  • Teavana Partners with Girls Inc. in Support of Youth Education, Mentorship, College Readiness and Training
  • Continuing with Starbucks Long-term Commitment to Provide Pathways to Opportunity for Young People, Teavana Donates $100,000 to Benefit Young Women across the U.S. and Canada

Seattle, 2015-7-8 — /EPR Retail News/ — Teavana (NASDAQ: SBUX) today announced a national partnership with Girls Inc., a nonprofit organization that inspires all girls to be strong, smart, and bold, while providing life-changing experiences and solutions to address challenges girls face as they look to higher education and career paths. The partnership, which is the beginning of a longer term relationship between the two organizations, will help support specific programming for college readiness and life skills training across six affiliate organizations in the U.S.

Beginning with Atlanta, Georgia; Holyoke and Worcester, Massachusetts; Orange County, California; New York City and Westchester County, New York, Teavana’s initial investment in Girls Inc. will support hundreds of young women, primarily ages 14-17, as they prepare for the transition from high school to college or from high school to a career. Girls will learn about college during summer camps and workshops, develop into strong leaders through community service and training, and be supported and honored by caring mentors, their peers, and their communities. Girls Inc. supports diverse young women ages 6 – 18 and provides tailored support for these young women of underserved communities.

To celebrate the beginning of this partnership, Annie Young-Scrivner, president, Teavana and Judy Vredenburgh, President and CEO, Girls Inc. hosted a mentoring session for New York-based Girls Inc. girls at the 9th & Broadway Teavana tea bar in New York City. The event was attended by female media correspondents and bloggers, who also participated in the speed mentoring session, providing advice to young women on how to be successful during the college years and aspire to a fulfilling career. Starbucks and Teavana partners (employees), as well as Girls Inc. staff were at the tea bar to celebrate the partnership and provide mentoring support for the girls in attendance.

“It has always been a core value of Teavana to give back to the communities it serves and this newly formed partnership with Girls Inc. further supports that commitment to encourage our youth and ensure that we are engaging in the needs of the young people in local communities,” stated Annie-Young Scrivner, president, Teavana.

“Through Starbucks and Teavana we will continue to create pathways to education, mentorship, and training by hiring youth and developing the critical life skills necessary to being a productive contributor to the economic workforce. We are so proud to be partnering with Girls Inc. to support the future leaders of our communities,” she added.

“Girls Inc. is honored to be partnering with Teavana to further deepen our programming for young women in the areas of college readiness, mentoring and training, advancing the opportunities for hundreds of girls with this first investment,” said Judy Vredenburgh, President and CEO, Girls Inc. “We are committed to inspiring girls to be strong, smart, and bold and to promote the ability of all girls to achieve academic success and higher education. We are so thankful for Teavana’s leadership in supporting our mission.”

Teavana’s awareness of the great work by Girls Inc. began more than a year ago through Starbucks partnership with Oprah Winfrey and Teavana Oprah Chai Tea. A portion of the proceeds from Teavana Oprah Chai benefits the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy Foundation, which in turn provides funding to Girls Inc., among several other youth education organizations.*

Starbucks and Teavana are more committed than ever to giving back to local communities and serving young people. Starbucks recently made a commitment to hire 10,000 young people who are not in school or are unemployed over the next 3 years. Starbucks is also making college education possible for thousands of employees through the Starbucks College Achievement Plan, which has 2,000 partners enrolled in the program with a goal to graduate 25,000 partners by 2025.

As the relationship between Teavana and Girls Inc. evolves, the two organizations will look for opportunities to provide full and part-time jobs at Starbucks and Teavana through job fairs and other networking sessions, giving the girls who become employed by Starbucks and meet eligibility requirements access to health benefits, Bean Stock, and access to a college education through the Starbucks College Achievement Plan.

Free 16-ounce Pineapple Berry Blue iced tea on National Iced Tea Day at Teavana®

During National Iced Tea Month, Customers are Invited to Learn About the Exquisite, Epicurean Loose Leaf Tea Blends That Create an Unparalleled Iced Tea Beverage at Teavana

Seattle, 2015-6-2 — /EPR Retail News/ — To celebrate National Iced Tea Month, Teavana (NASDAQ: SBUX), a leader in high-quality loose leaf teas and beverages, is encouraging iced tea drinkers to reimagine and up-level their iced tea experience, with an invitation to come in to a participating Teavana® store for a free 16-ounce Pineapple Berry Blue  iced tea on National Iced Tea Day, June 10, while supplies last.

According to the Tea Association of the USA, 85 percent of tea consumed in America is iced tea, and loose leaf iced tea is gaining in popularity. Teavana features some of the most unique and flavorful premium loose leaf teas using some of the finest full tea leaves along with ingredients like fruits, flowers and spices.

Reimagining the Tea Experience

Teavana loose leaf teas are made from some of the finest whole tea leaves and the epicurean blends combine the best of science and artistry to bring out bold and exotic flavors.

“High-quality, loose leaf tea allows our customers to truly experience the subtleties and the full flavor of our straight teas and epicurean blends,” said Naoko Tsunoda, tea authority and director of tea development at Teavana.  “Whether you’re new to tea or a tea enthusiast, that first sip of delicious, loose leaf iced tea immediately transforms the way one thinks about this refreshing beverage. The delicious, bold, exotic flavors are perfect for celebrating summer with family and friends.”

Free Iced Pineapple Berry Blue Tea on National Iced Tea Day

Tea lovers can visit participating Teavana stores all day on June 10 to receive a free 16-ounce Pineapple Berry Blue iced tea, no purchase required (one free Pineapple Berry Blue iced tea per customer, while supplies last). With juicy, vibrant berry flavors blended with sweet tangy pineapple, Pineapple Berry Blue is refreshing when served iced, perfect for those warm summer months.

“What I love about loose leaf iced tea is the different flavors that you can create. Sometimes I take two or three of our blends and steep them together to uncover a delicious and refreshing treat,” said Tsunoda. “Pineapple Berry Blue is a result of blending Pineapple Kona Pop and Blueberry Bliss Rooibos together.”

Inspired by the rich blueberry fruit, Blueberry Bliss uses a South African green rooibos base, as its natural citrus notes complement the sweet berry notes. Pineapple Kona Pop is an herbal blend, inspired by tropical Hawaii with its quality fruit and indigenous flowers.

Growing Popularity of Tea in the U.S.

“Tea is on the rise across America, with iced tea now the most consumed beverage at lunch time. In our Starbucks stores where Teavana tea is served; our tea sales rose 15 percent year-over-year mostly due to the popularity of our Teavana shaken iced tea,” said Annie Young-Scrivner, president, Teavana. “We have hundreds of iced tea options, and we welcome customers to join us at Starbucks or Teavana to experience some of the highest-quality and most delicious teas.”

100 Teavana Teas to Explore

“Our vibrant blends offer customers delicious refreshment and there is no better way to start the loose leaf tea journey than with one of our very own epicurean blends, like Pineapple Berry Blue,” continued Young-Scrivner. “Teavana stores offer 100 different teas for our customers to enjoy and explore.”

Iced Tea Happy Hour June 11-14

To continue the iced tea celebration, customers can visit participating Teavana stores June 11 – June 14 from 3-6pm local time for 50 percent off a 16-ounce iced tea beverage and learn how easy it is to make iced tea at home (one per customer, while supplies last). Whether enjoying a favorite tea or trying something new, customers are encouraged to share their iced tea discoveries on Twitter and Instagram using #TeavanaTime.

Bring the Loose Leaf Iced Tea Experience Home

Making homemade loose leaf iced tea is easy and delicious, and with Teavana products like the Modern Iced Teamaker, it’s simple to steep a large batch of iced tea, perfect for summer entertaining.

“When making iced tea, I recommend exploring and tasting different flavors that blend well together. Try blending fruity and fruity, fruity and floral, or even pure teas with fruity overtones using a rooibos, black or herbal tea, or a flavored or scented green tea, to serve over ice,” said Tsunoda.

Adds Tsunoda, “More than 30 percent of consumers drink iced tea at home, but only 10 percent are drinking loose leaf tea. Gone are the days of brewing iced tea from oversized tea bags or putting a jar in the sun. This is how people should be enjoying iced tea and we encourage customers to taste the difference for themselves.”

To enjoy loose leaf iced tea at home, first double the amount of loose leaf tea used in a regular brew. If a sweet tea is preferred, add Perfectea® rock sugar to the brewer first and then add hot water, giving a little stir until dissolved. Then add the loose leaf tea and steep for the allotted period of time.  By adding the rock sugar first our beautiful crystallized rock sugar will dissolve evenly and elevate the natural sweetness of our blends.

“Our Perfectea rock sugar is my sweetener of choice,” said Tsunoda. “Made of Belgian beets, this sweetener elevates and maintains the integrity of the multi-layered flavor profile we designed for iced teas.”

After the hot tea is brewed, immediately pour tea into a glass or pitcher filled with ice, as the sudden cooling keeps the flavor and scent of the tea intact.

“Once you see how easy it is to brew loose leaf iced tea, there are fun ways to add your own signature elements to your beverage,” said Tsunoda.

Tsunoda recommends trying the following to elevate the iced tea experience:

Flavor Cubes: Be the hostess with the mostess and impress guests by freezing flavor cubes from the iced tea blend in the ice cubes. Instead of using water to make iced cubes, use another iced tea beverage for a layered visual dynamic and flavor profile.

Getting Fizzy with It: Make a sparkling tea for the ultimate summer refreshment. Simply brew double-strength tea with sweetener to taste; let it cool and then add sparkling water.

Iced Tea-tini: Turn a favorite iced tea into a cocktail by chilling the double-strength brewed tea sweetened to taste, then mixing it with a favorite spirit. Serve over ice or in a martini glass with garnish.

Marie Claire magazine features Teavana president Annie Young-Scrivner

SEATTLE, 2015-1-27 — /EPR Retail News/ — The 15 million women around the world who read Marie Claire magazine are looking for fashion and beauty trends, but they want more. They’re turning the pages or checking online to find inspiration and learn from female role models.

February’s edition features a “power profile” of Annie Young-Scrivner, president of Teavana and an executive vice president at Starbucks. In addition to highlighting Young-Scrivner’s leadership roles at Starbucks – including serving as president of Starbucks Canada, president of Tazo Tea, and Starbucks global chief marketing officer – the two-page article touches on some of the challenges she’s faced on her journey to becoming a top business executive.

Young-Scrivner, now 46, was born in Taiwan to Chinese parents and moved to Seattle when she was 7 years old.

“I remember second grade, coming to the U.S., learning my ABC’s,” she told the magazine. “My dad had worked for Kodak and could speak English fluently. When he moved here, he worked for a shipping company.  My mom, who is an accountant, didn’t know any English. She had to go to community college just to learn enough so she could get back into the accounting world.”

As a teenager, Young-Scrivner began working in a department store for the health benefits and to help pay her way through college. That store is now owned by Macy’s, and Young-Scrivner serves as the youngest member of the Macy’s Board of Directors. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration-Marketing from the University of Washington’s Foster School of Business and a Master of Business Administration degree from the Carlson School of Business at the University of Minnesota.

Her road to the top included driving a delivery truck. After graduating from college, she began a 20-year career at PepsiCo as a route sales representative. That involved loading an 18-foot truck with Frito-Lay products, then stocking grocery store shelves.

“My alarm went off at 2:30 a.m. every day, but I saw it as a huge opportunity to learn from the ground up,” she said.

In the Marie Claire article, Young-Scrivner reflects on her career path and success and shares this sentiment with readers:

“Dream big. That’s one thing my parents taught me,” she said. “I look at myself, a little Chinese girl who didn’t know a bit of English. I am here today because I was able to dream big.”

Additional advice she shares with readers, “Find something you are authentically passionate about. I was a huge fan of Starbucks way before I came to work for the company. I worked in 27 different countries and had 27 different Starbucks mugs. I was a fanatic.”

Now, as president of Teavana, she’s leading the charge to do for tea what Starbucks has done for coffee.

“We will continue to deliver an unparalleled super premium tea experience and transform our retail experience, leveraging our expertise in tea, tea blending and innovation,” said Young-Scrivner.

Teavana currently has 365 stores and 6 tea bars, with ambitions to re-imagine the tea experience for customers around the globe. Beginning in the U.S. and Canada, the Teavana team has their sights on expanding into new channels and across international markets, sharing their passion for super-premium tea, exclusive gifting and entertaining.

Starbucks donates $2 million to Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy Foundation benefitting educational opportunities for youth from Teavana® Oprah Chai Tea sales

SEATTLE, 2014-10-9— /EPR Retail News/ — Since the April launch of Teavana® Oprah Chai Tea, Starbucks has donated nearly $2 million to the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy Foundation benefitting educational opportunities for youth in communities across the U.S., Canada and South Africa. Every person who purchases Teavana® Oprah Chai Tea is making a difference through the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy Foundation, which in turn provides further funding to Girls Inc., National CARES Mentoring Movement, Pathways to College and U.S. Dream Academy.

As part of its commitment to provide lifelong opportunities for young people, Starbucks will continue to make a donation to the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy Foundation for each Teavana® Oprah Chai Tea product sold in Starbucks® and Teavana® stores in the U.S. and Canada. These contributions  support powerful mentorship, educational and engagement programs for youth through several nonprofit organizations.

Finding her Talent for Science – Girls Inc.

Andrea’s family struggled financially and at one point moved in with family members. One of the organizations receiving support from the Oprah Leadership Academy Foundation, Girls Inc.,  gave Andrea and her sisters opportunities to participate in a range of activities in science, sports, theater and college preparation classes.

When Andrea was five years old, she started attending Girls Inc. in Carpinteria, California after school where she found her passion for science through an animal care program. A year later she started conducting science experiments at Girls Inc., which she credits for providing her the academic foundation needed to excel in the advanced science and math classes in high school.

“Girls Inc. helped me in so many ways,” Andrea said. “I developed self-confidence and Girls Inc. provided me a safe, positive environment so I could focus on school instead of everything going on at home.”

Now 19 years old, she is attending Harvard University, studying to become a pediatric doctor.

Mentoring – when done well – can play a pivotal role in helping young people succeed in life. Research shows that mentoring relationships help reduce the incidence of delinquency, substance abuse and academic failure. According to a recent study, The Mentoring Effective: Young People’s Perspectives on the Outcomes and Availability of Mentoring, there are 9 million at-risk young people who will reach adulthood without connecting with a mentor.

Learning to “dream big” – U.S. Dream Academy

Stephon Littles and his niece Dahmierah Baker were in elementary school when their fathers were incarcerated in unrelated incidents. Both children felt alone and were unsure of their futures. They didn’t have supportive adults around to help guide them during a painful time in their young lives. Then they found U.S. Dream Academy, one of the beneficiary nonprofit organizations.

“My mother was a single parent while my father was incarcerated. Coming to the Dream Academy helped me cope with my secret pain. I was also challenged academically and learned how to dream big from my mentors,” said Stephon.

“Times were not easy when my dad was incarcerated,” said Dahmierah, now 19. “The U.S. Dream Academy taught me how to cope with my emotions. It made me realize that I am loved no matter what and that there are people who care and who will always there to help me,” she said.

Dahmierah is a sophomore in a Philadelphia community college pursuing a degree in nursing.

According to the U.S. Dream Academy, there are approximately 10 million children in the United States who have been impacted by incarceration of a family member.  Without intervention, some studies suggest that these children are six times more likely than their peers to be incarcerated. However, having a supportive adult outside of the family can have a mitigating effect.

Everyone Can Make a Difference in A Young Person’s Life

Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy Foundation, Girls Inc., U.S. Dream Academy, National CARES Mentoring Movement and Pathways to College depend on fundraising efforts and alliances such as the collaboration between Starbucks and Oprah Winfrey.

Starbucks is making a donation from each purchase of Teavana® Oprah Chai Tea products. Here are a few examples on how Starbucks support helps:

$5 will provide supplies for one mentoring session with the National CARES Mentoring Movement.

$100 will provide healthy snacks for 200 children for a day of programs and mentoring at U.S. Dream Academy, or 15 hours of academic, recreation and support after school.

$50 provides supplies for one group-mentoring session for middle school students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).

“It’s amazing to see how our customers and our partners have embraced the Teavana® Oprah Chai Tea and the opportunity to give back to the community in an impactful way,” said Annie Young-Scrivner, president, Teavana®. “The fact that we’ve been able to donate nearly $2 million to the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Foundation in just six months is remarkable, and we will continue to drive donations through the sale of Teavana® Oprah Chai Tea. Each and every one of us can make a difference and this alliance makes it easy to enjoy a delicious Teavana® Oprah Chai Tea and feel good about supporting youth through these incredible nonprofit organizations.”

Customers may enjoy Teavana® Oprah Chai Tea in a variety of ways. Each purchase supports the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy Foundation to help benefit youth education. For each purchase, Starbucks will donate the following:
