WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2016-Jun-08 — /EPR Retail News/ — MinuteClinic, the retail medical clinic of CVS Health, has opened eight new locations inside Target stores inMaryland, including six in the Baltimore metropolitan area. MinuteClinic introduced new digital tool for patients to view wait times and hold a place in line

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2016-May-31 — /EPR Retail News/ — MinuteClinic, the retail medical clinic of CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) which operates more than 1,100 retail medical clinics in CVS Pharmacy and Target stores across the United States, has introduced a new digital tool that allows patients to view wait times at most locations and hold a place in line from the convenience of their smartphone, computer or tablet.

The new system is currently available to patients visiting MinuteClinic locations inside CVS Pharmacy stores and Longs Drugs in Hawaii. It will be expanded to Target-based clinics later this year. The service debuts at the same time as MinuteClinic expands its suite of health care services and surpasses 30 million patient visits.

“Since introducing the first store-based, walk-in clinics in 2000, MinuteClinic has consistently developed new ways to evolve its model to make health care services more convenient for today’s consumer,” said Andrew Sussman, M.D., President of CVS MinuteClinic and Executive Vice President and Associate Chief Medical Officer of CVS Health. “We know patients are demanding added convenience as they interact with the health care system. The option to hold a place in line gives patients more choices and flexibility and will allow for prompt care when arriving at our clinics. We think of it as the ‘cure for the common wait’.”

To use MinuteClinic’s new digital tool, patients start by viewing current wait times online at the clinic they’d like to visit. They then enter the reason for their visit and provide an email address or phone number in MinuteClinic’s secure system to receive a confirmation code and reminder messages via email or text. Patients are given an estimated time to arrive at the clinic. Once at the selected clinic, they sign in at the kiosk and enter their unique confirmation code. They are then ready to be seen as soon as the practitioner is available based on the order in which the confirmation was received.

While bringing more convenient care options to its growing patient base, MinuteClinic has also added a variety of new medical services that include treatment of sprains and strains, gout, joint pain, indigestion and heartburn, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

In addition, MinuteClinic is expanding women’s health and counseling services to include contraceptive care. Available to patients over 18 years of age (19 in some states), MinuteClinic practitioners can see women interested in starting birth control or changing their present method of contraception to develop a customized plan.

Increasing patient demand is the impetus for adding these new services, according to Sussman.

“We’ve worked closely with our collaborating physicians, health system affiliates, and our practitioner team to develop a consistent and thoughtful approach to expand and introduce new services that are within the scope of practice of our nurse practitioners and physician assistants,” said Sussman. “We employ evidence-based guidelines in our treatment plans. Having seen more than 30 million visits in 16 years, we hope to continue to bring innovations and convenience to the way health care is delivered today.”

Nurse practitioners and physician assistants at MinuteClinic specialize in family health care and can diagnose, treat and write prescriptions for common family illnesses such as strep throat; ear, eye, sinus, bladder and bronchial infections; nausea, vomiting and diarrhea; indigestion. Acne, rashes and skin conditions; sprains and strains; and minor wounds and abrasions are also treated. Common vaccinations are available at most locations, such as influenza, tetanus, pneumonia and Hepatitis A & B.

Prevention and wellness services include screening and monitoring for diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, tuberculosis (TB) testing, contraceptive care, motion sickness prevention and smoking cessation.

At the conclusion of each visit, patients receive educational material, a prescription (when clinically appropriate) and a visit summary. A copy of the diagnostic record can be sent electronically, or by fax or mail, to a primary care provider with patient permission.

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2016-May-25 — /EPR Retail News/ — MinuteClinic, the walk-in medical clinic of CVS Health (NYSE: CVS), announced today a new initiative with the Department of Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System to expand access to high quality and convenient health care services for Veterans in Northern California. Through this initiative, more than 60,000 Veterans who are enrolled in the VA Palo Alto HCS can now be referred to MinuteClinic for acute health services.

“We are pleased to announce this new initiative with the VA Palo Alto Health Care System,” said Andrew Sussman, M.D., Executive Vice President and Associate Chief Medical Officer, CVS Health and President, MinuteClinic. “Through this arrangement, MinuteClinic and the VA Palo Alto will join forces to provide Veterans in Northern California with additional options for high quality clinical services. We’re committed to providing top-notch care to the area’s Veterans and this relationship will allow us to do so in locations and at times that are convenient for the VA’s patients.”

VA Palo Alto HCS consists of three inpatient facilities located at Palo Alto, Menlo Park, and Livermore, plus seven outpatient clinics in San Jose, Fremont, Capitola,Monterey, Stockton, Modesto, and Sonora. Veterans who call the VA Palo Alto’sNurse Helpline (1-800-445-0057) can be referred to one of 14 area MinuteClinic locations for treatment of common illnesses. As an added convenience, Veterans who are written a prescription at a MinuteClinic visit will be able to fill it at CVS Pharmacy.

“This program reaffirms our commitment to access through innovation and flexible health care delivery,” said Dr. Stephen Ezeji-Okoye, Deputy Chief of Staff, VA Palo Alto Health Care System. “The diverse geography of our Veteran population requires us to think about access as providing the right care at the right place at the right time – as defined by the Veteran. We are particularly excited about working with MinuteClinic because they share our commitment to high quality care and our belief in meeting Veterans needs as efficiently and effectively as possible.”

MinuteClinic and the VA Palo Alto will utilize an interconnected electronic medical record (EMR) system, which will advance clinical care for the Veterans treated through the arrangement. After patient consent, participating MinuteClinic locations will electronically send patient visit summaries to the patient’s primary care physician at the VA. If more comprehensive care is needed, Veterans will be directed to follow up with their VA primary care provider for additional services as appropriate.

“By allowing our electronic health records to communicate and share important clinical information, we’ll have a more comprehensive view of the Veterans we collectively serve, which will enable important health care decision making and ensure continuity of care,” Sussman added.

Nurse practitioners at MinuteClinic specialize in family health care and can diagnose, treat and write prescriptions, as appropriate, for common family illnesses such as strep throat; ear, eye, sinus, bladder and bronchial infections; nausea, vomiting and diarrhea; and heartburn and indigestion. Minor wounds, abrasions, skin conditions, sprains and strains are treated, and common vaccinations such as influenza, tetanus, pneumonia and Hepatitis A and B are available at most locations.

MinuteClinic opens its first retail clinics in Maine inside CVS/pharmacy stores in Portland and South Portland

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2015-11-6 — /EPR Retail News/ — MinuteClinic, the largest and fastest growing provider of retail-based medical clinics in the United States, has opened its first retail clinics in Maine inside CVS/pharmacy stores in Portland and South Portland. State Senator Anne Haskell will join in a ribbon cutting today at the Portland clinic.

MinuteClinic now has more than 1,000 clinics in 33 states and the District of Columbia inside select CVS/pharmacy stores.  There are nearly 100 clinics in five New England states:  Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island.

Clinics are open seven days a week, including weekday evening hours. No appointment is necessary.  About 50 percent of MinuteClinic visits occur on evenings, weekends and holidays.

“As we have experienced elsewhere in New England and across the United States, MinuteClinic can support the primary care medical home by offering services at convenient locations near where patients live and work and at times when traditional options for care may not be available for Portland area residents,” said Andrew Sussman, M.D., president, MinuteClinic and executive vice president/associate chief medical officer, CVS Health. “We know there is a need for more accessible and affordable health care in Maine, and we believe the demand for MinuteClinic services will continue to grow due, in part, to the shortage of primary care physicians, the aging Baby Boomer population and the influx of newly insured patients through the Affordable Care Act.”

MinuteClinic nurse practitioners specialize in family health care and can diagnose, treat and write prescriptions for common family illnesses such as strep throat and ear, eye, sinus, bladder and bronchial infections. Minor wounds, abrasions, skin conditions and joint sprains are treated, and common vaccinations such as influenza, tetanus, pneumonia and Hepatitis A & B are available at most locations.

In addition, MinuteClinic administers a series of wellness services designed to help patients identify lifestyle changes needed to improve their current and future health, including screenings and monitoring for diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, and smoking cessation and weight loss management services.

Most health insurance is accepted at MinuteClinic. For patients paying cash or credit, treatment prices are posted at each clinic and on www.minuteclinic.com. The cost for most treatment starts at $79 – $99.

At the conclusion of each visit, patients receive educational material, a prescription (when clinically appropriate) and a visit summary. A copy of the diagnostic record can be sent electronically, or by fax or mail to a primary care provider with patient permission.

Approximately half of MinuteClinic patients nationwide do not have a personal physician, according to Sussman. Individuals who visit MinuteClinic without a primary care provider are given a list of physicians in the area who are accepting new patients.

MinuteClinic walk-in medical clinics in Maine operate from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Friday; 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

CVS Health to work with 3 telehealth companies to improve patient care

Company will work with American Well, Doctor On Demand and Teladoc to improve access to patient care through telehealth

Woonsocket, Rhode Island, 2015-8-27— /EPR Retail News/ — CVS Health (NYSE:CVS) today announced that it is working with three proven telehealth companies – American Well, Doctor On Demand and Teladoc (NYSE:TDOC) – to explore how direct-to-consumer telehealth providers, retail pharmacy and retail clinic providers can collaborate to improve patient care.  This represents an expansion of CVS Health’s existing telehealth approach.

“During our initial phase of exploration of telehealth in our store-based clinics, we learned that we could deliver excellent quality care and that patients were extremely satisfied with the care provided,” said Andrew Sussman, M.D., executive vice president/associate chief medical officer, CVS Health and president, MinuteClinic.  MinuteClinic data recently published in the Journal of General Internal Medicineshowed that overall, 95 percent of patients were highly satisfied with the quality of care they received, the ease with which telehealth technology was integrated into the visit, and the timeliness and convenience of their care.

“As we examine additional ways to utilize telehealth to improve and expand patient care, we have the opportunity to partner with telehealth organizations in the care of patients at home,” Sussman added. “In doing so, CVS Health will add value for patients, clients and health plans by improving access to low-cost quality care.”

CVS Health is piloting several different telehealth opportunities, including making telehealth physician care accessible through CVS Health digital properties.  CVS Health will also explore enabling MinuteClinic providers to consult with telehealth physicians to expand the scope of care offered at MinuteClinic.  In addition, MinuteClinic will continue to provide telehealth care to patients in CVS retail stores and will explore serving as a site for in-person exams to facilitate telehealth medical visits.

“With the increased demand for patient care anticipated in future years as a result of the expansion of coverage through the Affordable Care Act, the primary care physician shortage, aging of the population and epidemic of chronic disease, telehealth gives us the opportunity to offer high quality care to an expanded group of patients in a variety of convenient and cost-effective locations,” Sussman concluded.

This announcement is part of CVS Health’s broader commitment to connected health, exploring new and effective ways that digital technology can improve the health care experience. “A key pillar of our strategy is forging the right partnerships within the industry,” said Brian Tilzer, senior vice president and chief digital officer, CVS Health. “We recognize that some of the best ideas are already being developed, so we’re committed to partnering with other companies to explore and expand on these ideas together.”

“We are delighted that CVS Health has joined the roster of top health plans, employers, and hospitals that trust American Well for their telehealth services,” said Ido Schoenberg, CEO of American Well.  “Together we can offer consumers far more convenient access to affordable, quality care in the community and at home.”

“We started Doctor On Demand to provide immediate access to some of the best board-certified physicians in the country. We all know how hard it is to get fast treatment for common but acute medical issues,” said Doctor On Demand Co-Founder and CEO Adam Jackson. “Working with CVS Health gives us an opportunity to care for the millions of Americans that trust CVS Health with their health and wellness needs.”

“Caring for CVS Health customers is a great privilege and responsibility,” said Jason Gorevic, chief executive officer, Teladoc. “Consumers are choosing telehealth because it is a convenient and effective way to receive care. Teladoc is the pioneer of this innovative model, and we are excited to partner with CVS Health to increase the ways in which its customers can access high quality and affordable care.”

Woonsocket, RI, 2015-8-24— /EPR Retail News/ — MinuteClinic, the walk-in medical clinic of CVS Health, today announced that it will be enhancing accessibility for patients with visual, hearing and other disabilities. The plan is designed to enhance MinuteClinic’s services and to remove barriers that may impede persons with disabilities from utilizing the clinics’ services.

“We are committed to providing the highest level of medical care and access to all, and are constantly looking at our delivery model to ensure that we’re meeting the needs of the communities that we serve,” said Andrew Sussman, M.D., President, MinuteClinic and Executive Vice President/Associate Chief Medical Officer, CVS Health.

CVS Health Research Institute: High patient satisfaction with the quality of care delivered via telehealth at MinuteClinic retail medical clinics

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2015-8-19— /EPR Retail News/ — New data from the CVS Health (NYSE:  CVS) Research Institute demonstrates very high levels of patient satisfaction with the quality of care delivered via telehealth at MinuteClinic retail medical clinics. Satisfaction with quality of care and other factors were measured among patients participating in a pilot program of telehealth care rolled out at MinuteClinic locations in California and Texas in 2014, and the findings were published on-line in the Journal of General Internal Medicine.

“In the United States today, approximately a quarter of patients do not have a primary care provider or have incomplete access to one,” said William Shrank, M.D., chief scientific officer, CVS Health. “This lack of access, combined with an increased demand for care resulting from expanded coverage under the Affordable Care Act, and the challenge of finding convenient care for patients balancing work and personal responsibilities, necessitate exploration of alternative, high quality care options such as telehealth in the MinuteClinic setting.”

The study evaluated de-identified responses from more than 1,700 patients who participated in the MinuteClinic telehealth pilot. Patients had services at a CVS MinuteClinic location, provided by a remote clinician using telehealth technology. Patients were asked if they had health insurance and a primary care provider and rated their satisfaction with a number of measures associated with their telehealth visit, including quality of care and convenience. Patients were also asked to rank their experience of a telehealth visit as compared to that of a traditional visit, when the patient and a health care provider are face-to-face, in the same room. Overall, 95 percent of patients were highly satisfied with the quality of care they received, the ease with which telehealth technology was integrated into the visit, and the timeliness and convenience of their care. In addition, one-third of patients indicated that they preferred a telehealth visit to a visit with a clinician in the same room, in particular those patients without health insurance, and nearly all found telehealth to be just as good as or better than a traditional visit.

“MinuteClinic has long been focused on providing accessible, high quality, affordable health care that is complementary and supportive of the primary care provider,” said Andrew Sussman, M.D., President, CVS/minuteclinic, and executive vice president/associate chief medical officer, CVS Health. “Telehealth provides us with an opportunity to offer convenient, high quality care to an extended group of patients and this data confirms that patients are highly satisfied with this new type of health care provider visit.”

As a health care provider, MinuteClinic is focused on delivering high quality, accessible care for common illnesses. MinuteClinic is committed to continuity of care, fully supports the physician-led medical home and believes that MinuteClinic can play a complementary role with primary care practices in providing care to patients. MinuteClinic is affiliated with more than 60 major health systems around the country to improve collaboration, integrate medical records and collaborate on chronic disease care.

The CVS Health Research Institute is focused on contributing to the body of scientific knowledge related to pharmacy and health care through research collaborations with external academic institutions, participation in federally-funded research, analysis and sharing of CVS Health data sources and coordination of pilot programs and initiatives. CVS Health Research Institute findings support a continuous quality improvement environment, which encourages product innovation and development to benefit CVS Health patients, clients and their members.
