SPAR Austria introducES new organic SPAR enjoy ice tea range

Austria, 2017-Dec-01 — /EPR Retail News/ — After the successful launch of the SPAR enjoy super fruit juice range earlier this year, SPAR Austria has tapped into another beverage trend with the introduction of its new organic SPAR enjoy ice tea range, which comes in various delicious flavour combinations: Turmeric & Ginger, Rooibos & Herbs and Barley & Spearmint. The range is now available in all SPAR, EUROSPAR and INTERSPAR stores across the country.

The ice tea is produced in a small tea factory in Upper Austria, where great attention is given to the quality of ingredients. The 100% carefully selected and harvested organic and Fairtrade herbs and spices include South African rooibos tea, regionally produced herbs, Austrian-grown barley and exotic mint. The unique combination of flavours give SPAR enjoy organic ice tea an incomparably refreshing and delicious taste.

The ice tea range contains only 5.5 grams of organic cane sugar per 100ml. This once again underlines SPAR’s efforts to reduce sugar in its own brand products. Less sugar not only means fewer calories, it also means that one gets a better appreciation of the natural ingredients used.

SPAR Austria’s new ice tea range doesn’t just impress through its unique taste, but also through its environmentally friendly packaging – coming in 330ml glass bottles, which are re-sealable and re-usable.

SEATTLE, 2017-Nov-29 — /EPR Retail News/ — Amazon Music today (Nov. 28, 2017) announces “The U2 Experience”: a first-of-its-kind broadcast for Amazon Music designed with the voice experience in mind. Launching simultaneously across multiple time zones on November 29 at 6 pm EST, “The U2 Experience” is a new type of radio, filled with historical and new exclusive content produced by Amazon Music and available to U2 fans who tune in from the U.S., UK, Germany, and Austria, ending just before the release of the band’s upcoming album, Songs of Experience, on December 1. In a new way of listening, the broadcast will also be available to all Prime members and Amazon Music Unlimited subscribers in the U.S. and UK through Alexa, on Amazon Echo devices, simply by asking, “Alexa, play The U2 Experience.”

“I hope you don’t need to know anything about U2, or anything about the context, to enjoy [Songs of Experience],” says U2 guitarist, The Edge. “I think it’s an album of just classic songs, great melodies great hooks, great lyrics. I think there’s very few bands in the history of rock and roll that have been around and made as many albums as we have with the same lineup…that perspective is unique, you know? On the last record [Songs of Innocence] we wrote about where we came from. How this band came together, Dublin of the late 70s early 80s, and this new record is the companion album. But it’s from this current perspective now… So many years later, what have we learned?”

For a limited time, fans will be able to drop into the broadcast and begin listening wherever the unique audio is currently in progress. “The U2 Experience” features a chronology of the band’s career, including commentary surrounding the significance behind iconic songs and legendary stories from the road, as told through live broadcast interviews with the band spanning nearly 40 years. Also included are some of the legendary rock group’s biggest hits, and live recordings of songs from The Joshua Tree and Songs of Experience, recorded during The Joshua Tree Tour 2017. The immersive audio show also includes a new and exclusive interview with U2 and Amazon Music’s global head of programming, Alex Luke, which took place during a stop in Sao Paolo, Brazil on tour this Fall.

“Few bands have as storied a career as U2, and we saw an incredible opportunity to build a broadcast for their fans,” said Luke. “This all goes back to voice innovation, and what we’ve built is an immersive, ephemeral listening experience for our customers, with a wealth of interviews and content going back nearly 40 years.”

In a brand-new format for Alexa, Amazon’s cloud-based voice service, Prime members and Amazon Music Unlimited subscribers in the U.S. and UK can simply ask, “Alexa, play The U2 Experience,” and will immediately be dropped into the broadcast, wherever the unique audio session is currently in progress. “The U2 Experience” is available to listen on the mobile app and Web Player in the U.S., UK, Germany, and Austria, to all customers with an Amazon Music account, with or without an Amazon Prime membership or Amazon Music Unlimited subscription, available only before the launch of U2’s new album, Songs of Experience, on December 1. Immediately following the show, the band’s new album, Songs of Experience, will be available to purchase on Amazon Music and stream for Amazon Music Unlimited subscribers.

“The U2 Experience” is the latest feature to launch within Amazon Music’s personalized natural language voice controls powered by Alexa, which has reimagined how customers experience music. When paired with Alexa, customers can ask for music by lyrics, mood, genre, era, and activities, simply by voice. Learn more about Amazon Music by visiting:

Start Times for “The U2 Experience”:

  • UK: Wednesday, 29 November 23:00
  • U.S.: Wednesday, 29 November 18:00 EST / 15:00 PST
  • Germany/Austria: Thursday, 30 November, 12:00am

From “The U2 Experience”:

Interview with Bono, 2017:

“Songs of Experience is kind of a rhyme. Your world view when you’re 17 or 18, contrasted with where you are now. I was very strict, very black and white, with the way I saw the world, whereas now I’m not. I see it in very different terms. When I was a kid – I saw the world as us and them. I think Edge was the same. But now I realize that the biggest obstacles you come up against in your life are probably not what you thought they were. It’s probably you.” – Bono

Interview with The Edge, 1987:

“‘Bullet the Blue Sky’ is a great example of why I love being in a band, as opposed to trying to be a solo artist. And it’s because, when Adam [Clayton] started playing that bass part… it is something I never, ever would have come up with in a million years. I think it is his greatest-ever bass part. He changed that piece of music, utterly, and made it what it is. The bass is of something totally different and unique.” – The Edge

Interview with Adam Clayton, 1981:

“I suspect we’ve always had this sound. We’ve always been U2. And you know, U2 is a thing that evolves constantly. And maybe a year from now, the sound will be slightly different from the sound on Boy. It’s impossible to tell because it’s a natural evolvement, all the time.”- Adam Clayton

SPAR Austria opens newly expanded and modernised academy following €10 million investment

Vienna, Austria, 2017-Nov-15 — /EPR Retail News/ — The SPAR Academy in Vienna is one of Europe’s most innovative development centres, offering training to 300 apprentices. Showing its commitment to employee development, SPAR Austria recently invested around €10 million in the expansion and modernisation of the academy.

The new facilities offer high-tech materials and new methods of training in a large area of 1,800m². Professional teachers and training experts have been employed to impart knowledge on the trainees, laying the foundation for future careers within SPAR. “Through the modernisation of the building, the SPAR Academy in Vienna has become a learning and competence centre for the training of the next SPAR generation. This is another important milestone for us at SPAR,” said SPAR Austria CEO, Fritz Poppmeier, at the re-opening of the academy.

The large auditorium is the centre piece of the new academy. It will be used as a popular meeting place and a communication and break room during school hours, but will also serve as a venue for SPAR meetings in the future. The conference rooms, with media technology and video conferencing systems, will serve not only the school’s training purposes but will also be used by employees of SPAR Austria. Another highlight of the school is the space allocated for practical work – rooms where students can complete video training and have the opportunity to taste and prepare food. “With smart boards in all six educational rooms, a digital education concept and e-mail accounts for all trainees to give them access to all learning platforms at any time, the SPAR Academy is the vocational school of the future,” concludes Robert Renz, Director of the academy.

In addition to the Viennese state curriculum, the SPAR Academy in Vienna offers numerous extra trainings such as music workshops with members of the Philharmonic Orchestra, styling workshops and training on meat and cheese products, to mention just a few. Another unique feature is the subject of cultural integration, with a strong focus placed on cross-cultural education. The goal is to provide students with a well-rounded, in-depth knowledge of the food trade through these additional training courses.

Sustainability is a top priority at the SPAR Academy in Vienna. With the training of Fairtrade ambassadors and ‘Green Champions’, apprentices are provided with everything they need to know about environmental-friendly and sustainable retailing practices. “In cooperation with WWF and the Ministry of Environment, we offer additional training in the third year, during which our apprentices are trained to become Green Champions,” explained Robert Renz. “Sustainability is not just anchored in the syllabus, it is also physically seen in our operations, for example on the roof of the school, where solar panels have been installed.”

With 2,700 trainees for 20 professions, SPAR is the largest private training organisation in Austria. The SPAR Academy in Vienna is a recognised training institution with a formal curriculum. Currently, about 300 trainees from 34 nations and ethnic groups, speaking 29 different languages and belonging to 13 religious communities, are following training at the SPAR Academy Vienna.

INTERSPAR to build the most modern shopping centre in Austria at Steyr

Austria, 2017-Oct-06 — /EPR Retail News/ — The most modern INTERSPAR shopping centre in Austria will be built in Upper Austria’s district capital Steyr. Approval for the project was given by Mayor Gerald Hackl and Managing Director INTERSPAR Austria, Markus Kaser. Throughout the full year of construction, the INTERSPAR Hypermarket will remain open.

€21.1 million for the most modern INTERSPAR shopping centre
“In just over a year, the first customers will experience a new shopping paradise here,” said Markus Kaser, Managing Director INTERSPAR Austria. The building will be completely excavated and redesigned in two construction phases. The INTERSPAR Hypermarket and the majority of the shops will stay open during the entire renovation. Only the INTERSPAR restaurant is expected to be temporarily closed from spring to autumn 2018.

“We intend to provide a friendly, bright and pleasant shopping atmosphere, a place where, in addition to delicious food, customers can also purchase everything for their daily needs,” explained Mr Kaser.  At the time of the reopening in late 2018, about 200 people will join a modern workplace in the shopping centre.

Positive impulse for the region’s economy
“The €21 million investment in the redevelopment of the INTERSPAR Hypermarket highlights the status of our city as a shopping and trading centre for the entire region. At the same time, a success story continues, which began with the opening in 1999 and continued through a broad and high-quality offer as well as the perfect customer service,”  said Mayor Gerald Hackl.

SPAR Austria highlight its CSR initiatives

SPAR Austria highlight its CSR initiatives

Austria, 2017-Jul-28 — /EPR Retail News/ — Responsible retailing and community involvement are high on SPAR Austria’s agenda and deeply rooted in its corporate culture. SPAR Austria is actively engaging in CSR initiatives at national, regional and local levels. Here we highlight some recent examples which underline the diversity of the causes being supported.

SPAR Austria and UNIQA support ‘Save the Child’ charity

In early 2017, UNIQA health insurer and SPAR launched a campaign ‘Every move counts’ promoting physical exercise by employees. Upon reaching 50,000 measured kilometres, the two partners would donate €10,000 to children in need. At the end of May 2017, employees of both organisations had already covered 52,968km across 52 different sports and burnt 3.7 million calories; quickly achieving the target. The most popular sports were running, walking and cycling.

Using this donation, Save the Child will be able to support families and children living in physically or socially difficult circumstances throughout Austria. The aid ranges from disability work, caring for socially vulnerable children, fostering through to individual support for families in need.

SPAR Upper Austria sponsors Special Olympics

SPAR Upper Austria is a premium sponsor of the 7th Austrian Special Olympics, which will be organised in Vöcklabruck in 2018, bringing together 2,500 athletes. “We aim to raise approximately €10,000 through the sale of specially branded sparkling water in all of our SPAR, EUROSPAR and INTERSPAR stores, in cooperation with the family business ‘Starzinger’. The money will be donated to the association ‘Building Bridges’ which is organising the event,” said Jakob Leitner, Managing Director of the SPAR Marchtrenk office.

In more than 300 SPAR stores and on SPAR flyers throughout Upper Austria, awareness will be created in the months leading up to the event.

Two SPAR Tyrol stores donate to local charities

As part of the opening of the new SPAR store Reinisch in Steinach am Brenner, a donation of €2,500 was presented to Georg Schärmer, Director of the charity ‘Caritas Innsbruck’. “The donated money was generated by a corporate promotion with the company Ölz”, explains Dr. Christof Rissbacher, Managing Director of SPAR Tyrol and Salzburg.  The donation supports people in need and families in the Wipptal region.

Within the corporate social responsibility programme of SPAR Austria, the donation of some funds is managed by individual stores; in this case the EUROSPAR in Kufstein Tyrol, chose the local food bank, donating €1,200 recently. Socially disadvantaged individuals and families from Kufstein and surrounding areas can purchase food at sharply reduced prices through this charity.

INTERSPAR Austria expands online food shop to Salzburg

Vienna, Austria, 2017-Mar-31 — /EPR Retail News/ — In September last year, INTERSPAR in Vienna launched the largest online food shop in Austria, offering about 20,000 products to shoppers in the city and surrounding areas. After a successful start in that region, INTERSPAR is now expanding the delivery area to Salzburg and surroundings.

Through this expansion, INTERSPAR will reach about 3 million Austrians living in over 200 communities, enjoying the ease of online food delivery. Same day delivery is possible – if an order is placed before 12:00 noon, customers can choose to collect their shopping that day from centrally located pick-up boxes at a nominal charge of €1 or have the order delivered to their homes at a cost of €4.90 same day. Shoppers spending more than €100 on a single order are not charged a delivery fee.

“Time in retail never stands still and the needs and purchasing behaviour of our customers are constantly developing. Our ambition, and at the same time our mission, is to react to these trends and to continue the development of retailing – both stationary and online. After the successful launch in Vienna, we are extending this additional sales channel to Salzburg and surrounding areas,” said CEO SPAR Austria, Gerhard Drexel.

Great results in Vienna
It was the right time to enter the online segment. “Our goal in Vienna was to gain as much experience as possible and to continue the optimisation of the entire service through customer feedback. We have achieved this goal, as the many positive customer responses about quality, freshness, choice and the trendy design of the online shop prove: Currently, our customer satisfaction rating is above 95%. With the best and most comprehensive online shop in Austria, we are ready to enter additional federal states in Austria,” said Markus Kaser, Managing Director INTERSPAR Austria.

Delivery to communities 30 kilometres from Salzburg
The new INTERSPAR online shop delivers to 40 communities in and around Salzburg, supplying the 320,000 inhabitants. Products are distributed from the INTERSPAR hypermarket in Hallein. Onsite, a 20-member team are responsible for ‘picking’ the products. Instore, the products are placed in the right cooling boxes to ensure that the lettuce stays crisp, the bread fresh and the ice cream frozen.

Easy ordering, shopped personally
The online ordering process developed by SPAR Austria is fast, intuitive and easy to use on all devices, from PC to smartphone. Customers can search for food products by keyword, filtered according to pre-defined food preferences such as organic or vegetarian, and order with just a few clicks. “For delicatessen, meat, fruit and vegetables you simply specify the desired weight. During the entire shopping process the shopping cart with selected products and the total amount is visible. The online shop offers features like shopping lists and favourites and meets the highest safety standards,” said Markus Kaser. JACK & JONES JEANS INTELLIGENCE opens its first independent retail store in Austria

BRANDE, Denmark, 2016-Oct-07 — /EPR Retail News/ — 13 October this year, JACK & JONES JEANS INTELLIGENCE opens its first independent retail store in Austria – and the customers are in for a unique experience.

Jeans are the backbone of JACK & JONES – the muscle power behind the brand. Now, to further develop their strongest asset, JACK & JONES JEANS INTELLIGENCE will open their first independent retail store. We talked to Retail Director Peter Kristiansen, who let us in on the new concept:

“When customers enter the JEANS INTELLIGENCE store, they will clearly see that it is not a JACK & JONES store. The look and feel will be significantly different as the concept revolves around jeans. This is, among other things, visualized by a large jeans wall featuring up to 20 different jeans models and all kinds of tools used for fittings and treatments for jeans; you could say that the wall will function as a huge toolbox, and the store will give you the feeling of being in a laboratory.”

Jeans will cover around 60% of the assortment in the JEANS INTELLIGENCE store. The rest of the assortment will include a couple of other JACK & JONES brands to complement the jeans concept: VINTAGE with its iconic classics and PREMIUM with its chinos and Oxford button-ups – and of course shoes and other accessories to top off the outfits.

Behind a jeans bar, the customers will find the absolute key element in the store – the ‘denim dealer’.  The denim dealer is a dedicated jeans nerd who is an expert in everything regarding jeans. All store personnel have gone through 6-8 days of hardcore denim training at Campus in Brande to obtain product knowledge and become experts in denim – denim dealers.

Peter Kristiansen elaborates: “The unique atmosphere in the store has to be created by the denim dealers, and our customers will experience excellent service. We want to be extraordinary. We want to take our customers on a denim journey through a world of Craftsmanship and Dedication in an authentic environment, and we want to inspire and educate them in how to treat and maintain their jeans the best way possible. It’s all about creating value for our customers and giving them a deep insight into the craftmanship behind a pair of jeans.”

“To sum it up, our goal is to send our customers home with more than just a pair of jeans in their bag – they should leave the JEANS INTELLIGENCE store with a story. A jeans story.”

”Our first store in Salzburg is the beginning of a new era for us – a pilot project. And of course, we dream big. We always do. We wouldn’t start up something like this if we didn’t believe in the concept, and we already see a huge interest from both the UK and Germany as well as other European markets,” Peter says, and continues:

“Now, we are searching for a talented and dedicated Chain Manager who is up for the unique chance of taking this part of the business further as an independent part of JACK & JONES. We also consider which of our existing partners should have the opportunity to join in. Last but not least, we hope to give new potential – and maybe less financially strong – partners the chance to prove themselves.”

On 13 October, the first JEANS INTELLIGENCE store will open its doors in the Europark shopping centre in Salzburg, Austria. The day before the official opening, a VIP opening will take place for invited press and bloggers.

SPAR Austria opens new state-of-the-art logistics centre in Ebergassing, Austria

The existing SPAR warehouse located in the town of St. Polten had become too small to efficiently supply the growing number of SPAR stores in Vienna. Recognizing that this would only become more difficult over time, SPAR Austria invested in a new state-of-the-art logistics centre in the area of Ebergassing (Lower Austria) in co-operation with the Austrian logistics supplier Knapp.

Vienna, Austria, 2016-Jul-15 — /EPR Retail News/ — The construction of the most modern logistics centre in Europe took two years to realize and an investment of €85 million. On 11 June 2016, the official opening of the new distribution centre was celebrated in the presence of Federal Minister Dr. Hans Jörg Schelling and 500 guests. The population of Ebergassing and surroundings will be invited to visit the centre in spring 2017, when it will be fully operational. This investment has resulted in the creation of 150 new jobs in the area.

SPAR Austria Board Member, Friedrich Poppmeier, who is in charge of logistics, explains the objectives behind the new centre: “To achieve local supply at the highest level, perfect processes have to be applied. SPAR is a leader in innovation and has always invested in new technologies in the area of logistics. Innovation supporting the security of supply and the support of our SPAR retailers in their day-to-day work is an ongoing investment within SPAR Austria. The SPAR logistics centre Ebergassing has become a model operation!”

Unique worldwide innovations
The new facility is currently one of the most innovative and sustainable logistics centres in the world. Some of the technologies which have been incorporated are being used for the first time. They were developed in co-operation with logistics supplier Knapp.

Gerald Hofer, CEO of Knapp AG, explains: “Based on SPAR’s industry knowledge and Knapp’s technology know-how, we jointly developed a completely new picking method, improving management of peaks, the reduction of investment and offering employees an ergonomic working environment. We are particularly proud of specially developed workplaces and the initial use of ‘swarm intelligence’ in the form of freely navigating shuttles. This innovation will set new standards worldwide and create jobs in Austria.”

Sustainability & Social Responsibility
Right at the start of construction in May 2015, it was clear that this logistics centre is a great example of the inclusion of many elements focused on sustainability. The centre has already been pre-certified with the ÖGNI certificate in platinum by the Austrian Society for Sustainable Real Estate (ÖGNI). The official ceremony recognizing this achievement will take place in the autumn of 2016.
