Dorothy Perkins Announces New Collection Designed By Olivia Rubin

Dorothy Perkins has revealed the launch of a new collection entitled ‘A Postcard From’ by London-based designer Olivia Rubin. The collection will appear exclusively in Dorothy Perkins’ top 25 stores and online.

‘A Postcard From’ is inspired by Olivia’s memories of her travels and aims to evoke a mood of summer fun. The new collection will include dresses, tops, swimwear and accessories, all featuring Olivia’s signature prints. In addition to its bright pink shades, the collection’s colour palette includes neutral tones of grey and pastels. With these soft colours expected to make a big splash in SS12, the collection represents a fresh, young point of view that’s very much on-trend.

Known for her distinctive prints, Olivia brings her signature patterning to the collection. It includes an array of jersey with blush-coloured shells, bikinis and beach bags with bold coral designs and chiffon maxi dresses with tropical bird prints.

Olivia’s collection also features many of her signature silhouettes, which have been seen on a range of popular female celebrities in recent years. The collection is aimed to flatter every woman, with sizes ranging from 8 to 18.

The collection is also an opportunity for fans of Olivia to wear her looks at affordable, high street prices. The accessibility of the range and the inclusion of versatile accessories is what has excited Olivia most about the collection.

Olivia commented on her collection: “I’m so excited to be working with Dorothy Perkins and to bring my designs to the high street. The collection focuses on strong yet simple silhouettes, as I always design feminine shapes with an original take, in order to create a versatile piece that can become a wardrobe staple. Also I have introduced jewelry and swimwear to the range, which will be the first time I have added accessories to one of my collections.”

Burton Introduces the Montague Burton Collection

Burton has introduced the Montague Burton collection for autumn/winter 2011, a carefully edited clothing range that draws on Burton’s heritage as a British brand with over 100 years’ worth of history and style archives. The Montague Burton collection includes stylish men’s jackets, coats, jumpers, cardigans, Burton suits and men’s accessories.

Jackets and coats form the basis of this heritage collection for the cold weather months. Based on jackets and coats from the brand’s first designs, their authenticity is maintained by being made in the same British mills and with the same British fabrics as they were in the early 1900’s. Tweed and herringbone feature heavily within the collection, giving the range a country feel, and extra details like suede elbow patches add to the look and define them as heritage-inspired pieces.

In keeping with the mood of the season, colours are typically autumnal, with warm greens and browns offset with neutral based camels, stones and oatmeals. Texture is a key focus for the Montague Burton collection for autumn/winter too, with lots of chunky jumpers and cardigans on offer. Whilst heavy cable knit jumpers are a practical way to keep warm in the colder months, they also look the part and are very on-trend this season.

The Montague Burton collection offers a smart kind of casual wear that is more classic and traditional than Burton’s mainstream men’s clothing, and features tailoring too – the very way in which Burton made its name all those years ago. Burton’s mens suits continue to be as premium looking as ever. They are designed to be fashionable but entirely wearable. A Montague Burton suit is an investment item that can be an occasion suit for years to come.

Aside from the main Montague Burton line, there are also accessories to complement the pieces from the rest of the collection or to act as standout items when mixed with regular Burton clothing. The salt and pepper tweed holdalls, knitted scarves and woollen flat caps are all classic men’s accessories not only for the autumn/winter season but, like the tailoring, they’re smart enough to wear season after season.

Debenhams Reveals Holidaymakers Wear Their Luggage To Pocket The Savings

Debenhams has revealed budget flight passengers escaping the British weather are picking the pockets of airlines thanks to a loophole in the baggage rules.

Debenhams logo - links to home page

Rather than pay expensive charges for stowing suitcases in the hold of the plane, canny holidaymakers are using their free hand luggage allowance and “wearing” the rest of their baggage, according to fashion retailer Debenhams, who have seen sales rise of coats and jackets with multiple pockets by as much as 135% over the holiday period.

After cramming what would be excess baggage into pockets, customers could gain a whopping ten pounds to their original body weight; saving themselves from the extortionate fees.

Debenhams is putting the new trend down to reports from the shop floor that customers prefer to pack heavier items such as books, cameras and electronic net books, into large pocketed garments, rather than pay fees up to £40 return, charged by some low-cost airlines for cases stowed in the hold.

As a result sales of Debenhams J by Jasper Conran jacket with seven pockets have gone up by 135% and the Maine New England parka jacket which has six pockets has also seen sales leap by 29%.

Research found that the biggest sales of the multi pocket jackets came from Leeds, London, Newcastle and Aberdeen, closely followed by Dublin.

Vicky Hewitt, spokeswoman for Debenhams, said: “Our sales assistants have even reported some customers coming in with specific items like net-books and paperbacks, to check if they will fit in the pockets before they buy the coat or jacket.

“With the right jacket and trouser combo you can gain up to 11 handy pockets to tuck away holiday essentials; but beware when reaching into pockets so those extra undies aren’t spotted on the floor of Terminal 5.”

Passengers can pay dearly for going over the luggage weight limits, for instance BMI charges £7 per kg, Thomson up to £15 per kg and Ryanair £20 per kg, for excess baggage.

Multi-pocket jackets available at Debenhams include: J by Jasper Conran grey jacket with seven pockets; Maine New England taupe short parka jacket with six pockets; and Red Herring four pocket plum quilted jacket.

Debenhams Reports Miami Vice Chic Returning To The British High Street

Debenhams has reported that trends first made popular by the 1980s TV cop series Miami Vice are coming back into fashion, thanks to young men who weren’t even born when the series was first broadcast.

Debenhams logo - links to home page

The return of the look, first noticed by Debenhams in May, has seen demand for Miami Vice style espadrilles leaping by an incredible 197 per cent over the last three months alone. In the same period, chinos have risen by 94 per cent and light colour sports jackets have grown by 500 per cent.

T-shirts worn under formal mens jackets, pastel shades, rolled up sleeves, and mens shoes worn without socks – forever associated with heart-throb hero Don Johnson – have become top sellers once again, according to high street chain Debenhams.

Lizzie Singleton, spokesperson for Debenhams said: “Who could have predicted that the style would prove so popular thirty years after the programme started? Young men are still looking to emulate the classic American look. In fact, the T-shirt under jacket look has never managed to go away.”

Miami Vice (broadcast during the 1980s) was one of the most popular TV programmes ever. It won a worldwide audience and persuaded an entire generation of men that designer stubble and pastel shades were the height of fashion.

The style – perfect attire for sunny Florida where the series was set – has become the norm for British men going on a night out in Newcastle, Cardiff and Aberdeen, where the look has proved most popular.

Debenhams menswear design team believe that current TV presenters such as T4’s Rick Edwards and Nick Grimshaw, as well as George Lamb and designer Henry Holland may have encouraged the acceptability of the look.

Lizzie Singleton continued: “We’re not surprised that Miami Vice chic has undergone a revival. Light pastel colours, loose jackets and casual tees suit all physiques. Dressing like you are on Miami South beach is also a great way to cheer you up after a wash-out of an August.”

Debenhams Announces the Return of the Short Suit

Debenhams has revealed that ‘Just William’ style blazers worn with matching shorts are up 500 per cent on last year, thanks to grown men sporting the look on high streets and in offices across the country.

Debenhams logo - links to home page

The surprise style hit of the summer, tailored short suits have been deemed smart enough for work yet cool enough for public transport, leading to a sales boom throughout the warm weather.

Spotted on the SS11 catwalks of Louis Vuitton, Jean Paul Gaultier and Dries Van Noten, this is one trend that has definitely made the leap to the great British high street.

The short suit is now available in all manner of fabrics and colours from powder blue linen through to black pinstripe cotton.

In fact, the most popular short suit has proved to be light blue, 100% linen Jeff Banks knee-length shorts and matching jackets which have been the store’s top selling menswear product for two weeks running already.

Men are typically wearing short suits with deck shoes – perfect for the tricky smart casual dress code.

Debenhams spokesperson, Ruth Attridge said: “We have heard about the emergence of ‘mankles’ – male ankles peeking out from rolled up trousers. Well, this takes it to the next level.

“All over the world, British men are renowned for exposing their white knobbly knees during the summer holidays. We want this great tradition to continue whether you are jetsetting, staycationing or off to work.”

The look was debuted by AC/DC lead guitarist Angus Young in the seventies and eighties but it wasn’t until recent shots of celebrities including tennis player Roger Federer, designer Henry Holland and The Only Way is Essex’s Mark Wright appeared that the fashion really took off.

Attridge continued: “For the daring few, wearing a short suit can be liberating experience, particularly when faced with the tropic temperatures of a morning commute.

“A certain level of confidence is needed to carry off this style however, and avoid teaming it with a tie and cap. You don’t want to look like Wee Jimmy Krankie.”

Debenhams sells over 300 varieties of men’s shorts, ranging from £13 to £65 in sizes 28 to 44.

For the true fashion photography fan, Dazed Digital will be hosting four workshops on ‘Fashion Photography in the Digital Age’ in stores. Debenhams Reveals The World’s Most Unlikely Fashion Icon

Debenhams has revealed the world’s most unlikely fashion icon, as the grumpy and notoriously badly dressed hill walker Alfred Wainwright becomes the driving force behind a new dress code appearing on British streets.

Alfred Wainwright’s famous Lake District guides appears to have inspired so many to follow in his footsteps that niche, all-weather clothing styles have made the giant leap from crag edge to the catwalk, according to fashion store Debenhams.

Demand for hiking style jackets, trousers, t-shirts, socks, rucksacks and boots has soared over the last two years following a series of television and radio programmes about Wainwright and his life.

Debenhams Director of Menswear Buying, Paul Baldwin, commented: “We’re calling it ‘Wainwright Chic’. Men and women have fallen in love with the rugged outdoor image the hill climbing clothing style portrays, and want to wear it every day.

“At one time, these specialist clothes would have been bought only by long distance hill walkers and mountaineers.

“Now, however, you’re more likely to see them worn on the streets of Kensington and Chelsea than Scafell or Grisedale Pike”.

The greatest irony is that Wainwright himself had a somewhat eclectic taste in men’s clothing. Many of his epic walks were conducted in an ancient flat cap and a battered, belted coat worn over a frumpy Fair Isle jumper which had seen better days. Badly fitting trousers held up by style-less braces were tucked into thick, grey woollen socks, which he allowed to accumulate in a haphazard manner, around the tops of crude but functional boots.

Burton Is Celebrating The Resurgence Of The 80’s And The Reuniting Of Ska Legends ‘The Specials’, With The Launch Of A Limited Edition Tonic Suit

With the 80’s making a forceful statement on the high street once again, the men’s fashion world is drawing influence from many cultural facets, from art to music. To celebrate this new trend and the 30th anniversary tour of cult band The Specials, Burton has designed two new exclusive versions of their classic tonic suit and used key design elements from their archives to create the new ‘Mod’ suit.

More prevalent than with other musical styles, achieving exactly the right look has always been a defining part of the Mod and Ska movement. Sharp suits with precise lines and clean cut styling epitomized the look of 2 Tone, and now with the reforming of The Specials to celebrate their 30th anniversary, the look is also set to make its return.

Available in deep blue and charcoal, the limited edition suit is 100% wool and has an extra finish which creates a slight sheen to give it the tonic look. The style is a one button single breasted slim fit jacket with a narrow peak lapel, while the trouser is narrower on the calf and thigh and at just £99 makes it an affordable style essential for every man. Slim fit tonic waistcoats can be added to help finish the classic ‘Rude Boy’ look.

The Specials tour will see the 2 Tone Coventry Gangsters getting suited and booted again in their iconic suits as they tour 6 venues across England and Scotland in April and May.

The limited edition Burton Tonic Suits will be available in the Bath, Poole, Bluewater, White City, New Enfield, Portsmouth, Liverpool, Swansea, and Braehead stores, as well as online.

Following The Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling’s decision to cut Value Added Tax (VAT) from 17.5 per cent to 15 per cent, Sir Philip Green’s Arcadia Group has released a statement on behalf of a group of the high street’s most powerful retailers, confirming they will pass the full VAT cut onto their customers.

The change in the VAT rate will mean huge changes for all the shops in the Arcadia group, as all shelving and register prices will need to be updated. However, Burton, Arcadia, Mosaic Fashions, Bhs, Marks & Spencer, New Look and Next all confirmed in the statement they planned to pass the 2.5% VAT cut on to customers on Monday, or soon afterwards.

The statement by Sir Philip said: “Following the recent announcement reducing VAT from 17.5% to 15%, equating to a price reduction of 2.13%, we are pleased to confirm that it is our intention to pass the benefit of this reduction onto our customers.”

The price reduction will be given on standard rated product and will be applied on, or as soon after Monday December 1 as possible.

The statement added that this would, “allow for the complexities of implementing the changes required.”

It is unclear how the price cuts will be implemented, however many retailers are expected to take off the discount at the till point rather than by re-ticketing stock.

For Burton, all mens clothing, mens suits and mens accessories will be adjusted at point of purchase as of 1st December 2008.

Burton Announces Their New Heritage Collection, A Stylish Range Of Quality Contemporary Suiting, Born Out Of A Passion For Traditional Tailoring Methods

Burton, the leading UK menswear retailer, has announced their new Heritage collection. This latest range of stylish quality contemporary suiting is born out of the long held Burton passion for traditional tailoring methods. The collection will be featured in selected stores and online throughout the UK this autumn alongside Burton’s mainline and concession tailoring.

Burton has sought to ensure attention to detail is key throughout the Heritage collection.

These latest mens jackets feature a half canvas construction which forms to the body to give the wearer more comfort. The fabric selections reflect a strong attention to detail with the use of traditional Prince of Wales check and pin stripes inspired by the Burton mens clothing archives.

The fabric selection and labeling of the mens suits take their inspiration from original 1940s, 50s and 60s Burton garments which are then brought up to date with a sharper modern fit. The suits are made from pure merino wool and woven in the British mill first used by Montague Burton over 70 years ago and feature intricate detailing such as trouser brace buttons and an embroidered Burton “B” on the under collar.

Montage Burton once said, “Good clothes develop a man’s sense of self respect”, and the Heritage collection continues his legacy by offering a superior garment at an accessible price.
