Starbucks breaks ground for new store in Birmingham to support local economic development in Alabama

Starbucks breaks ground for new store in Birmingham to support local economic development in Alabama

Seattle, 2017-Jan-14 — /EPR Retail News/ — A Starbucks initiative to support local economic development in lower income communities expanded today (January 11) with a groundbreaking ceremony for a new store in Birmingham, Alabama.

The event, attended by Birmingham Mayor William A. Bell Sr. and representatives from Starbucks and other commercial retailers, took place in the city’s Five Points West area, a once-flourishing working-class community that’s experienced decades of decline. The Starbucks location, which is slated to open in the fall, will be part of a commercial corridor at Highway 11 and Avenue W. The $46 million Birmingham CrossPlex sports facility, which opened in 2011, anchors the city’s revitalization efforts in the historic African-American neighborhood.

Starbucks has opened four similar stores with classroom and training spaces as part of an effort to support local economic development in Ferguson, Missouri; Phoenix, Arizona; the Jamaica neighborhood of Queens, New York; and the Englewood neighborhood in Chicago’s Southside. These stores create meaningful jobs, provide in-store job-skills training programs for youth and invest in local minority-owned contractors and suppliers. Starbucks plans to expand the national initiative to four other communities in 2017, including neighborhoods in the Baltimore; Long Beach, California; Miami; and Seattle areas.

“Starbucks partnership with the City of Birmingham goes far beyond the norm,” said Mayor Bell (pictured above). “With this new investment in the Five-Points West district, Birmingham will continue its momentum on making innovation a key priority in 2017 and provide yet another example of how transformative a commercial project can be for a community. Starbucks is a very socially engaging company that, with the leadership fundamentals and the management training skills provided to local residents, will continue to build its brand throughout all areas of Birmingham.”

An Emphasis on Community Engagement

Starbucks strives to identify communities that have large opportunity gaps and a need for business engagement and investment, as well as the foundations for commercial success, according to Rodney Hines, Starbucks director of Community Investments for U.S. Retail Operations.

“We considered the impact Starbucks can have in this community, and whether it is a viable site in terms of driving business for us and being profitable,” Hines said. “It’s the convergence of those two considerations – community impact and impact on business – that led to this site being right for us. It’s a residential community with a commercial corridor and a significant civic building – the Birmingham CrossPlex sports facility – that’s there for the county and the city.”

Hines said the Birmingham store, like predecessors in Ferguson, Phoenix, Chicago and Jamaica Queens, will strive to “bring the community to life” with local hires, homegrown artwork and a training space for opportunity youth – young people ages 16-24 who are not in school or employed. A search for a nonprofit partner and locally based store manager is already underway.

“Starting with the groundbreaking and leading up to the opening, we meet and build relations with civic and community leaders, including members of the police force, so that there’s a great foundation that welcomes us in the community,” Hines said.

Jennifer Hicks, Starbucks regional director of operations, expects the store to be embraced by local residents.

“There are not a lot of places to connect in the Five Points neighborhood of Birmingham,” she said. “The thing that’s important is the community aspect that Starbucks brings. We’ve heard residents are looking forward to having that in the neighborhood.”

2016 College Football Playoff Semifinal: Alabama and Washington at The 49th annual Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, Dec. 31, Georgia Dome

2016 College Football Playoff Semifinal: Alabama and Washington at The 49th annual Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, Dec. 31, Georgia Dome

ATLANTA, 2016-Dec-12 — /EPR Retail News/ — The No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide and the No. 4 Washington Huskies are set to meet in the 2016 College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.

The 49th annual Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl will be held on Dec. 31 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta and will be nationally televised by ESPN. Game time is set for 3 p.m. ET.

“This is a phenomenal dream matchup as Alabama and Washington will both be playing in their first Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl,” said Percy Vaughn, Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl chairman. “It’s going to be an unmatched atmosphere in the Georgia Dome with these two programs and their passionate fan bases.”

“These two conference champions have had remarkable seasons and we are thrilled to welcome each of them to Atlanta,” said Gary Stokan, Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl president and CEO. “This game will be the best matchup in our history and the most significant college football game ever played in Atlanta.”

Alabama (13-0, 8-0 SEC) enters the game as champions of the Southeastern Conference.  The Crimson Tide are the defending national champions and have won 25 games in a row under Head Coach Nick Saban, including eight Top 25 wins this season alone. Alabama boasts the nation’s No. 1 defense, leading the nation in a number of statistical categories including total defense and scoring defense. The unit as a whole has contributed 10 touchdowns, which leads the nation. The offensive side of the ball is full of playmakers, led by true freshman quarterback Jalen Hurts, who has accounted for 34 total touchdowns and more than 3,400 yards of total offense. Saban is a previous winner of the prestigious Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Award as Coach Saban took home the coveted Dodd Trophy in 2014.

“Washington has a very good football team and we are looking forward to the challenge. They have some outstanding players on offense – great skill players, a great quarterback, very good offensive line and they play tremendous defense,” said Alabama Head Coach Nick Saban. “We are excited to be returning to Atlanta for the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl and the College Football Playoff. The Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl is a first-class event run by a first-class organization. Our team and our fans have enjoyed several trips to Atlanta over the years, and the city has always been a great host. We are looking forward to playing there once again.”

Washington (12-1, 8-1 Pac-12) enters the game as champions of the Pac-12 Conference. Head Coach Chris Petersen has led Washington’s resurgence that now has them once again competing for a national title. Washington has won 12 games for the first time since 1991 when they won a share of the national championship. Led by Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year Jake Browning, the Huskies’ offense has smashed school records for points and touchdowns, and currently ranks No. 4 in scoring offense in the nation. On the defensive side of the ball, Washington’s ball-hawking unit leads the nation in turnover margin. Coach Petersen is also a former winner of the Dodd Trophy, having won it in 2010.

“We couldn’t be more pleased, and I mean that. That’s an obvious statement but I know how hard it is to get where we are in terms of how well you’ve got to play, and our kids have played really, really well,” said Washington Head Coach Chris Petersen.  “You’ve got to have luck along the way and have the ball bounce your way. So we’re just really thankful and grateful for this opportunity. I think it’s awesome for the school. I think it’s awesome for Seattle and I think it’s awesome for our guys.”

Alabama leads the all-time series with Washington 4-0 dating back to 1926. They have twice met on a neutral field, including the most recent meeting in El Paso, Tex. in 1986.

Opioid overdose-reversal drug naloxone now available in CVS pharmacies in Alabama, Alaska, Illinois, Missouri and West Virginia

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2016-Oct-03 — /EPR Retail News/ — CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) today (September 29, 2016) announced it has expanded access to the opioid overdose-reversal drug naloxone in Alabama, Alaska, Illinois, Missouri and West Virginia, allowing CVS Pharmacy patients to access the medication without an individual prescription. In total, CVS Pharmacy patients in 36 states now have increased access to the life-saving opioid overdose-reversal drug. CVS Health’s naloxone program establishes a standing order with a physician in the state or utilizes pharmacists’ prescriptive authority to permit CVS Pharmacists to dispense naloxone to patients without an individual prescription. Pharmacists in these five states began dispensing the medication this week.

“Naloxone is a safe and effective antidote to opioid overdose and by expanding availability of this medication, we can save lives and give more people a chance to get the help they need for recovery,” said Tom Davis, RPh, Vice President of Pharmacy Professional Practices at CVS Pharmacy. “By establishing a physician-authorized standing order that allows our pharmacies to dispense naloxone to patients without an individual prescription, we strengthen our commitment to helping the communities we serve begin to address the challenges of prescription drug abuse.”

“Expanding access to the overdose-reversal drug naloxone is a critical part of our national strategy to stop the prescription drug and heroin overdose epidemic along with effective prevention, treatment, and enforcement,” said Michael Botticelli, Director of National Drug Control Policy. “Thanks to efforts on naloxone like those announced today by CVS Health, more Americans will have access to this lifesaving drug.”

The move to expand access to naloxone builds on CVS Health’s longstanding commitment to help communities address and prevent drug abuse through education, outreach and safe medication disposal. CVS Health’s commitment to drug abuse prevention education extends from online resources launched for patients visiting to two robust youth prevention programs. Launched last year, CVS Health’s Pharmacists Teach program gives its pharmacists the opportunity to volunteer to speak to high school health classes about the dangers of drug abuse. More than 100,000 students have already been part of the program. Recently, the company also announced a partnership with to create a peer-to-peer prevention and intervention program delivered to young people via text message and online.

CVS Health has also joined with the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids to create the Medication Disposal for Safer Communities Program, which has donated more than 600 drug disposal units to police departments around the country. The program gives members of the community a safe and environmentally friendly way to dispose of unwanted medication and has already collected more than 47 metric tons of prescription drugs.

“CVS Health has been a leader in the work of helping communities prevent prescription drug abuse,” said Marcia Lee Taylor, President and CEO, Partnership for Drug-Free Kids. “In addition to proper disposal of unwanted medication, increasing access to naloxone is a critical public health priority that allows patients and their families to prevent opioid fatalities and recognize when people need help working towards recovery from the disease of addiction.”

With the addition of the five new states where CVS Pharmacy locations began dispensing naloxone to patients without a prescription this week, CVS Pharmacy locations in the following 36 states now offer naloxone: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas,California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky,Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana,New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota,Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont,Virginia, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin.
