Boulogne-Billancourt, FRANCE, 2016-Oct-18 — /EPR Retail News/ — Carrefour is continuing with its commitment to tackling food wastage: the Group wants to reduce the quantity of the food that it wastes by 50% by 2025. In all of the countries in which Carrefour operates, we are implementing major initiatives and testing innovative solutions which will be unveiled on World Food Day.
“Regal Days” in Belgium
On 14, 15 and 16 October, Carrefour Belgium will be taking part in the “Regal Days” – the first edition of the Walloon initiative to tackle food wastage. The aim is to make sure that as many Walloons as possible are aware of this issue and to provide stakeholders involved in the food chain who are already committed to this initiative with a showcase.
Our customers can, for example, contribute to the drive to tackle food wastage by using the anti-wastage terminal where they can purchase repackaged fruit and vegetables at low prices. And the Mons Carrefour hypermarket has the distinction of having its own on-site kitchen where customers can buy dishes prepared using unsold fruit and vegetables.
#NoTiresComida in Argentina
Carrefour Argentina, working alongside the FAO (United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organisation), Argentina’s Ministry for Agriculture and Industry and a number of other stakeholders in the sector have set up National Anti-Food Wastage Day. Using the hashtag #NoTiresComida (#DontWasteFood), this campaign sets out to raise consumers’ awareness. Awareness-raising initiatives will run from 12 October to 9 November in 588 Carrefour stores.
“Food Waste Journey” in China
Carrefour China and Carrefour China Foundation for Food Safety are running an anti-food wastage initiative from October 2016 until June 2017 in all of its hypermarkets and in 16 convenience stores. Throughout this awareness-raising campaign, experts will be advising customers on how best to store fruit and vegetables.
“Call for Projects – click food power” in Taiwan
Carrefour Taiwan has opened the first “anti-wastage” restaurant: dishes are prepared using unsold foodstuffs that are still safe to eat, recovered from its stores and partner wholesalers. Menus are €2 per person. 20 disadvantaged young people have also been given training. Carrefour is the first retailer to donate unsold food in Taiwan. Just in front of the restaurant there is a “Community Share Fridge”, containing free food available for anyone in need.
Furthermore, with the national “Call for Projects – click food power” initiative, Carrefour Taiwan and the Carrefour Foundation will select ten NGO projects focused on tackling food wastage. Candidates have from 16 October until 25 December to submit their projects. At the end of this campaign, customers will be able to vote online for their favourite project. The five projects with the highest number of votes will receive awards from the Carrefour Foundation.
Fun events in France to raise people’s awareness
Carrefour has a ready distributed an educational Happy Families card game – the “Super Malins”. In the game, the Super Bricoolos, Packmen and Recygolos families discuss simple tips for finding numerous ways to tackle wastage, while having fun at the same time.
What’s more, from 17 to 22 October, customers will be able to enjoy awareness-raising campaigns and educational workshops for their children as they shop in Market stores.
From 13 to 15 October, the Montesson hypermarket will be featuring an anti-wastage route in its store, showcasing innovative initiatives that Carrefour is implementing in all the countries in which it operates. Anti-wastage buffet evenings devised by renowned chefs working with charity caterers in Montesson, Bordeaux, Lille, Aix-en-Provence and Ecully on the outskirts of Lyon. Throughout the day on Saturday 15 October, customers from the five hypermarkets staging these charity buffets will be able to take part in cooking lessons and anti-wastage workshops.
