Foodstuffs announces opening of its new store in Raglan, New Zealand

Auckland, New Zealand, 2014-7-4 — /EPR Retail News/ — Foodstuffs is thrilled to confirm that its new Raglan Four Square is open. While the previous Four Square closed its doors in August 2012 Foodstuffs has remained 100% committed to the Raglan community and is delighted to be bringing the Four Square brand back.

New owners Ken and Lesley Curtis have been busy managing the construction of the new 350m2 store which is just going through its final approval with council. The new store promises to bring a fresh shopping experience to the Raglan community. Four Square is renowned for providing convenient shopping and the Curtis’ promise to deliver on this and more.

“Customers can expect to find all the great Kiwi brands they need, along with fresh produce and meat. And all at great prices,” promises Ken. He has had a lot of customers enquire as to whether Pams and Budget will be stocked at the store and Ken can confirm that they will a key part of the offering.

Ken started off his grocery career at the tender age of 13, at Cambridge New World as a spud boy packing potatoes before moving on to Hillcrest New World and PAK’nSAVE Mill Street as a grocery buyer. Following this, and encouraged by PAK’nSAVE Mill Street’s owner, Glen Miller, he purchased his first store, Four Square Waihi Beach. A move to Pirongia followed before he found himself with the opportunity to build Four Square Raglan.

“Both Lesley and I are thrilled to be able deliver the iconic Four Square offering to Raglan and we look forward to getting to know our customers,” says Ken. “On a personal front my son, Sean, will also be joining me in running the store which I am really looking forward to. He has just finished his training at PAK’nSAVE Te Awamutu and becoming a part of the family business is something he is very excited about.”

In time the store also hopes to be able to support to the wider community. “It’s important to give back and we hope to support local initiatives where we can,” says Ken.

Four Square Raglan will employ eight part time staff and is located at 3 Bankart Street, Raglan and has 14 customer car parks for added convenience.

New Zealand: Foodstuffs North Island sold their Adelaide Road site in Newtown to Ryman Healthcare

Foodstuffs North Island has announced they have sold their Adelaide Road site in Newtown to Ryman Healthcare.

Auckland, New Zealand, 2014-7-4 — /EPR Retail News/ — Foodstuffs bought the site in November 2009 from Tip Top as a potential development site but following a strategic review of the portfolio, Foodstuffs determined the property was surplus to its future requirements, says Angela Bull General Manager of Property Development Foodstuffs North Island.

“After investigating a range of options for the site, we are pleased to have been able to work with Ryman Healthcare to achieve a great result for both the property and the Wellington community,” says Bull.

Ryman Healthcare will develop the 600m sq site into a boutique retirement village for the wider South Wellington community.

Ryman Healthcare managing director Simon Challies said the new village would include independent and serviced apartments, as well as hospital and dementia care.

“Newtown is a vibrant part of Wellington with a strong sense of community and we’re delighted to be building there.’’

Ryman are currently working on design concepts but it is too early to say what the final scheme will look like or when a construction start date is likely.

New Zealand: Four Square marks its 90th anniversary

Waiheke, New Zealand, 2014-7-4 — /EPR Retail News/ — Four Square is a New Zealand business story that started in the 1920s and grew to become a part of our national heritage. It all started in the early part of the century after the First World War with a company that was developed out of desperation and born in adversity, one which would develop a tradition of service to be proud of.

Steve Anderson, Managing Director, Foodstuffs New Zealand recalls that Heaton Barker, one of Foodstuffs founding members and Chief Executive recorded how both the ‘4 Square’ name and trademark came about, on 4 July 1924.

“Barker recalled that he was on the phone to one of the directors trying to determine a name for the group of stores when suddenly he looked down and ‘there staring me in the face, were the lines I had drawn around the figure. Four Square, of course’,” says Anderson. “The fact that the name and symbol came about on American Independence Day had added significance for the group who were after a brand which epitomised the private independent grocer. “

In Wellington, despite the adverse post-war trading conditions, a Railways employee, Ben Sutherland, with no experience in the grocery trade, decided to establish a chain of grocery stores throughout New Zealand. He took over empty shops wherever he could, and unlike the competition of the day, spent little or nothing on decoration and appearance, offering no wrapping, credit or delivery, and cut prices on multiple product lines. The end result being a chain of stores called ‘Self Help’.

“In a few short years the number of Self Help stores around the country had proliferated to around 130 stores, causing the independent grocers to stand up and take stock,” says Anderson.

The independent grocers solution was to enter into better buying arrangements and some of the more progressive grocers decided to pool their resources to achieve this aim. It also became clear to the group that to achieve real success it needed to establish a company which could be recognised by the manufacturers as a wholesaler, which is how United Buyers Limited came to be registered in December 1929. In May 1935 United Buyers Limited would in turn become Foodstuffs (Wellington) Limited and Amalgamated Buyers Limited would adopt the title Foodstuffs (Christchurch) Limited giving the group an established a nationwide presence.

Today there are 274 Four Square stores to be found nationwide with many owners who are third or fourth generation grocers including Conor Kershaw from Four Square Martinborough. Four Square Martinborough was established in 1873, and 141 years later it is still being run by its 4th generation of owners – Conor and Philippa Kershaw.

Kershaw says, “That supermarkets are in my blood, my Dad, Grandad and Great-Grandad all owned this store previously. Being able to provide great products and service to friends, family and the wider community is just what we do. I couldn’t imagine doing anything else, it’s a true passion.”

While the Four Square brand has adapted and moved with the times to ensure it has remained relevant in the hearts and minds of Kiwi shoppers there are a number of aspects which continue give it that nostalgic feel. One that immediately springs to mind is ‘Charlie’ or ‘Mr 4 Square’ who first came into being in the 1950s when he first started to appear in newspaper advertising and posters. Charlie eventually became an inherent part of the company’s national identity and was immortalised as a New Zealand icon in 1982 when Dick Frizzell gave the character the pop culture treatment.

The brand was renowned for a number of traditions in particular its 4th of July birthday celebrations where babies were gifted with teddy bears and Mums received anything from gift baskets, to baby food and Mini Coopers. Dads were not forgotten with cigars featuring as a popular gift back in the day. Four Square customer Ian Dowdall was going through his parent’s photos and papers recently and came across the original Four Square birthday letter sent to his mother following his birth on the 4th July 1965.

“Having just lost Dad I was taking a walk down memory lane and stumbled across this old letter from Four Square. I just had to send it to the company as it really took me back to my youth. I have so many fond memories of that teddy bear who unfortunately met an untimely end after years of being a firm favourite. It’s quite funny seeing the Van Hartog Coronita cigars as the gift for Dad, things are so politically correct now you’d never get a gift like that,” says Dowdall.

Four Square is continuing to reward its customers with this year’s birthday gifts including the opportunity to win a special edition Mini and celebration cake tins for customers who spend $30 or more in-store. Babies born on the 4th July this year will receive a free teddy bear and $50 gift vouchers, with two teddy bears and $500 going to twins born on this day.

eBay and Argos to extend their offering of Click & Collect services via Argos stores

Milton Keynes, UK, 2014-7-4 — /EPR Retail News/ — eBay and Argos today announced that they have entered an agreement to extend their offering of Click & Collect services via Argos stores. This extension will enable shoppers to select products from a much wider range of eBay sellers for collection from about 650 Argos stores.

The Click & Collect partnership commenced in September 2013 with 50 eBay sellers offering a selected range of products for collection in 150 Argos stores. The trial service proved successful operationally and incredibly popular with customers. A clear majority of those who have used the service and other click & collect services rate eBay’s Click & Collect at Argos as one of the best available.

It is anticipated that by the end of 2014 around 65,000 eBay sellers will offer items for collection at Argos, rising to around 80,000 in 2015. Argos will make the Click & Collect service available in about 650 of its stores.

The shopper experience couldn’t be simpler: buyers simply choose ‘Click and Collect at Argos’ as the delivery option in their eBay checkout and select their most convenient Argos store. Buyers receive a message when their item is ready for collection in their selected Argos store and proceed to a dedicated collection point in the store for fast and friendly service. Eligible sellers will be enrolled in the service and simply need to prepare orders for despatch as normal with eBay’s technology taking care of the rest.

LONDON, 2014-7-4 — /EPR Retail News/ — Centre for London, the politically independent, not-for-profit think tank and charity, today launches a report, ‘Local Owners’, that looks at how to unleash a new wave of employee ownership in the UK.

The report argues that while recent tax reforms have played an important part in laying the foundation for the expansion of Employee Ownership in the UK, delivering an employee ownership revolution now requires a decisive shift of policy focus to the local level.

Sponsored by the John Lewis Partnership, the report describes the development of three local ‘clusters’ of employee ownership in Europe and America and shows how the power of personal networks and cultural norms have helped these clusters to grow in size.

Drawing on the experience of these clusters, the report recommends a number of key policies to encourage the growth of employee ownership but stresses that this will look different in each locality, including: a new seed fund, mentoring prize for rising stars, toolkits for local ‘evangelists’, and events next year to inspire and share knowledge with entrepreneurs and business owners in England and Scotland.

Sainsbury’s to publish new book by ex-athlete Nikki Emerson

LONDON, 2014-7-4 — /EPR Retail News/ — Sainsbury’s is celebrating the lives of ordinary people who have done extraordinary things by publishing a new book by ex-athlete Nikki Emerson. Nikki’s book was published today this week and available at 592 Sainsbury’s stores nationwide, or as an eBook from eBooks by Sainsbury’s. It tells the story of how Nikki recovered from a near-fatal car crash and went on to win multiple medals on the track for Great Britain.

Nikki’s book, which is the first own-label autobiography in a new series “Ordinary People, Extraordinary Lives” to be published by Sainsbury’s tells how, inspired by the Paralympic athletes in the 2008 Beijing Games she watched on TV from her hospital bed, she found strength, courage and resilience beyond measure. Two years later, she won four medals at the Under 23 World Championships, placed 4th in the London Marathon, and was ranked among the top ten athletes in the world at senior level.

Nikki’s story has inspired Sainsbury’s to launch a search for the extraordinary real life stories that seemingly ordinary people can tell. Together with its publishing partner Constable and Robinson Sainsbury’s is inviting authors with incredible true life stories to submit their stories.

Phil Carroll, Head of Books at Sainsbury’s said: “I first approached Nikki to write her story because I wanted to publish a story about our amazing Paralympic athletes. LONDON, 2014-7-4 — /EPR Retail News/ — Sainsbury’s and British Athletics are bringing some of the world’s top athletes to Horse Guards Parade for the Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games on Sunday 20 July and today confirmed that a select number of races will take place on The Mall for the public to watch for free. Christine Bleakley today revealed more details about the free to watch races.

Leading athletes including six-time Paralympic Champion David Weir will mix with 50 lucky children selected from Active Kids schools and clubs across the country. While Weir will be returning to the scene of his greatest triumph at London 2012, the children will be balancing eggs and spoons, completing a unique ‘fun run’ along the iconic stretch.

The children will take on a number of sports day style activities, including egg and spoon race; target throws; hula hoop; ball skills and a space hopper race. The children have been chosen because their organisations are top collectors in Sainsbury’s famous Active Kids vouchers for equipment scheme. As part of the day, the kids and their families will also get tickets to watch their Olympic and Paralympic heroes compete in the Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games in Horse Guards Parade.

Sainsbury’s is proud to be a long-term partner of British athletics through its involvement in the Sainsbury’s Summer Series of athletics events, which include the Sainsbury’s British Championships in Birmingham (27–29 June), Sainsbury’s Glasgow Grand Prix (11–12 July), Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games at Horse Guards Parade and The Mall (20 July) and the Sainsbury’s Birmingham Grand Prix (24 August), as well as the IPC European Championships in Swansea.

Since 2005, Sainsbury’s customers have  donated over £136 million worth of equipment and experiences to organisations across the UK through Active Kids.

Four Sainsbury’s stores to host the retailer’s ‘The Big Jump’ event from 3rd to 6th of July

LONDON, 2014-7-4 — /EPR Retail News/ — Youngsters in Glasgow, Stirling and Edinburgh will have the chance to jump for glory at their local Sainsbury’s this weekend, as Scotland’s summer of sport heats up. Four Sainsbury’s stores are set to host the retailer’s ‘The Big Jump’ event, which will see a giant long jump track set up in a cordoned-off area of the store’s car park from 10am and 4pm between Thursday 3rd and Sunday 6th July.

  • Stores in Braehead, Stirling, Darnley and Blackhall to hold events
  • Open to 5-16 year olds
  • Event is free to enter and every participant will be entered into a free prize draw to win Sainsbury’s Glasgow Grand Prix tickets
  • Event takes place ahead of Sainsbury’s Glasgow Grand Prix on Friday 11 and Saturday 12 July

The jump launched on Thursday at Blackhall before it leaps over to Stirling on Friday. It will then head to Darnley on Saturday before finishing at Braehead on Sunday.  Paralympic disability runner Libby Clegg will be at Stirling store, encouraging children to take part and jump for glory, with a chance to win some great prizes.

The jump is free to enter and open to children between 5 and 16 years old. Each participant will be entered into a free prize draw, where two entrants will be selected at random to receive four tickets to the Grand Prix and take part in a special ‘Sainsbury’s Long Jump’ event at Hampden Park on Saturday 12 July.

The long jump will be one of the many competitions taking place at the Sainsbury’s Glasgow Grand Prix, which takes place on 11 and 12 July at Hampden Park. The Grand Prix is part of Sainsbury’s Summer Series, which is made up of five fantastic athletic and para-athletic events across the country, featuring the world’s best athletes. The Grand Prix will be the main prelude before the Commonwealth Games.

Sainsbury’s Blackhall Store Manager George Parton said: “It’s going to be a fantastic summer of sport in Scotland and, as proud sponsors of the Sainsbury’s Summer Series, we’re delighted to host our first ever long jump event. It’s a great way for children of all abilities to come down, take part and be a superstar athlete for the day”.

Every participant will get to take away their own personalised competition bib and have their jump distance measured. Families can also post photos onto the #TheBigJump Twitter feed.

47 Gold Medallists will be taking part in the Glasgow Grand Prix, including British Double Olympic champion Mo Farah and Olympic long jump champion Greg Rutherford.
