CVS Pharmacy removes parabens, phthalates and the most prevalent formaldehyde donors across beauty and personal care products

  • Parabens, phthalates and the most prevalent formaldehyde donors will be removed from extensive line of store brand beauty and personal care products
  • Company also publishes full list of restricted chemicals

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2017-Apr-20 — /EPR Retail News/ — Today (April 19, 2017) CVS Pharmacy (NYSE:CVS), America’s leading retail pharmacy, took a major step forward in advancing its efforts to address chemicals of consumer concern by announcing the removal of parabens, phthalates and the most prevalent formaldehyde donors across nearly 600 beauty and personal care products from its store brand CVS Health, Beauty 360, Essence of Beauty, and Blade product lines. The Promise Organic line of store brand products also does not contain any of these ingredients. CVS Pharmacy will stop shipping store brand products that don’t meet these standards to distribution centers by the end of 2019.

As a company driven by its purpose of helping people on their path to better health, this latest action is a significant milestone in its journey toward more sustainable products that satisfy consumer expectations. The company has also published its full list of restricted chemicals by product category here.

“We are committed to providing our customers with the safe, efficacious products that they are looking for,” said Cia Tucci, vice president of store brands and Quality Assurance at CVS Health.  “We listened when customers voiced their desire for products that still provide the benefits they need with fewer ingredients of concern. Today’s announcement is a natural step in the evolution of our comprehensive approach to chemical safety.”

While all store brand products have always been subject to stringent standards of safety, quality and environmental responsibility and – at a minimum – meet all federal and state requirements, customer feedback has driven this move to eliminate parabens, phthalates and the most prevalent formaldehyde donors.  In addition to listening to customers, CVS Health has also engaged with industry experts and key advocacy groups to ensure that product quality can be maintained through this transition. Over the past several years, CVS Health has engaged with the Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families (SCHF) coalition and its Mind the Store campaign, an organization working to reduce the use of toxic chemicals in consumer products, strengthen the understanding of chemicals of consumer concern and inform opportunities for retailers to advance chemical safety in consumer products.

“This announcement is an exciting milestone not only for CVS Health, but for retailers and the role they play in driving change toward safer consumer products,” said Mike Schade, Mind the Store campaign director for Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families. “We applaud CVS Health for the action it is taking today and we look forward to continued collaboration ahead.  We hope other retailers will follow suit.”

The evolution of CVS Health’s chemical policy builds off a foundation laid over the last decade to advance its chemical management efforts. In 2007, the company became the first major drugstore to establish a Cosmetic Safety Policy in 2008. Since then, CVS Health has made substantial progress toward sustainable chemical management, including the launch of the WERCSmart tool in 2013 to ensure suppliers register ingredient information for all chemical-based products. In 2016, CVS Health became the first major pharmacy chain in the country to become a signatory of the Chemical Footprint Project.

“Our consumers expect both transparency and quality when it comes to ingredients in the products they use,” said Eileen Howard Boone, senior vice president of CSR and philanthropy at CVS Health. “This is an important step, and we look forward to continuing to work with stakeholders to address additional chemicals of consumer concern and focus on more product categories in the future.”

Scottish online cosmetics company Beauty Counter Direct have announced an impressive 43% like-on-like increase in sales

Defying the economic downturn, Beauty Counter Direct’s December figures prove that beauty products and cosmetics are increasingly popular. The so-called, ‘lipstick effect’, first evident during the Great Depression 1929-1933 when lipstick sales rocketed 25%, should perhaps be renamed the ‘cosmetics effect’ as sales increase across the board. In the pre-Christmas period Beauty Counter Direct’s skin care product sales increased by 65%, cosmetics by 58% and fragrances were up by 17%. During the same period, mascara sales more than doubled.

Julie Wood, Managing Director of Beauty Counter Direct says: “Our sales prove that people like to keep up appearances despite the dismal outlook. Treating yourself to less expensive luxuries has never been so popular. Customers want low cost and high impact.”

Sales figures from one of the world’s biggest cosmetics companies, L’Oreal, endorse this theory. Their sales were up 5.3% in the first half of the year.

RAB Capital analyst Dhaval Joshi explains the increase: “The evidence shows that when budgets are squeezed people simply substitute large extravagances for small luxuries.” Wood backs up this comment: “Our customers are buying larger volumes of cheaper products.”

Beauty Counter Direct was started by Julie Wood in 2005 after spotting a gap in the market for direct designer selling. The company employs eight people and is hoping to increase staff levels in 2009. Their best selling item is YSL Touche Eclat (RRP £22.50), which costs £16.99. Their product range stretches from eye pencils at 50 pence to Elizabeth Arden Prevage Anti Ageing Cream (RRP £145) at £98.99. Over one hundred brands include Estee Lauder, Lancôme, Clarins, Clinique and Yves Saint Laurent. They offer discounts of up to 70% on high street prices and cater for the grooming needs of both men and women.

Beauty Counter Direct specialises in discount cosmetics, skin care products, fragrances, beauty products and accessories from a wide range of premium designer brands. They provide a new way to buy your favourite beauty products offering both great savings and greater convenience. Browse through their extensive range at your convenience. Ordering couldn’t be simpler, and with a choice of three flat rate delivery options, including guaranteed next day delivery, orders are with you in no time. The dedicated Customer Service Team can provide impartial advice and product information.

Boots Has Introduced Five New Brands To Its Online Beauty Shop – Boots Beauty Boutique

Boots.com is thrilled to announce the launch of five new brands to its Beauty Boutique, which only opened its ‘virtual doors’ in Autumn 2007, increasing its already attractive offering of niche and coveted brands.

Boots Beauty Boutique is the beautifully ‘boudoiresque’ website for all those ‘beauty addicts’ out there, giving access to an array of the most sought after, exclusive skin, body and hair care brands from all over the world that are not readily available on the high street.

Thousands of customers have already treated themselves to renowned brands such asBliss, This Works, MOP and Dr. Nick Lowe since the launch of the site in September 2007. But if that wasn’t enough, now there is even more to find in the virtual boutique, from all the far-flung corners of the world.

ZPM is to wash bags what Mulberry is to handbags. Named after the founder Zoe Phayre-Mudge, ZPM combines bright colours and fabulous fabrics to create beauty and toiletry bags that are stylish as well as practical, so owners will leave them lying around for all and sundry to see.

Other brands introduced into the range focus on the more natural side of beauty. They include well-established, famous natural brands such as Swiss brand Weleda alongside newer names in the beauty world. One of the relative newcomers in natural beauty is the Greek skin and haircare brand Korres, whose roots are firmly planted in homeopathy. As a naturals brand Korres gleans most of its ingredients from four sources – Greek flora, foodstuffs such as honey, medicinal herbs and efficacious natural ingredients such as Hibiscus and Wild Mango.

Jo Woods is famed for being a model as well as a rock star’s wife. However, a lesser known fact is that Jo has been a committed pioneer to the organic lifestyle for the past eighteen years and has now created Jo Woods Organics. It comprises two ranges of totally organic bath and body products – Jo Woods Organics Everyday Range plus a more decadent gift range.

The fifth new brand is the paraben-free toiletries range Yes to Carrots, a hair, skin and bodycare range that harnesses beta-carotene, well known for its anti-ageing and anti-oxidant properties. This is combined with minerals from Dead Sea Mud to cleanse and detoxify skin.

Celeste Sinclair, Beauty Buyer for boots.com said: “Beauty Boutique has been very successful in its first year, with many of our customers discovering smaller niche brands that previously they may not have come across. We know many of our loyal customers want to see and experiment with brands that they might not have had access to before, so we are delighted to be able to introduce these five additional brands, and can’t wait to hear what they think.”

As well as these five exciting new brands, many of the existing brands will be extending their offering on Boots Beauty Boutique, including sets of gorgeous Christmas beauty products. Bliss, Burts Bees, Caudelie, Triology and Balance Me will all be introducing innovative new products for people to check out and enjoy. So overall there will be much more for customers to get their mitts on.

Boots.com the UKs biggest health & beauty online retailer has revealed a whole new look and feel for the site

Boots.com, UK health and beauty website and the online presence of Boots UK, has undergone a complete revamp. The new site is being launched to users with Boots.com’s biggest ever Beauty Event.

The new look site for Boots boasts a host of new features and functionalities to improve the customer’s shopping experience. These include improved navigation and one page checkout, as well as a ‘wish list’ facility and product ratings and reviews.

Tim Stacey, Director of Boots.com, explained, “Boots.com was initially launched more than six years ago. In this time, e-commerce has grown beyond all expectations and technology has come on at pace. In addition, our customers have told us that they would like to see more information and advice alongside our thousands of health and beauty products.

Boots.com is seizing the opportunity to update the technology which is used on the site, whilst at the same time introducing the richer content which customers have requested, following extensive customer research.

Tim Stacey further explained, “We know our customers want a quick, simple checkout, delivery options that suit them and to feel part of a community online. This is the first stage in an exciting period of development for Boots’ online presence and we are committed to delivering customers a multi-channel shopping experience. There are many more exciting developments planned over the next few months including the launch of a ‘buy online and collect in store’ service, further developments in health advice and information, and online communities for our customers.”

Boots.com partnered with multi-channel experts utilising IBM’s WebSphere Commerce platform implemented by Steria, in partnership with Europe’s leading WSC systems integrator, Salmon. The customer-led design was managed by London based digital agency, Grand Union.

The site’s new platform will also greatly increase Boots.com’s advice and information capabilities. Boots.Com Launches A Campaign Of Unique Beauty Competitions With Priceless Prizes

Everyone loves the chance to win something for nothing and so boots.com has launched a campaign of alluring beauty competitions to celebrate its ‘Biggest Ever Beauty Event’.

Boots.com has given itself a makeover for a beautiful new look and to celebrate has launched its ‘Biggest Ever Beauty Event’. As part of this, every day for the next month, the site will feature inspirational beauty competitions including once in a lifetime prizes such as winning front row seats to a show at London Fashion Week, or receiving a make-over with ’10 Years Younger’ presenter Nicky Hambleton-Jones.

However, the beauty event itself is about much more than inspirational competitions. It includes access to beauty advice, great new looks and beauty tips from a whole host of industry experts, such as hairdresser James Brown, friend and hair stylist to Kate Moss. One of James’ top tips is: “I never spray hairspray directly onto the hair. I spray it onto the tips of my fingers and rub it into the scalp where I want to create volume – on the crown and sides. To smooth hair, spray it onto the palms of your hand, rub together and then use your hands as tools to smooth flyaways down the hair.”

The event comes at the perfect time; September sees London Fashion Week which not only showcases next season’s fashions, but also the models don make-up looks likely to dominate the industry for the seasons to come.

Amanda Howard, Head of Content for boots.com said: “We know Autumn can often be overlooked for beauty; there are obviously huge stories around getting ready for summer and by November people are starting to think about their Christmas looks. But in-between, Autumn is really important – not only do we get sneak previews of next season’s influences from Fashion Week, but the weather is changing and women can start to see it affect their hair and skin. Our customers have told us that they are desperate for advice and inspiration, so we wanted to give them exactly what they have asked for.”

This biggest ever beauty event simply heralds the changes to content that will be seen on a regular basis on the new boots.com. The new site will see the same depth of health and beauty products as ever but now sitting alongside editorial content, such as ‘how to’ demonstration videos and hints and tips that can be incorporated into everyday routines. To add even more expertise, the site now has its own Beauty editor, Katie Campbell, previously deputy beauty editor of Grazia. Katie will be writing a daily beauty blog to bring readers previews of up and coming launches, product reviews and all her inner thoughts and inspiration on all things beauty.
