Walgreens partners with Netflix actor Brandon Larracuente to launch “#ItEndsWithUs” campaign to raise awareness on opioid epidemic

Netflix actor Brandon Larracuente to announce campaign at WE Day UN in New York

NEW YORK, 2017-Sep-25 — /EPR Retail News/ — Today (20 September 2017), Walgreens, one of the nation’s largest drugstore chains, launches its new campaign “#ItEndsWithUs” to educate teens nationwide on the opioid epidemic. The campaign will be unveiled by actor Brandon Larracuente from Netflix’s popular series “13 Reasons Why” and “Bloodline.” Larracuente, who lost a close friend to the opioid epidemic, will speak to an audience of more than 6,000 youth at the WE Day UN in New York event at Madison Square Garden.

“I have personally been affected by the opioid epidemic. My friend was only 19 when she died and it only took one wrong, risk-taking decision to cost her, her life,” said Larracuente. “I’m honored to work with Walgreens to raise awareness of the issue with my generation and let them know of the resources the company has made available to customers nationwide. This epidemic ends with our generation.”

The #ItEndsWithUs campaign provides teens with resources and positive steps they can take in their community, which are all available at the #ItEndsWithUs hub at www.walgreens.com/itendswithus. Once there, visitors are greeted with a message from Larracuente and a personal testimonial from Francesca Paparone, a young woman who overcame her addiction and is now working with Walgreens to raise awareness. Together, both Paparone and Larracuente will speak to Walgreens safe medication disposal program that began in 2016 in their messages.

The safe medication disposal kiosks allow individuals to safely and conveniently dispose of their unwanted, unused or expired prescriptions, including controlled substances, and over-the-counter medications, year-round at no cost. The kiosks at Walgreens pharmacies are available during regular pharmacy hours and offer one of the best ways to ensure medications are not accidentally used or intentionally misused by someone else. Most people who misuse prescription drugs first obtain them from a family member or friend, often from a home medicine cabinet.

Kiosks are available in more than 600 pharmacies across 45 states and the District of Columbia; that’s more than 100 kiosks above the program’s original goal. In its first year, the program has resulted in the collection and disposal of 72 tons of unwanted medication, or the equivalent weight of about 40 midsize cars.

The #ItEndsWithUs campaign launches at a time when the national opioid crisis has escalated into an epidemic of addiction and overdose. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), overdose deaths among 15-to-19-year-olds spiked more than 19 percent between 2014 and 2015. The CDC also found that nearly half of all opioid overdose deaths involve a prescription opioid.

Walgreens will continue to raise awareness around the opioid epidemic at upcoming WE Day events in 2018, with the help of Larracuente engaging teens across the country. For more information about the #ItEndsWithUs campaign and how to get involved, visit www.walgreens.com/itendswithus.

Netflix reveals Orange is the New Black amongst most re-watched original series

Beverly Hills, Calif., 2016-Jun-20 — /EPR Retail News/ — Today, Netflix reveals Orange is the New Black is one of its most re-watched original series. Examining viewing in over 190 countries, Netflix found more than half (53%)* of Orange viewers have re-watched at least one full season of the acclaimed series since its debut in 2013. Not surprisingly, this re-watching behavior peaks each June in anticipation of the new season, this year being no exception.

In advance of the Orange is the New Black season 4 debut – arriving worldwide Friday, June 17 – Netflix also surveyed** fans around the world to see how they plan to prepare for their return to Litchfield.

Of viewers polled, nearly a quarter (21%) plan to re-watch the previous season while 41% plan to re-watch the entire series – all 36 episodes. They’re eager to serve their time too with 54% planning to re-watch this weekend or sooner, and fans are even willing to give-up making their bed (30%), cleaning the house (36%) and cooking (10%) in order to have more time to watch .

Overall, most plan to re-watch without incriminating others – 36% prefer to re-watch solo, 8% with their pets and 12% with a table full of snacks (be careful with the pie). Those who prefer to have partners in crime will re-watch with their significant other (25%) or friends (14%). The majority of re-watching lock downs will take place in the living room (43%) followed by the bedroom (41%) – no one chose the SHU.

The art of re-watching takes both a practical and emotional form. Top reasons for re-watching include looking for possible foreshadowing in previous story lines (25%) and reliving moments with favorite characters (29%). However, for others (25%) it’s as simple as Orange is the New Black being their favorite show and they just can’t get enough.

For those who only have time for a shorter sentence – like the 23% of respondents who plan to re-watch just a few episodes – Netflix also released the series most re-watched episodes. As expected, viewers prefer to re-indulge in the last three episodes of a season, but the one that remains supreme is, of course, Season 1, Episode 1 – you never forget your first time:

Season 1:

  • Episode 1 – “I wasn’t ready”
Sentenced to fifteen months for a crime committed in her youth, Piper Chapman leaves her supportive fiance Larry for her new home: a woman’s prison.
  • Episode 12 – “Fool me once”
Painful truths reorient several relationships and careers: Pennsatucky feels disrespected by Piper; Larry gives a revealing radio interview.
  • Episode 13 – “Can’t fix crazy”
Red’s scheme to reclaim her kitchen backfires; the inmates stage a Christmas pageant; Piper’s plans unravel even as she realizes her life is in jeopardy,

Season 2:

  • Episode 11 – “Take a break from your values”
Piper is shocked at an unexpected change in her status; Soso’s hunger strike attracts new support that takes on a religious fervor.
  • Episode 12 – “It was the change”
Tensions run high as a prison power outage forces several issues to come to light; Piper finds herself compromised and is forced to think on her feet.
  • Episode 13 – “We have manners. We’re polite”
Several futures hang in the balance as the inmates face and confront their worst nightmares: Life will never be the same again.

Season 3:

  • Episode 11 – “We can be heroes”
Caputo and Piper confront labor issues. A miracle occurs in Norma’s group. Crazy Eyes’ erotica winds up in the hands of the staff.
  • Episode 12 – “Don’t make me come back there”
Daya goes into labor. Sophia suffers a hate crime. Stella helps Piper with a business snag. Taystee takes on a new role.
  • Episode 13 – “Trust no bitch”
Miracles and conversions occur, but Piper and Caputo know that some situations can’t be dealt with through spiritual means.

METHODOLOGY

*Data reflective of global accounts who have completed watching Orange is the New Black and have re-watched at least one season of the series.

**The survey was conducted by Google Consumer Surveys, June 2, 2016 – June 10, 2016 and based on 1,613 responses. The sample was the national adult internet population in the US, Mexico, UK and Canada. Survey respondents must have confirmed their intent to watch and prepare for season 4 of Orange is the New Black to participate. Overall RMSE score is 4.84%.

Netflix unveils The Binge Scale revealing which shows we devour and which we savor

Los Gatos, CA, 2016-Jun-09 — /EPR Retail News/ — Members blow through Breaking Bad, Orange is the New Black and The Walking Dead; are captivated by House of Cards, Narcos, Bloodline and Mad Men

Netflix members around the world are making their own rules when it comes to watching TV. Instead of one episode per week, Netflix members choose to binge watch their way through a series – that is, on average, finishing an entire season in one week. Though binge watching is clearly the new normal, not all series are enjoyed the same way. Today Netflix unveils The Binge Scale, revealing which shows we devour and which we savor.

Netflix examined global viewing* of more than 100 serialized TV series across more than 190 countries and found when members are focused on finishing a series, they watch a little over two hours a day to complete a season. When organizing series in relation to this benchmark, interesting patterns emerge, ranging from high energy narratives that are devoured to thought-provoking dramas that are savored.

Series like Sense8, Orphan Black** and The 100 grab you, assault your senses, and as The Binge Scale shows, make it hard to pull away. The classic elements of horror and thrillers go straight for the gut, pushing the placement of series like The Walking Dead, American Horror Story and The Fall towards the devour end of the scale. Likewise, comedies with a dramatic bent, like Orange is the New Black, Nurse Jackie and Grace and Frankie, seem to tickle our fancy and make it easy to say ‘just one more.’

It’s no surprise that complex narratives, like that of House of Cards and Bloodline, are indulged at an unhurried pace. Nor that viewers take care to appreciate the details of dramas set in bygone eras, like Peaky Blinders and Mad Men. Maybe less obvious are irreverent comedies like BoJack Horseman, Love and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. But the societal commentary that powers their densely layered comedy paired with characters that are as flawed as they are entertaining allow them to be savored.

“As The Binge Scale indicates, the viewing experience of a series can range from the emotional to the thought-provoking,” said Cindy Holland, Vice President of Original Content at Netflix. “Netflix helps you to find a series to binge no matter your mood or occasion, and the freedom to watch that series at your own pace – whether that’s to appreciate the drama of Bloodline or power through Orange is the New Black.”

THE NETFLIX BINGE SCALE** (Based on global viewing data)

SAVOR

  • Irreverent Comedies:
    • Arrested Development, BoJack Horseman, Club de Cuervos, F is for Family, Love, Summer Heights High, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Wet Hot American Summer
  • Political Dramas
    • Homeland, House of Cards, Occupied, The Good Wife, The West Wing
  • Historical Dramas
    • Mad Men, Narcos, Peaky Blinders, The Americans
  • Superhero Drama
    • Gotham, Marvel’s Daredevil, Marvel’s Jessica Jones, The Flash
  • Crime Dramas
    • Better Call Saul, Bloodline, Fargo, The Blacklist, The Bridge, Twin Peaks
  • Dramatic Comedies
    • Flaked, Grace & Frankie, Nurse Jackie, Orange is the New Black, Parenthood, Rescue Me, Weeds
  • Action & Adventure
    • 24, Arrow, La Reina del Sur, Marco Polo, Outlander, Prison Break, The Last Kingdom, Turn, Vikings
  • Sci-Fi
    • Ascension, Between, Heroes, Orphan Black, Sense8, The 100, The 4400, Under the Dome
  • Horror
    • American Horror Story, Hemlock Grove, Penny Dreadful, Scream, The Walking Dead, Z Nation
  • Thriller
    • Bates Motel, Breaking Bad, Dexter, Sons of Anarchy, The Fall, The Following, The Killing

DEVOUR

*METHODOLOGY

Netflix analyzed more than 100 serialized TV series across more than 190 countries between October 2015 and May 2016. The research examined member completion of the first season for all series. Data was only included for accounts that fully completed the season. Completion rates were organized into days and hours. The global median days to complete the first season of these series was five days. The median hours per session for completers overall was two hours and ten minutes. Series viewed less than two hours per day were identified as ‘savored.’ Series viewed more than two hours per day were identified as ‘devoured.’ Series were not restricted by launch dates, runtime or number of episodes. Where a series falls on The Netflix Binge Scale has no relation to viewership.

Described by critics as “one of the best young-adult films to come out of France in recent years,” the funny, often suspenseful and emotional drama tells the story of Dounia, a tough, but naive teenager who sees getting rich or dying trying as her most viable option. Set in a ghetto near Paris where drugs and religion reign supreme, Dounia is hungry for her share of power and success. Enlisting the help of her best friend she decides to follow the footsteps of a respected dealer. When Dounia meets a young sensuous dancer, her life takes a surprising turn.

Houda Benyamina’s directorial debut received rave reviews from critics and was awarded the Caméra d’Or, an award of the Cannes Film Festival for the best first feature film presented in one of the event’s selections. Critics heap praise on Oulaya Amamra’s “breakout” performance as Dounia.

Netflix to premiere original ten-part documentary crime series Making a Murderer on December 18, 2015

The Most Compelling American Crime Story You’ve Never Heard Of…

Beverly Hills, Calif., 2015-11-10 — /EPR Retail News/ — Netflix, the world’s leading Internet TV network, will premiere a captivating original ten-part documentary crime series Making a Murderer on December 18, 2015 exclusively to Netflix members worldwide.

Inspired by a newspaper article from 2005, directors Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos have spent the last decade documenting an unprecedented real-life thriller that spans more than thirty years. Set in America’s Heartland, Making a Murderer follows the harrowing story of Steven Avery, an outsider from the wrong side of the tracks, convicted and later exonerated of a brutal assault. His release triggered major criminal justice reform legislation, and he filed a lawsuit that threatened to expose corruption in local law enforcement and award him millions of dollars. But in the midst of his very public civil case, he suddenly finds himself the prime suspect in a grisly new crime.

The series takes viewers inside a riveting, high-stakes criminal case where reputation is everything and things are never as they appear. The filmmakers have documented every angle of the story, following the second investigation and ensuing trial of the accused, petitioning the court to avoid having to turn over their footage, gathering archival materials, and interviewing those closest to the case.

“There are an unbelievable number of twists and turns in the story arc of Making a Murderer, it feels like it has to be fictional,” said Lisa Nishimura, Netflix VP of Original Documentary Programming. “Ricciardi and Demos have navigated very complex terrain and skillfully woven together an incredible series that leaves you feeling like you’re right in the middle of the action.”

“If we had not been there to witness these events we would have trouble believing they actually occurred. Our goal has always been to share that experience with viewers. Our partnership with Netflix has allowed us to tell this story in a way that wouldn’t have been possible anywhere else,” said directors Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos.

Making a Murderer examines allegations of police and prosecutorial misconduct, evidence tampering and witness coercion. The filmmakers look at what went wrong in the first case and question whether scientific advances and legislative reforms over the past three decades have gotten us any closer to delivering truth and justice in the system.

Netflix will present a special preview of the first two episodes of Making a Murderer at the DOC NYC film festival on Friday, November 13.

Making a Murderer is the latest project in Netflix’s slate of original documentary and docu-series programming, including the Oscar-nominated films The Square and Virunga as well as What Happened, Miss Simone?, Winter on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom and Chef’s Table.

10 Episode Adaptation of Suburra Film will premiere globally on Netflix in 2017

  • 10 Episode Adaptation of Suburra Film First On Netflix Worldwide In 2017
  • Suburra Feature To Debut On Netflix In North and Latin America Same Day As Theatrical PremiereOct 05, 2015

ROME and BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., 2015-10-5 — /EPR Retail News/ — Suburra, a dark, gripping ten episode organised crime series set on the Roman coast will premiere globally on Netflix in 2017.

The first Italian production from Netflix, the world’s leading Internet TV Network, will be created by Cattleya, the independent film and television producer behind successful TV productions including Gomorrah the series and Romanzo Criminale, in collaboration with RAI, the Italian public service broadcaster. Suburra is a captivating story that involves politics, the Vatican, the mafia, corruption, money laundering, drugs and prostitution.

Following the success of Gomorrah and Romanzo Criminale, the saga of Suburra starts with a feature film slated to be in theatres throughout Italy on Oct. 14. Netflix will debut the film, directed by Stefano Sollima, the same day in the Americas with Italy following in May 2016.

The film, produced by Cattleya with Rai Cinema, tells the story of a grueling battle over a seaside town outside of Rome which is to be developed into a gambling paradise. The story involves a corrupt member of Parliament, Filippo Malgradi (Pierfrancesco Favino), Number 8 (Alessandro Borghi), the head of a powerful family that runs the territory, and Sebastiano (Elio Germano), a young event organizer, as well as corrupt religious leaders and rival Mafiosi, including the “Samurai” (Claudio Amendola) who represents the most feared faction of Roman organized crime, all revealing an endemic system of corruption and rampant illegality on an international scale.

“Being on Netflix means a lot to me,” said film director Sollima. “Not only will my film be part of a selection of high-quality feature films and groundbreaking TV series of which I am a huge fan, but it will also have the opportunity to reach a wide international public. I am proud and excited that on Oct. 14th, Suburra will be seen in the Americas, simultaneously with its release in Italian theaters”.

Cattleya has already begun development of the series, production is planned to start in the second half of 2016. Following the example of Gomorrah, which had theatrical success worldwide with the subsequent series airing around the globe, the series of Suburra will premiere on Netflix everywhere Netflix is available. RAI will air the series after the debut on Netflix in Italy.

“Netflix has revolutionized how we watch television and what we watch. To partner with them is an extraordinary opportunity for Cattleya to engage audiences around the world and to contribute to further developing the medium,” said Cattleya founder Riccardo Tozzi.

“RAI is proud to partner with Netflix, the Internet TV leader, for the production of the Suburra TV series” said RAI’s Director General Antonio Campo Dall’Orto.‎ “This collaboration demonstrates our new strategic direction to innovate and compete in Italy and abroad. Television is transforming, we need to stay on the forefront and redefine our role. The Suburra series testifies to the strength of the growing Italian production industry, from cinema to fiction, and its ability to be a player at the highest international level.”

“Suburra is an enthralling story that will appeal to Netflix members in Italy and worldwide,” said Erik Barmack, vice president at Netflix. “We are thrilled to partner with RAI and Cattleya and to be working with some of the best storytellers in Italy to deliver not only their film but also a series that will be among the best of television.”

Giancarlo De Cataldo and Carlo Bonini, authors of the Suburra book, added: “Our novel is a journey into the black heart of Rome, uncovering and bringing to light many of the current scandals, well in advance of their making headlines in the international press, from the New York Times to the BBC to the Guardian. Now, thanks to Stefano Sollima’s feature, to Netflix and to Cattleya we are happy to know that our investigation will reach an even larger global audience.”

Suburra is part of the rapidly expanding Netflix Original programming effort that brings high quality, exclusive programming from around the world to its members everywhere.

Amazon Fire TV—Tiny Box, Huge Performance—¥12,980
The new Amazon Fire TV is a small yet powerful box that plugs into your HDTV and delivers fast access to movies, TV shows, songs, games, and more.

Built for Speed
Fire TV features a 64-bit, quad-core processor and a dedicated graphics engine for lightning-fast graphics and excellent fluidity. Fire TV comes with 2GB of memory, so content loads faster and games run smoother.

True-to-Life Picture Quality with 4K Ultra HD
4K Ultra HD is the next generation of entertainment and delivers a more realistic entertainment experience with 4x the resolution of 1080p. Amazon Fire TV is the only streaming media player available with support for 4K Ultra HD content. With 4K support for Prime Video, Amazon Video, and Netflix, Fire TV also provides access to more 4K Ultra HD movies than any other device.

Better HD Video Quality for More Customers
The new Amazon Fire TV is built to support High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). In the coming months, the new Amazon Fire TV will deliver more 1080p high-definition streams from Amazon Video than ever before with HEVC—even if you don’t own a 4K TV. HEVC is roughly 2x more efficient at encoding video than the current industry standard, H.264, so less bandwidth is needed to deliver high-quality video streams. As a result, the majority of Fire TV customers will now get to experience high-quality, 1080p TV shows and movies from Amazon Video.

Audio from Dolby, the Standard in Home Audio
With Dolby Audio, enjoy rich, cinematic surround sound via HDMI to your TV or AV receiver. Plus, Dolby enhances the Bluetooth headphone support on Fire TV, so you get Dolby’s virtual surround sound, consistent quality, and enhanced volume leveling while listening to your favorite movie or TV show with headphones.

Powerful Wi-Fi Performance
Fire TV features the latest standard in Wi-Fi technology—802.11ac, dual-antenna, dual-band with MIMO—which gives you faster throughput and longer range for better performance, even if your router is located in another part of the house.

Designed to Disappear
Fire TV is designed to disappear. It is 17.8 mm thin and 115 mm wide, so it is easy to hide. Fire TV has a fan-less design and no hard drive, so it is silent even when running the most demanding applications.

Expandable microSD Storage
In addition to the 8GB of on-device storage, Fire TV offers expandable storage via microSD card slot for up to 128GB of additional storage for downloaded apps and games.

Amazon Fire TV Game Controller
You can play fun casual or high intensity games on Fire TV using the included remote control. You can also choose to play games with the Fire TV Game Controller, which enables more high-intensity and complex gaming. Simple and comfortable to use for hours, the Fire game controller features an ergonomic design, an audio jack for Dolby-enhanced private listening, and instant voice search with a built-in microphone. Plus, the new Game Controller gives you up to 90 hours of battery life on just one set of AA batteries without headphones.

Fire TV Stick—Most Powerful Streaming Stick
Amazon today also introduced Fire TV Stick in Japan, the fastest-selling Amazon device ever. Fire TV Stick is available in two configurations—a powerful, low cost option for ¥4,980 and an incredibly convenient voice search option for ¥6,480.

Tiny Device, Simple Remote
Fire TV Stick is incredibly small—roughly the size of a pack of gum—and can disappear behind your TV. The new Fire TV Stick with Voice Remote brings together the portability of the Fire TV Stick, the simple design of the Fire TV Stick Voice Remote, and the convenience of voice search.

Powerful Performance
Fire TV Stick is the most powerful streaming media stick. Fire TV Stick has a dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, Dolby Audio, 8GB on-device storage and better Wi-Fi performance than any other streaming media stick.

Connect to Your Hotel or Dorm Room Wi-Fi
Take your favorite movies, TV shows, games, and more with you away from home—Fire TV Stick is the only streaming media stick to enable you to connect to Wi-Fi that requires web authentication—this includes Wi-Fi at most major hotels, as well as some universities.

Features of the Fire TV Family
Say It, Watch It with Voice Search that Actually Works
Simply speak the name of a movie, TV show, actor, director, or genre into the Fire TV Voice Remote and you’re done. No more hunting and pecking in an alphabet grid to find your favorite TV shows and movies.

Instant Streaming with ASAP
You shouldn’t have to wait 10 seconds for a video to buffer after you press “Play”—it should start immediately. Based on your Watchlist and recommendations, the new ASAP (Advanced Streaming and Prediction) feature predicts which movies and TV episodes you’ll want to watch and prepares them for playback before you even hit play. This feature is smart—it is personalized based on your viewing habits and adapts as those habits change. The caching predictions get better over time, so ASAP will continuously improve as you use Fire TV.

Simple and Easy to Use
Fire TV comes automatically pre-registered, so you can immediately get started. No complicated set-up, no hassle—just plug it in and start watching. Fire TV features an intuitive user interface that is easily navigated with a simple remote control. All of your previously purchased movies and TV shows from Amazon, as well as personalized recommendations and your Watchlist, will be there waiting for you when you turn on Fire TV.

Easiest Way to Get Customer Service with Mayday Screen Sharing
Mayday Screen Sharing brings Mayday-powered customer service to the Fire TV streaming box, delivering 24×7, 365 days-a-year technical assistance—for free. When you call customer service by phone, the Amazon expert can remotely connect to your Fire TV—with your permission—to answer any questions you may have or to help troubleshoot. They can draw on the screen, walk you through how to do something, or do it for you—whatever works best.

Photos on your big-screen
Fire TV makes it easy to view your photos and personal videos on your TV. You can set up and play slide shows, find specific photos, and choose your favorite album for the screen-saver on Fire TV. Photos or videos you take on your phone or tablet can be automatically uploaded to Amazon Cloud Drive, so they appear on your Fire TV within seconds.

Music in Your Living Room
With Fire TV devices, you can listen to music from Amazon Music. When you purchase music from Amazon, it will be stored automatically in the Music tab on Fire TV, and available on your phone or tablet.

Fling TV Shows and Movies and Display Mirroring
Fling services like YouTube or Netflix from your Android phone or iPhone. Or, share whatever is on your small screen—including movies and TV shows, music, and photos—with everyone in your living room using display mirroring, which includes support for Fire OS and Android.

Whispersync
Amazon’s Whispersync technology saves and synchronizes your video and music library across all of your devices. Start watching a movie on your Fire tablet or iPhone, and when you get home, pick up where you left off on your Fire TV. For games that support Whispersync, your place in the game will also sync across devices so you can always pick up where you left off.

All the Content
Prime Video
Prime members in Japan now have unlimited 24×7 streaming video at no additional cost to their Prime membership—¥3,900, the equivalent of ¥325 per month. With access to Prime Video, Prime members can now instantly watch thousands of popular Japanese and U.S. movies and TV shows, popular anime, fan-favorite music concerts and variety shows and more.

Movies and TV Shows from Hulu, GYAO!, Netflix and More

Netflix acquired subscription video on demand (SVOD) rights on a global basis to COLONY

Netflix Acquires Second Window SVOD Rights to COLONY, Which Premieres on USA Network January 14Sep 28, 2015

Beverly Hills, CA, 2015-9-28 — /EPR Retail News/ — Netflix, Inc., Legendary Television and Universal Cable Productions announced today that Netflix has acquired subscription video on demand (SVOD) rights on a global basis to COLONY, a highly anticipated new drama from Carlton Cuse (“Lost”) and Ryan Condal (“Hercules”), which premieres on USA January 14, 2016. COLONY is a co-production between Legendary Television and Universal Cable Productions.

Leading up to its Season 1 premiere Netflix has licensed second window streaming rights to COLONY, which now joins the ranks of other popular, highly-rated, and critically acclaimed series that Netflix has recently acquired such as “How to Get Away with Murder,” “Jane the Virgin,” and “Zoo,” all entering their second seasons. Netflix will stream COLONY about a year after its linear broadcast on USA in the U.S., on Bell Media’s Bravo in Canada, and after its linear broadcast in other territories worldwide.

Set in the very near future, COLONY centers on one family’s struggle to survive and bring liberty back to the people of an occupied Los Angeles.

SAG winner Josh Holloway (“Lost”) stars as former FBI agent Will Bowman and Satellite Award winner Sarah Wayne Callies (“The Walking Dead”) stars as his wife, Katie, in the series which takes place in a dangerous world of divided ideologies. While some choose to collaborate with the occupation and benefit from the new order, others rebel and suffer the consequences. After being separated from their son during the invasion, Will and Katie are willing to do whatever is necessary to be reunited with him. Thus, when the powerful Proxy Snyder (Peter Jacobson, “House”) offers Will a chance to get his son back if he will collaborate with the occupational government, Will and Katie find themselves faced with the toughest decision of their lives. They will have to go beyond whatever they thought possible, risking their lives and their relationship to protect their family. Nelson McCormick (“24”) also executive produces.

“We knew from the moment we saw it that COLONY is the kind of smart serialized drama that Netflix members around the world would love watching,” said Ted Sarandos, Netflix Chief Content Officer.

“We here at Legendary Television are thrilled that COLONY has a new global home in Netflix,” said Bruce Rosenblum, President, Legendary Television & Digital Media. “Netflix is the perfect service to stream COLONY after its initial broadcast in all countries outside North America, whether allowing fans to catch up with their favorite show before the new season airs or enticing new fans to the series. Netflix’s purchase of rights to COLONY, even before Season 1 has aired, is a huge vote of confidence for this exciting new drama.”

“As we ready to premiere COLONY in January, this deal with Netflix will expand the global audience reach of a show we’re all so proud of right out of the gate,” said Jeff Wachtel, Chief Content Officer, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment and President, Universal Cable Productions. “In this age of new business models and innovative windowing, this unprecedented access to international viewers is an extraordinarily positive sign in the right direction to grow the series as a long-term asset for our studio.”

“We applaud Netflix for recognizing COLONY’s value even before it has begun to air on USA. NBCUniversal is pleased to partner with Netflix on COLONY to make the show available to an even larger audience in the U.S. and Canada,” said Frances Manfredi, President, NBCUniversal, TV & New Media Distribution, U.S. and Canada.

Netflix commissioned House of Tomorrow to produce the twelve new episodes of Black Mirror as a Netflix original series

Beverly Hills, Calif., 2015-9-28 — /EPR Retail News/ — Netflix, the world’s leading Internet TV network, will bring viewers twelve all-new episodes of Charlie Brooker’s critically acclaimed, mind-bending anthology series Black Mirror.

Netflix has commissioned House of Tomorrow to produce the twelve new episodes as a Netflix original series. House of Tomorrow’s Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones, who executive produced the first seven episodes of the series, will continue to serve as executive producers and showrunners for the new episodes. Brooker has commenced writing the new episodes, which are scheduled to begin production in late 2015 from the series’ production base in the UK.

“It’s all very exciting — a whole new bunch of Black Mirror episodes on the most fitting platform imaginable. Netflix connects us with a global audience so that we can create bigger, stranger, more international and diverse stories than before, whilst maintaining that ‘Black Mirror’ feel. I just hope none of these new story ideas come true,” said Brooker.

“Charlie has created a one-of-a-kind series with an uncanny voice and prescient, darkly comedic vision. We’re tremendously proud to bring Black Mirror to our members as a Netflix original series,” said Cindy Holland, Vice President, original content, Netflix.

Premiere date and episode rollout will be announced at a later date. The series will premiere internationally in all Netflix territories outside the UK and Ireland, where plans are still being determined.

Created and written by Brooker, Black Mirror taps into our collective unease with the modern world and each stand-alone episode is a sharp, suspenseful tale exploring themes of contemporary techno-paranoia. Without questioning it, technology has transformed all aspects of our lives; in every home; on every desk; in every palm – a plasma screen; a monitor; a Smartphone – a Black Mirror reflecting our 21st Century existence back at us. The series has been recognized with an international Emmy Award, a Peabody Award, a Rose D’Or and been nominated for a Bafta® award.

Beverly Hills, Calif., 2015-9-8 — /EPR Retail News/ — Bill Wolff has been named executive producer of Chelsea Handler’s radical refresh of the talk show for the global on-demand generation, premiering in all Netflix territories in 2016 for all members to enjoy however and whenever they like. It was also announced today that the show will be produced in Los Angeles.

The new talk show will feature an updated format that encompasses Chelsea’s unfiltered opinions on topical entertainment and cultural issues, as well as her signature guest interviews.

“Bill is the visionary we have been looking for to create a dynamic new format that’s global, informative and entertaining,” said Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos. “He brings new creativity and fresh conversations to the talk show format that the on-demand generation and Chelsea’s audience will care about.”

“I could not be more thrilled to join Netflix and Chelsea Handler in transforming what we know to be the talk show,” said Wolff. “Viewers love Chelsea and her ability to go to a place and ask the questions no one else will. I can’t wait to work with these pioneers in the business to entertain and educate audiences around the world.”

Wolff most recently served as executive producer of season 18 of ABC Television’s The View. Prior to that, he was Vice President of Primetime Programming at MSNBC from 2005–2014 where he created and executive produced The Rachel Maddow Show from 2008 to 2014. He began his career at ESPN and won two Emmy Awards for Best Sports Journalism (1990 and 1996) for the network’s Outside the Lines program. Following ESPN, Wolff embarked on a successful career as a screenwriter whose entrée to the field was the sale of Total Sports, a thriller about sports television and game fixing, to Scott Rudin at Paramount Pictures. He went on to write several studio scripts, including the 2005 Fox release Rebound.

In 2002, Wolff returned to television to create and produce ESPN’s longstanding daily talk show Around the Horn. Wolff is an honors graduate of Harvard University, where he studied American history.

Chelsea Handler is one of the most exciting and successful figures in the entertainment industry. Handler was honored as one of Glamour Magazine’s Women of the Year in 2011 and was also featured in TIME magazine’s annual TIME 100. Both publications recognized Chelsea for her multiplatform success as a bestselling author, talk show host, stand–up comedian and actress.

As the host of E!’s Chelsea Lately, Handler was the only female to break into the otherwise male–dominated late night arena. She built Chelsea Lately into one of the highest rated shows on E! and ended her successful run on August 26th, 2014.

Handler is one of the leading nonfiction authors with five bestselling books currently in print and was named “one of the clear winners of 2010” by Publisher’s Weekly. She recently released her fifth book Uganda Be Kidding Me about her travels, which was her fourth book to debut at #1 on the New York Times Bestseller List. In support of the release, Handler embarked on the “Uganda Be Kidding Me Live” tour, which included 35 cities in the U.S., Europe, Australia and New Zealand. The culmination of her aforementioned wildly popular international stand–up tour is now streaming as a Netflix original comedy special titled, Uganda Be Kidding Me, Live.

Uganda Be Kidding Me is the third book published by her Grand Central imprint “Borderline Amazing/A Chelsea Handler Book,” the first was Lies That Chelsea Handler Told Me, and the second was Ross Mathew’s book Man Up: Tales of My Delusional Self–Confidence which released in May 2013. On March 28th, 2010, Handler had three books ranked at #1, #2, and #3 on the Bestseller Lists simultaneously — a remarkable feat for any author.

She will next be seen starring in Chelsea Does, a Netflix documentary film series featuring Chelsea exploring four topics of personal and universal fascination: marriage, racism, technology, and drugs.

Netflix to premiere the original documentary Winter on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom, directed by Evgeny Afineevsky, on October 9, 2015

Captivating Film Profiles Ukrainian Youth Movement and the Nation’s Struggle for Freedom

Beverly Hills, Calif., 2015-8-7— /EPR Retail News/ — Netflix, the world’s leading Internet TV network, will premiere the original documentary Winter on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom, directed by Evgeny Afineevsky, on Friday, October 9, 2015 exclusively to Netflix members worldwide.

Chronicling events that unfolded over 93 days in 2013 and 2014, Winter on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom witnesses the formation of a new civil rights movement in Ukraine. What started as peaceful student demonstrations supporting European integration morphed into a full-fledged violent revolution calling for the resignation of the nation’s president. The film captures the remarkable mobilization of nearly a million citizens from across the country protesting the corrupt political regime that utilized extreme force against its own people to suppress their demands and freedom of expression.

The harrowing documentary is set to make its world premiere at the 72nd Venice Film Festival in September.

“Evgeny has assembled a cinematic tribute to the heroism, spirit and determination of the Ukrainian people,” said Lisa Nishimura, Netflix VP of Original Documentary Programming. “We are honored to provide a global platform for him to share his powerful narrative.”

“While we were filming unfathomably brutal attacks by the police on unarmed citizens, we weren’t thinking about how to get the best shots, only the importance of showing the ways in which the movement would forever change the country and the lives of its participants,” said director Evgeny Afineevsky. “We’re pleased that Netflix is enabling us to share the hard truth and shocking reality of this historical event with the rest of the world.”

The Winter on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom filmmakers investigated the escalating political crisis in Ukraine from directly within the conflict zone. At the onset of demonstrations, they were there to record the special forces who were deployed to disperse the crowds, beating and seriously injuring hundreds of protesters. It was this moment that ultimately gave rise to mass protests and large-scale civil unrest in the country. In response, millions of Ukrainians rallied together to fight against the police state. Through interviews with protesters, activists, journalists, medical workers, artists and clergy representing multiple generations, social classes, nationalities and faiths, including a twelve-year old volunteer, the film tells the story of a diverse movement that self-organized towards one common goal, that stood their ground in the midst of extreme bloodshed, despair and the harshest of conditions.

Winter on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom is Evgeny Afineevsky’s third feature documentary. He has produced over ten feature and short films, including the 2002 adaptation of Crime & Punishment, starring Vanessa Redgrave, Crispin Glover, John Hurt and Margot Kidder. He also produced and directed numerous TV projects. His feature directorial debut, Oy Vey! My Son is Gay! has garnered numerous awards at film festivals globally.

The Netflix original documentary Winter on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom is produced by Netflix, Afineevsky – Tolmor Production, UkrStream.TV and SPN Production, in association with Passion Pictures, Campbell Grobman Films and Rock Paper Scissors Entertainment. The film is produced by Evgeny Afineevsky and Den Tolmor. John Battsek, Lati Grobman, Christa Campbell, Lisa Nishimura, Adam Del Deo, Angus Wall, David Dinerstein, Andrew Ruhemann, Dennis L. Kogod, Nadine Khapsalis Kogod and Bohdan Batruch serve as Executive Producers.

Netflix adds three new animated series to its growing slate of original preschool content

Beverly Hills, Calif., 2015-7-21 — /EPR Retail News/ — Expanding its award-winning programming for everyone in the household, Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX), the world’s leading Internet TV network adds three new animated series to its growing slate of original preschool content.

On the heels of this month’s earlier announcement of preschool original series Cirque du Soleil – Luna Petunia and Puffin Rock, Netflix introduces Word Party, Kazoops! and True & the Rainbow Kingdom. Created to engage and pique the curiosity of preschool viewers, these new series feature elements of language acquisition, problem solving and critical thinking throughout each episode.

Word Party – 2016
Word Party is a vocabulary building show from The Jim Henson Company that follows four adorable baby animals as they sing, dance and play. The show invites our youngest viewers to help teach the baby animals new words, learn these new words themselves, and even celebrate these achievements with a “Word Party!” Word Party is produced using the groundbreaking Henson Digital Puppetry Studio, a proprietary technology from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop that allows puppeteers to perform digitally animated characters in real time – enabling the animation to be more lifelike and spontaneous. Twenty-six 11-min episodes will premiere exclusively on Netflix around the world in 2016.

Kazoops! – 2016
Monty has a huge imagination, a great sense of adventure and is always asking the question “Why,” because the world is full of stuff people do and say that makes him scratch his head and wonder. Are all monsters scary? Can animals play music? Why must we wear matching socks? Accompanied by his best friend Jimmy Jones, the family pet pig, Monty challenges everyday preconceptions about life through the power of his imagination. Kazoops!, produced by Cheeky Little, in partnership with the ABC and BBC, promotes curiosity and critical thinking and brings to the screen a playful CGI animation style that draws on traditional claymation and fun 2D graphic art. The 13 episode series will premier on Netflix around the globe in late 2016 and launch in the UK and Australia at a later date.

True & the Rainbow Kingdom – 2017
True & the Rainbow Kingdom is a comedy adventure series for preschoolers from Guru Studio, Home Plate Entertainment and i am OTHER. True is the guardian of the magical Rainbow Kingdom and the show’s bright and resilient girl lead. True, along with her best friend, Bartleby the cat, use ingenuity and creative thinking to solve problems big and small, and bring harmony and love to all. The series is based on artwork by the Friends With You fine art collective and its positive messages of Magic, Luck, and Friendship. Coming in 2017, ten 22-min episodes will premiere on Netflix globally and launch in Canada at a later date.

Netflix’s statement in support of the FCC’s adoption of strong net neutrality rules

Washington, D.C., 2015-3-4 — /EPR Retail News/ — Below is Netflix’s statement in support of the FCC’s adoption of strong net neutrality rules:

“The net neutrality debate is about who picks winners and losers online: Internet service providers or consumers. Today, the FCC settled it: Consumers win.

Today’s order is a meaningful step towards ensuring ISPs cannot shift bad conduct upstream to where they interconnect with content providers like Netflix. Net neutrality rules are only as strong as their weakest link, and it’s incumbent on the FCC to ensure these interconnection points aren’t used to end-run the principles of an open Internet.

Given the lack of competition among broadband providers, today’s other FCC decision preventing regulations that thwart local investment in new broadband infrastructure also is an important step toward ensuring greater consumer choice. These actions kick off a new era that puts the consumer, not litigious corporate giants, at the center of competition policy.”
