of unwanted medication and has already collected more than 47 metric tons of prescription drugs.

“CVS Health has been a leader in the work of helping communities prevent prescription drug abuse,” said Marcia Lee Taylor, President and CEO, Partnership for Drug-Free Kids. “In addition to proper disposal of unwanted medication, increasing access to naloxone is a critical public health priority that allows patients and their families to prevent opioid fatalities and recognize when people need help working towards recovery from the disease of addiction.”

With the addition of the five new states where CVS Pharmacy locations began dispensing naloxone to patients without a prescription this week, CVS Pharmacy locations in the following 36 states now offer naloxone: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas,California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky,Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana,New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota,Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont,Virginia, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin. CVS Health also plans to further expand its naloxone program to other states in the coming months.
