Animal Team Rider develops Junior Surf Team at the Animal Surf Academy

The Animal Surf Academy (ASA) in Polzeath, Cornwall has announced the addition of the Animal Grom Team. With Animal pro surfer Alan Stokes teaming up with the ASA to lead the programme, they will develop an elite junior team with the ASA instructors. This progressive training will breed a new level of surfers who will be mentored by a UK surf hero who will pass on invaluable knowledge from his years on the Pro Tour.

Alan ‘Stokesy’ Stokes is one of the UK’s most established surfers with multiple British titles under his belt and a very large Air Miles account. His dedication & competitive streak has put him at the top of his game, ranking European no. 2 Junior at the start of his career and he’s stayed at the top ever since. Alan won the UK Pro Surf Tour in 2009 and scored a career best finishing 5th at the Boardmasters World Qualifying Series event in Newquay.

Stokesy commented: “It doesn’t matter how good you are, everyone benefits from a bit of coaching and mentoring and I’m proud to be part of the program. I really enjoy working with the Groms, it takes me back to when I was their age and I’m stoked to see young surfers progress. We have some great youth talent in this country and I’m proud to work with these rippers to help them get to a higher level.”

Animal, The Freesports Apparel Brand Has Just Returned From A Very Successful Week At The BRITS Event In Laax, Switzerland

The Animal Slopestyle Championships opened its start gate for the freeski section, which this year saw some familiar faces on the UK Pro ski scene make their play for the title. Having had such a high standard of skiing at last year’s event, the crowds didn’t know what to expect for 2010 but were not disappointed as the competitors excelled themselves with an array of tricks and jumps.

Representing Animal on the pro ski team, both James Webb and Paddy Graham had strong practice runs and were up against some tough names. Unfortunately, worsening snow conditions caught Animal skier James Webb out but Paddy Graham’s smooth run and technicality earned him a well deserved Silver.

After the success and boost in profile generated by the recent Olympic Boarder X event there was a clear raise in the stakes among this year’s competitors. Animal pro snowboarder Kate Foster set the 3rd fastest time in qualifying and progressed through her heats into the final. In a closely fought final, the win went to Charlotte Banks with Kate battling with Ivy Taylor and taking 3rd place and with it her spot on the podium and a bronze medal.

Event Manager Sonia Shaw commented: “The BRITS is the most anticipated snow event of the year and Animal proudly sponsors the most coveted title ‘The Animal Slopestyle’, a course that encompasses everything that skiing and snowboarding can offer: big air, rails and wall rides. The event was electric and having the Animal Pro Team win so many medals was just the icing on the cake for us”.

To reward its customers, the Animal E-Store is offering 50% off all Technical clothing. The Animal Technical range has been completely designed by the in-house design team working very closely with the Animal Pro team to ensure Animal clothing is not only functional and durable but bang on trend. Key features include fully taped seams, waterproof zips, detachable powder skirts with linking systems for pants, chamois wipes, lift pass cuffs and internal pockets for goggles, phones and audio devices.

Animal Crowns UK Pro Surf Tour Champions

The Animal team cleaned up the top spots of the UK Pro Surf tour at the final decider event in Newquay at the weekend. Alan Stokes claimed the overall men’s open tour title and Gwen Spurlock became overall women’s open tour champion too. This is a great finish for Gwen who has taken home the Welsh Junior and British Junior titles already this year.

Animal Crowns UK Pro Surf Tour Champions

The Animal Newquay open was the final stop of the gruelling six round tour that took the cream of UK surfers round the UK best breaks. After the stormy conditions provided by Mother Nature on day one, meaning the event was moved to Towan beach, the competition returned to Fistral. Day two saw a challenging chunky 6ft swell and a strong cross-shore SSW wind testing competitors. Each heat of the day was watched closely by the onlookers to find out who would win overall.

The weekend started with Stokesy holding a slender lead but with six surfers all in with a chance of taking the men’s Pro open tour title. As the heats progressed the contenders were eliminated leaving Newquay surfers Tom Butler and Alan Stokes as the last challengers remaining in the semi finals. Stokesy won his semi but Tom was unable to find the best waves and 3rd place kept him out of the final and handed the victory to Stokes.

Stokesy commented, “It means so much to take this title, it’s the hardest UK title to win as the championship is contested over 5 events. These new chargers like Tom Butler and Reubyn Ash pushed me all the way and made it an anxious but fantastic final event.”

In the Women’s event strong performances were put on by Zoe Sheath and Gabi Rowe. This wasn’t enough to take the overall title from Gwen Spurlock who won the overall UK Pro Surf Tour Women’s event thirty points ahead of the pack. Gwen’s story is one of a true champion, after winning the junior tour in 2007 a serious head injury kept her from the water in 2008. Now sporting a helmet Gwen has not only returned, but won the tour title.

On finding out she’d won the tour Gwen said, “Boom. I’m amazing.” She was pretty stoked that she had won the title.
