Kuala Lumpur set to be first overseas city to implement smart city solution

Kuala Lumpur, 2018-Feb-03 — /EPR Retail News/ — Alibaba Cloud, the cloud computing arm of Alibaba Group, today (January 29, 2018) announced the launch of its Malaysia City Brain initiative in collaboration with the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), the country’s digital economy development agency, and Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL), the city council in the capital, at a ceremony in Kuala Lumpur.

The Malaysia City Brain initiative is a significant milestone because it’s the first time for the City Brain solution to be adopted overseas. It is developed on Alibaba Cloud’s robust cloud computing infrastructure and will support Malaysia’s digital transformation with cloud technology and artificial intelligence.

Powered by Alibaba Cloud’s large-scale computing engine Apsara, Malaysia City Brain offers a comprehensive suite of acquisition, integration, and analysis of big and heterogeneous data generated by a diversity of sources in urban spaces through video and image recognition, data mining and machine learning technology. The power and functionality of the City Brain will enable Malaysian urban planners and city officials to upgrade their city governance and decision-making to turn the city into an intelligent one.

In the first phase of the program, the capital Kuala Lumpur will roll out the Malaysia City Brain for use in traffic management to improve mobility in the city. With its massive cloud computing and data processing capabilities, the City Brain can optimise the flow of vehicles and traffic signals by calculating the time to reach intersections. It will also be able to generate structured summaries of data, such as traffic volume and speed in particular lanes, which can be used to facilitate other tasks including incident detection.

In addition, City Brain can connect with various urban management systems including emergency dispatch, ambulance call, traffic command, and traffic light control. By integrating and analysing real-time data generated from these systems, City Brian can optimize urban traffic flow such as by identifying the quickest route for emergency vehicles to arrive at the scene within the shortest time frame.

As the City Brain’s functionality expands, enterprises, start-ups, entrepreneurs, universities, and research institutions will in the future also have the opportunity to access and leverage its artificial intelligence tools to drive a wide range of innovation.

Malaysia Tianchi Big Data Program

At the same event, Alibaba Cloud also announced the Malaysia Tianchi Big Data Program, a big data crowd intelligence platform that brings together global data experts to collaborate and compete in developing solutions for real world problems. Backed by MDEC, the initiative aims to incubate 500 data professionals and 300 startups in Malaysia within two years by facilitating the use of world class data intelligence technology through Alibaba Cloud’s cloud computing infrastructure and artificial intelligence capabilities.

The Malaysia Tianchi Big Data Program will be integrated into Alibaba Cloud’s Tianchi global community which already boasts over 120,000 developers and 2,700 academic institutes and businesses from 77 countries and regions. By participating in these big data competitions, Malaysian experts will compete with, and learn from, counterparts across the globe to develop best-in-class data technology, keeping Malaysia at the forefront of the global digital economy.

Malaysia City Brain and Tianchi are just the latest step in a successful partnership between Alibaba and MDEC. In March 2017, Alibaba Group announced the setup of the first overseas e-hub under Electronic World Trade Platform (eWTP) in Malaysia. Alibaba Cloud has made significant progress on this endeavour since. In October 2017, Alibaba Cloud opened a data center in Malaysia, which became the first global public cloud platform in the country. The data center provides Malaysian enterprises with a local choice to build their businesses on a powerful, reliable and secure cloud platform.

New data center adds to global coverage and provides world-leading capabilities to key market

Beijing, 2017-Dec-22 — /EPR Retail News/ — Alibaba Cloud, the cloud computing arm of Alibaba Group, announced today (December 20, 2017) that clients can start to sign up for services to be delivered in its new India data center, which is set to open in January 2018. Located in the city of Mumbai, this new data center will help meet the surging demand for cloud computing services among the fast-increasing number of Indian small and medium size businesses in the region.

India is a key market in Alibaba Cloud’s globalization strategy, and the firm sees tremendous business opportunity given the rapid growth of the Indian economy and the nature of the enterprises looking to expand from the country. Alibaba Cloud’s vision to empower enterprises anywhere in the world to go global is now extended to Indian clients with a comprehensive suite of high-performance cloud products including large-scale computing, storage resources, and big-data processing capabilities. Guangzhou, 2017-Nov-24 — /EPR Retail News/ — Alibaba Group and FIFA announced today Alibaba Cloud – the cloud computing arm of Alibaba Group – as Presenting Partner of the FIFA Club World Cup until 2022. The announcement was made on the occasion of the Computing Conference held by Alibaba Group in Guangzhou.

Commenting on the agreement, FIFA’s Director Marketing Sales and Strategy, Iain Downie said: “We are aware of the substantial value that Alibaba Cloud provides to business in terms of technical support and global reaching services. We can only see great potential in this fresh collaboration related to the FIFA Club World Cup.”

Beginning at this year’s edition of the tournament, which will be hosted in the UAE from 6 to 16 December, as the Presenting Partner, Alibaba Cloud will design and provide the MVP (most valuable player) award. In additional celebration of the partnership, the FIFA Club World Cup Winner’s Trophy was exhibited during the announcement and at the Computing Conference.

The FIFA Club World Cup is a FIFA-organised international football tournament, featuring the current champion football clubs from each of the six football confederations, as well as the national league champion from the host country. In previous tournaments some of the biggest footballing stars in the world have participated, including global superstars such as Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez and Cristiano Ronaldo, who had all been named tournament best players in past editions of the tournament.

Alibaba Cloud, National University of Singapore and EZ-Link to boost Singapore’s smart computing and data-driven capabilities

Singapore, 2017-Jan-24 — /EPR Retail News/ — Alibaba Cloud, the cloud computing arm of Alibaba Group, the National University of Singapore (NUS), and EZ-Link, Singapore’s largest issuer of Contactless e-Purse Application (CEPAS) compliant cards, today (Alibaba Group) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate and boost Singapore’s smart computing and data-driven capabilities.

The collaboration between the three organizations will bolster the University’s data science curriculum and pave the way for a pilot data analytics project with EZ-Link. It will also help build local IT skillsets, meet enterprise demands and support the research and development of advanced technologies in the Big Data era.

Mr. Ethan Yu, Vice President of Alibaba Group and General Manager of Alibaba Cloud Global said, “Singapore has been a pioneer in fostering innovation and technological disruption in Asia, and we are proud to contribute to the nation’s development through our partnership with NUS and EZ-Link. Alibaba Cloud announces the opening of four new data centers in the Middle East, Europe, Australia and Japan

Hangzhou, China, 2016-Nov-23 — /EPR Retail News/ — Alibaba Cloud, the cloud computing arm of Alibaba Group, today (November 21, 2016) announced the opening of four new data centers by the end of 2016 in the Middle East (Dubai), Europe, Australia and Japan. As a major milestone of Alibaba Cloud’s global expansion, the new centers will boost its data center network to 14 locations, covering key economic centers around the world. The data center in the Middle East, located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, commenced initial operations today.

Alibaba Cloud’s expansion will provide customers worldwide with improved latency and greater access to its diverse offerings, including data storage and analytics services, enterprise-level middleware, and cloud security services. Strengthening Alibaba Cloud’s position as a major global cloud provider, the new data centers will support Alibaba Cloud’s growing client base beyond the current 2.3 million.

Through a stronger network of facilities and strategic partnerships, Alibaba Cloud also plans to drive a globalization of innovation. The enhanced cloud capabilities make breakthrough innovation a real possibility with artificial intelligence, deep learning and data analytics.

Middle East

Alibaba Cloud will be the first major global public cloud services provider to offer cloud services from a local data center in the Middle East. The opening of the Dubai Data Center is held in conjunction with YVOLV, a joint venture of Alibaba Cloud and Meraas Holdings, a Dubai-based holding company with a portfolio spanning across key economic sectors in the United Arab Emirates. YVOLV will support and drive Dubai’s Smart City vision by leveraging Alibaba Cloud’s sophisticated cloud computing technologies to create new applications and big-data tools for customers in the region.

Europe

To support enterprises in Europe, Alibaba Cloud will partner with Vodafone Germany to open its first data center in Europe. The center is co-located in Vodafone’s data facilities in Frankfurt, Germany, one of the leading technology hubs in Europe with a highly developed infrastructure supporting technological innovation. Australia

Extending its global footprint in the Asia-Pacific, Alibaba Cloud will open a new data center in Sydney, Australia by the end of 2016. Alibaba Cloud will bring its most popular cloud services in data storage and processing services, enterprise-level middleware, and cloud security services to the Australian market. A dedicated team will be based in Australia, and build up a cloud ecosystem with local technology partners to drive cloud and big-data business in the region.

Japan

The Japan Data Center, hosted by SB Cloud Corporation, a joint venture between Softbank and Alibaba Group, will provide Japanese enterprises with competitive and enhanced public cloud computing services from Alibaba Cloud. With the joint venture, Alibaba Cloud will further expand its cloud computing service platform by leveraging SoftBank’s extensive enterprise customer base in Japan.

Alibaba Cloud announces partnership with HTC Corporation to explore high scalable and price-competitive virtual reality solutions

Beijing, 2016-Aug-10 — /EPR Retail News/ — Alibaba Cloud, the cloud computing arm of Alibaba Group, today announced strategic partnership with HTC Corporation (‘HTC’), the pioneer in innovative smart technologies. Both companies will join hands to explore high scalable and price-competitive virtual reality (“VR”) solutions for customers worldwide.

Leveraging the advanced cloud computing technology of Alibaba Cloud, the companies will focus on developing breakthrough innovative solutions to tackle bandwidth allocation, data transmission and data processing needs in areas such as VR video production and VR broadcasting. Alibaba Cloud has successfully helped a VR team from Zhejiang University to render a three-minute 360-degree 3D VR video in only 3 days. The required computing capacity for the video was 100,000 processor cores and is the equivalent to non-stop processing by a 12-core high performance server for more than 8,000 hours.

Alibaba Cloud establishes second availability zone in Singapore

Singapore, 2016-Jun-22 — /EPR Retail News/ — Alibaba Cloud, the cloud computing arm of Alibaba Group (NYSE: BABA), announced today that it has expanded its data center operations in Singapore with the establishment of a second availability zone. Alibaba Cloud has also achieved two new certifications overseas — Singapore Multi-Tier Cloud Security (MTCS) standard Level 3 and the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI-DSS).

In September 2015, Alibaba Cloud established a data center in Singapore to provide enhanced cloud and big data services across Southeast Asia. The establishment of a second availability zone provides higher capacity to meet enterprise users’ demands for high availability and disaster recovery.

“The expansion of our Singapore data center enables us to meet the rapidly growing demand for cloud computing resources in Southeast Asia. This expansion also demonstrates our ongoing commitment to providing one-stop global cloud and big data services to both Chinese and international enterprises. Alibaba Cloud has established overseas data centers in the United States, Hong Kong and Singapore, and plans to establish new data centers in other regions including Japan, Europe, the Middle East and Australia.

The Multi-Tier Cloud Security (MTCS) Singapore standard was developed under the direction of the Information Technology Standards Committee (ITSC) for cloud service providers in Singapore. The MTCS standard has three different levels of security standards, and Alibaba Cloud has achieved the highest security (Level 3) certification.

The achievement of MTCS Level 3 certification is on top of the Information Security Management System Certification ISO27001 and Cloud Security Alliance (CSA) Star certification which Alibaba Cloud received previously. It facilitates Alibaba Cloud’s international expansion amid enterprises’ demand for higher security services from cloud service providers as cloud adoption continues to grow.

In addition, Alibaba Cloud has also achieved the PCI-DSS compliance certification for its public cloud services in Singapore and the United States. PCI-DSS is a payment card security qualification, which is highly valued by payment card businesses and related companies. Compliance certification involves the evaluation of payment card data security in areas like credit card numbers, CVV2 numbers, as well as account / password transmission and storage security.
