Meijer unveils newly-remodeled Rockford Supercenter; the 22nd Midwest location to be remodeled this year

Rebuilt Michigan store is 22nd Midwest location to be remodeled this year

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., 2017-Dec-12 — /EPR Retail News/ — Meijer celebrated the completion of this year’s 22nd newly-remodeled supercenter today (December 8, 2017) in Rockford, Mich., President and CEO Rick Keyes announced. The updated store has been designed to adapt to the needs of today’s customers, with an enhanced prepared foods area for grab-and-go convenience that offers Pan Asian cuisine, a pizzeria, fresh sushi and a sandwich shop.

In 2017, the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based retailer aggressively remodeled stores in key Midwestern markets, such as Cincinnati, Louisville, Indianapolis, and suburban Chicago. Six Meijer supercenters in Michigan alone were updated, including Mt. Pleasant, Grand Rapids and in the Detroit area. This year’s remodel investment means that Meijer has now remodeled more than one quarter of its 235 stores in the last two years.

“We continue to focus on updating our stores to bring the best retail experience to our customers,” said Keyes. “This was a major remodel, and we are very pleased to make this investment and renew our commitment to Rockford and the Algoma Township community.”

Updates to the Rockford supercenter began in June and were completed in six months, following Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards. Improvements include an enhanced store layout with an updated pharmacy area, expanded grocery and health and beauty sections, updated apparel department and an all new pet department providing a specialty pet store feel.

Key updates also include lighting, heating, refrigeration and parking lot improvements. The remodeled 192,000-square-foot Rockford store also provides the Midwestern retailer another flagship location, where the company can test new innovations and programs for consideration at other stores.

The company celebrated the new store’s completion with a ribbon-cutting event, followed by remarks from Meijer officials and State Sen. Peter MacGregor, and featured performances from the Rockford High School Pep Band.

As part of the celebration, Meijer will host a Family-Fun Day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9 at the Rockford store. Customers can also enter to win a $500 shopping spree Dec. 8 and 9.

“Our customers in the Rockford community have been very patient during the last six months, so we’re very pleased that they can finally enjoy the benefits of this great new store,” Keyes said.

Meijer expands home delivery service to include season’s hottest gifts and toys and thousands of other items

Meijer expands home delivery service to include season’s hottest gifts and toys and thousands of other items

Retailer’s home delivery service expands to include toys, wrapping paper, Christmas decorations and thousands of other items

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., 2017-Nov-07 — /EPR Retail News/ — Meijer is gearing up for the holidays by adding thousands of general merchandise items to its popular store-to-door home delivery service, challenging online retailers as competition for customer wallets continues to increase for Thanksgiving, Christmas and seasonal celebrations.

The general merchandise items now available through Meijer Home Delivery includes the season’s hottest gifts and toys, as well as wrapping paper, artificial trees and Christmas decorations. Other items added to a total of more than 70,000 fresh produce, grocery and general merchandise items hand-picked by Shipt shoppers from local Meijer stores include electronics like TVs, tablets, headphones, drones and gaming systems.

“We’ve had tremendous success delivering groceries to our customers across the Midwest, so we are very pleased to offer them the convenience of having their holiday gifts delivered to their doorstep as well,” Meijer President & CEO Rick Keyes said. “Whether you are looking for a turkey, toys and gifts or even decorations, our brick–and-mortar stores combined with a personal shopping solution provides something for everyone’s holiday shopping needs.”

Since launching in Detroit last September, Meijer and official home delivery partner Shipt have expanded the personalized service to more than 200 stores in just 148 days. The Meijer Home Delivery service is now on-pace to make more than a million deliveries from its stores by year end, and is now available to more than 10 million households in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin and Kentucky.

Keyes said one reason the program has been so successful is the company’s ability to offer product selection from its supercenters. A typical Meijer store features everything from fresh produce and grocery to general merchandise items, including light bulbs, diapers and baby items, as well as bulk items, like bags of rock salt and pet foods.

The National Retail Federation expects retail sales in November and December – excluding automobiles, gasoline and restaurants – to increase as much as 4 percent this year, for a total of $678.75 billion to $682 billion, up from $655.8 billion last year.

Because most Meijer stores are open 24-hours-a-day, customers can choose delivery times most convenient for them, which gives people the flexibility to shop and receive orders very early in the morning or late at night.

Meijer has also provided home delivery service members the ability to earn mPerks Rewards that can be redeemed in store, as well as offering sales on hundreds of items each week found through the Shipt app.

Meijer customers can sign up for the service for $99 per year. Unlimited deliveries are free for orders over $35; a flat $7 delivery fee is added to any orders under $35.

Meijer surpassed 500,000 deliveries from its store-to-door service and is on-pace to see more than a million by year-end

Meijer surpassed 500,000 deliveries from its store-to-door service and is on-pace to see more than a million by year-end

Retailer’s store-to-door success includes 1 million eggs, 1.5 million pounds of bananas, and availability to more than 10 million households across the Midwest

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., 2017-Oct-26 — /EPR Retail News/ — Meijer is proving just how popular store-to-door convenience for grocery delivery has become in the Midwest. The Grand Rapids, Mich.-based retailer recently surpassed 500,000 deliveries, and is on-pace to see more than a million deliveries made from its stores by year-end.

Since launching in Detroit last September, Meijer has expanded the personalized service to more than 200 stores in just 148 days. The store-to-door service is now available to more than 10 million households in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Kentucky where Shipt shoppers hand-pick items from local Meijer stores offering home delivery. So far, more than 85,000 cases of water, 1 million eggs and 1.5 million pounds of bananas have been brought right to your door.

“As e-commerce continues to change the way people shop, we are proud to bring home delivery to the Midwest and innovate the way people shop our stores,” Meijer President & CEO Rick Keyes said. “Our goal was to quickly bring a high level of convenience to as many customers as possible, so surpassing a half million deliveries is a great start as we continue enhancing this personalized customer-first experience.”

Keyes said that one reason why the service has been so popular is the retailer’s ability to combine a seamless digital shopping solution with the best of what its brick and mortar retail model stores offer. Meijer supercenters across six states average more than 192,000 square-feet, featuring everything from fresh produce and grocery to general merchandise that includes daily essential items like light bulbs, diapers, school supplies, as well as bulk items, like bags of rock salt and pet foods, normally found at specialty stores.

Because most Meijer stores are open 24-hours-a-day, customers can choose delivery times most convenient for them, which allows those with third shift jobs or challenging lifestyles the flexibility to shop and receive orders very early in the morning or late at night.

Meijer has also provided home delivery service members the ability to earn mPerks Rewards that can be redeemed in store, as well as offering sales on hundreds of items each week found through the Shipt app.

“Having the unrivaled selection of fresh produce, grocery and general merchandise available under one roof, not to mention the ability to earn rewards for your orders, has proven to be a differentiator for Meijer customers,” said Bill Smith, Founder and CEO for Shipt, which fulfills the deliveries for Meijer customers.

Meijer customers can sign up for the service for $99 per year. Unlimited deliveries are free for orders over $35; a flat $7 delivery fee is added to any orders under $35.

A half million deliveries and 1.5 million pounds of bananas later, Meijer’s combination of the traditional brick-and-mortar accessibility with a personalized digital shopping solution continues to attract everyone, including millennials, parents and those who may have difficulty shopping.

“Thirty minutes in a grocery store for me is like running a marathon for three or four hours,” said Idelma Urolia, who suffered a stroke in 2014 and signed up for Meijer home delivery as soon as it was offered in Detroit. “To have a service that is going to do all the manual labor of driving to Meijer, pick up my groceries, deliver right to my door, and even help put them away is more than life-changing, it’s a life-saver.”

Community Grocery Store Anchors Development on the West Side

Grand Rapids, Mich., 2017-Jun-27 — /EPR Retail News/ — West Side and downtown Grand Rapids residents today (June 26, 2017) celebrated the groundbreaking of Bridge Street Market, a unique grocery store coming to the city’s West Side on the bustling corner o-f Bridge St. and Seward Ave.

The new 37,000-square-foot store will feature 22-foot ceilings, open air elements and a pedestrian-friendly design. The community grocery store will anchor a development spanning a city block located amidst the city’s current hub of collaboration and mixed-use development, and will reside alongside apartments, a parking deck, and an office and retail building. The mixed-use project commenced with the deconstruction of the original buildings in May, clearing the way for future development.

“We are eager to share Bridge Street Market with the Grand Rapids community and are excited about what our team will be able to accomplish through this location,” Meijer President & CEO Rick Keyes said. “We believe in the West Side’s heritage and authenticity, and are excited to have a core presence in the heart of such an inspiring part of our city. We think there’s no better place to launch this new neighborhood market than in our hometown and on the West Side.”

Bridge Street Market will feature fresh produce, full grocery offerings, a deli, fresh-cut meat, a bakery, basic cleaning items and paper products.

The grocery store is expected to open its doors and produce stalls in the early fall of 2018.

2017 Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give announces record donation of more than $1 million to support food pantries across Midwest

2017 Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give announces record donation of more than $1 million to support food pantries across Midwest

Representatives announce dates for fifth year tournament

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., 2017-Jun-19 — /EPR Retail News/ — The fourth annual Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give concluded today (June 18, 2017) with a win by Canadian LPGA Professional Brooke M. Henderson and a record donation of more than $1 million to the retailer’s Simply Give program that stocks the shelves of its food pantry partners across the Midwest.

“The Meijer LPGA Classic has an incredible impact on our hungry neighbors, and it’s thanks to the ongoing community support that we met our goal of raising at least $1 million during this year’s tournament,” Meijer President & CEO Rick Keyes said. “We look forward to continuing this tradition again next year.”

The 2018 Meijer LPGA Classic will be held June 11-17 at Blythefield Country Club.

“On behalf of everyone at Meijer, we congratulate Brooke Henderson on a great win at the Meijer LPGA Classic,” said Cathy Cooper, Executive Director of the Meijer LPGA Classic. “Despite a few weather delays, it was a fantastic end to a wonderful week. This year’s tournament was once again fully embraced by the community.”

While final attendance figures are not yet available, representatives said the tournament continued to exceed expectations and will definitely meet the goal of raising at least $1 million for Simply Give.

In total, the four tournaments have generated more than $3.1 million – or 34.1 million meals – for the Meijer Simply Give program.

Meijer started Simply Give in November 2008 and has since generated more than $29 million for its food pantry partners. The contributions donated as a result of the Meijer LPGA Classic are due, in large part, to the generous Meijer customers who attended the tournament week events, and the sponsors who helped make the event a success.

The $1 million donation will be divided among the retailer’s 237 food pantry partners participating in the spring Simply Give campaign, which ended today.

“The Meijer Simply Give program is extremely important to our food pantry because it helps us to provide healthy and nutritious food to our neighbors,” said Waverly Knight, a director of the Northwest Food Pantry. “Without the program, our food pantry shelves would be empty. We thank Meijer for their willingness to have the Simply Give program and the community for their support in helping feed those in need.”

A crowd of enthusiastic fans braved the weather and lined the ropes at Blythefield Country Club June 13-18 to watch a competitive field of 144 world-class golfers play 72 holes of stroke play. Ultimately, Henderson shot 3-under par in the final round to claim the title as Meijer LPGA Classic champion. She won the tournament by two strokes – over Lexi Thompson and Michelle Wie – with a four-round 17-under par total.

Henderson dedicated this tournament to her father, who also happens to be her coach.

“I’ve said this win is for him, but it really is for him because I really wouldn’t have done it without him,” she said. “To have my fourth win is just super exciting, and I’m excited for the summer now. Thank you to Meijer for putting on such a great event, and I’m excited to come back next year to defend my title.”

“Providing people with the option to shop online for thousands of grocery products and have them delivered to their door when it’s most convenient for them is another Meijer innovation that helps our customers save time,” Meijer President & CEO Rick Keyes said. “The personalized service that Shipt offers, coupled with the quality and value our customers love about Meijer, creates a new type of shopping experience in Ohio.”

Meijer piloted the program in Detroit, then expanded the service to Grand Rapids, and will launch in Indianapolis and Fort Wayne this week. Since the launch in southeast Michigan last fall, the program has made nearly 90,000 deliveries in Michigan. Meijer plans to make home delivery available to as many customers as possible across its six-state footprint which includes Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and Wisconsin.

“Meijer is a mainstay in Midwest retail and our growing partnership speaks to their commitment to continuously find new and innovative ways to delight their customers,” said Shipt founder and CEO Bill Smith. “With these new expansions, Shipt will now be able to offer the convenience of home delivery from Meijer stores to over 20 million households, creating a simpler, more enjoyable grocery shopping experience across the Midwest.”

Leading up to the launch, Shipt plans to grow their network of Shoppers, who are responsible for ensuring complete, accurate fulfillments of each order. To apply to be a Shipt Shopper, visit Shipt.com and click “Get Paid to Shop.” Shipt plans to hire 10,000 people across the six-state expansion with Meijer. The company plans to hire approximately 1,000 shoppers in Ohio. Shipt displays a commitment to each of the communities it serves and plans to identify opportunities to help eliminate hunger and food insecurity in these communities.

Shipt memberships are available for an annual fee of $99 and members have access to free delivery on all orders over $35. For orders under $35, there is a $7 delivery fee. To sign up for Shipt and learn more about the service and availability, visit Shipt.com/Meijer. Ohio customers can sign up for Shipt now so they’ll be ready to order items for home delivery the moment the service becomes available.

Meijer expands its relationship with Shipt to bring home delivery service across its six-state footprint

Meijer expands its relationship with Shipt to bring home delivery service across its six-state footprint

Meijer signs deal with Shipt to expand home delivery; Customers to get groceries and essentials from local Meijer delivered in as little as one hour

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., 2017-Mar-10 — /EPR Retail News/ — Meijer announced today it is bringing home delivery across its six-state footprint, starting with Grand Rapids, Fort Wayne and Indianapolis, and will quickly follow with other major markets in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, and Wisconsin.

“We are excited to expand our relationship with Shipt because together we can offer customers across the Midwest a whole new level of convenience, product variety, and service not available before,” Meijer President & CEO Rick Keyes said. “Now customers can shop a complete grocery list online, having access to our world class assortment of fresh produce, meat, dairy and a number of other essentials that Shipt will hand select from a local Meijer store and deliver to a customer’s doorstep.”

Beginning on March 29, Meijer customers in Grand Rapids with a Shipt membership will have the ability to shop 55,000 items across our stores using the Shipt smartphone app (iOS, android) or place orders directly through shipt.com. Customers can schedule their orders to be delivered in as little as one hour, seven days a week. Meijer and Shipt will also launch the service in Fort Wayne and the Indianapolis area in April. Other major markets in the Midwest will be announced in the coming months.

“The way our customers shop continues to evolve,” said Meijer Chairman Hank Meijer. “We believe the high-touch service that Shipt offers, coupled with what our customers love about shopping at Meijer, creates a new type of shopping experience.”

Bill Smith, Founder & CEO of Shipt, said the expansion of service at Meijer stores will also help create an estimated 10,000 jobs in six states in 2017. Shipt will build networks of hundreds of personal shoppers and identify opportunities to support community organizations in each Meijer market offering the service. “We are excited to partner with a leader in the retail industry who continues to put the customer first,” Smith said.

The retailer’s decision to expand the availability of digital home delivery comes after its highly successful launch of the service in the Detroit area last fall, which prompted Meijer to roll out the service to other markets. Shipt members in the Detroit area placed more than 65,000 orders since September 2016.

The Shipt delivery service is membership-based, with either annual or monthly options. For $99 a year, Shipt members receive unlimited free grocery deliveries on all orders over $35.

After signing up for Shipt, members can digitally shop a large selection of Meijer groceries, fresh produce, and everyday essentials including baby, health and beauty products. They can also note any preferences, choose a preferred delivery window and pay for their order. A Shipt shopper will hand pick their items and deliver them in as little as one hour after the order is placed.

Because most Meijer stores are open 24 hours a day, Shipt deliveries will be available at most Meijer locations around the clock, seven days a week, with the exception of certain holidays.

Meijer announces $375 million investment for seven new Meijer supercenters and 22 different remodel projects in 2017

Meijer announces $375 million investment for seven new Meijer supercenters and 22 different remodel projects in 2017

Investment includes retailer’s first stores in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and the Green Bay, Wis. market

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., 2017-Mar-06 — /EPR Retail News/ — Meijer is investing more than $375 million in new and remodeled stores this year across its six-state footprint, President & Chief Executive Officer Rick Keyes announced today (March 2, 2017).

The investment includes the construction of seven new Meijer supercenters and 22 different remodel projects. While Michigan, Indiana, and Wisconsin will each welcome new Meijer supercenters later this year, dozens of other Meijer stores have begun or will soon begin remodel projects to further enhance the customer shopping experience.

“These projects represent an investment in our customers, team members and the local communities that have supported us for so long,” Keyes said. “We’re also excited that at long last we’ll cross the bridge and open our first stores in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.”

Meijer’s continued focus on remodeling stores reflects the company’s commitment to providing its customers with the best shopping experience. This year’s remodel investment means that by the end of 2017, Meijer will have remodeled and upgraded nearly 90 stores since 2010.

The company’s new store commitment follows its focus on steady growth throughout its six-state footprint. The opening of each new Meijer store represents as many as 300 full- and part-time jobs. When including this year’s stores, Meijer will have opened more than 50 new stores since 2010.

New and remodeled stores have resulted in the creation of thousands of jobs and millions of dollars of tax revenue pumped into local communities. Meijer frequently works with local contractors when building and remodeling stores.

The new Meijer supercenters opening in 2017 include:

  • Escanaba, Mich.
  • Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.
  • McCordsville, Ind.
  • Franklin, Ind.
  • Greenfield, Wis.
  • Howard, Wis. (Green Bay)
  • West Bend, Wis.

In addition to the new supercenters, Meijer is aggressively remodeling stores in five different states, including key markets such as Detroit, Cincinnati, Louisville and suburban Chicago. Six Meijer supercenters in Michigan alone will be updated, with the stores in Mt. Pleasant, Commerce Township and Algoma Township slated for major remodels.

While the depth of the remodel varies based on several factors, these projects include a variety of specific store enhancements, including improved store layouts, expanded grocery and health and beauty sections, as well as lighting, heating, refrigeration and parking lot improvements. Additionally, the introduction of newer technology in key areas during the remodel process will result in more energy-efficient stores.

Meijer’s free prescription program filled nearly 40 million prescriptions and surpassed $500 million savings for customers

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., 2017-Jan-09 — /EPR Retail News/ — Meijer pharmacies marked a major milestone earlier this month when its free prescription program surpassed $500 million in savings for customers. The program – a first of its kind when launched in October 2006 – has since filled nearly 40 million free prescriptions.

“Meijer is a family-owned company committed to meeting the needs of families in the communities we serve,” said Jason Beauch, Vice President of Pharmacy Merchandising. “We do this by providing positive solutions to everyday problems, which includes access to necessary medications. We are pleased this program is used by so many families across the Midwest.”

The retailer’s free prescription program helps ensure the health of families and individuals by enabling Meijer customers, regardless of insurance or co-pay, to have their prescriptions filled. The program began by covering leading oral generic antibiotics, with a special focus on the prescriptions most often filled for children. The program expanded over the years by offering free prenatal vitamins in May 2008, metformin, the most commonly prescribed drug for type 2 diabetes, in 2010, and the generic substitute for Lipitor®* (atorvastatin calcium), the cholesterol lowering medication, in 2012.

The most popular free prescription filled at Meijer has been the generic cholesterol lowering medication. In 2016, Meijer pharmacy customers filled more than 3.2 million atorvastatin calcium prescriptions, followed by more than 1.4 million metformin prescriptions, more than 1.3 million antibiotics, and more than 480,000 free prenatal vitamin prescriptions.

In addition to the free prescription program, the Meijer mPerks pharmacy rewards program rewarded pharmacy customers with more than $13 million in rewards to spend at Meijer last year.

“We’re proud that we’ve helped millions of families improve their health and wellbeing without impacting their budgets,” Meijer President and CEO Rick Keyes said. “Providing these solutions for the customers who rely on our pharmacies is part of our commitment to the communities we serve.”

Meijer surprised 230 customers by “gifting” them their entire shopping cart during its third annual Very Merry Meijer event

Meijer surprised 230 customers by “gifting” them their entire shopping cart during its third annual Very Merry Meijer event

Third year retailer collects customer reactions in Very Merry Meijer video of the fun-filled events

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., 2016-Dec-15 — /EPR Retail News/ — Meijer made Christmas very merry this year when it once again surprised an unsuspecting customer in each of its 230 stores by “gifting” them their entire shopping cart filled with gifts and groceries upon checkout.

During the third annual Very Merry Meijer event, the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based retailer randomly selected 230 customers on Dec. 10 to receive their purchases free, and gave a $100 Meijer gift card to the Meijer cashier helping the customer.

In addition, each surprised customer received an additional $100 Meijer gift card to help pass along the generosity.

“Christmas is a time for kindness and joy, and we were so excited to bring back the Very Merry Meijer event once again to share the spirit of the season with those we hold dear: our customers and team members,” Executive Chairman Hank Meijer said. “We are very appreciative of our customers and team members, and wanted to find a special way to wish them a very Merry Christmas.”

The Very Merry Meijer event resulted in tens of thousands of dollars in gifts to Meijer customers – with shopping carts ranging from $400 to upwards of more than $1,000 in value – along with a mixture of emotions that spurred tears, hugs and even speechlessness from very happy customers. For some, the surprise renewed hope in the true meaning of the season; others appreciated the generosity during a time that can be quite stressful.

Meijer released a video today that showcases how the retailer surprised its customers. In most cases, the store director revealed the gift upon checkout, but Hank Meijer, Board Director Doug Meijer, and Meijer President and CEO Rick Keyes also helped spread holiday cheer.

“We strive all year long to put our customers first, and provide them with a great shopping experience through the quality products we sell, the service we provide and the many ways we offer savings,” Keyes said. “The Very Merry Meijer event was an extra special way to show our appreciation and make the season bright. That is what the holidays are all about.”

The impact of this year’s Very Merry Meijer event was far reaching as those customers received a second gift from the retailer – a $100 Meijer gift card – to pay it forward to a charitable organization, or a family or individual in need. Meijer is encouraging those customers to share their pay-it-forward photos and videos on its Facebook page with the hashtag #VeryMerryMeijer for a chance for their charity to receive a $5,000 donation.

“The Very Merry Meijer event began as a simple way to say thank you, but it has grown into so much more because of our thoughtful customers,” Doug Meijer said. “This is truly an event I look forward to all year long because it gives us a chance to show our customers and team members just how much they mean to us.”

Meijer opens new 192,000-square-foot supercenter in Sussex, Wisconsin

Retailer brings low prices, fresh produce delivered daily and drive-thru pharmacy to the Sussex community

SUSSEX, Wis., 2016-Jun-08 — /EPR Retail News/ — Meijer opened a new 192,000-square-foot supercenter today in Sussex, Wis. bringing local shoppers better access to low prices on high-quality merchandise, fresh produce delivered daily, and a full-service pharmacy that makes family health care a priority.

“It has been a great privilege to demonstrate the Meijer difference to customers in Wisconsin during this past year,” Meijer President Rick Keyes said. “So, we are truly pleased to open this new store, which will provide Sussex and its surrounding communities with our combination of selection and quality at low prices.”

The Sussex store is one of nine new Meijer supercenters to open – and part of an investment of more than $400 million in new and remodeled stores – this year, which will create 3,000 new jobs across the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based retailer’s six-state foot print. The Sussex store, located off Highway K and 164, is the fifth Wisconsin Meijer store.

In 2015, Meijer opened its first four supercenters in Wisconsin in Grafton, Kenosha, Wauwatosa, and Oak Creek. In addition to the Sussex location, Meijer will also be opening a supercenter in Waukesha later this summer. Meijer has made a major commitment to growth in the state of Wisconsin and plans to open two to three additional stores per year through 2020, including potential locations in the Green Bay, Fox Valley, Greenfield, Manitowoc, and Sheboygan area in the next several years.

The new Meijer store was built to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards and will be open 24 hours a day. The grocery options that Meijer offers include more than 600 varieties of farm-fresh produce and a full-service meat department that features fresh seafood, Certified Angus Beef and custom cuts of meat. The bakery specializes in custom-decorated cakes and fresh bread baked four times daily.

The opening celebration began with a ribbon-cutting event, followed by remarks from Meijer leadership and local officials. Store Director Steve Talbert demonstrated the store’s commitment to the community by presenting $25,000 to Sussex Parks and Recreation to help fund a new fully-accessible Hallmark Playground at Weyer Park designed to be enjoyed by children of all abilities.

As part of its ongoing community support, Meijer donates more than 6 percent of its net profit to charitable organizations annually, and each of its stores works with local food pantries and banks to help fight hunger at the local level. Since 2008, the retailer’s Simply Give program has generated more than $21 million for its food pantry partners throughout the Midwest. This year’s Spring Simply Give campaign will run through June 19 and all proceeds will be donated to Sussex Outreach Services.

In addition to the retailer’s traditional grocery and merchandise, garden center and 24-hour gas station, the new Sussex pharmacy will offer drive-thru pick up and the company’s free prescription program. The prescription program includes leading oral generic antibiotics with a special focus on prescriptions most often filled for children, prenatal vitamins and medications for those with diabetes and high cholesterol. Since its inception in 2006, the Meijer free prescription program has filled nearly 33 million free prescriptions, saving Meijer customers nearly $454 million.

“We are excited to continue our growth in Wisconsin,” Store Director Steve Talbert said. “We’ve worked hard to prepare for this grand opening, and we are ready to provide all of our new customers in and around Sussex a fantastic shopping experience.”

Meijer announces the appointment of Rick Keyes as its new president

26-Year Meijer Veteran Takes Reigns of Grand Rapids-Based Retailer

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., 2015-10-5 — /EPR Retail News/ — Meijer announced today the appointment of Rick Keyes as president of the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based retailer. Keyes, who joined the company 26 years ago as a pharmacist in Columbus, Ohio, takes the reigns of the multi-state Midwestern retailer after this week’s announcement that J.K. Symancyk is leaving the company to join a Texas-based retailer.

“We are pleased to introduce Rick as our new president,” said Hank Meijer, co-chairman and co-chief executive officer. “Rick’s proven leadership has been an inspiration to our team. He has grown up with Meijer, excelling in positions in both pharmacy and store operations, and, most recently, building industry-leading supply chain and manufacturing operations.”

Keyes, 46, had been executive vice president of supply chain and manufacturing since 2006. In that capacity he oversaw the retailer’s expansion into manufacturing with the acquisition of one dairy and construction of another, and pioneered initiatives ranging from the launch of a near-zero emission truck fleet to significant investments in lean distribution technologies.

“I am truly humbled and honored to accept the role as president of Meijer,” Keyes said. “I joined this company as a front-line team member more than 25 years ago, and Meijer has provided me the opportunity to learn, grow and develop experiences across a variety of disciplines. I’m very much looking forward to working with our team members at all levels to ensure Meijer continues to grow and thrive.”

While Keyes’ imprint on the increased sophistication of Meijer supply chain and manufacturing operations is dramatic, he is also known as a strong advocate for team members, including a passion for increasing employment opportunities for persons with disabilities. Since 2012, Keyes has led an initiative at several Meijer distribution facilities to create job opportunities for persons with various levels of disability, partnering with several local non-profit agencies.

“A company can only be great if its team members feel valued and engaged, regardless of their role or level,” Keyes said. “Together with a strong senior leadership team, I’m looking forward to charting a course for our company where everyone can feel ownership for our success, while delivering the excellent customer service Meijer is known for.”

Keyes will be the 7th president in the company’s 81-year history. He is a native of Columbus, Ohio and a graduate of Ohio Northern University’s College of Pharmacy.
