NGA Foundation’s first-ever Independence Day of Giving campaign raised 846,553 meals for Feeding America

CHICAGO, Ill., 2017-Oct-18 — /EPR Retail News/ — Today (Oct 17, 2017), the NGA Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the National Grocers Association (NGA), announced it raised $76,959.37, or 846,553 meals, for Feeding America, the largest domestic hunger-relief organization, as part of the first-ever Independence Day of Giving campaign. The donation was presented as a check to Nancy Curby, senior vice president of corporate partnerships and operations at Feeding America, during NGA’s Fall Leadership Meetings in Chicago, Ill.

The campaign, in partnership with Retailer Owned Food Distributors & Associates (ROFDA), encouraged shoppers at locally-owned supermarkets to add a $1, $3, or $5 donation to their grocery bills throughout the month of June, with a focus on June 21 as the Independents Day of Giving. The funds will be redistributed to local food pantries to help purchase, package, and transport food to Americans who are facing the nation’s hunger crisis through Feeding America’s nationwide network.

“Whether it’s restocking nearby food pantries in times of need or raising money to close the hunger gap, locally-owned independent supermarkets have a long history of giving back to the communities they serve,” said Peter J. Larkin, president and CEO of NGA. “It’s just another example of how independent grocers across the country stand apart.”

“No one should have to worry about where their next meal is coming from—especially children,” said Francis Cameron, president and CEO of ROFDA. “Independents Day of Giving is just one more example of how the independent supermarket industry is helping nourish kids and families in need throughout our nation.”

One in eight people struggles with hunger in the United States, according to Feeding America. As of 2016, 41.2 million Americans live in food-insecure households, including 28.3 million adults and 12.9 million children, according to the USDA.

The donations were collected by Making Change, a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit, and redistributed back into the local communities of each participating independent supermarket by Feeding America.

Independent grocers call on shoppers to donate to help support local food banks

More than 1,600 independent grocers from across the nation urge shoppers to donate $1, $3, or $5 at the register to support their local food banks and pantries

ARLINGTON, VA, 2017-Jun-22 — /EPR Retail News/ — The National Grocers Association (NGA), the trade association representing the independent supermarket industry, NGA Research and Education Foundation (NGAREF), and Retailer Owned Food Distributors & Associates (ROFDA) recognized today (June 21, 2017) as the “Independents Day of Giving” to help fight hunger and raise community awareness with more than 1,600 independent grocers across the country participating.

Shoppers have been encouraged to add $1, $3, or $5 donations to their grocery bill throughout the month of June, with a focus on June 21, the first day of summer. Each contribution will help support local food banks that are members of the Feeding America nationwide network of 200 food banks and 60,000 food pantries and meal programs.

“Contrary to popular belief, the highest demand for food is during the summer after the holiday food drives end and the same people who were hungry on Christmas are still hungry in June,” said Peter J. Larkin, president and CEO, NGA. “Locally-owned independent supermarkets have a long history of giving back to the communities they serve and are eager to work with shoppers to help restock their neighborhood’s food pantry by making a small contribution at the register.”

A comprehensive report on hunger, “Hunger in America 2014,” found that the Feeding America network serves one in eight people – or 46.6 million – each year. The USDA estimates that one in six children – 17.9 percent – faces food insecurity, compared to the nation’s overall food insecurity rate of 13.4 percent.

“With children on break from school, families facing food insecurity are forced to find an additional two meals for their kids each day,” said Elizabeth Crocker, vice president and executive director, NGA Research and Education Foundation. “That means finding an extra $300 for groceries when kids are out of school, which isn’t feasible for many families.”

More than 22 million children in the United States receive free or reduced-price school lunches and just four million – or just 18 percent – receive free meals in the summer when school meals are not as readily available, according to 2016 USDA report on the National School Lunch Program.

“One of the most important missions of any supermarket operator and the wholesalers that serve them is to feed the families and support their communities,” said Francis Cameron, president and CEO, ROFDA. “We’re excited to maximize the impact of the independent supermarket industry and give back to their communities.”

“Children need good nutrition all year long. When school lets out, millions of children no longer have readily available access to a healthy school breakfast or lunch,” said Dave McConnell, president and CEO of Making Change. “We are delighted to join NGA and ROFDA for this vital, life-saving initiative to fill the gap for our children so they can reach for their dreams.”

The donations will be collected by Making Change, a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit, and redistributed back into the local communities of each participating independent supermarket by Feeding America.

NGA applauds House Ways and Means Committee’s hearing on tax reform

ARLINGTON, VA, 2017-May-19 — /EPR Retail News/ — Today (May 18, 2017), the National Grocers Association (NGA), the trade association representing the independent supermarket industry, released the following statement on the House Ways and Means Committee’s hearing on tax reform:

“We applaud the House for taking an important first step towards a once-in-a-generation tax reform that can create a level playing field for American businesses and spur job growth in communities across the country,” said Peter J. Larkin, president and CEO of NGA. “Independent grocers are serious about achieving meaningful tax reform that will significantly lower effective rates for Main Street businesses.”

The independent supermarket industry is prepared to forgo certain tax provisions that have benefited the industry in exchange for a simplified tax code. Independent grocers believe the following principles should guide the House and Senate as they consider tax reform:

  • Lowering the tax rate across the board. Many industries are able to take advantage of narrowly structured deductions and credits to craft an effective tax rate in the single digits. Independent grocers have limited access to many of these deductions and pay at, or near, the top marginal rate.
  • Maintaining the interest expense deduction. While most independent supermarkets do not generate meaningful amounts of interest income, many carry interest expense on their books. Grocers rely on debt to finance everything from daily operations to large renovations. Altering any piece of the deduction would slow economic growth and could lead to fewer jobs being created.
  • Creating parity between pass-through entities and C-Corporations. Congress should not dictate decisions about or favor one type of legal entity over another. Tax reform must include both pass-throughs (which represent 95 percent of the business filing in the U.S. in 2012) and C-Corporations, and should create parity between the two structures. Both deserve a lower effective federal tax rate.
  • Rejecting a border adjustment tax (BAT). If a BAT is put in place, American consumers could face higher food prices for goods that in many cases are not produced in the U.S. (e.g., coffee, bananas). If the purpose of a BAT is to help create jobs, as proponents argue, then taxing products that cannot be made on American soil does not make sense.
  • Preserving the use of last-in, first-out method of accounting (LIFO). The LIFO method of inventory accounting has been allowed since 1939 and is broadly used in the food wholesale and retail industry. LIFO helps protect against inventory price shocks that can result from inflation and is an important tool that aids the industry in long-term planning.
  • Permanently repealing the estate tax. Well over half of the assets of a typical supermarket—the highest of any other industry sector—are not liquid, so the death of an owner creates a serious obstacle to the continuation of the business. Because the estate tax is assessed on the value of a business at the owner’s death, it often forces families to borrow funds to pay the tax. This tax could destroy family-held business, hurting communities by causing the loss of jobs.

FMS and NGA release their annual “Independent Grocers Financial Survey

Independent Grocers Financial Survey reveals the independent supermarket industry faced challenges in 2016 due to deflation

ARLINGTON, VA, 2017-May-16 — /EPR Retail News/ — FMS Solutions Holdings LLC (FMS) and the National Grocers Association (NGA) today (May 15, 2017)  released their annual “Independent Grocers Financial Survey,” the latest edition covering fiscal year 2016. The study, now in its 12th year, found Independent grocers reported that their sales were down 1.62 percent in 2016 compared to 2015.

Food at home deflation across all categories, especially in meat and dairy, had a negative impact for US retailers. As a result, independent grocers’ net profits were lower than one percent, at 0.98 percent compared to 1.44 percent in fiscal year 2015.Margins held steady at over 27 percent and expenses came out at 23.04 percent of sales in 2016. Independent grocers were able to manage their expenses despite labor and benefits increasing to its highest percentage of sales at 14.84 percent. The top 25 percentile, or the profit leaders, managed to grow their net profits over the previous year, showing an increase of 4.7 percent.

“While 2016 was a disappointing year for net profits, the independent grocer has proven its ability to recover in the past,” said Robert Graybill, president and CEO of FMS. “We expect to see some continued consolidation as a result of tough competition from both online and new brick and mortar retailers, but the flexibility and ingenuity of the independent is clear by the results of the profit leaders and serves as a beacon of direction that others can follow to excel as well.”

Falling unemployment and a higher turnover is one reason independents’ labor and benefits continue to increase. Independent grocers rated competition from other retailers as the biggest factor affecting their bottom line, and health care costs as the second most cited concern.

“The supermarket business is not for the faint of heart. Low profit margins and constantly changing consumer preferences make it challenging even for the best operators,” said Peter J. Larkin, president and CEO of NGA. “But as independents continue to invest in their local communities and work diligently to stay ahead of rapidly changing consumer trends, they are differentiating themselves in a fiercely competitive marketplace to become shoppers’ stores of choice.”

The survey covered over 100 retailers in 33 US states and seven Canadian provinces. The study’s goals are to gauge the financial performance of independent grocers and put it context with economic, political, and competitive factors. This report also examines how the profit leaders operate their business differently, such as their inventory and shrink, and generate more net profit.

NGA urges House Financial Services Committee to oppose the Financial CHOICE Act of 2017

Arlington, VA, 2017-May-05 — /EPR Retail News/ — The National Grocers Association (NGA) today (May 2, 2017) urged members of the House Financial Services Committee to oppose the Financial CHOICE Act of 2017 (H.R. 10) as long as it contains a provision to repeal debit swipe fee reform. NGA President and CEO Peter J. Larkin issued the following statement during a mark-up of the legislation this morning:

“While banks and financial institutions enjoy a hefty 25 percent profit margin and earn nearly $79 billion each year in swipe fees, independent supermarkets operate on a one to two percent profit margin annually in a highly competitive market. Debit swipe fee reform brought competition and transparency into a marketplace that has historically lacked it by ensuring merchants have access to at least two competitive networks for routing their transactions. Congress should be protecting Main Street grocers from the price-gouging that’s historically taken place, not enshrining it into the law.”

Yesterday, NGA sent a key vote letter to members of the House Financial Services Committee urging them to oppose the Financial CHOICE Act. Click HERE to view the letter.

Supermarket executives rallied on Capitol Hill to discuss federal policies

WASHINGTON, D.C., 2017-May-05 — /EPR Retail News/ — More than 200 supermarket industry CEOs and senior executives, representing nearly every state from across the U.S., rallied on Capitol Hill to discuss federal policies affecting their businesses at the annual Day in Washington fly-in. Food retail and supermarket operator members from the Food Marketing Institute (FMI), the National Grocers Association (NGA), and the Food Industry Association Executives (FIAE) met with lawmakers to discuss the increased market competition and transparency brought by debit swipe fee reform and reforming the tax code in a way that restores predictability and stimulates capital investment.

“The grocery industry is hyper-competitive, with stores competing for customers on price, quality and service every day and averaging a narrow 1.9% profit margin every year. Debit reforms have saved customers over $30 billion since 2010,” said Leslie Sarasin, president and CEO, FMI. “Debit reforms brought transparency and predictability to the cost of accepting debit cards. Repealing these reforms would be an expensive step in the wrong direction.”

“As Congress prepares to consider tax reform legislation it’s important for the decision makers in Washington to hear directly from their main street supermarkets regarding the need for comprehensive tax reform,” said Peter J. Larkin, president and CEO, NGA. “Advocating for commonsense legislative policies, such as simplifying the tax code, achieving parity between pass-through companies and C-corps, and eliminating the death tax for family-owned businesses are important to our members so they can focus on expanding their business, creating more jobs, and boosting local economies.”

NGA launches the “Independents Day of Giving” campaign to help fight hunger and support Feeding America

National Grocers Association partners with Feeding America, Food Distributors to raise funds for local hunger-relief organizations

Arlington, VA, 2017-May-04 — /EPR Retail News/ — Today (May 2, 2017), the National Grocers Association (NGA), along with the NGA Research and Education Foundation, launched the “Independents Day of Giving” campaign to help fight hunger and raise community awareness by supporting Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization with over 200 food banks and 60,000 food pantries nationwide.

The campaign, in partnership with the Retail Owned Food Distributors & Associates (ROFDA) and Making Change, will take place during the month of June, with a focus on June 21, the first day of summer, as a highlighted “Day of Giving,” where shoppers will be encouraged to add a $1, $3, or $5 donation to their grocery bill at independent supermarkets.Over 2,000 independent grocers have committed to participating in the inaugural Independents Day of Giving campaign.

“Too many families are forced to choose between feeding themselves and paying utilities, receiving medical care, or keeping a roof over their head,” said Elizabeth Crocker, vice president and executive director, NGA Research and Education Foundation. “With such strong ties to the communities they serve, independent grocers have the unique opportunity to make sure no one is put in that difficult situation.”

“Together, supermarket operators and the wholesalers that serve them work hard every day to support their communities. ROFDA is pleased to be a part of the Independents Day of Giving to highlight this work, maximize the impact of the independent supermarket industry, and show our nationwide commitment to this cause,” said Francis Cameron, president and CEO, ROFDA.

A recent study by Feeding America found that one in seven people struggles with hunger in the United States. The survey found that nearly 20.9 percent of children face food insecurity, compared to the nation’s overall food insecurity rate of 15.4 percent.

“While food banks are often flooded with donations during the winter months, many are in desperate need throughout summer when kids may lack access to school meal programs,” said Peter J. Larkin, president and CEO, NGA. “By making a small contribution at the register, shoppers can help ensure their local food banks and pantries can better serve their communities,” Larkin commented.

The donations will be collected by Making Change, a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit, and redistributed back into the local communities of each participating independent supermarket.

Each year, Feeding America supplies food to more than 46.5 million people in the U.S., including 12 million children and seven million seniors.

NGA 2017 Best Bagger Champion — Brady Long of Buehler’s Fresh Foods in Medina, Ohio

Las Vegas, NV, 2017-Feb-15 — /EPR Retail News/ — Brady Long of Buehler’s Fresh Foods, located in Medina, Ohio, defeated 22 other Best Bagger competitors from across the nation to claim a grand prize of $10,000 and the title of the National Grocers Association (NGA) Best Bagger Champion.

Designed to promote supermarket employees and demonstrate a superior core customer service skill, the nationwide competition has been held by NGA since 1987. Contestants are judged by speed of bagging, proper bag-building technique, weight distribution in the bag, as well as style, attitude and appearance, and are chosen through statewide competitions over the course of last year.

This year’s competition was sponsored by PepsiCo, Inc. and emceed for the third consecutive year by Food Network star, Chef Duff Goldman. The competition was held Monday, February 13 during The NGA Show at the Mirage Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV.

Kayelyn Henley of K-VA-T Food City in Virginia was awarded the second place prize of $5,000, and the third place prize of $1,000 went to Hunter Wisecarver of K-VA-T Food City in Tennessee. Fourth and fifth place winners, winning $1,000 each, were Spencer Balderas of Shaw’s Supermarket in Vermont and Molly Dittman of Harmon’s in Utah, respectively.

“Baggers and courtesy clerks are often the last impression a customer has of a store, and because of this, superior bagging skills, along with friendly customer service, are critical elements to a positive shopping experience for the consumer,” said NGA President and CEO Peter J. Larkin. “The Best Bagger competition truly epitomizes the spirit and work ethic of the supermarket industry.  Congratulations to Brady, who competed with great enthusiasm, and to all our Best Bagger participants who showcased their passion for excellent customer service.”

The Best Bagger Championship is a nationwide promotion for supermarket employees. It is intended to demonstrate a superior core customer service skill in a friendly competition. It has been sponsored since 1987 by the National Grocers Association as part of its annual trade show.

NGA & Nielsen national grocery shoppers survey: high consumer satisfaction among independent supermarkets

Las Vegas, NV, 2017-Feb-15 — /EPR Retail News/ — The National Grocers Association (NGA), the trade association representing the independent supermarket industry, today (Feb 13, 2017) released topline results from its national grocery shoppers survey that was conducted by Nielsen on behalf of NGA. The survey segments data by independent shoppers from regional and national chain shoppers and provides analysis into consumer attitudes and behaviors. Insights from the survey, along with recommendations on how independents can identify trends and implement strategies to grow their bottom lines were presented during an educational session at The NGA Show.

The results revealed high consumer satisfaction among independent supermarkets. 82% of respondents who primarily shop at an independent supermarket reported being very/extremely satisfied compared to 65% of respondents who reported being very/extremely satisfied with a national chain. Findings from the survey also showed that independent grocers perform highly in featuring fresh food, the selection of locally grown produce and other packaged goods, and high quality fresh fruits and vegetables.

“In an extremely competitive industry, independents are finding innovative ways to differentiate themselves in the marketplace and are doing so with much success,” said Peter J. Larkin, president and CEO, National Grocers Association. “With their strong community roots and the agility to respond quickly to consumer demand, independent grocers are on the forefront of meeting customer demand, particularly in areas such as local and fresh.”

“Survey results show once again that grocery shoppers are extremely satisfied with the experience they are having with independent grocery stores. While independents can grow their market share by leveraging their strengths, there are areas of opportunity for growth, such as in the health and wellness categories and offering dietitian services,” said Laurie Rains, vice president, U.S. Retail Consumer & Shopper Analytics at Nielsen.

“The results from this survey provide good recommendations that independent grocers can implement to win in the marketplace. NGA is providing resources to our members to help them implement new business strategies to grow their bottom line,” Larkin noted.

Key findings of the research included:

Local Offerings – According to the survey results, independents shoppers value locally grown fresh foods and source traceability more than national and regional chain shoppers.

The Health and Wellness Wave – Six in ten shoppers believe that healthy foods should be displayed alongside other food items.

Digital Touch – Results show that 20% of shoppers shop online, up from 16% last year, with 74% who shop online use a delivery service and 44% use click and collect.

Community – A quarter of shoppers are strongly influenced by a store that engages in the community, up 4% higher than last year’s results.

These survey results will be released in full and further examined in a “The Independent Consumer” webinar series throughout 2017. This research report was sponsored by The Shelby Report.

Find more at www.nationalgrocers.org/consumertrends.

Methodology: The National Survey of Grocery Shoppers was conducted online within the United States by Harris Poll on behalf of The National Grocers Association (NGA) among 1902 adults, 18 and over between November 1 – November 25, 2016 using a sample from the Harris Poll Panel.  The sample was split into a geographic grouping of urban, suburban, and rural shoppers, and was segmented by consumers who shop at independent supermarkets.

Respondents for this survey were selected from among those who have agreed to participate in Harris Poll surveys. Because the sample is based on those who were invited to participate in the Harris Poll online research panel, no estimates of theoretical sampling error can be calculated. A complete survey method, including weighting variables, is available upon request.

NGA applauds introduction of the Common Sense Nutrition Disclosure Act of 2017

Arlington, VA, 2017-Feb-03 — /EPR Retail News/ — The National Grocers Association (NGA) today (Feb 2, 2017) applauded the introduction of the Common Sense Nutrition Disclosure Act of 2017 (H.R. 772, S. 261), a bipartisan bill that clarifies the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) final rule regarding menu labeling at restaurants and similar retail food establishments, which includes grocery stores with 20 or more locations. The bill is sponsored by U.S. Representatives Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) and Tony Cardenas (D-CA) in the House, and Senators Roy Blunt (R-MO) and Senator Angus King (I-ME) in the Senate.

“Independent supermarket operators are committed to providing their customers with transparent information about the products they sell, however grocers continue to face challenges and uncertainty with implementing a regulation that was originally designed for chain restaurants. The Common Sense Nutrition Disclosure Act provides the needed flexibility in how nutritional information is disclosed to customers based on the different ways that foods are prepared and sold across various supermarket venues and formats. Additionally, the bill protects store associates who make inadvertent mistakes and provides stores with 90 days to take corrective steps prior to any enforcement action,” said NGA President and CEO Peter J. Larkin. “NGA applauds Representatives McMorris Rodgers and Cardenas and Senators Blunt and King for championing this important issue. We look forward to working with them and their colleagues in the House and Senate to advance this common sense legislative fix to an unworkable regulation.”

The FDA finalized menu labeling regulations at the direction of the Affordable Care Act in November of 2014. The regulations require that chain restaurants, similar retail food establishments and vending machines with 20 or more locations list caloric information on their menus and menu boards.  The regulation is set to go into effect on May 5, 2017. NGA has actively engaged with Members of Congress and the FDA throughout the regulatory process to ensure a workable solution for supermarkets.

NGA calls on Visa to quickly remove any operating rule that violates federal law

Arlington, VA, 2016-Nov-21 — /EPR Retail News/ — The National Grocers Association (NGA) applauded the Federal Reserve for taking steps to protect competition in the debit card marketplace and called on Visa to quickly remove any operating rule that violates federal law.

Earlier this month, the Federal Reserve Board of Governors clarified that no payment card network can directly or indirectly force retailers to deploy a technology or enforce a rule that inhibits merchant routing choice, and that any technical specifications, that inhibits merchant routing choice is out of compliance with federal law.  The Federal Reserve’s action comes after merchant organizations, including NGA, and other parities raised concerns over Visa’s actions that were deployed as part of EMV migration upgrades.

In 2010, debit reform legislation was passed that increased competition in the debit routing market by requiring that at least two unaffiliated debit routing network be available to merchants for all purchases made using debit.  These reforms interjected competition back into a marketplace that was quickly becoming devoid of competition and debit routing choice.

In a letter sent yesterday to Visa, signed by leading merchant trade association CEOs, merchants called on Visa to detail their plans to comply with federal law and ensure that those merchants who have already migrated to EMV will not require re-certification nor any liability shift should they have to re-certify.  The letter also called on Visa to suspend its liability shift, which has placed an undue burden onto independent supermarket operators.

“On behalf of America’s independent supermarket operators, NGA appreciates the Federal Reserve’s action clarifying that federal law prohibits Visa and other card networks from impeding a merchant’s choice when it comes to which network to use when routing debit transactions,” said Peter J. Larkin, NGA president and CEO.  “NGA is committed to continuing our efforts to bring about true reform of the anti-competitive market that currently exists between Visa, MasterCard and their issuing banks.”

Arlington, VA, 2016-Sep-18 — /EPR Retail News/ — The National Grocers Association (NGA) held its fifth annual Congressional Best Bagger Showdown yesterday (Sep 14, 2016) at the Library of Congress, located on Capitol Hill. NGA’s 2016 Best Bagger National Champion, Candice Lastimado of Metropolitan Markets, located in Seattle, WA, competed against Congressman Dan Newhouse (WA-04). Candice was able to fend off a good effort by Congressman Newhouse to keep her Best Bagger Champion title.

“Our NGA members and independent grocers throughout the country are committed to meeting consumer expectations and providing top customer service on a daily basis. Baggers are often the first and last impression on a customer and play a key role in the success of a store,” said Peter J. Larkin, president and CEO, NGA. “NGA would like to thank Congressman Newhouse for joining us in this spirited event. In appreciation for his great effort, we’re pleased to name him an NGA Honorary Best Bagger.”

In addition to being named an Honorary Best Bagger, Congressman Newhouse was presented with the Champion of Independent Grocers Award in recognition of his efforts to advance pro-growth policies and enact legislation that supports the independent supermarket industry.

Earlier that day, Brandon Scholz, president and CEO of the Wisconsin Grocers Association presented on behalf of NGA the Champion of Independent Grocers Award to Congressman Ron Kind (WI-03).

The National Grocers Association: DOL final rule regarding overtime pay for salaried workers will negatively affect many store associates

Arlington, VA, 2016-May-18 — /EPR Retail News/ — The National Grocers Association (NGA) today issued the following statement on the U.S. Department of Labor’s (DOL) final rule regarding overtime pay for salaried workers.

“The independent supermarket industry plays a crucial role in America’s economy, creating nearly one million jobs across the nation. NGA members are proud to be an employer of choice in their communities, offering stable, reliable jobs and opportunities for career advancement, but unfortunately this rule will negatively affect many store associates, particularly those who are just entering into management positions within a company. Despite submitting extensive comments and meeting with the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to outline our concerns with this rule, the administration unfortunately proceeded with finalizing a “one-size-fits-all” rule that will significantly impact the independent supermarket industry and local communities in which independents serve. NGA will continue to push for a legislative solution that will ease the burden on independent supermarket operators, and ultimately their employees,” said Peter J. Larkin, NGA president and CEO.

NGA’s Labor and Employment counsel Kara M. Maciel, Conn Maciel Carey PLLC said, “NGA advocated strongly against the final rule by submitting public comments to the Department of Labor in September 2015 and making a presentation to the Office of Management and Budget in May 2016.  NGA argued that doubling the salary threshold would have dramatic consequences for independent grocers, especially given the narrow profit margin in a very competitive market.  Through our advocacy, we explained that the salary increase would negatively impact grocers, their employees, and the communities where independent retailers operate. We were pleased to see as a result of our advocacy, the DOL reject the automatic annual increases, instead giving employers a three year reprieve before the salary threshold rises again. In addition, NGA told the OMB that grocers needed at least 12 months to implement the rule in order to take the time to do it right and avoid costly mistakes that could lead to employee confusion and operational disarray. We are disappointed that the DOL has only provided a six month implementation window.”
