Tesco in search for charities to benefit from estimated £1.8 million to be raised from carrier bag levies in Wales and Scotland

Cheshunt, England, 2014-6-19 — /EPR Retail News/ — Tesco has launched its search for the charities that will benefit from an estimated £1.8 million set to be raised from carrier bag levies in Wales and Scotland.

The retailer has given the green light for charities to submit proposals on how they could work with Tesco and use the money to make a difference for the environment and their communities.

With a new Scottish levy being introduced, for the first time, charities in Scotland will have the chance to benefit from the money raised.

Greg Sage, Community Director for Tesco said:

“This is a fantastic opportunity for charities to partner with us and make a real difference to the communities they serve.

“We’re committed to doing what we can to reduce our impact on the environment and support our local communities.

“The money raised from the bag levy in Wales has already been put to great use by the local RSPB, and we the expect successful bidders this time round will also use the money raised to make a huge difference. For the first time, charities in Scotland will have the chance to benefit from the bag levy too.”

UK charities that meet the criteria are welcome to apply for either one or both of the Scottish and Welsh charity partnerships, which are expected to be worth around £1 million and £800,000 respectively. Both partnerships will be for an initial period of 12 months from 1 October 2014 to 30 September 2015.

Legislation to introduce charging for plastic carrier bags came into force in Wales on 1 October 2011, and it is due to be introduced in Scotland from October 2014. It means plastic carrier bags are no longer given away free when people go shopping, which helps conserve the environment.

Since 2011, the charge in Wales has raised over £2 million for the local RSPB, which has been used for vital conservation work.
