Starbucks to sharpen its focus on its up-leveled tea strategy with Teavana, furthering its growth and innovation in the super premium tea category

Seattle, 2017-Nov-06 — /EPR Retail News/ — Starbucks (NASDAQ: SBUX) today announced entry into a definitive agreement for Unilever to acquire the assets of the Tazo brand including its signature recipes, intellectual property and inventory for $384 million. In turn, Starbucks will drive a single tea brand strategy and focus with its super premium tea brand, Teavana.

Founded in 1994, and purchased by Starbucks in 1999 for $8.1 million, Tazo is an iconic tea brand sold primarily in grocery, mass and convenience channels, offered in formats including packaged teas, K-Cup® pods, and bottled ready-to-drink teas.

Starbucks will continue to invest in the growth, innovation and development of the Teavana brand of teas in its stores and in channels outside its stores. The tea category in Starbucks stores continues to grow double-digits globally, with Starbucks well on its way to building the Teavana business to over $3B over the next five years. In the past 12 months alone, Starbucks has sold more than $1.6B of Teavana beverages in Starbucks stores, launched ready-to-drink premium Teavana® Craft Iced Teas through its partnership with Anheuser-Busch InBev and plans to enter the packaged tea category in 2018.

“Over the past five years, we have established Teavana as our primary global brand focused on the premium tea segment. With our growth strategy for premium tea exclusively focused on Teavana, we are pleased to transition our Tazo business to Unilever,” said Kevin Johnson, president and chief executive officer, Starbucks. “We continue to see significant growth in our tea business through our Teavana brand, and this transition supports our strategy to elevate the premium tea experience for our customers.”

The transaction is expected to close during the fourth calendar quarter of 2017, with complete transition between the two companies by the end of calendar year 2018, subject to regulatory approval.

Starting today (October 10), customers will find Apple Pie á la Mode Herbal Infusion, Tiramisu Black Tea and Caramel Truffle Herbal Infusion in Teavana specialty retail stores across North America and online at Teavana.com.

“I look at these teas as an alternative to eating dessert,” said Jason Adams, Teavana brand manager. “You get the same flavors, but in a warm, soothing and indulgent tea.”

To create the new dessert teas, Adams and team considered a wide array of ingredients and flavors from more than a dozen popular treats, exploring how they could be combined to create the perfect indulgent tea blends. The team landed on three classic flavors.

Apple Pie à la Mode Herbal Infusion

This tea is a blend of apples, caramel, raisins and rose hips, a touch of rooibos tea and notes of cardamom-dusted hazelnut. Teavana highlights the flavor of apple varieties from Turkey, Austria and Germany, caramel pieces from Switzerland, and Red Rooibos tea that is harvested by hand in the Cederberg Mountains of South Africa.

“We were inspired by the taste of green apple pie, so this tea has a really pleasant balance of tart and sweet apples,” Adams said. “The caramel pieces dissolve in the tea, which offers a delicious taste.”

Tiramisu Black Tea

Inspired by the classic Italian dessert, this tea is a blend of European white and dark chocolate pieces, a touch of real Scotch Whiskey for subtle flavor and a full-bodied Chinese black tea. Teavana used different sizes and types of chocolate because they infuse differently in the tea. Dark chocolate adds more bite and white chocolate adds a creamy sweetness. Cocoa shells add body and rich flavor.

“There’s something about the combination of chocolate, the hint of whiskey as well as vanilla and cream that has a taste similar to espresso,” said Adams. “This allows us to create the rich, complex flavors usually found in a classic Tiramisu.”

Caramel Truffle Herbal Infusion

This tea features chocolate and caramel, complemented by sweet cinnamon and coconut. Teavana used real chocolate flakes and cocoa kernels, apples from Turkey and cinnamon from Southeast Asia to create this blend.

“Surprisingly, the apples contributed to much of the caramel flavor,” said Adams. “The coconut is toasted, which adds to the bold creamy flavor.”

Tea Collections

A Sweet Treat Tea Sampler, which includes two ounces each of Apple Pie á la Mode Herbal Infusion, Tiramisu Black Tea and Caramel Truffle Herbal Infusion, is available exclusively on Teavana.com.

Starting today (June 27), Beach Bellini herbal tea will be available at Teavana specialty retail stores across the U.S. and Canada as well as Teavana.com. It’s a blend of papaya, pineapple, mango, golden berry, tangerine, and pink rose buds and petals.

“The Beach Bellini tea has a peachy flavor similar to a Bellini cocktail,” said Jason Adams, category manager for Teavana. “A Bellini cocktail is a mixture of prosecco sparkling wine and peach purée or nectar. Anyone who likes iced tea and is looking for refreshment will love this tea. It’s perfect for warm summer days and nights.”

Beach Bellini can be served alone or blended with other Teavana® teas. It pairs well with Jasmine Dragon Phoenix Pearls Green Tea and Mango Black Flavored Black Tea.

While cocktails can provide inspiration for tea flavors like Beach Bellini, tea can also serve as an ideal ingredient in alcoholic beverages.Teavana worked with Jane Danger, a New York City mixologist and beverage director at Cienfuegos and Mother of Pearl, to create tea cocktails perfect for summer entertaining.

“It’s fun to use tea to spice up spirits like a clean rum or vodka because it gives them dimension,” said Danger. “Tea is very versatile. You can infuse a gin with tea or make syrup out of it. It’s the perfect setting for cocktails.”

When serving cocktails with food, Danger recommends pairing fruitier cocktails with meat dishes. “In general, the more acidic cocktails go with heavier foods and the lighter ones go with desserts,” she said.

Today, Teavana® is introducing seven new loose-leaf wellness teas that are an easy and delicious way to support a healthy lifestyle, with blends like Purify, Defense and Rev Up.

Teavana stores receive makeovers to create special experience for tea connoisseurs

SEATTLE, 2015-11-18 — /EPR Retail News/ — A team of Teavana and Starbucks partners (employees) have created a special experience for tea connoisseurs in two Seattle-area locations.

“We selected one of our Teavana stores and completely transformed the customers experience,” said Dan Karches, director, Marketing and Category for Teavana. “A tight partnership between tea, design and merchandise partners was the only way we were able to develop this unique concept that makes meaningful changes to how customers will experience our Teavana brand.”

Color-corrected LED lights create a spotlight on 75 varieties of tea in vibrant pink, yellow and traditional grey tones at the store, which reopened on November 10 in Westfield Southcenter in Tukwila.  A second location with a similar design opened November 16 at Bellevue Square, a high-end shopping center in Bellevue.

Crossing the Threshold

Anthony Perez, director, Americas Concepts and Pacific Northwest Store Design for Starbucks and Teavana, and a team of designers altered the store layout and put tea front and center.

“We know that it takes about three seconds for a customer to decide to come into the store or not,” said Perez. “Our goal was for the intention of the store to be immediately and clearly understood, that this is a vibrant and exciting new store absolutely all about tea.”

Teavana partners are on hand to answer questions or provide assistance to customers with tea blending, sampling and merchandise demonstrations.

“We wanted to turn the original store experience inside out, so it’s more invitational,” said Perez. “You can experience the store through a self-guided tour or learn about tea alongside one of our tea experts.”

Interacting with Tea

The Southcenter store features a matcha green tea wall, a hot tea demonstration section and a self-serve wet bar with six flavors of signature fresh-brewed iced tea. Customers can order iced tea by the glass or fill a glass growler to enjoy at home. In addition, pure teas as well as epicurean tea blends are available in loose leaf and pre-packed sachets.

A 23-foot-long concrete table known as the “make table” runs nearly the length of the Teavana location. It’s the store’s centerpiece where people can come together to taste and blend tea.

“We’ve created an experience that is like going behind the bar with your favorite bartender or spending time in a restaurant kitchen with your favorite chef,” said Jason Adams, Teavana category manager. “This community table provides an interactive space where you can gain a greater understanding of tea and customize a signature blend.”

The Southcenter and Bellevue locations will be the only Teavana stores to offer 14 microlot or small-batch teas.

“I thought about our existing customers as well as those who are new to tea when I assembled our collection,” said Nelson.

“We pushed for a mix of high-design, fashion and fun,” he said. “We tried to straddle that mix of what a museum art design store might carry, while also staying fun and youthful with colors and patterns.”

Starbucks and Teavana partners (employees), as well as Girls Inc. staff were at the tea bar to celebrate the partnership and provide mentoring support for the girls in attendance.

“We thought about what we would be doing and eating during the summer,” said Megan Droz, Starbucks senior product developer, Beverage and R&D. “We also considered the many Teavana® tea flavors and how we could make interesting combinations with them.”

Droz and team began with a long list of summer experiences and paired them with different flavor ideas. They gradually narrowed down their ideas until they arrived at the best combination for the new beverage.

“We always start with the experience first, not the flavor,” said Droz. “That gives us a much stronger connection to the beverage we create because the flavor is rooted in a feeling, in something special that has occurred.”

The Teavana® Shaken Iced Mango Black Tea Lemonade is a delicious blend of premium black tea, juicy mango, sweet passion fruit, and a splash of lemonade. Starbucks baristas will shake the beverage a minimum of 10 times in order to release the drink’s vibrant flavors.

There are many varietals of mango, so Droz had to select the one with the best taste. She looked for other flavors to accent the taste of the mango as well. The right balance of tartness to sweetness was also very important. The ideal beverage is mouth-watering and thirst-quenching.

“When it comes to iced tea, we strive for a very refreshing beverage,” said Droz. “We also want it to be ’cravable,’ so customers come back for more.”

Thanks to collaboration with Naoko Tsunoda, tea authority and director of tea development at Teavana, Droz had the perfect black tea for the new beverage. Teavana uses premium loose leaf tea and high quality ingredients that create innovative blends.

“We are excited to learn what customers think of the Teavana® Shaken Iced Mango Black Tea Lemonade,” said Droz. “I’m proud to have been a part of its development.”

“When making iced tea, I recommend exploring and tasting different flavors that blend well together. Bring the Loose Leaf Iced Tea Experience Home

Making homemade loose leaf iced tea is easy and delicious, and with Teavana products like the Modern Iced Teamaker, it’s simple to steep a large batch of iced tea, perfect for summer entertaining.

“When making iced tea, I recommend exploring and tasting different flavors that blend well together. Try blending fruity and fruity, fruity and floral, or even pure teas with fruity overtones using a rooibos, black or herbal tea, or a flavored or scented green tea, to serve over ice,” said Tsunoda.

Adds Tsunoda, “More than 30 percent of consumers drink iced tea at home, but only 10 percent are drinking loose leaf tea. To enjoy loose leaf iced tea at home, first double the amount of loose leaf tea used in a regular brew. SEATTLE, 2015-2-27 — /EPR Retail News/ — Creating a new tea blend can be a way to express your personality. Jason Adams, a six-year teaologist with Teavana, shares his secrets to crafting rich, multilayered tea blends.

“When we’re creating a new tea for Teavana, we usually start with a concept,” said Adams, who started as a store manager for one of Teavana’s first stores in Atlanta. “We take inspiration from cocktails, culinary, lifestyle – anywhere. Then we get in the kitchen and start mixing.”

Adams starts his flavored tea blends with an herbal base – such as citrus, berries or floral. From there, he builds layers of flavors with tea. Dark teas go well with spice, chocolate, and indulgent flavors. Lighter teas are complemented by berries and citrus. Stone fruits, like peaches and plums, can go across the spectrum of teas.

He recommends talking with Teavana’s store partners (employees) and checking out the three recommended blending options listed on the back of each tea tin.

“Sampling a wide variety of teas is a great way to begin,” he said. “Do you like spicy or unflavored? Delicate or strong?”

Tea Basics

White tea is delicate, sweet and subtle; green tea can be grassy, mild or nutty; oolong is complex, floral and aromatic; black tea is rich and robust with a tannic sweetness; and fermented dark pu-erh tea has a smooth, mineral flavor.

Some of these flavors work well in concert with one another, as they do in some of straight tea blends, such as Body + Mind, a blend of white, green and oolong.

Flavor Pairings

The secret to blending tea is balance. Because floral and fruity flavors tend to be easily overpowered, they don’t work well with strong black teas. Instead, floral and flavors pair wonderfully with delicate white teas.

Black teas blend well with equally strong, but opposing flavors, such as spice, mint and chocolate. Classic chai teas combine warming spices with black teas.

While green tea can be more challenging to blend, citrus, lemongrass and spicy ginger all work well when paired with a mild green tea. Stronger green teas balance with fruit flavors such as berries or pomegranates.

When pairing oolong teas, keep in mind that all oolongs are different. A green oolong will work best with citrus and berry flavors, while darker oolongs work much better with spicy and sweet flavors.

“It’s about exploration,” Adams said. “If you’re just starting out, I’d buy a few different components and keep them in separate containers. Then each day, you can try new combinations until you find the perfect one for you.”

SEATTLE, 2015-1-27 — /EPR Retail News/ — The 15 million women around the world who read Marie Claire magazine are looking for fashion and beauty trends, but they want more. They’re turning the pages or checking online to find inspiration and learn from female role models.

February’s edition features a “power profile” of Annie Young-Scrivner, president of Teavana and an executive vice president at Starbucks. In addition to highlighting Young-Scrivner’s leadership roles at Starbucks – including serving as president of Starbucks Canada, president of Tazo Tea, and Starbucks global chief marketing officer – the two-page article touches on some of the challenges she’s faced on her journey to becoming a top business executive.

Young-Scrivner, now 46, was born in Taiwan to Chinese parents and moved to Seattle when she was 7 years old.

“I remember second grade, coming to the U.S., learning my ABC’s,” she told the magazine. “My dad had worked for Kodak and could speak English fluently. When he moved here, he worked for a shipping company.  My mom, who is an accountant, didn’t know any English. She had to go to community college just to learn enough so she could get back into the accounting world.”

As a teenager, Young-Scrivner began working in a department store for the health benefits and to help pay her way through college. That store is now owned by Macy’s, and Young-Scrivner serves as the youngest member of the Macy’s Board of Directors. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration-Marketing from the University of Washington’s Foster School of Business and a Master of Business Administration degree from the Carlson School of Business at the University of Minnesota.

Her road to the top included driving a delivery truck. After graduating from college, she began a 20-year career at PepsiCo as a route sales representative. That involved loading an 18-foot truck with Frito-Lay products, then stocking grocery store shelves.

“My alarm went off at 2:30 a.m. every day, but I saw it as a huge opportunity to learn from the ground up,” she said.

In the Marie Claire article, Young-Scrivner reflects on her career path and success and shares this sentiment with readers:

“Dream big. That’s one thing my parents taught me,” she said. “I look at myself, a little Chinese girl who didn’t know a bit of English. I am here today because I was able to dream big.”

Additional advice she shares with readers, “Find something you are authentically passionate about. I was a huge fan of Starbucks way before I came to work for the company. I worked in 27 different countries and had 27 different Starbucks mugs. I was a fanatic.”
