Meijer announces Stacy London as style consultant for its women’s clothing line, Massini

Meijer announces Stacy London as style consultant for its women’s clothing line, Massini

First time retailer enlists celebrity endorsement for its Massini fashion line

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., 2017-Jan-26 — /EPR Retail News/ — Meijer announced today (January 25, 2017) that it tapped Stacy London, one of America’s foremost style experts, to help shape the style direction for its on-trend women’s clothing line, Massini. London is best known as the co-host of TLC’s “What Not to Wear” and “Love Lust or Run,” and is a New York Times best-selling author.

“We continue to make strides to enhance our women’s clothing department – from integrating plus-size apparel to infusing more on-trend designs within our Massini line,” said Peter Whitsett, Executive Vice President of Merchandising and Marketing for Meijer. “We are thrilled to partner with Stacy because she has a knack for quickly creating an emotional connection, and is committed to helping all women feel beautiful and confident regardless of size. We feel Stacy’s philosophy compliments the fundamental inspiration behind Massini.”

Meijer first introduced the Massini brand in October 1986 as sophisticated sportswear for men and boys. Over time, the brand evolved, and in 2005, included lipstick, nail polish, and fashion accessories like hats, scarves, jewelry and watches. Today, the Massini brand is specific to women’s apparel, which London will influence.

In her role, London will serve as a style consultant to help the Meijer Style team continue its focus to evolve the Massini line with affordable trends for everyday wear.

“I am excited to work with the Massini line because the designs inspire women to create a look all of their own,” London said. “There’s a common misbelief that trends only look good on a specific body type or are limited to youth. This is not true. There are no limits. You can wear a trend regardless of your age or body type. I love helping women connect the dots.”

The partnership is the latest in the retailer’s ongoing efforts to draw customers from the grocery aisles to its upgraded apparel offerings. In 2014, Meijer unveiled its fresh approach with regional advertising in national magazines like InStyle, Cosmopolitan and Elle, and by showcasing its on-trend apparel on MeijerStyle.com. In October 2016, Meijer continued to build upon its investment in apparel by announcing a ground-breaking initiative to integrate the plus-size departments in each of its 230 stores into missy and women’s, with all sizes on one rack at the same price.

Meijer to place sizes S-3X apparel on the same rack giving customers of all sizes the opportunity to shop together

Meijer to place sizes S-3X apparel on the same rack giving customers of all sizes the opportunity to shop together
Meijer to place sizes S-3X apparel on the same rack giving customers of all sizes the opportunity to shop together

Retailer offers ground-breaking shopping experience by placing sizes S-3X on the same rack

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., 2016-Nov-02 — /EPR Retail News/ — Building upon its investment in apparel, Grand Rapids, Mich.-based retailer Meijer is announcing a new, inclusive shopping experience that will give customers of all sizes the opportunity to shop together.

By early 2017, plus-size departments in each of the retailer’s 230 stores across the Midwest will be integrated into missy and women’s, placing straight and extended sizes on one rack. As an industry leader in making this change, Meijer is proud to create a shopping experience based on trends, not size.

“Over the past few years, we’ve placed an increased focus on bringing more on-trend, affordable apparel to our customers,” said Peter Whitsett, executive vice president of merchandising and marketing. “This fresh approach to shopping represents a continuation of that commitment, giving our customers the trends they’re looking for, regardless of what size they wear.”

Meijer says its customers are taking notice.

“I think that’s so amazing, the way Meijer is incorporating plus and the smaller sizes together,” said JoElla Saines, a Meijer customer from Normal, Ill. “Now everyone can shop together, not separate.”

As part of this merchandising change, Meijer is also rolling out equal pricing for all women’s apparel items, no longer charging more for plus sizes despite the higher production costs. The Midwest retailer is making this investment so all customers have access to fashion at the same price.

“Plus-size apparel is often priced higher than missy or women’s sizes,” said Annette Repasch, group vice president of softlines for Meijer. “We believe all our customers deserve to pay the same price for the same trends, regardless of size.”

By combining all sizes into one department, Meijer is also able to maximize its existing retail space. The new, integrated clothing department only accounts for 80 percent of the current space, which will allow the apparel buyers at Meijer to add even more trends and styles in the near future.

This ground-breaking shopping experience began in June 2016, and is currently available in 15 Meijer stores. Customers will see the retailer’s commitment to offering on-trend styles for most sizes when the retailer completes this roll-out to all 230 stores by early 2017.

Meijer: Michigan-based craft beer sales increased by 20 percent across its six-state footprint in 2016

Meijer: Michigan-based craft beer sales increased by 20 percent across its six-state footprint in 2016
Meijer: Michigan-based craft beer sales increased by 20 percent across its six-state footprint in 2016

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., 2016-Oct-29 — /EPR Retail News/ — Meijer began carrying its first craft brew more than 20 years ago. Today (October 26, 2016), Meijer remains committed to the growing industry and the up-and-coming local breweries across the Midwest.

The Grand Rapids, Mich.-based retailer’s commitment to local craft breweries represents an annual economic impact of more than $100 million across the Midwest. Meijer expects to stay on par with its projected double-digit volume growth in craft beer sales, as the retailer has experienced over the past three years. With respect to Michigan-based craft beer alone, Meijer reports it has seen a 20 percent increase across its six-state footprint so far this year, said Rich O’Keefe, Meijer senior buyer, during a recent exclusive roundtable gathering of some of the best craft beer breweries in southeast Michigan.

“We attribute this growth to establishing a great dialogue with craft beer breweries throughout Michigan and cultivating their popularity across our retail foot print,” said O’Keefe at Atwater Brewery in Detroit. “The consumer response has been tremendous. It proves that the thirst for Michigan craft beer is apparent throughout our retail markets. We are proud of the great products Michigan-based breweries produce and look forward to expanding the availability and building the popularity of other great regional breweries.”

Meijer gathered together several Detroit and Michigan-based brewery owners and founders at Atwater Brewery to discuss product trends and the state of the local craft beer industry. The event kicked off local in-store tasting events with area craft “brewlebrities” on site at select Meijer stores.

Participants included:

  • Joe Short: Founder/Owner of Short’s Brewing Company
  • Mark Reith: Owner of Atwater Brewery
  • Eric Briggeman: Vice President/General Manager of Rochester Mills Brewery
  • Kyle VanDeventer: Sales Manager of Griffin Claw
  • John Leone: Owner/President of ROAK Brewing Company
  • Tony Grant: Owner of Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales, North Peak Brewing Company and Northern United Brewing Company
  • Chase Kushak: Co-Founder/CEO of Founders Brewing Company
  • Matt Moberly: Director of Business Insights of Bells Brewery

“The concept of craft beer – especially in Detroit – has grown quickly from a garage hobby to a viable economic engine for Detroit and Michigan,” said Peter Whitsett, executive vice president of merchandising and marketing for Meijer. “We are proud to celebrate the craft masters who drove this industry to where it is today in Detroit. Their commitment to quality and craftsmanship is fueling demand for craft beer in and around Detroit.”

Meijer began carrying its first craft brew – Bell’s Oberon – 20 years ago at a single Kalamazoo store, and today sells more than 550 different craft beers from 220 local breweries across the retailer’s six-state footprint. Of those, 40 are produced by Detroit or southeast Michigan breweries. Meijer continues to partner with local craft brewers to expand their distribution. In fact, Michigan craft beer sales account for 31 percent of the retailer’s craft beer sales and 10 percent of the retailer’s total beer sales.

“Being in the same room with this group of craft brewlebrities – knowing their histories and the how far they’ve come is truly amazing,” said Shannon Long, producer and co-host of Pure Brews America, who moderated the roundtable discussion. “I think what makes them great is that they are focused on their core and not the next hot thing. They don’t need to follow a trend because they are the trend. ”

Paula Creamer and Morgan Pressel to play in the Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give, June 14-19 at Blythefield Country Club

Creamer and Pressel commit to join the field in Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., 2016-May-11 — /EPR Retail News/ — Officials announced today that two of the biggest names in ladies golf have committed to play in the Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give. Paula Creamer and Morgan Pressel – both of whom have multiple LPGA Tour victories under their belts – will compete alongside 142 of the other best lady golfers in the world June 14-19 at Blythefield Country Club.

“With Paula and Morgan – two LPGA tour favorites – committing to play, our third-year field is off to a fantastic start,” Tournament Director Lesley Baker said. “Both players have gone above and beyond to support the tournament and Simply Give, and we couldn’t be happier to host them here in Grand Rapids.”

In its third year, representatives with Meijer continue to invest in the Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give, ensuring West Michigan is a staple on the LPGA Tour. The retailer’s tournament has a purse of $2 million, and has expanded tournament-week activities and events for families.

Additionally, the retailer produced a television advertisement, featuring both Creamer and Pressel, to promote the tournament at Blythefield Country Club.

“We welcomed the opportunity to work with these talented athletes to promote the Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give,” said Peter Whitsett, executive vice president of merchandising and marketing for Meijer. “Their continued commitment to our tournament, and its cause to feed the hungry across the Midwest, will not only drive community engagement, but lead the way for a talent-packed field.”

Paula Creamer

Paula has a total of 11 career wins, including the 2010 Women’s U.S. Open. She has 99 career Top Ten finishes, and is a five-time member of the U.S. Solheim Cup Team. Paula enjoys visiting U.S. military bases around the world and spending time with the armed forces and their families.

Morgan Pressel

Morgan Pressel is a five-time U.S. Solheim Cup Team member, and had Top Five finishes in each of her first three majors in 2015. She placed 1st at the ANA Inspiration Major in 2007 and 2nd at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship in 2011. She established The Kathryn Krickstein Pressel MammoVan in South Florida to provide mammograms and breast health education, and each year hosts the Morgan & Friends Fight Cancer charity tournament.

The 2016 Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give will host a full field of 144 players, playing 72 holes of stroke play over four days of competition. The driving mission of the Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give is to focus on feeding the hungry, and improving the quality of life within the region. The tournament coincides with the retailer’s Simply Giveprogram, which has generated more than $21 million since 2008 for food pantries in the communities it serves.

Similar to last year, proceeds from the tournament – and each of the week’s festivities – will benefit the Meijer Simply Give program that restocks the shelves of food pantries throughout the Midwest. The Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give has donated more than $1.3 Million to local food pantries through the Simply Give program.

Authentic, handmade tortillas and tortilla chips in Meijer’s 222 stores across the Midwest

Retailer offers authentic, handmade tortillas and tortilla chips in all Meijer stores

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., 2015-10-26 — /EPR Retail News/ — A new partnership between Meijer and Detroit-based manufacturer Hacienda Mexican Foods has not only placed authentic, handmade products in each of the retailer’s 222 stores across the Midwest, but has also allowed the small family-owned manufacturer to expand its operation and create local jobs in southwest Detroit.

“Meijer is committed to supporting Michigan businesses because it’s what our customers want and deserve,” said Peter Whitsett, executive vice president of merchandising and marketing for Meijer. “But the impact of this partnership with Hacienda Mexican Foods means so much more.  It has created a ripple effect that has encouraged business growth and created jobs in the city of Detroit.”

The Grand Rapids, Mich.-based retailer began its partnership with Hacienda Mexican Foods in June 2014 when it began carrying corn and flour tortillas in 50 of its Michigan stores. The success of the product was quickly realized, which ultimately led to an expansion throughout the retailer’s Midwest footprint this fall and the inclusion of tortilla chips.

Hacienda Mexican Foods provides each Meijer store with three varieties of authentic, handmade tortilla chips – salted, unsalted and chili lime – and corn and flour tortillas. So far, the products have achieved a triple-digit percentage increase.

Owner Lydia Gutierrez said the increased business provided opportunity – to more than double the business she started in the early 1990s with her late husband, to support the local economy, and most importantly, to hire 40 individuals who live in the Mexicantown neighborhood where her business is located.

“The jobs we are giving to the community are for people who are hard workers, but maybe they do not have all the education,” Gutierrez said. “We’ve been able to change lives, change a community. We could not do what we’re doing today if it was not for Meijer’s willingness to work with us. It’s been such a blessing.”

Gutierrez said she’s also added a second shift at her manufacturing plant in Mexicantown to fulfill the retailer’s orders. The authentic tortillas and tortilla chips are handmade daily, and distributed to Meijer stores in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Wisconsin within days.

Meijer expects 20% increase in shoppers taking advantage of early Halloween savings and hunting

Meijer sees increased interest as weekend Halloween won’t happen again until 2020

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., 2015-10-9 — /EPR Retail News/ — Midwestern retailer Meijer is seeing as much as a 20 percent increase in shoppers taking advantage of Halloween savings and hunting earlier for decorations, candy and costumes this year, according to Peter Whitsett, executive vice president of merchandising and marketing.

“The next time Halloween will be celebrated on the weekend won’t be until 2020, so we’re seeing enthusiastic shoppers making it more of seasonal experience by planning their trick-or-treating, haunted house visits and unforgettable parties throughout October,” Whitsett said. “We know that more parents are decorating their homes and even dressing up with their kids, so we look forward to providing everything families need for their weekend festivities.”

Meijer aggressively expanded its selection in kids licensed costumes, adult costume accessories and animated home decorations this year to help shoppers maximize their Halloween experience. Whitsett said that nearly half will decorate their home, more than two-thirds of all celebrants will wear a costume and more than 157 million people are planning to celebrate and throw or attend parties.

The average person will spend $75 this Halloween on indoor and outdoor décor, costumes and candy, and nearly 70 million people plan on passing out candy. Total spending on Halloween will reach $6.9 billion, according to the National Retail Federation.

Top costume trends for this season include:

  • Adults: Customizable costumes with hoodies, masks, hats, wigs and other accessories.
  • Boys: Star Wars, Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles and superhero muscle costumes from the Avengers continue to be most popular. About 70 percent of all boys’ costumes purchased are licensed products.
  • Girls: Monster High continues to be popular, but My Little Pony, as well as Anna and Elsa from Frozen are still top costume choices.
  • Toddlers: Parents are most enthusiastic about dressing their toddlers up in Paw Patrol, Sesame Street andMinions character costumes.
  • Pets: With more and more consumers treating their pets as members of the family, Meijer expects to sell more than 80,000 pet outfits and accessories this year by featuring an expanded selection of Star Wars licensed costumes and a wider assortment of dog apparel.
  • Quick-and easy-costumes: Step-in or “bagged” costumes will provide customers with “no muss-no fuss” solutions this Halloween. Novelty costumes like Sharks, Bacon, Penguins, and Bananas are ever-popular for adults.
  • Do-It-Yourself costumes: DIY has grown in popularity beyond the Meijer craft aisles. More and more adults are piecing together costumes for kids and family, which is why Meijer continues to offer a wide assortment of wigs and individual costume accessories. Meijer sells more black nail polish and novelty make-up during Halloween than any other time throughout the year.

Additionally, Meijer is hosting a Halloween Pets Costume Sweepstakes on its Facebook page. Beginning Oct. 18,upload a photo of your pet in a Halloween costume for a chance to win one of three sweepstakes packages that feature a year’s worth of pet treats, Avanti greeting cards and free photo prints from Meijer Photo.

Meijer Drops Prices on More than 300 Items to Help Back-To-School Shoppers Prepare Early

Meijer Drops Prices on More than 300 Items to Help Customers Prepare Early

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., 2015-7-23 — /EPR Retail News/ — With the summer in full swing, families are shifting their focus from fireworks and bonfires to shopping for the upcoming school year, according to a recent Meijer customer survey. While most shoppers plan to spend more than they did last year on school supplies, 75 percent are expecting even more shopping trips to buy as much as they can on their back-to-school list before the first day of school.

“Families are starting their back-to-school shopping earlier than ever and seem incredibly focused on taking advantage of deals,” said Peter Whitsett, executive vice president of merchandising and marketing for the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based retailer. “We’ve not only expanded our selection, carrying more than 1,250 items, but we have dropped prices on key school supplies while adding more on-trend items like backpacks, locker decorations, notebooks and apparel.”

The Meijer customer survey found approximately 92 percent of households with school-age children plan to spend the same amount or more than last year for back-to–school supplies. Additionally, Meijer learned that families will be sharing the cost of pencils and paper more than ever with 40 percent of students helping with school expenses (up from 33 percent in 2014).

The survey results also revealed that sales, promotions and overall low prices are important when customers plan their shopping trips. Meijer is responding with price drops on more than 300 items now through September, as well as offering nearly 150 items for less than $1. As online, digital and mobile savings have become increasingly important to shoppers, Meijer will offer Back-to-School Bucks available Aug. 14-15 through its mPerks digital savings program, as well as through print coupons.

Once customers sign up at mperks.meijer.com, they can preview and select coupons for their favorite national or Meijer brand products that are then stored in their personal mPerks account until redeemed or they expire. The applicable coupons are then instantly redeemed when shoppers enter in their phone number, which serves as the mPerks account number, at checkout.

Back-To-School Basics Top This Year’s Lists
Past popular school purchases, such e-readers, calculators and tablets, are making less frequent appearances on shopping lists and being replaced with classroom basics like pens, pencils, notebooks, paper, crayons and binders. However, they’re being purchased in larger quantities to last the entire school year. The basics don’t have to feel basic – students are taking it upon themselves to customize everything from notebooks to backpacks to lockers.

Back-to-School Trends
According to merchandise buyers and category experts at Meijer, the retailer has increased its offering to help customers stay on top of the trends. These include:

  • Beyond the basics: For schools that don’t allow students to take backpacks from class to class, zipper binders are more fashionable and practical than ever. For students needing a much more durable, tear- and spill-proof spiral option, poly notebooks are growing in popularity.
  • Customization is everything: Students want to stand out and individualize their school supplies, whether it is a backpack, a notebook or their locker. They’ll be applying decals, gold foil and using sharpies to customize these basics.
  • Practical can be cool: A top trend for 2015 is backpacks with padded backs and a sternum strap. Both make for a more comfortable and safer trip. The padded back allows air to flow, keeping students cool as they carry their books and the sternum strap distributes the weight of the backpack more evenly.
  • Licensed products: Once again, students are looking for their favorite characters on their school supplies. Despicable Me (Minions!), Frozen, Rachel Hale, Paw Patrol and John Deere top the list. Star Wars is also expected to be a hot seller with the release of the movie later this year.

“Our customers are counting on us to provide all their back to school needs at the lowest prices,” Whitsett said. “We’ve worked very hard to be their one-stop shopping destination and we know they will be very pleased with our broad offering and great value.”
