Edison, NJ, 2017-Nov-23 — /EPR Retail News/ — Wakefern Food Corp. presented a $50,000 check to the American Red Cross at its corporate offices on Tuesday, Nov. 21.

Red Cross representatives who accepted the check on Tuesday said the money will help with ongoing hurricane relief efforts focused on providing shelter, food and water to people who continue to struggle in places like Puerto Rico, Texas and Florida. The American Red Cross responds to nearly 66,000 events and disasters each year.

Working with trusted partners like the Red Cross and the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, ShopRite and Wakefern have donated supplies and funds while ShopRite associates volunteered their time, talent and resources to make a difference in communities that are still hurting. Wakefern and ShopRite donated more than $100,000 in supplies and funds to hurricane relief over the last few months, including the donation of 100,000 bottles of water to storm ravaged Puerto Rico.

After Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico on Sept. 20, ShopRite reached out to its network of charity partners who were consulting with disaster relief agencies on the ground to assess the situation and determine what goods were most needed on the battered island. ShopRite worked with the Community FoodBank of New Jersey to deliver 50 pallets of water to Newark Airport, where a United Airlines plane delivered the water to hard hit San Juan, Puerto Rico. ShopRite also sent truck drivers to Puerto Rico to help with the difficult process of food and water delivery on the island.

A ShopRite tractor-trailer loaded with supplies was also dispatched to the Houston Food Bank in September to help Hurricane Harvey victims in Texas.

ShopRite donated $50,000 to the American Red Cross and 100,000 bottles of water to Puerto Rico

Keasbey, NJ, 2017-Oct-16 — /EPR Retail News/ — ShopRite this month donated $50,000 to the American Red Cross and 100,000 bottles of water to hurricane ravaged Puerto Rico, and last month a ShopRite tractor-trailer loaded with supplies was dispatched to the Houston Food Bank to help Hurricane Harvey victims in Texas.

In the wake of three devastating hurricanes affecting Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico, ShopRite is supporting several relief efforts to help people rebuild their lives. Working with trusted partners like the Community FoodBank of New Jersey and the American Red Cross, ShopRite has donated $100,000 in supplies and funds while ShopRite associates volunteered their time, talent and resources to make a difference in communities that are hurting.

After Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico on Sept. 20, ShopRite reached out to its network of charity partners who were consulting with disaster relief agencies on the ground to assess the situation and determine what goods were most needed on the battered island.

ShopRite worked with the Community FoodBank of New Jersey to deliver 50 pallets of water to Newark Airport, where a United Airlines plane was ready to deliver the water to hard hit San Juan, Puerto Rico. ShopRite’s Transportation team also sent truck drivers to Puerto Rico to help with the difficult process of food and water delivery on the island.

“We have real experience in supporting communities in times of crisis. It’s part of a long tradition of community commitment at ShopRite and we are proud to be able to support the latest relief efforts in Puerto Rico and other areas hit hard by hurricanes this season,” said Christine Magyarits, ShopRite’s community relations manager.

The ability to tap a supply chain of warehouses and fleet of trucks enables ShopRite to respond to crises with targeted action.

On Sept. 10, ShopRite sent a tractor-trailer filled with food and supplies – everything from granola bars and protein packets to toothpaste, shampoo and diapers – to the Houston Food Bank to help victims of Hurricane Harvey in Texas. Several associates, pictured right, volunteered to drive the truck to Houston. Many of the family-owned ShopRite stores across six states in the northeast are also supporting locally-organized hurricane relief efforts in the communities where those stores operate.

NACS partners with American Red Cross to advance community giving and disaster relief programs for NACS member companies

ALEXANDRIA, Va., and WASHINGTON, DC, 2017-Jun-27 — /EPR Retail News/ — The American Red Cross and NACS, the association representing the nation’s 154,000-plus convenience stores, announced that they have developed a partnership to advance community giving and disaster relief programs for NACS member companies. NACS is the first retail-focused association to partner with the American Red Cross on such a program.

The groups are currently focusing on developing resources to facilitate donation collection by convenience store companies nationwide, as well as encourage volunteer assistance programs for Red Cross volunteers around specific local or national events.

Convenience stores contribute nearly $1 billion a year to charitable organizations. Four in five convenience store companies (80%) say they’ve made donations when there was a specific emergency or crisis in the community, according to a 2016 NACS member survey.

The announcement of the partnership is aligned with the Atlantic hurricane season, which began June 1. The Red Cross responds to nearly 64,000 disasters each year, most of which are home fires, and deploys volunteer disaster relief workers to support their efforts. Donations are crucial to the success of their missions and NACS will be working closely with its members to help them achieve their goals.

“NACS and the American Red Cross are closely aligned in how they make a meaningful difference in communities. Convenience stores are in every community in the country and they often are the only retailer open in times of episodic events. This agreement, developed with our NACS Foundation, will help advance the existing programs in which convenience stores provide immediate access to donations as well as food, fuel and beverages for volunteers,” said NACS President and CEO Henry O. Armour.

“We’re extremely excited to partner with NACS and its members as they work with us to provide help and hope to people impacted by disasters,” said Don Herring, chief development officer at the American Red Cross. “Donations through their network of convenience stores and customers will allow the Red Cross to deploy volunteers, respond immediately with food and shelter during a disaster, as well as support disaster survivors through the recovery process.”

NACS and the American Red Cross will develop and disseminate tools and resources for retailers at convenience.org/redcross.

NACS advances the role of convenience stores as positive economic, social and philanthropic contributors to the communities they serve. The U.S. convenience store industry, with more than 154,000 stores nationwide selling fuel, food and merchandise, serves 160 million customers daily—half of the U.S. population—and has sales that are 10.8% of total U.S. retail and foodservice sales. NACS has 2,100 retailer and 1,750 supplier members from more than 50 countries.

Friday, Nov. 11, 2016, Harris Teeter will present The American Red Cross with a check for $183,873 to assist disaster relief efforts throughout our local communities affected by Hurricane Matthew, which made land-fall in early October.

This donation is made possible by the success of Harris Teeter’s Emergency Support Campaign which the company hosted to benefit its neighbors who were displaced or affected by the storm. The campaign launched Oct. 13, 2016 and ran through Oct. 28, 2016. During this time, Harris Teeter invited its shoppers and associates at all locations to donate $1, $3 or $5 at checkout.

One-hundred percent of proceeds from the in-store campaign will be given to American Red Cross and will be allocated specifically to efforts directly related to Hurricane Matthew domestic relief.

“We are extremely grateful for the generosity of our loyal shoppers and valued associates. Without them, this donation would not be possible,” said Danna Robinson, communication manager for Harris Teeter.  “In addition to the funds collected in our stores, Harris Teeter donated 17 truckloads of bottled water, seven truckloads of ice and nearly $30,000 in food donations to community members throughout North & South Carolina immediately following the storm.”

The American Red Cross exists to provide compassionate care to those in need and responds to disasters ranging from home fires that affect a single family to hurricanes that affect tens of thousands, to earthquakes that impact millions.

Price Chopper/Market 32 stores supported the American Red Cross through the “Give What Fire Takes” campaign

SCHENECTADY, NY, 2016-Nov-02 — /EPR Retail News/ — During the month of September, customers at Price Chopper/Market 32 stores were once again invited to support the American Red Cross through the “Give What Fire Takes” campaign. NewsChannel 13 joined the effort as a media partner to help raise awareness of local home fire relief and preparedness efforts. On Wednesday, October 26, Price Chopper/Market 32 presented a check for $36,249 to the Red Cross, representing $31,249 raised by their teammates and customers and a $5,000 match from Price Chopper/Market 32.

“Price Chopper is proud of our longstanding partnership with WNYT NewsChannel 13 and the Red Cross to raise awareness and funds that help victims of disasters regionally, nationally and internationally,” said Mona Golub, Price Chopper/Market 32’s vice president of public relations and consumer services. “Unlike our emergency response efforts to known disasters, this campaign aims to raise awareness about fire prevention and equip the Red Cross with funds in anticipation of the more than 400 annual fires that devastate the lives of friends and neighbors right here in this region. The ‘Give What Fire Takes’ campaign provides an accessible and reliable way for our teammates and customers to help victims of disaster right here at home.”

“We at WNYT NewsChannel 13 were proud to partner with Price Chopper and the American Red Cross on the ‘Give What Fire Takes’ campaign in September,” said Vice President & General Manager Steve Baboulis. “We truly appreciate what the Red Cross does to support not only the families who have been victimized by a blaze, but to promote fire safety education as well. And of course, we are always happy to partner with our good friends at Price Chopper on community service efforts like this one.”

All funds raised through the “Give What Fire Takes” campaign enable the Red Cross to provide critical services to people impacted by home fires, along with lifesaving tools and information to support home fire prevention efforts. Wednesday’s check presentation was held at the Schenectady Fire Department, where the Red Cross and its partners will kick off a city-wide event on Saturday, November 12 to educate local residents about fire safety and install free smoke alarms for families in need.

“The support we receive from Price Chopper, Market 32, NewsChannel 13, and all those who answer the call to ‘Give What Fire Takes’ is critically important,” said Gary Striar, chief executive officer for the American Red Cross Eastern New York Region. “We’re grateful for this gift because it ensures not only that we can provide relief to hundreds of local fire victims this year, but also that we can help people prepare with lifesaving tools and resources, which we’ll be providing right here in Schenectady on November 12.”

Starbucks joins the White House to support American Red Cross efforts to aid refugees and migrants

SEATTLE, 2015-10-8 — /EPR Retail News/ — With millions of refugees fleeing conflicts in Syria and other areas and seeking safety across Central and Western Europe, Starbucks is compelled to use the scale of its digital platforms to raise funds for crisis relief organizations.

Today, Starbucks is joining the White House and other companies to use our collective digital properties and social media presence to encourage customer support of American Red Cross efforts to aid refugees and migrants.

Noting that more than seven million people – roughly the population of New York City, where the Statue of Liberty stands today – have been displaced, and over half of the refugees are children, a White House blog post stated, “We have a moral responsibility to do what we can for families forced from their homes. We can join together to provide shelter, food and medical assistance to these people in need. It’s the American thing to do.”

Starbucks and the White House are encouraging donations to the Red Cross. A flyer will be posted on community boards in Starbucks stores informing customers of the effort, visible on social media through the hashtag #AidRefugees. In addition, Starbucks partners (employees) who contribute at least $20 to any 501(c)(3) organization in the U.S. may submit a matching gift request through the company’s community service website.

“Many of these migrants and refugees have risked everything in search of safety for their families. They have faced unimaginable hardships along the way, but continue their journeys with hope for the future. Their needs are great, but together we can provide crucial relief supplies and some level of comfort in their time of need,” said David Meltzer, general counsel and chief international officer of the American Red Cross.

The Starbucks Foundation has already made donations to: Save the Children, a non-profit organization focused on providing urgent relief and long-term aid to refugee children and their families; Aktion Deutschland Hilft, an alliance of respected aid organizations leading refugee support in Germany; and Caritas, a non-profit which is doing the same work across Austria and other European countries.

“As a company, we don’t sit on the sidelines during a humanitarian crisis. By creating awareness and supporting the Red Cross in providing food, shelter and medical care, we can make a difference to those affected by the refugee crisis,” said Vivek Varma, executive vice president Starbucks Public Affairs. “Together, we can be proud of what we can accomplish.”

Publix Super Markets collects money for American Red Cross disaster relief to assist areas in Carolinas affected by severe weather

LAKELAND, Fla., 2015-10-6 — /EPR Retail News/ — Today Publix Super Markets established a program to offer its customers and associates a way to directly assist those areas in the Carolinas affected by recent severe weather. Customers may donate any amount by adding it to their grocery totals when checking out at Publix registers. Collected money will be channeled through the American Red Cross for disaster relief. The program will continue for a few weeks, based on customer response.

In related efforts, the Bahamas was recently affected by Hurricane Joaquin. The Bahamas Red Cross Society fully activated their Emergency Operations Centre and is coordinating closely with the Government’s National Emergency Operations Centre (NEMO). The American Red Cross is monitoring these efforts, and the Red Cross Pan-American Disaster Relief Unit continues to provide support to the Bahamas Red Cross.

“Our customers and associates have trusted Publix to react quickly and help those affected by tragic circumstances,” said Maria Brous, director of media and community relations. “The catastrophic flooding has impacted our immediate operating area, and we are looking to provide assistance to our neighbors and to the communities we serve. In addition, Hurricane Joaquin left behind devastation to the Bahamas, which also hits close to home as we have many associates and their families from the islands. We continue to monitor the situation in the Bahamas with the American Red Cross and wait to hear if an appeal for assistance is requested.”

Publix is also coordinating truck load donations of water and shelf-stable food with the South Carolina Emergency Management Division as well as other nonprofit organizations.

In a separate donation, Publix Super Markets Charities is donating $100,000 to American Red Cross for relief efforts in the impacted areas.
