Costa Coffee introduces innovative new Flat Family range

  • All new Costa Coffee Flat Family launches with Flat Mocha, Flat Black and Coconut Flat White joining the classic Flat White
  • All hail the mighty White Hot Chocolate; fan favourite makes a comeback for a limited time only
  • Easter Choc-O-Crunch and Lemon Layer Cake do the bunny hop onto the seasonal sweet menu

London, 2018-Mar-08 — /EPR Retail News/ — Costa Coffee, the Nation’s Favourite Coffee Shop*, is springing into March with an innovative new Flat Family range, putting the smooth Flat White style centre stage. Proudly the first branded UK coffee shop to introduce the Flat White in 2010, the new range of styles and flavours offers exciting new ways to enjoy this speciality drink.

The Costa Coffee Flat Family includes the Flat Mocha, Flat Black, Coconut Flat White and of course the classic Flat White. Each member of the Flat Family is handcrafted by an expert barista using the purest coffee extraction method, a cortissimo shot – 21 grams of coffee extracted over 15 seconds to create a shorter extraction. This process ensures a shorter, purer espresso for a strong but smooth taste, blended with velvety milk that makes a Flat White heavenly and creamy.

Also, on the drinks list this spring is the White Hot Chocolate, making a triumphant return after customers mourned its absence from the Christmas menu. Sweet and warming, it’s the perfect chocolatey treat this Easter. Fans must be quick – it’s available for a limited time only.

Chocoholics will also rejoice as Lindt bunnies hop in store for Easter. Costa Coffee will be giving away a free golden Lindt bunny with the purchase of any hot chocolate.

The new Insta-worthy Easter Choc-O-Crunch is a pastel inspired treat topped with white chocolate in baby pink, powder blue and lemony yellow. Those with a sweet tooth could also choose a Lemon Layer Cake; a triple packed lemon-flavoured sponge, topped with lemon butter frosting and finished with a candied lemon peel kiss.

Costa Coffee will also be rolling out a scrumptious savoury addition to the menu. The Pork Sausage Roll makes the perfect partner for any hot drink at breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Gennaro Pelliccia, Master of Coffee at Costa said: “We’re bouncing into March with the launch of our new seasonal menu. At Costa Coffee we are constantly introducing innovative and exciting ways for customers to enjoy great coffee. We were the first branded coffee shop to introduce the Flat White to the UK in 2010 and we’re looking forward to now sharing new ways to experience the smooth and creamy coffee favourite with the introduction of the Flat Family. There’s something for everyone in the Flat Family – from the Flat Black, for those who prefer their coffee pure, to the Flat Mocha, for those who can’t resist a touch of chocolate.”

ITV announces new partnerships with Costa Coffee and Co-op for Coronation Street

Co-op and Costa Coffee Storefronts To Appear On The Cobbles

LONDON, 2018-Feb-03 — /EPR Retail News/ — ITV today (Jan 30, 2018) announces that it has agreed two significant new partnerships with Costa Coffee and Co-op for Coronation Street. In an ITV first, viewers will see Co-op and Costa Coffee storefronts as part of a new extended Weatherfield set.

Both facades will be fully branded and open for business in Spring 2018 with other assets such as posters, bags and cups integrated across the iconic soap.

The new agreements also include digital and brand-licensing aspects for both brands, enabling them to use Coronation Street assets and extend the partnership off-air.

Mark Trinder, Sales Director, ITV said: “The expansion of the Coronation Street set has given us a great opportunity to feature branded shop facades as more of Weatherfield is opened up to viewers. Incorporating product placement on this scale is something we have wanted to do for some time and we’re delighted with this exciting opportunity. We’ve worked really closely with the Coronation Street team to make sure we’ve got a great brand fit for Co-op and Costa Coffee with the nation’s favourite soap while still ensuring editorial integrity.”

Alison Jones, Customer Director at Co-op said: “Coronation Street is all about community life and the Co-op is a retailer at the heart of local life and being close to the customer, which makes this a perfect match. We are excited about the opportunity to showcase our brand on the world’s most famous street by unveiling a Weatherfield store and having further brand placements with our shopping bags.”

Eric Tavoukdjian, commercial marketing director for Costa Coffee UK&I, said: “Costa Coffee is delighted to be welcomed to the famous cobbles of Coronation Street as part of this innovative partnership with ITV. As the nation’s favourite coffee shop and a presence on the UK high street for more than 40 years, we feel it’s perfect to have a presence on one of the nation’s favourite and most iconic soaps. We’re looking forward to partnering with the ITV team to integrate the Costa Coffee brand into Coronation Street as part of this exciting Weatherfield set extension.”

First broadcast in 1960, Coronation Street is the longest-running soap on British TV and the most watched soap in the country. Product placement (PP) was introduced in the UK in 2011 and ITV led the way with the very first PP on British screens. In the same year the first peak time product placement was introduced in Coronation Street and since then ITV has brought together brands and programmes with PP agreements across the ITV schedule.

Costa Coffee unveils its best ever Christmas menu

London, 2017-Nov-02 — /EPR Retail News/ — The nation’s favourite coffee shop, Costa Coffee, today (Nov 01, 2017) unveils its new festive menu, due to land in stores across the UK from 2 November 2017.

Costa’s best ever Christmas menu is set to bring festive cheer to Christmas shoppers all over the country as the food and drink innovation team have been working harder than Santa’s elves to create the most mouthwatering festive menu to date.

Headlining the drinks menu this year is the Billionaire’s Hot Chocolate, as voted for by Costa Coffee Club members, which includes layers of caramel sauce, a freshly whipped cream topping and shortbread crumbs. Costa was so impressed with the customer’s choice that they decided to expand the Billionaire’s range, including the Billionaire’s Latte which combines Belgian chocolate sauce and caramel sauce with Costa’s signature Mocha Italia Blend.

For the first time ever, Costa will serve its famous Frostinos during the festive season. A decadently creamy cup of frosted deliciousness will be sure to keep fraught festive shoppers cool as they sprint from store to store ticking off their shopping lists. The Billionaire’s Latte Frostino is the perfect chance to be a little bit naughty this Christmas.

It’s not Christmas at Costa without the Black Forest Hot Chocolate, and it is back by popular demand. Joining the family this year is the Black Forest Frostino, a frosty new take on the fan favourite.

Other returning festive favourites include the Gingerbread and Cream Latte, Honeycombe Latte, Mint Hot Chocolate and the bigger and better than last year, rich and creamy Lindt Hot Chocolate.

From winter warmers to tasty Christmas edibles, Costa’s savoury choices are set to get the sleigh bells ringing. Customers can refuel from their Christmas shopping sessions with a Festive Pigs in Blanket Panini or the Creamy Brie, Smoked Bacon & Cranberry Panini.

Christmas sandwich aficionados won’t be disappointed either. The British Turkey Feast, a returning favourite, will be gobbled up in no time, while the Christmas Club Sandwich is packed with festive favourites turkey, sausage, bacon, stuffing and cranberry sauce.

Santa might want Brits to be nice at Christmas but Costa doesn’t mind a bit of naughtiness. This is evident in the delicious new range of sweet treats on offer. This year’s shimmer offering is the Chocolate & Hazelnut Shimmer Cake combining two different sponges and decorated with caramel and gianduja frostings for that touch of seasonal sparkle.

Why should kids get to have all the fun at Christmas? The Rudolph Mini Cake, a sticky toffee sponge filled with salted caramel frosting, is a light-hearted option for parents. Costa also introduces two new loaf cakes to tide customers over at Christmas. The Black Forest Loaf Cake brings the famous hot chocolate to life in edible form, while the Clementine Cream Drizzles’ citrus flavour will remind customers of opening their stockings on Christmas morning.

No one will be left out this year as the vegan Christmas Cake Slice returns, while the new vegan Mince Tart is also gluten-free.

Costa Coffee signs the Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment to accelerate recycling of paper cups in UK

London, 2017-Oct-11 — /EPR Retail News/ — Organisations from across the paper cup supply chain have signed an agreement with the Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment (ACE UK) to accelerate UK recycling of PE lined paper cups. The cross-industry collaboration will work towards delivering a long-term, nationwide paper cup recycling solution which complements and builds on the recycling activities achieved so far by the paper cup industry.

The companies signed up to the agreement are: Benders Paper Cups, Bunzl Catering Supplies, Caffe Nero, Costa Coffee, Dart Products Europe, Greggs, Huhtamaki, International Paper, McDonald’s UK, Nestlé, Pret A Manger, Seda Group, Starbucks, and Stora Enso.

Using ACE UK’s extensive recycling expertise, gained running the beverage carton industry’s recycling programme, the fourteen companies will fund an activity programme which will give many more people access to recycling for paper cups. The programme includes:

From 1st January 2018 all ACE UK bring banks will accept paper cups for recycling, delivering an additional 382 recycling points located in 97 local authorities across the UK. With a further 33 recycling points across an additional eight local authorities scheduled during the next phase.

Cups from these recycling points will be processed at ACE UK’s recycling facility in Halifax.

Drawing on its experience and existing relationships with local authorities, waste management organisations and recycling bodies, ACE UK will work to include cups in local authority kerbside collections. Currently 66% of local authorities collect beverage cartons at kerbside, in addition to those which collect through bring banks, and it is hoped to achieve similar levels of coverage for cups.

ACE UK has been successfully running the beverage carton industry’s recycling programme for the last ten years driving significant increases in carton recycling as part of its role as the UK beverage carton industry trade body. During this time it has worked closely with local authorities and waste management companies so that today 92% of local authorities collect beverage cartons for recycling through either bring banks or kerbside collection.

Commenting on the agreement Richard Hands, CEO of ACE UK said: “The paper cup industry is facing very similar recycling challenges to the ones the beverage carton industry faced when we started our programme ten years ago. Whilst our primary focus will remain on increasing beverage carton recycling, we believe our expertise, experience and existing relationships can help the paper cup industry create a step change in cup recycling. Whilst it is early days, we have a clear measured plan agreed and expect to see significant progress in cup recycling over the next two years and beyond.”

The agreement builds on activities implemented and supported during the last year by the companies involved, such as in-store cup recycling, single site and pilot recycling projects including ‘One More Shot’ and the ‘Square Mile Challenge’.

Neil Whittall Global Category Director of Speciality Coffee at Huhtamaki UK, and chair of the Paper Cup Recycling and Recovery Group (PCRRG) said: “Whilst paper cups are fully recyclable, the industry recognises that many are not being recycled because of a lack of collection facilities. Companies across the industry have been working to address this barrier and increase cup recycling.

“This agreement with ACE UK represents a significant advance in UK recycling infrastructure for paper cups. It will also help us accelerate progress towards the PCRRG’s objective of ensuring the majority of the UK population have access to information, schemes and facilities to allow them to recycle their paper cup, as set out in our Paper Cup Manifesto.”

“Furthermore by generating greater volumes of cups for recycling this will create a market for the material, making cups more attractive to waste management companies and creating the potential for more schemes to be introduced to collect cups from a much wider range of locations such as offices and high street locations.”

Mike Turner MD, International Paper Foodservice Europe and chair of European packaging trade body Pack2Go added: “This collaborative agreement, funded entirely by the signatories, is a clear demonstration of the commitment of these organisations, from across the paper cup supply chain, to address the barriers to recycling and deliver practical solutions to maximise recycling of paper cups.”

Dominic Paul, MD of Costa Coffee, said:

Costa is proud to be a part of today’s ACE UK announcement, which will give our customers more access to recycling points for their takeaway cups.

Using ACE UK’s extensive recycling expertise, which currently allows 92% of local authorities to recover beverage cartons for recycling, the partnership will launch in January 2018.

This ground-breaking agreement will help to further accelerate takeaway cup recycling and compliment the nationwide, in-store recycling scheme we already operate across over 2,200 Costa stores. Since the launch of our in-store recycling in February we have already recovered and are in the process of recycling over 9 million takeaway cups, which includes any competitor cups. We also continue to drive the use of reusable cups and have launched two new multi-purpose cups, offering a 25p discount for customers using any branded reusable cup in store.

About ACE UK

The Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment (ACE UK) provides a platform for the industry to profile and benchmark cartons as a renewable, recyclable and low-carbon packaging choice, and to drive its environmental initiatives. This includes running the industry’s carton recycling programme.

ACE UK represents Tetra Pak, Elopak, SIG Combibloc, the leading manufacturers of beverage cartons for the UK market. It is also supported by BillerudKorsnäs and Stora Enso, which produce about 98% of the paperboard used by ACE UK members to manufacture beverage cartons in Europe.

Costa Coffee opens the doors of its first store in Vietnam located in Da Nang International Airport

  • Store located in Da Nang International Airport
  • Second new Costa Coffee market to open in partnership with Autogrill this year

London, 2017-Oct-06 — /EPR Retail News/ — Costa Coffee, the UK’s Favourite Coffee Shop Brand and the second largest coffee shop operator in the world, has opened the doors of its first store in Vietnam, in Da Nang International Airport. This is the second market opening with Costa Coffees newest global partner Autogrill.

South East Asia is an exciting market for Costa Coffee and this opening marks the start of an ambitious new store openings programme for the region. Last month Costa Coffee opened its first store in Jakarta in Soekarno–Hatta international airport, with a second store planned to open in Jakarta in the coming months.

The new opening has created a number of jobs in the market, with team training taking place in stores in the Philippines, creating an excellent opportunity to bring the brand to life and experience a working Costa Coffee store, with real customers and colleagues. This enabled the teams to pull on local knowledge for service style, develop inter-market relationships, and ensure that the true Costa experience has been brought to Vietnam for the launch.

The food and drink products available in Vietnam were created in line with those served in Jakarta, incorporating core Costa Coffee products as well as blended iced drinks and indulgent Frostinos, such as the Double Chocolate Cookie Mocha. The food range includes Costa classics such as salads, toasties and sandwiches, along side a mix of European and South East Asian decadent cakes, desserts and healthy treats.

Matt Kenley, Head of Costa Coffee South East Asia, said: “We are delighted to extend our global presence with our opening in Vietnam, a dynamic, desirable and thriving country with an established coffee culture. Costa is all about great people and great handcrafted coffee and in partnership with Autogrill we are confident that Costa Coffee will appeal to coffee lovers in Vietnam”

Founded in London by Italian brothers Sergio and Bruno Costa in 1971, Costa is now part of Whitbread PLC, which this year celebrates its 275th Anniversary as a great British business.

With over 2,200 coffee shops in the UK and more than 1,200 in 29 international markets we are the fastest growing coffee shop business in the UK and are proud to be the UK’s favourite coffee shop, having been awarded “Best Branded Coffee Shop Chain in the UK and Ireland” by Allegra Strategies for seven years running (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 & 2015 and 2016).

Costa Coffee hosts 2nd annual reading week, 11th – 17th September 2017

Costa Coffee hosts 2nd annual reading week, 11th – 17th September 2017

Event will take place on 11th – 17th September

Dunstable, United Kingdom, 2017-Sep-07 — /EPR Retail News/ — Costa Coffee stores across the UK are inviting customers to join them in their 2nd annual reading week, taking place from 11th – 17th September 2017. Parents, teachers and children are welcome to come down to the store and enjoy a range of literacy-themed activities on offer that aim to teach children about the environment, while also enjoying a complimentary Babyccino or fruit juice.

Reading Week is held in partnership with the National Literacy Trust, The Police Community Clubs of Great Britain, Keep Britain Tidy and Helping Hand Environmental. Taking place in over 500 stores nationwide, the initiative is designed to spark children’s interest in reading, aiming to tackle low literacy levels across the UK, an issue that is currently said to cost the UK economy £2.5 billion every year.

The 500+ participating stores have been handpicked based on new analysis from the National Literacy Trust and Experian which identifies the areas in England with the greatest vulnerability to literacy problems. Together, they have created a Literacy Vulnerability Score for every electoral ward and parliamentary constituency in England. This combines the charity’s understanding of the socioeconomic factors most closely associated with low literacy – such as education, income and unemployment – with Experian’s data expertise. The Literacy Vulnerability Score pinpoints the areas in England with the most acute literacy problems and where the greatest level of support is required.

The Litter Heroes booklet will be available to read in store and have been specially created for Costa Reading Week, featuring a new story from Barney & Echo about litter and responsibility in our communities. Environmental activity packs will also be available for children to complete, and have been designed to help stimulate young minds to begin to think about their environment and how sustainability can impact their personal choices. Costa team members will be on hand to act as reading hosts and encourage parents and carers to spend time sharing stories with their children. Helping Hand Environmental will also be running a Design Your Own Litter Picker competition where the winning entrant will have their design manufactured for them to keep.

“Reading Week is part of a wider initiative established to enable Costa’s team members to make a difference to their local communities,” said Sandy Gourlay, Charity and Community Manager, Costa Coffee,“building on our commitment to the literacy agenda, we are thrilled to be able to work with partners to welcome young people to our stores this week to enjoy a good book.”

Head of Partnerships at the National Literacy Trust, Lisa Rootes, added, “We have recently commissioned a report which reveals that 86% of all English constituencies have at least one ward with significant literacy problemsLacking vital literacy skills holds a person back at every stage of their life, having a significant impact on their career prospects and their chances of success. This lovely initiative looks to address literacy issues from the heart of the community, which is a fantastic place to take action.”

Costa employees will also donate approximately 30,000 ‘Barney and Echo’ books, provided by the Police Community Clubs of Great Britain, directly to their local schools. Ian Jackson, UK Project Director for Police Community Clubs, described the partnership: “Working with the team at Costa is incredibly rewarding. Their commitment to their communities coupled with their boundless energy and enthusiasm has been instrumental in creating Costa Reading Week. This week-long in-store activity will have benefits for children not only in educating them about their own environment, but will by allowing them the joy of spending quality time reading with a parent, teacher or guardian. I’m certain that this fun and worthwhile project will stay with them as a positive experience throughout their young lives.”

Keep Britain Tidy, a charity partner of Costa, plays a role in increasing the long-term impact of Reading Week, by encouraging participating stores to work towards a prestigious Eco-School qualification.

Lee Wray-Davies, Eco-Schools Manager, Keep Britain Tidy, commented: “We are delighted to be supporting Costa’s Reading Week this year. If we are to prevent the littering and waste that blights our country and our planet, educating the next generation so that they do better than we have done is vital. The key messages and lessons delivered through Reading Week are very much in line with our Eco-Schools programme; using stories to show what can be done to tackle the issue of litter is a fantastic way to get the message across.”

Helping Hand Environmental will provide further valuable resources, from litter pickers to information booklets, to support schools in setting up their own litter clubs. Lindsay Richmond, Communities Partnerships Manager for Helping Hand Environmental, also commented: “Helping Hand are super proud to be involved in such a worthwhile project to engage young minds in a fun and interactive way, learning new literacy and environmental skills both in the classroom and at their local Costa store. We are delighted again to be working with Costa – a business totally committed to making our world a better place”

A participating Costa Coffee Store Manager said: “Many teachers and parents are our customers and we are excited to welcome them and their children in store next week, to encourage children to engage with our books and hopefully demonstrate how just a few minutes a day spent reading can be hugely beneficial to a child’s development.”

Costa Coffee launches its biggest ever campaign and new promise ‘Never a Dull Cup’

London, 2016-Oct-10 — /EPR Retail News/ — Costa Coffee today (Oct 07, 2016) launches its new promise, ‘Never a Dull Cup’, with its biggest ever campaign that premieres on Saturday 8th October during the first X Factor live show.

The promise builds on what has seen Costa become the nation’s favourite coffee shop, delivering handcrafted, barista-made coffee to over a million customers every day through over 2,000 stores and 20,000 baristas.

Since being founded by brothers Bruno and Sergio Costa in 1971, Costa has been at the forefront of Britain’s growing love affair with better coffee, not least when it became the first national chain to launch the Flat White in 2011. At the heart of the company’s success has been its team of passionate baristas, committed to bringing exciting coffee to every corner of Britain.

But while Britain is now undoubtedly a nation of coffee-lovers, Costa believes there is much more to do. From shining a spotlight on unfamiliar drinks like the Cortado through to bringing new coffee experiences to its customers, the launch of Costa’s new promise affirms its commitment to bringing exciting coffee to every customer who walks through its doors.

To mark the launch, Costa is turning the spotlight on its baristas, the heroes of the company and the people who make that promise a reality. In the showcase TV spot, 170 Costa baristas are the enthusiastic audience for actor Javone Prince’s attempts to launch Costa’s new mission (despite some fairly unorthodox methods). The spot was originally created as a film for baristas up and down the country, but will roll out across TV, VOD, cinema and digital media from Saturday 8th October, and be accompanied by outdoor, social, CRM and in-store activity.

The campaign has been created by independent London agency, 101, and constitutes the agency’s first work for the brand. Media planning and buying is led by ZenithOptimedia, with further complementary work in other channels being led by AnalogFolk, OneGreenBean, The Real Adventure and SP.

Throughout 2017, the campaign will look to extend into new product launches, digital innovation and further investment in-store – all aimed at making coffee interesting, exciting and accessible to all.

Costa Coffee UK Marketing Director, Caroline Harris, commented: “This is an exciting moment for Costa – the launch of our new promise, as well as the biggest campaign in the brand’s history, is just the start of what we have planned. I’m particularly delighted to see our baristas take centre stage in our new TV commercial, as they really are the heroes of our business.

“In Costa’s 45-year history, our aim has always been to make better coffee available to more people and inspire them with the variety of coffee on offer.”

Comedian and actor Javone Prince, who features in the TV commercial, said: “It was inspiring to work with such an enthusiastic team; their passion for coffee is palpable. They take genuine pride in their work and I don’t blame them – there’s more to making a Flat White than meets the eye. I’m thrilled at how the advert has turned out – considering it stars real Costa baristas, their comedy timing was spot on!”

As part of its recommitment to create exciting coffee experiences for our customers, Costa has launched nationwide Flat White Masterclasses for Costa Coffee Club members. In addition, the next limited edition Old Paradise Street blend, OPS 17 is available in stores for customers to enjoy. Costa is the UK’s favourite coffee shop, having been awarded “Best Branded Coffee Shop Chain in the UK and Ireland” by Allegra Strategies for six years running (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 & December 2015).

LONDON,, 2016-Aug-04 — /EPR Retail News/ — Over 14,000 Costa team members across the UK as well as customers and suppliers, have come together to help Costa Coffee achieve a £10 million fundraising milestone for the Costa Foundation.

The Costa Foundation is an independent charity that aims to relieve poverty in coffee-growing communities. Its mission is to improve the life chances of children by providing them with the opportunity for a quality education. Since its launch in 2007 the Costa Foundation has supported 56 much needed school projects across nine countries – building or extending school buildings and providing essential facilities and equipment including connecting water supplies and supplying computers.

The biggest Costa Foundation project is in La Palma, Colombia, which has suffered decades of civil conflict. The ongoing issues have seen as many as 80% of the community displaced, having left their homes and families to seek temporary shelter in part of the jungle. To assist residents in re-building their lives back in La Palma, the Costa Foundation has built a community school with up to 10 classrooms, which will aim to serve both adults and children and provide local support and stability.

The Costa Foundation also provides funding for extracurricular citizenship lessons in HIV/AIDS awareness, gender equality, environment, sports and public speaking. These lessons have enabled forced marriage to be completely abolished in two communities in Ethiopia where the Costa Foundation operates, helping to challenge the traditional viewpoint that a girl is considered “ready” for marriage once she reaches puberty.

Dominic Paul, Managing Director at Costa, said: “It is amazing to see our passionate team across the UK come together to reach this target with the support of our customers and suppliers. At Costa we strive to be an integral part of the community and the Costa Foundation has a tremendous impact on the lives of people living in coffee growing areas, improving social and economic welfare through education. We are extremely proud that we can contribute £10 million to make a real difference to these communities.”

Fundraising activities include around 140 people hiking Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Mount Snowdon to achieve the iconic Three Peaks Challenge, as well Foundation Fortnight, taking place between 22nd August and 4th September 2016, an annual event where stores across the UK and Ireland participate in fundraising activities showcasing the Costa Foundations work and the importance of the charity.

The Costa Foundation currently funds facilitates and benefits communities in areas including Colombia, Costa Rica, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Honduras, Peru, Nicaragua, Vietnam and Uganda.
