DICK’S Sporting Goods recognized with ESPN’s Corporate Community Impact Award for its Sports Matter initiative

DICK’S and the DICK’S Foundation Honored for Commitment to  Helping Save Youth Sports at ESPN’s Sports Humanitarian of the Year Awards

PITTSBURGH, 2017-Jul-17 — /EPR Retail News/ — DICK’S Sporting Goods (NYSE: DKS) and The DICK’S Sporting Goods Foundation, which supports DICK’S charitable and philanthropic activities, were honored last night at ESPN’s third annual Sports Humanitarian of the Year Awards ceremony in Los Angeles.  DICK’S received ESPN’s Corporate Community Impact Award for their Sports Matter initiative. Developed in 2014, Sports Matter provides equipment, uniforms and monetary donations to youth sports teams in need, and raises awareness surrounding the decline in funding for youth sports nation-wide.

The ESPN Corporate Community Impact Award recognizes a corporation that uses the power of sports to help advance a social issue, cause or community organization. DICK’S was honored for their long-standing commitment to sports and actions in helping to save youth sports.

“It’s a tremendous honor for us to receive this important award from ESPN” said Lauren Hobart, DICK’S Sporting Goods President & President of the DICK’S Foundation. “Youth sports are in trouble.  Studies tell us that billions of dollars have been cut from youth sports in recent years and 60% of children must now pay a fee to play. Yet sports are one of the best youth development tools that exist, so we’re working hard to reverse this frightening trend.”

DICK’S and The DICK’S Foundation have been working to combat this crisis and since 2014 have pledged more than $50 million to support teams and leagues in need, while working to raise awareness of the importance of youth sports across the country through the Sports Matter campaign. To date, Sports Matter has saved thousands of youth sports teams and given hundreds of thousands of kids the opportunity to play.

In 2016, DICK’S integrated Sports Matter into its major initiatives and campaigns, including the creation of the Sport Emmy nominated documentary Keepers of the Game, by supporting over 200 Team USA Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls through flexible employment, and the development of a ‘Green Laces’ campaign which donates $2 from every sale back to youth sports.

DICK’S Sporting Goods launches Sports Matter green shoelace movement as part of its fight against youth sports funding crisis

Dexter Fowler, Jennie Finch, Isaiah Thomas and others have joined the sporting goods retailer to support the sale of green laces with two dollars from every purchase going to The DICK’S Sporting Goods Foundation’s Sports Matter program

PITTSBURGH, 2016-Nov-22 — /EPR Retail News/ — DICK’S Sporting Goods, a leading omni-channel sporting goods retailer, announced today (November 21, 2016) the launch of a Sports Matter green shoelace movement as part of its fight against the youth sports funding crisis.

Billions of dollars have been cut from youth sports funding in recent years and 27% of U.S. public high schools may not have any sports programs by 2020(1). DICK’S and The DICK’S Sporting Goods Foundation have pledged more than $50 million to support teams and raise awareness of this issue since 2014, and to date, have helped nearly 2,000 youth sports teams.

Those who want to be part of the movement to help save youth sports can purchase Sports Matter green shoelaces at any DICK’S store nationwide or on dicks.com. DICK’S will donate two dollars from every shoelace sale to The DICK’S Sporting Goods Foundation’s Sports Matter program, which is dedicated to helping to save underfunded youth sports programs. Laces are available in oval and flat varieties and in various lengths.

Customers can show their support socially as well by taking a picture of their casual or athletic shoes or cleats laced up with green shoelaces and use #SaveYouthSports.

“At DICK’S, we know the holiday season is a special time of year where people are inspired to make a difference,” said Lauren Hobart, Executive Vice President & Chief Marketing Officer, DICK’S Sporting Goods and President of The DICK’S Sporting Goods Foundation. “This holiday, we want to give our customers a meaningful way to feel like they’re part of something bigger – part of the movement that we’re leading to fight the youth sports funding crisis in our country.”

In addition to purchasing green laces, customers can also be a part of this movement by donating to The DICK’S Sporting Goods Foundation when checking-out in-store during the holiday season now through January 8. All money donated will help to raise awareness for and support underfunded youth sports programs. For more information, visit SportsMatter.org.

To highlight the benefits of youth sports for kids across the country, DICK’S has profiled the Fifth Ward Saints football organization located in the Fifth Ward outside of Houston, Texas in a short film. The film shows the importance of football in the lives of generations of Houston-area kids. As a surprise, the film ends with The DICK’S Sporting Goods Foundation donating a $100,000 grant, including new equipment, as a gift that matters to these kids. The grant will ensure the program is able to operate through the year 2020. To view the film, please visit SportsMatter.com/greenlaces.

DICK’S Community program is also partnering with 10 youth organizations this holiday season. Young athletes from these organizations will get to shop with local sports heroes and receive the Sports Matter shoelaces to join the green shoelace movement. Cam Newton, Larry Fitzgerald and Joe Thomas are among the athletes who may participate in these special holiday shopping events.

DICK’S Sporting Goods launches its first Team USA-themed TV and digital advertisements

  • New creative tells the story of the sacrifice and dedication of U.S. Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls participating in the retailer’s in-store employment program

PITTSBURGH, 2016-Apr-12 — /EPR Retail News/ — DICK’S Sporting Goods (NYSE: DKS), the largest U.S.-based, full-line omni-channel sporting goods retailer, today launched its first Team USA-themed TV and digital advertisements as part of its sponsorship of the U.S. Olympic Committee.

The inspiring creative celebrates the journey and sacrifice made by Team USA hopefuls in their pursuit of their Olympic and Paralympic dreams. Campaign elements tell the story of the grit and determination shown by five Team USA hopefuls who work in DICK’S Sporting Goods stores as part of the Company’s Contenders program, which provides flexible work schedules and competitive compensation to qualified athletes.

The athletes featured in the commercial are a small portion of DICK’S roster of nearly 200 U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Contenders across 35 sports who are currently employed at 89 stores in 32 states. Athletes featured in the 60-second commercial include:

  • Jon Jones (Track & Field – Shot Put) – Jones, who works in the team sports and fitness departments at a DICK’S Sporting Goods in Amherst, N.Y. is the reigning NCAA Champion in shot put. The recent University of Buffalo graduate became the school’s first-ever NCAA track and field national champion. Since graduating, the 24-year-old has turned his attention to international competition where he placed fifth at the 2015 Pan-American Games in Toronto and earned a gold medal at NACAC Senior Area Championships in Costa Rica.
  • Jessica Medina (Wrestling) – The 29-year-old Medina is currently ranked as the number three woman in the U.S. in her weight class. Born in Chicago and raised in California, she has brought home several podium finishes in U.S. and international competition. She works at an Arizona-based DICK’S Sporting Goods.
  • Desiree Miller (Wheelchair Basketball) – 28-year-old Desiree Miller has already represented Team USA at the London 2012 Paralympic Games where she and the women’s wheelchair basketball team placed fourth. When she isn’t training or competing with her team, she works in the team sports department at a Madison, Wis. DICK’S Sporting Goods.
  • Laura Ryan (Diving) – Laura Ryan works at a Georgia DICK’S Sporting Goods while she trains to represent Team USA in Rio. The 23-year-old University of Georgia graduate has won several collegiate and national titles and plans to attend physician’s assistant school on top of working, training and competing.
  • N’aithan Scott (Track & Field – Hurdles) – Scott, a U.S. Olympic hopeful in the 110m hurdles, works at an Arizona-based DICK’S Sporting Goods. In addition to his grueling training each day, he is a father of two and regularly volunteers to help teach children the importance of nutrition and exercise.

“Each and every one of these athletes is truly an inspiration and living proof of how sports make people better,” said Lauren Hobart, Executive Vice President & Chief Marketing Officer, DICK’S Sporting Goods. “Telling their stories and providing an opportunity for our customers to get incredible advice and insight from them in our stores is something we’re proud to do.”

Over the course of the next few months, DICK’S will also debut numerous pieces of original content that tell the stories of more Contenders and give a deeply personal and intimate look at what it takes to make Team USA.

“As a competing athlete, it really means a lot to me what DICK’S is doing for Team USA Contenders. The ability to have a job that works around my training schedule is absolutely amazing,” said 2012 U.S. Paralympian and DICK’S Sporting Goods Contender Desiree Miller. “There is so much hard work and sacrifice that goes into earning a gold medal and working for a company that understands that is really special to an athlete like me.”

To supplement the support that DICK’S is providing to this current group of Contenders, the DICK’S Sporting Goods Foundation has also announced a commitment to support the next generation of Contenders.

For every Olympic and Paralympic Games medal that Team USA wins in Rio, the DICK’S Foundation will donate $1,000 to select youth sports organizations who are part of the USOC family to ensure future Contenders are able to play the sports they love. Each of the DICK’S Sporting Goods Contenders will have the opportunity to select an organization that will benefit from this program. A full list of benefitting organizations will be announced at a later date.

“Providing support for future Contenders is something that fully aligns with our brand beliefs and community-focused efforts around youth sports,” said Hobart, who also serves as President of the DICK’S Foundation. “Since its inception in 2014, the DICK’S Sporting Goods Foundation’s Sports Matter program has provided a platform to address the youth sports funding crisis and show just how important youth sports are to our country. This pledge to donate $1,000 for every medal that Team USA wins at the Olympic and Paralympic Games is an exciting extension of those efforts.”

The new advertisements and newly announced financial commitment are just the beginning of a full set of marketing activations and original content from DICK’S leading up to Team USA competing in the Olympic and Paralympic Games. DICK’S will also release a documentary later this summer that provides an inside look into the journey of Contender Kerri Walsh Jennings as she chases her fourth gold medal for Team USA during the 2016 Olympic Games. Additional original content will be announced over the next few months.

To house all of this content, and to serve as an online home for the Contenders program, DICK’S has launched dicks.com/TheContenders. This website will provide fans with profiles of the Team USA Contenders, updates on their Olympic and Paralympic Games journey and track the Team USA medal count and corresponding donation amount to the various, benefiting youth sports organizations.

DICK’S Sporting Goods announced its roster of more than 180 U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Contenders

The sporting goods retailer is supporting a roster of athletes on their quest to be part of Team USA

PITTSBURGH, 2016-1-6 — /EPR Retail News/ — DICK’S Sporting Goods (NYSE: DKS), the official sporting goods retail sponsor of Team USA, announced today its roster of more than 180 U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Contenders being supported by the Company through flexible employment opportunities and sponsorship agreements.

To date, over 170 Contenders are currently working in 87 DICK’S Sporting Goods stores in 31 states across the country. The Contenders are offered flexible work schedules and competitive compensation, allowing them to devote the necessary time to training to be part of Team USA at future Olympic or Paralympic Games. Athletes from 36 different sports, across both Olympic and Paralympic, summer and winter events, are participating in the program.

“We’re honored to provide these inspiring athletes with what they need – a flexible source of income – to pursue their Olympic and Paralympic dreams,” said Lauren Hobart, Executive Vice President & Chief Marketing Offer, DICK’S Sporting Goods. “At the same time, the Contenders are able to offer our customers their expertise as elite athletes. We have had such positive feedback on the program, from the Contenders, our customers and their fellow associates. It’s truly a win-win.”

DICK’S announced a multi-faceted partnership last February, which included the in-store employment program, sporting goods and equipment donations to the U.S. Olympic Training Centers and sponsorships to Team USA hopefuls to help them pursue their Olympic and Paralympic dreams.

To date, 11 additional Contenders, outside of the in-store employment program, have been provided with sponsorships from DICK’S Sporting Goods to support their journey to make Team USA, including 2016 U.S. Olympic Team hopeful Kerri Walsh Jennings and 2016 U.S. Paralympic Team hopeful Lex Gillette.
