UK, 2017-Oct-06 — /EPR Retail News/ — SPAR UK Partner, A.F. Blakemore & Son, has raised funds for a leading children’s charity and honoured SPAR retailers at their annual Retail Trade Show. This SPAR Partner is celebrating their 100-year anniversary this year with a diverse range of activities.

SPAR store St Fagans raises over £30,000 for the NSPCC

SPAR St. Fagans in Cardiff has raised £30,379 for the NSPCC, which is the leading children’s charity fighting to end child abuse in the UK and Channel islands. The funds were raised during a six-year partnership with the charity, through an array of fundraising events such as dress down days, raffles, book stalls and instore sale markets.

The store reached this figure after hosting a charity birthday party on 1 September in celebration of A.F. Blakemore & Son Ltd’s 100-year anniversary. The SPAR store manager, Allen Collett, said: “It is important to involve colleagues in the fundraising activities so that fundraising becomes a fun thing to do and not just another chore. After all, the better the event, the better the fun and the more money raised for the NSPCC.”

Since 2006, Blakemore Retail employees have raised more than £2.7 million for NSPCC services through fundraising activities.

SPAR Retail Show 2017: The Customer at Heart

The Customer at Heart was the key message from this year’s Blakemore Trade Partners SPAR Retail Show, which was attended by more than 1,100 guests. The  event took place at the Telford International Centre on 7 September and encompassed a Conference, Trade Show and Guild Dinner, focusing on how A F Blakemore and its retailers can best prioritise the needs of the shopper.

At the conference, representatives from A F Blakemore and SPAR retailers spoke about the importance of developing store formats to meet the needs of local shoppers, product development in the award-winning SPAR brand range and how the Blakemore Foundation can help retailers engage with their local communities. Blakemore Trade Partners Sales Director, Neil Mercer, explained: “We have always focused on a customer-first strategy, whether through store format developments, category management or marketing activities.”

SPAR Zimbabwe’s “Piggy Bank Challenge” provides support for children’s charity

Zimbabwe, 2017-Mar-06 — /EPR Retail News/ — SPAR Zimbabwe recently ran a campaign – the ‘Piggy Bank Challenge’ – aimed at educating children on the importance of saving money whilst at the same time providing financial support for children’s charity, Childline.

Running until the end of February, the campaign saw piggy banks (money boxes) on sale in SPAR stores in Zimbabwe. Parents could purchase these for their children and once the piggy banks were full, the money could be given to a child in need. In addition to this, SPAR Zimbabwe donated the purchase price of $2 to Childline, a charity that provides advice to children on a wide variety of topics by means of a 24-hour phone support service, free postal service and drop-in centres.

The campaign was announced on SPAR Zimbabwe’s social media platforms as well as via instore communications. A short video clip highlighting the ease with which children can save small amounts to create a larger sum for the future, was also created.

The campaign was so well received that due to higher than anticipated demand from shoppers, SPAR Zimbabwe had to procure a second shipment of the piggy banks.

This is just one of many charitable initiatives that SPAR undertakes at retail level. In Zimbabwe, SPAR has a busy programme of community involvement activities which was recognised last year when it won the Community Retailer of the Year Award at the Zimbabwe Confederation of Retailers’ annual awards ceremony.

Argos launches third annual Toy Exchange with children’s charity Barnardo’s

  • 92 per cent of children would give away some  presents if it meant another child would have a happier Christmas

Milton Keynes, UK, 2014-10-3— /EPR Retail News/ — Children’s Christmas wishes are evolving as today’s kids show awareness of the less fortunate and consider what they could give to a disadvantaged child, according to new research released today.

Rather than seeing other children go without toys in the festive season, the research from Argos and Barnardo’s shows that 92 per cent of children would happily give up some of their Christmas presents, if it meant a disadvantaged child could enjoy a happier Christmas.

And the spirit of Christmas continues with children also sharing their time, the new study revealing that 61 per cent of children spend time during their Christmas break supporting various causes with bake sales, sponsored silences, carol concerts and charitable donations.

And the Christmas belief of giving and receiving can start immediately for children across the UK with the launch of the third annual Argos Toy Exchange with children’s charity Barnardo’s. From today, until 25th November, Argos customers are invited to drop off once-loved toys at Argos or Barnardo’s stores in return for a £5 voucher towards the cost of new toys (minimum £35 spend), to be redeemed at Argos by 24 December. All donated toys are then sold in Barnardo’s retail outlets to raise funds for the charity.

The scheme aims to raise money for some of the UK’s most disadvantaged children and this year TV presenter and mum of two, Tess Daly has teamed up with the UK’s number one toy retailer* Argos and children’s charity, Barnardo’s, to make this year’s event the most successful yet!

Tess Daly, said: “I’m really excited to be a part of the Argos Toy Exchange this year. It’s an incredibly worthwhile cause and one which can help make Christmas that little bit more special for disadvantaged families across the UK. We want to bring the grand total from the three Toy Exchanges to £2 million, with over 1150 Argos and Barnardo’s stores throughout the country it’s so simple to just pop down to your local branch and get donating!”

And ahead of Christmas, the Toy Exchange is the perfect way to clear out those pre-loved toys and make space whilst supporting a hugely worthwhile cause.

Each year Argos’ Toy Exchange raises hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of toy donations. Over the last two years we have generated around £1.25 million worth of toys and this year we want to add to this to hit £2 million over the three years. With the money raised going to help support some of Barnardo’s vital causes such, as early year’s development or vocational skills training, we’re committed to make this the most successful year yet!”

We believe that with the support of the UK’s children and their families, we can do it!
