U.S. Craft Beer Sales Dominate the South American Market

Sao Paulo, Brasil, 2017-Oct-11 — /EPR Retail News/ — Mexico has its tequila, Cuba has rum, Brazilians drink caipirinhas and now America has craft beer.  Though the U.K. holds the most breweries per capita, the U.S. remains the largest producer of craft beer with 5,000+ breweries.  In fact, the craft beer revolution has become so strong and established in Europe and North America that the trend has begun trickling southwards and is dominating sales in places like Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, and Peru.

“Sales of craft beer in Latin America are growing at between 20% and 40% a year, depending on which country you’re in,” said Daniel Trivelli in a 2016 BBC News article.  President of Copa Cervezas de America, one of the region’s biggest craft beer contests, Trivelli said craft beer sales in Chile grew nearly 25% from the previous year, which represented only 2% of the overall beer market in 2016.

Craft beer is a trend the world over, and South America is jumping on the bandwagon as its culinary scene continues to progress at an astounding rate, its craft brewing scene is getting global recognition through its introduction of America’s most popular and beloved flavors.  Here are a few of the popular craft beers from America you can find on your next visit to Central and South America:

Chub Scotch Ale • Oskar Blues Oskar Blues Brewery • Colorado

Oskar Blues Chub Scotch Ale, which was rated amongst the top 50 beers on Ratebeer comes from a funky little brew pub in Longmont, Colorado.  The dark brown color features a beautiful Beige cream reveals notes of cocoa, coffee, dried and smoked dark fruit.  Its potent alcoholic strength of 8% balances well between its sweet and slightly bitter taste.  From the brewery that began the craft-beer-in-a-can craze, the scotch ale tastes strong with big and deliciously complex flavors.

Even More Jesus • Evil Twin Brewing • New York

A black color and a persistent foam contain an aroma espresso, chocolate, and caramel.  This complex beer produced in limited quantities features an intense flavor of chocolate, coffee, and brown sugar.  Its sweet flavor, high body, and dry coffee aftertaste are recognizable throughout all 12% of its alcohol volume making it worthy of the vote of one of the best breweries in the world.

Independence Pass Ale • Aspen Brewing Company • Aspen, Colorado

Ideal for the adventurous home cook, the Independence Pass Ale is for the friend in the group who doesn’t like IPAs but wants to look like they like IPAs.  This hoppy yet balanced, high altitude rendition of the classic India Pale Ale style won Gold Medals two years in a row at the World Beer Cup, the most prestigious beer competition in the world.  A major catalyst for Aspen Brewing Company, this high-altitude rendition of the classic IPA boasts an all-around fuller flavor and smells of strong caramelized malts when you pour the off-white, hazy and “chunky” amber body into the pint.

Funk-n-Delicious, Belgian-Style Blueberry Sour Ale • Oceanside Ale Works San Diego

Tastes as sour as blueberry jack hammer to the tongue with a hazy amber color and a thin, white, frothy head. Dedicated to using only the freshest hops and finest barleys, Oceanside Ale Works gifts to the world a series of Belgian style blonde ales spontaneously fermented with wild airborne yeast Blueberry, Peach, and Strawberry.  The Lambic/Belgian sours, aged in Johannesburg Riesling barrels with organic blueberries, gives off a mild sweet aroma and flavor of Belgian sugar, champagne, and grains.  One of the few remaining manual brew houses in the country, this 20-barrel brewery produces a hand-crafted beer with a 6% ABV you are sure to remember.  Whether you’re relaxing in luxury in Peru’s upscale Miraflores district, soaking up the arts in Sao Paulo, or experimenting with flavors in Argentina the craft beer revolution can be found nearby.

CVS Pharmacy debuts in Colorado

CVS Pharmacy debuts in Colorado

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2017-Jun-01 — /EPR Retail News/ — CVS Pharmacy, the retail division of CVS Health (NYSE: CVS), announced the grand opening of its first ever standalone store in Colorado. The new store at 16920 E. Lincoln Ave in Parker, CO, is the first of three locations to open in the Greater Denver market this year. Parker Mayor Mike Waid, Colorado State Senator Jim Smallwood and State Representative Kim Ransom joined CVS Pharmacy officials for a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the store opening.

“CVS Pharmacy is proud to be a part of the Colorado community, offering convenient access to best-in-class pharmacy services and a shopping experience truly dedicated to helping people on the path to better health,” said Hank Casillas, Senior Vice President of CVS Pharmacy Field Operations. “Because health services and pharmacy are at the heart of everything we do, we have created a shopping destination that offers the best assortment of health, beauty and wellness products and better-for-you snacks.”

Since CVS Pharmacy became the first and only retail pharmacy to remove tobacco from its shelves in 2014, the company has continued to evolve the customer’s shopping experience with a heightened focus on health and beauty. The new Parker store will feature:

  • Best in Class Pharmacy: With personalized programs, a growing network of pharmacists, and innovative digital tools and services, CVS Pharmacy is committed to driving the health and wellbeing of its patients above everything else. With CVS Pharmacy, customers can manage their health with more ease and efficiency and gain access to programs that help them start and stay on their prescriptions while reducing overall health care costs. With the CVS Pharmacy app, patients can be notified when prescriptions are ready for pick-up and order refills digitally by importing their medication history or using the “Scan to Refill” feature that simply scans the prescription’s barcode and orders a refill in one easy step. At each CVS Pharmacy location, local pharmacists are available to discuss medication dosage information and address any patient questions or concerns.
  • Better-For-You Food options: CVS Pharmacy has a carefully curated selection of national and niche better-for-you brands that make healthier eating on-the-go more convenient and affordable. With “trend zones” featuring different collections of foods customers might expect to only find at a specialty food store, such as gluten-free, allergen-free or those featuring super food ingredients, CVS Pharmacy was also recently the first national retail pharmacy chain to announce the removal of artificial trans fats from all exclusive store brand food products.
  • Elevated Beauty: CVS Pharmacy offers the latest innovations and both popular and unexpected beauty brands and products customers can trust at a great value. The company continues to expand its assortment of “on-trend” and niche beauty brands. In addition, the company recently removed all sun care products with SPF lower than 15 from its shelves while expanding products with SPF 30/broad spectrum, natural beauty brands and products focused on skin health. By the end of 2019, all parabens, phthalates and formaldehyde donors in products within the CVS Health, Beauty 360, Essence of Beauty, Promise Organic and Blade store brand product lines will be removed.
  • Enhanced assortment of health and wellness products: CVS Pharmacy is committed to enhancing the customer shopping experience in the OTC aisles by focusing on important areas of our customers’ lives, like active nutrition, immunity, pain management and sleep, offering holistic solutions and easy navigation through educational signs and displays. The company also features a broader selection of vitamins and supplements, including offerings from specialty brands typically found in specialty stores. To ensure the quality of its product offerings, CVS Pharmacy is embarking on the development of new standards for vitamins and supplements, with the goal of full implementation by 2019. The standards will require third-party testing of ingredient listings for vitamins and supplements, as well as product testing for certain ingredients of concern.
  • Customer-Driven Personalization: The ExtraCare Rewards program is the longest running retail rewards program in the drugstore space, and the program continues to evolve with more than 80 million active members in the country. Nearly 1 in 4 Americans have an ExtraCare card, and CVS Pharmacy continues to bring customers new updates and personalized features like special offers and coupons, and easy paper-free options to use rewards and discounts and get receipts. In addition to getting 2 percent back in ExtraBucks Rewards every time members use their card, customers can also opt-in to earn Beauty ExtraBucks Rewards, where they can earn $5 for every $50 spent in beauty, as well as Pharmacy & Health Rewards, which allows members to earn up to $50 each year by simply filling prescriptions at CVS Pharmacy.

While CVS Pharmacy announced the launch of 39 pharmacies within Target Stores throughout Colorado last year, the new store in Parker opening today offers the first time customers can shop in a CVS Pharmacy retail location in Colorado. Two additional Denver-area locations will open this summer at the following locations:

  • 3770 N. Sheridan Blvd., Denver
  • 9936 W. Bowles Ave, Littleton

Greater expansion across the Colorado is planned, with new CVS Pharmacy locations slated to open in Colorado Springs in 2018.

Overstock.com urges Colorado legislators to pass an anti-tattletale tax bill

Company urges legislators to avoid backlash over privacy concerns

SALT LAKE CITY, 2017-Apr-03 — /EPR Retail News/ — Overstock.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:OSTK) publicly urged Colorado legislators to pass an anti-tattletale tax bill to avoid a public outcry if online retailers are forced to report Colorado citizens’ private online transactions to the state.

“When Colorado’s legislature passed a law requiring retailers to report to the government all Coloradans’ private online transactions, we never thought we’d be staring down the barrel of imminent compliance,” said Jonathan Johnson, Overstock.com’s Chairman of the Board. “After seven years of litigation, that’s exactly where we are today.”

Colorado’s tattletale law, which goes into effect July 1, is one of many state measures designed to force or irritate out-of-state retailers to collect sales taxes on in-state transactions.  The law states that if a retailer doesn’t collect the tax, then it must report private Coloradan customer transaction data to the state, and also send a report to Colorado customers by first class mail.

Steve DelBianco, executive director of NetChoice, observed that when Colorado passed its transaction reporting measure, legislators believed that online retailers would surely collect the tax rather than turn over their sensitive customer data to the state.

However, given the high cost and risk of compliance with 12,000 inconsistent tax regulations nationwide, most retailers have no practical choice but to report transaction data as required.  For many years, Overstock has supported several bills now before the U.S. Congress that would allow states to collect sales taxes, but with a view towards easing the compliance burden of these 12,000 state taxing authorities and their varying laws and regulations.

A recent poll on Colorado law demonstrated that 78% of Coloradans believe that the tattletale law is a clear invasion of their privacy.  Few polls reflect such overwhelming opposition, and Overstock expects that unless the data reporting component is repealed, an enormous citizen backlash is imminent.  While critical of the existing law, Overstock applauded those legislators now sponsoring a bill to repeal the reporting portions of the law as well as some other unreasonable components.

“We regard Overstock’s customer transaction data as some of the most sensitive in the world,” said Johnson.  “Thus, we employ costly and highly advanced technical measures to prevent unlawful access.  But when states pass unwise bills, forcing us to turn over the very data we work hard to protect, all that goes out the window and all bets are off.”

“Given the cost constraints under which most state governments operate, we would think that Coloradans would want to question whether their data will now be safe on state servers—whether those state systems will safeguard it equally as well as it is now safeguarded by the privacy and technical standards employed in private sector,” Johnson went on to explain.

Overstock noted that if the partial repeal bill does not pass, the company will let customers know in advance that their sensitive data will be handed over to the state, and will supply legislative contact information to help customers voice their complaints to local Senators and Representatives.

“We sincerely hope that the Colorado legislature will now act in the high interests of all of its citizens and our customers and pass this important repeal measure before the mandated reporting compliance deadline,” concluded Johnson.

CVS Health announces availability of opioid overdose-reversal medication naloxone without prescription at all its Pharmacies in Colorado

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2016-Aug-19 — /EPR Retail News/ — CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) announced today that the opioid overdose-reversal medication naloxone is now available without a prescription at all CVS Pharmacy locations in Colorado. CVS Health has established a standing order with physicians in Colorado that allows CVS Pharmacy to expand access to the medication across the state.

“Naloxone is a safe and effective antidote to opioid overdoses and by expanding access to this medication in our Colorado pharmacies by the use of a physician’s standing order for patients without a prescription, we can help save lives,” said Tom Davis, RPh, Vice President of Pharmacy Professional Practices at CVS Pharmacy. “We are dedicated to helping the communities we serve address and prevent drug abuse and we are expanding access to naloxone to give more people a chance to get the help they need for recovery.”

In addition to Colorado, CVS Pharmacy locations in 30 other states are able to dispense naloxone to patients without an individual prescription.

“CVS Health has been a leader in helping communities prevent prescription drug abuse and we applaud their work to increase access to this life-saving drug for patients without a prescription at CVS Pharmacy locations in Colorado,” said Marcia Lee Taylor, President and CEO, Partnership for Drug-Free Kids. “Increasing access to naloxone is a critical public health priority that allows patients and their families to prevent opioid fatalities and recognize when people need help working towards recovery from the disease of addiction.”

CVS Health has also launched digital resources on www.cvs.com/content/prescription-drug-abuse giving patients and families a single destination to learn more about drug abuse prevention. These new resources build on CVS Health’s longstanding commitment to helping communities address and prevent drug abuse. In 2015, CVS Health launched a community outreach program called Pharmacists Teach, which brings local pharmacists to high school health classes to talk to students about the dangers of drug abuse. More than 100,000 students have already taken part in the program. High school teachers and administrators in Colorado can learn more about bringing Pharmacists Teach to their school here.

CVS Health has also joined with the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids to create the Medication Disposal for Safer Communities Program, which donates disposal units to local police departments, providing a safe and environmentally friendly way to dispose of unwanted medication. Law enforcement officials across Colorado can apply to receive a drug collection unit here.

The first CVS Pharmacy locations in Target stores in Colorado now open

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2016-Jun-23 — /EPR Retail News/ — CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) today announced that the first CVS Pharmacy locations in Target stores in Colorado are now open. The pharmacies, located in several metropolitan areas, including Denver, Colorado Springs and Fort Collins, are being operated through a store-within-a-store format and are branded CVS Pharmacy.

“We’re excited to introduce our integrated pharmacy services and health care expertise to Target guests in Colorado,” said Tony Caskey, Area Vice President for CVS Pharmacy. “Our pharmacy care offerings, along with our innovative digital tools, will offer consumers expanded wellness options and increased access to care. We look forward to welcoming Target guests as our pharmacy patients.”

With the addition of 39 rebranded CVS Pharmacy locations in Target stores, the company now has its first presence in the state and is introducing Target guests to its suite of innovative pharmacy care services.

The CVS Pharmacy in Target locations in Colorado will soon offer the complete suite of pharmacy care and medication management services available at traditional CVS Pharmacy stores, including ScriptSync and Specialty Connect. ScriptSync, enables patients and caregivers with multiple maintenance medications to pick up all of their eligible prescriptions at the same time in a monthly CVS Pharmacy visit. Specialty Connect, which gives patients the option to pick up their specialty prescriptions at any CVS Pharmacy, is also now available to patients at CVS Pharmacy in Target locations throughout Colorado. These programs are available to all patients, regardless of their health insurance carrier.

CVS Caremark plan members in Colorado will now be able to access Maintenance Choice, a program that lets CVS Caremark plan members choose to fill 90-day supplies of medications for chronic conditions either through mail service or at any CVS Pharmacy location. In addition, Pharmacy Advisor, a program in which CVS Caremark plan members diagnosed with chronic conditions receive face-to-face counseling when they choose to fill prescriptions at CVS Pharmacy or by phone when they choose mail service pharmacy, will be available by the end of 2016.

“As we roll out the new CVS Pharmacy in Target locations, we are working closely with patients to make their transition to our services and programs as simple and seamless as possible,” added Caskey.

Patients at CVS Pharmacy in Target now have access to convenient and easy-to-use digital tools, such as the CVS Pharmacy app and CVS.com, to help them manage their prescriptions and stay on track with their medications. Patients who utilize CVS Pharmacy’s digital offerings are also able to scan their pill bottles to order refills of their prescriptions and receive medication reminders while benefiting from easier in-store pickup. CVS Pharmacy’s leading ExtraCare loyalty program and the opt-in ExtraCare Pharmacy & Health Rewards will allow patients to earn $5 in ExtraBucks Rewards for every 10 prescriptions filled. Patients can also earn rewards for the other things they do to stay healthy, like getting immunizations or choosing email refill reminders.

CVS Pharmacy is committed to giving back to the communities where its colleagues live and work. The company has extended that commitment to Colorado with a$50,000 donation to Children’s Hospital Colorado. The funding will be used to support the mission of Children’s Colorado, which is devoted to the health and well-being of children, along with the hospital’s medical, research, education and advocacy programs.

“We congratulate CVS Pharmacy on its expansion into Colorado’s Target stores and are thrilled to have such a committed new community partner join us in our mission to transform child health,” said Cary Larger, senior vice president, community fundraising, Children’s Hospital Colorado Foundation.

In December 2015, CVS Health acquired all Target pharmacies and retail clinics across 47 states. All of the pharmacies and clinics have now been converted to CVS Pharmacy and MinuteClinic. In addition, a CVS Pharmacy will be included in all new Target stores that offer pharmacy services and Target clinic locations will be rebranded as MinuteClinic over the next few months. The acquisition expands CVS Health’s pharmacy footprint by approximately 20 percent and its clinic footprint by about 8 percent. CVS Health now has a presence in every state.
