CVS Health installs 14 new medication disposal units inside CVS Pharmacy locations in Rhode Island

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2018-Mar-08 — /EPR Retail News/ — CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) announced today (March 6, 2018) that the company has expanded its safe medication disposal program inside select CVS Pharmacy locations in Rhode Island to help facilitate proper and timely disposal of opioids and other medications that could be diverted or misused if left in people’s homes. Attorney General Peter Kilmartin, U.S. Attorney Stephen Dambruch, and Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves joined representatives from CVS Health at a Pawtucket CVS Pharmacy store to launch the program today.

“With a presence in nearly 10,000 communities across the country, we witness the impact of the alarming and rapidly growing epidemic of opioid addiction and misuse,” said Tom Davis, Vice President of Professional Services for CVS Pharmacy. “Expanding our safe medication disposal efforts in Rhode Island is an extension of the initiatives in place across our company to fight the opioid abuse epidemic and fulfil our purpose of helping people on their path to better health.”

The 14 new medication disposal units that will be installed inside CVS Pharmacy locations in Rhode Island will supplement an additional 14 units CVS Health has donated to police departments across the state. Nationwide, CVS Health has donated more than 850 units to local law enforcement, collecting more than 140 metric tons, or more than 300,000 pounds of unwanted medication.

Attorney General Kilmartin said, “I applaud CVS Health for recognizing that to effectively tackle and defeat the opioid epidemic in this country, all stakeholders need to work together in a coordinated effort. Expanding the company’s prescription drug disposal kiosks to stores across Rhode Island will make it easier for customers to safely dispose of expired, unused, and unwanted prescription opioids and other prescription drugs before they can be abused or diverted for illicit purposes.”

The expansion of the safe medication disposal program to 750 CVS Pharmacy locations across the U.S. was included among the enhancements to the company’s strategy to address and prevent opioid abuse announced in September 2017. As part of that effort, the company also said it would align opioid utilization management with CDC Guideline for CVS Caremark clients and members, complementing measures already in place.

This work builds on ongoing company initiatives, including the Pharmacists Teach program, which brings CVS Pharmacists to local schools to talk to teens and parents about the dangers of abusing prescription drugs. More than 300,000 teens nationally including more than 3,600 in Rhode Island have already participated in the program. CVS Health has also worked to expand access to the opioid overdose-reversal drug naloxone in 46 states, including Rhode Island.

Opioid overdose-reversal medication naloxone now available without prescription at CVS Pharmacy locations in Oklahoma

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2017-Nov-10 — /EPR Retail News/ — CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) announced today (November 9, 2017) that the opioid overdose-reversal medication naloxone is now available without an individual prescription at all of the 77 CVS Pharmacy locations in Oklahoma, including those located inside Target stores. CVS Pharmacists will be able to dispense naloxone to patients without an individual prescription under a statewide protocol giving pharmacists prescriptive authority to dispense naloxone.

“Naloxone is a safe and effective antidote to opioid overdoses and by expanding access to this medication in our pharmacies in Oklahoma we can help save lives,” said Tom Davis, RPh, Vice President of Pharmacy Professional Services at CVS Pharmacy. “CVS Health is dedicated to helping the communities we serve address and prevent prescription drug abuse and we are expanding access to naloxone to give more people a chance to get the help they need for recovery.”

“In Oklahoma, more adults die of unintentional prescription drug overdoses than in car crashes,” said Congressman Markwayne Mullin. “Now, thanks to the passage of 21st Century Cures Act and the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act, law enforcement, physicians, and prescribers have more tools than ever to fight the opioid crisis. By making this lifesaving drug readily accessible to all Oklahomans, we can reverse the effects of drug overdose and prevent drug overdose tragedies in the future. Our fight against the opioid crisis does not end here, but it’s great to see a commonsense solution that will save the lives of thousands of Oklahomans each year. Just like seatbelts have helped significantly reduce car accident deaths, so will naloxone help reduce the lives tragically lost each year to drug overdose.”

Today’s naloxone announcement builds on CVS Health’s commitment to helping communities address and prevent prescription drug abuse by focusing on prevention and safe medication disposal. In 2015, CVS Health launched a community outreach program called Pharmacists Teach, which brings CVS pharmacists to local schools to talk to students about the dangers of drug abuse. More than 300,000 students across the U.S. have already taken part in the program. High school teachers and administrators can learn more about bringing Pharmacists Teach to their school at www.CVSHealth.com.

CVS Health has also joined with the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids to create the Medication Disposal for Safer Communities Program, which has donated more than 800 units to police departments around the country, collecting more than 100 metric tons of unwanted medication. In September, CVS Health announced it would expand the program to 750 locations inside CVS Pharmacies by mid-2018, for a total of 1,550 safe medication disposal locations.

In that recent announcement, the company also said it would enhance opioid utilization management to align with the CDC Guideline for CVS Caremark PBM clients and members, complementing measures already in place. And, the CVS Health Foundation added a $2 million commitment to previous investments in mitigating prescription drug abuse with support for Community Health Centers providing medication-assisted treatment and other addiction recovery services.

With the addition of Oklahoma, CVS Pharmacy now dispenses naloxone to patients without an individual prescription in these 46 states: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

CVS Pharmacy to host its free health screening program Project Health in Houston

HOUSTON, 2017-Nov-04 — /EPR Retail News/ — In its ongoing commitment to support post-Hurricane recovery efforts in Houston, CVS Pharmacy, the retail division of CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) will be hosting Project Health, its signature free health screening program across the city to improve access to affordable health care for residents. The annual campaign, which was originally scheduled to begin in September, was postponed as the community recovered from the effects of Hurricane Harvey.

This year’s screenings will be held from Nov. 2 through Feb. 18 in select CVS Pharmacy locations across the greater Houston area and offer an array of free comprehensive health assessment screenings, including blood pressure, Body Mass Index (BMI), glucose and total cholesterol screenings, which can help detect risk for chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease.

“Even as the residents of Houston have begun to recover and rebuild their lives following Hurricane Harvey, we know the impact this type of stress can place on a person’s health and wellness,” said Jeff Schmidt, area vice president, CVS Pharmacy. “Our free health screenings can help identify health concerns or other risk factors for participants who may not have access to care otherwise, as well as provide referrals to local doctors and information on low-cost health insurance options.”

Once screened, patients have access to on-site consultations with bilingual nurse practitioners or physician assistants who will analyze results and refer patients who require additional medical care and follow up to no-cost or low-cost medical facilities nearby or to their primary care physician. The events are open to everyone and do not require an appointment.

This year, CVS Pharmacy has partnered with the YMCA in Houston to encourage their members to participate in Project Health screenings in these markets.

“Health screenings are the first step in recognizing opportunities for improving one’s health,” said Lharissa Jacobs, association director of community health for the YMCA of Greater Houston. “Screenings, like those provided at Project Health, provide people with valuable information to make important decisions in reclaiming their health for the long run, and the Y is so pleased to encourage people to live their healthiest life.”

Houston is one of 10 cities across the country where Project Health screenings are taking place this year. A total of 450 wellness events will deliver more than $5 million worth of free health services in multicultural communities with a large number of uninsured or underinsured Americans.

Since it was established in 2006, Project Health has delivered more than $117 millionin free health care services to more than 887,000 people. For a full calendar of Project Health events in Houston, visit www.cvs.com/projecthealth (in Spanish: www.cvs.com/proyectosalud).

CVS Pharmacy to participate in the first annual National Check Your Meds Day On Saturday, October 21st

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2017-Oct-18 — /EPR Retail News/ — CVS Pharmacy (NYSE: CVS) is participating in the first annual National Check Your Meds Day, a day established by Consumer Reports and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HSS). On Saturday, October 21st, consumers are encouraged to bring their prescription medications and supplements to their local CVS Pharmacy for free “brown bag” medication reviews.

During a “brown bag” review, CVS pharmacists will perform a comprehensive evaluation of all of the medications a patient is taking to help them better understand their prescription medications, determine whether any of their medications could lead to potentially harmful drug interactions, and help them determine the best time of day to take their prescribed medications to ensure greater efficacy and fewer side effects.

If a patient takes other medications, such as over-the-counter medications or prescriptions filled at other pharmacies, the patient should present a list of those medications or bring them to the pharmacy to ensure an accurate review.

According to Consumer Reports, patients are encouraged to consider a number of factors in determining whether they could benefit from a medication review, including the number of providers who prescribe medications for them, whether they take over-the-counter supplements along with prescription drugs, if they take more than one drug to treat the same condition, if they take one medication to control the side effects of another, if they have been taking certain medications for more than three months and if they struggle to pay for their medications.

“Medication reviews are an important health care service that our pharmacists provide to patients each and every day,” said Pete Simmons, R.Ph., Vice President, Pharmacy Operations for CVS Pharmacy. “During these reviews, pharmacists are able to help patients better understand their medications, clear up any confusion that may exist, as well as pinpoint opportunities for cost-savings. It’s a great opportunity for patients to take a look at all of their medications and make sure they are taking them correctly.”

CVS pharmacists are uniquely qualified to conduct medication reviews thanks to the ScriptPath Prescription Schedule, a core element of the newly launched ScriptPath prescription management system. The schedule is generated by a scientific clinical system that automatically reviews all of a patient’s current CVS Pharmacy prescription information and prescribers’ instructions, and then, using clinical data, provides a schedule of the most effective times of day to take the medications. The Prescription Schedule is available in all stores nationwide in both English and Spanish, and is available to all patients, at any time, upon request. Pharmacists will also discuss CVS Pharmacy’s ScriptSync program, which provides the added convenience of fewer pharmacy trips by coordinating prescriptions for pick-up together.

CVS Pharmacy introduces new ScriptPath Prescription Schedule for patients who manage multiple prescription medications

CVS Pharmacy introduces new ScriptPath Prescription Schedule for patients who manage multiple prescription medications

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2017-Oct-05 — /EPR Retail News/ — CVS Pharmacy, the retail division of CVS Health (NYSE: CVS), today (Oct. 4, 2017) introduced its new ScriptPath Prescription Schedule for retail pharmacy patients who manage multiple prescription medications. The ScriptPath Prescription Schedule features all of a patient’s current CVS Pharmacy prescription information in one place including which medications the patient takes, when the patient should take them, and how much of each medication should be taken in each dose. Using easy to understand icons, the new schedule was designed to improve patient understanding and enhance patient safety by simplifying how patients take medications and how caregivers give them.

“Fifty percent of patients struggle with understanding how and when to take their prescription medications, and for those with complex prescription regimens it can be even more challenging,” said Troyen Brennan, M.D., M.P.H., Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer, CVS Health. “By providing them with a clear and concise dosing schedule, which incorporates all of their current CVS Pharmacy prescriptions and reduces the number of times a patient takes medication each day, we can help improve medication adherence and, ultimately, health outcomes.”

The Prescription Schedule is the first offering in the company’s ScriptPath prescription management system. Other tools, including a new prescription vial label, are expected to roll out in early 2018. The ScriptPath Prescription Schedule is the latest in a wide array of pharmacy care tools that CVS Pharmacy is offering patients to help with medication management and improve medication adherence. The schedule is generated by a robust scientific system, created by CVS Pharmacy, that automatically reviews all of a patient’s current CVS Pharmacy prescription information and prescribers’ instructions, and then, using clinical data, provides a schedule of the most effective times of day to take the medications.

Available in English and Spanish, the ScriptPath Prescription Schedule is available at all of CVS Pharmacy’s more than 9,700 retail pharmacy locations nationwide, upon request. Because the Prescription Schedule will be most helpful to the more than nine million CVS Pharmacy patients who take more than five medications each day, those patients will be offered a consultation with the store pharmacist when they pick up their prescriptions. The pharmacist will review the Prescription Schedule and the information it provides.

“At CVS Health, we are committed to helping people on their path to better health. One of the main ways we can do that is to help our patients remain adherent to their medications,” said Kevin Hourican, Executive Vice President, Pharmacy Services, CVS Pharmacy. “Patients who take their medications as prescribed have better health outcomes than those who do not. By providing our patients with the personalized information and guidance needed to manage their medications, and most importantly, making it easier to understand and follow prescribers’ directions, we can help them remain adherent and better maintain their overall health.”

Prescription information that is highlighted on the new ScriptPath Prescription Schedule includes:

  • Personalized prescription information for the individual patient, including how much medication to take and when to take it
  • Medications separated into sections for Routine, As Needed and Other medications
  • Clear refill instructions for easy refills
  • Notes section for further personalization and to facilitate face-to-face pharmacist counseling

The ScriptPath Prescription Schedule provides a dosing schedule that maximizes the effectiveness of medications and simplifies complex medication regimens, taking into account the individual patient’s current CVS Pharmacy prescriptions.

CVS Health partnered with Deborah Adler, a designer known for her past work on Target’s ClearRx prescription packaging system, to ensure all of the elements of the new ScriptPath prescription management system were easy for patients to read and to understand. Adler, the inventor and lead designer of the new ScriptPath system, worked with the CVS Health team to develop the easy-to-understand icons and an intuitive layout for each of the ScriptPath offerings.

“I am excited to have collaborated with CVS Health on its ScriptPath prescription management system,” said Deborah Adler, Owner of Adler Design. “We are delivering a simpler, more effective way for people to take their medicine. Design matters in health care and this is a powerful example of how design can play a key role in changing behavior and improving health outcomes.”

CVS strengthens its initiatives to battle opioid abuse

  • CVS Pharmacy expanding drug disposal collection program to 1,550 units with addition of kiosks at 750 retail pharmacies nationwide, adding to 800 units previously donated to law enforcement
  • CVS Caremark enhancing opioid utilization management aligned with CDC Guideline for PBM clients and members, complementing measures already in place
  • CVS Health Foundation adding $2 million commitment to previous investments in mitigating prescription drug abuse with support for Community Health Centers providing medication-assisted treatment and other addiction recovery services

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2017-Sep-25 — /EPR Retail News/ — CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) announced today that, as part of the company’s broad commitment to fighting the national opioid abuse epidemic, it is enhancing its enterprise-wide initiatives supporting safe drug disposal, utilization management of pain medications and funding for treatment and recovery programs.

“As America’s front door to health care with a presence in nearly 10,000 communities across the country, we see firsthand the impact of the alarming and rapidly growing epidemic of opioid addiction and misuse,” said Larry J. Merlo, President and CEO, CVS Health. “Today we are announcing an expansion of our enterprise initiatives to fight the opioid abuse epidemic that leverages CVS Pharmacy’s national presence with the capabilities of CVS Caremark, which manages medications for nearly 90 million plan members.”

To support this goal, CVS Caremark will roll out an enhanced opioid utilization management approach for all commercial, health plan, employer and Medicaid clients as of February 1, 2018 unless the client chooses to opt out. This program will include limiting to seven days the supply of opioids dispensed for certain acute prescriptions for patients who are new to therapy; limiting the daily dosage of opioids dispensed based on the strength of the opioid; and requiring the use of immediate-release formulations of opioids before extended-release opioids are dispensed.

CVS Pharmacy locations will also strengthen counseling for patients filling an opioid prescription with a robust safe opioid use education program highlighting opioid safety and the dangers of addiction. This clinical program will educate patients about the Guideline for opioid prescribing published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which advises using the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration possible. Pharmacists will counsel patients about the risk of dependence and addiction tied to duration of opioid use, the importance of keeping medications secure in the home and methods of proper disposal of unused medication.

In the last two decades, opioid prescribing rates have increased nearly three-fold, from 76 million prescriptions in 1991 to approximately 207 million prescriptions in 2013. This remarkable volume of opioid prescribing is unique to the United States, where prescribing in 2015 was nearly four times what it was in Europe.

“Without a doubt, addressing our nation’s opioid crisis calls for a multipronged effort involving many health care stakeholders,” Merlo added, “from doctors, dentists and pharmaceutical companies to pharmacies and government officials. With this expansion of our industry-leading initiatives, we are further strengthening our commitment to help providers and patients balance the need for these powerful medications with the risk of abuse and misuse.”

“The misuse and abuse of opioids is a public health crisis we have to work together to solve,” said Dr. Gary Roberts, president of the American Dental Association. “As prescribers of opioid pain medications, dentists can help keep these drugs from becoming a source of harm for patients, and the American Dental Association (ADA) is absolutely committed to working with our fellow health organizations to promote the appropriate use and disposal of controlled substances. The ADA will do everything we can to help end this national emergency.”

In a commentary published today on the Health Affairs Blog, CVS Health Chief Medical Officer Troyen A. Brennan, M.D., M.P.H., wrote, “In many ways, the abuse of opiates can be seen as the leading public health emergency the United States faces today…In light of the human suffering and financial costs caused by the current epidemic, a thoughtful, responsible, evidence-based treatment of pain is a service we must provide to our patients. Employing principles sanctioned by the CDC is clearly necessary and prudent.”

In addition to limiting opioid dispensing, CVS Health today announced that it will be expanding its Medication Disposal for Safer Communities Program to a total of 1,550 kiosks, including 750 additional disposal units in CVS Pharmacy across the country beginning with locations in Florida, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and the District of Columbia this fall.

“Everyone has a role to play in addressing the opioid epidemic, and CVS Health is showing how the private sector can help,” said Richard Baum, Acting Director of National Drug Control Policy. “Making sure people can safely dispose of unwanted medications is a key part of preventing opioid misuse and abuse, and CVS Health has taken this important step which will support the health of communities across the country.”

To date, through this program, created with the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids, CVS Health has previously donated more than 800 medication disposal units to local police departments in 43 states. More than 100 metric tons of unwanted medication, that could otherwise have been diverted, misused or abused, have been collected and safely disposed of through this program in the past two years.

“CVS Health has long partnered with us to help prevent and address prescription drug abuse and we understand the depth of the company’s commitment and the breadth of their ability to respond,” said Fred Muench, PhD, President and CEO of the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids. “We strongly support their work to limit the quantity of opioids dispensed to patients, consistent with the Guideline set by the CDC, and their work to educate patients, teens and parents about the dangers of opioid misuse.”

The CVS Health Foundation has also added a $2 million commitment to its previous investments in mitigating prescription drug abuse with support for Federally-qualified community health centers to increase access to medication-assisted treatment and other recovery services. Together, the CVS Health Foundation and National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC) convened a panel of experts to develop a protocol of best practices for community health centers on provider prescribing guidelines, medication-assisted treatment, behavioral health and collaboration with other community organizations to treat and prevent prescription drug abuse among at-risk patients. These guidelines will serve as a resource for community health centers receiving grants from this partnership to provide treatment for opioid addiction. This initiative expands the CVS Health Foundation’s ongoing funding of programs to reduce prescription drug abuse.

“We are proud of our long-standing relationship with the CVS Health Foundation to help reduce health disparities among medically underserved populations,” said Tom Van Coverden, President and CEO, National Association of Community Health Centers. “Community health centers have the unique ability to leverage their care teams, health information technology systems and quality infrastructure to support drug abuse control in their communities. Through the Innovative Approaches for Prescription Drug Abuse Management and Prevention program, we hope to build capacity for providing integrated behavioral health services in communities with high incidence of substance use and abuse with the goal of implementing innovative, collaborative, and community‐based models that result in safe prescribing practices, care coordination, strengthened partnerships and non-judgmental environments for all patients.”

CVS Health is also expanding its commitment to opioid abuse prevention education by bringing its Pharmacists Teach program to a parent audience. The Pharmacists Teach program has been part of the company’s ongoing commitment to prevent and address prescription drug abuse in the communities it serves. The program connects CVS Pharmacists with schools in their communities to provide a unique perspective to students about the dangers of prescription drug abuse. To date, the program has focused on teens and has educated more than 295,000 students about prescription drug abuse.

In addition to the company’s ongoing focus on prevention, CVS Health has also worked to expand access to the opioid-overdose reversal medication naloxone in 43 states and has advocated for improving tools like Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs, which help pharmacies and prescribers prevent abuse.

CVS Pharmacy launches annual free health screening campaign — Project Health

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2017-Sep-08 — /EPR Retail News/ — In its continuing commitment to improve access to affordable health care for all Americans, CVS Pharmacy, the retail division of CVS Health (NYSE: CVS), announced the launch of Project Health, the company’s annual free health screening campaign. Over the next four months, 450 Project Health wellness events will deliver more than $5 million worth of free health services in select CVS Pharmacy locations across 10 multicultural communities with a large number of uninsured or underinsured Americans.

“Project Health is part of CVS Health’s commitment to improve access to health care and ensure that cost isn’t a barrier to important preventive services,” said Troyen A. Brennan, M.D., chief medical officer of CVS Health. “Our free health screenings can help identify health concerns or risk factors for participants who may not have access to care otherwise.”

Project Health events, which are held from September 7 through December 17, are open to everyone and do not require an appointment. Current CVS Pharmacy locations for the events include: Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, Detroit, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., and select CVS Pharmacy stores in Puerto Rico.

Given the catastrophic flooding and ongoing recovery efforts in Houston, all Project Health events in the area are being postponed. CVS Health is committed to rescheduling these free health and wellness events to the residents of Houston when it is safe to do so and when the community will have greater access to these much needed services.

Project Health offers an array of free comprehensive health assessment screenings, including blood pressure, Body Mass Index (BMI), glucose and total cholesterol screenings, which can help detect risk for chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. Today, 1 in 2 Americans has at least one chronic illness with 85 percent of our health care dollars spent each year caring for Americans with these diseases.1

“These chronic conditions, which can often be life-threatening, can be treated very effectively when identified early, helping to improve a patient’s health and well-being, as well as reducing costs for both the patient and the overall health care delivery system,” added Brennan.

Once screened, patients have access to on-site consultations with bilingual nurse practitioners or physician assistants who will analyze results and refer patients who require additional medical care and follow up to no-cost or low-cost medical facilities nearby or to their primary care physician.

Since it was established in 2006, Project Health has delivered more than $117 millionin free health care services to more than 887,000 people, many of whom lack access to preventive care. Last year, high rates of specific treatable conditions among Project Health participants were detected, including:

  • 49 percent were found to be overweight or obese
  • 39 percent had abnormal blood pressure readings
  • 31 percent had abnormal glucose readings
  • 38 percent were found to have abnormal cholesterol levels

CVS Health will be partnering with YMCAs in HoustonAtlanta and Los Angeles this year to encourage their members to participate in Project Health screenings in these markets.

“As a leading community-based organization dedicated to improving the nation’s health, the Y shares CVS Health’s goal to deliver preventive care, like screenings, in places where access is a barrier,” said Kevin Washington, President and CEO, YMCA of the USA. “Taking health care out of clinical settings and putting it into our neighborhoods can save lives, reduce costs and make our communities stronger.”

Project Health events will be held from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at select CVS Pharmacy locations. For a full calendar of Project Health events, visit www.cvs.com/projecthealth (in Spanish: www.cvs.com/proyectosalud).

By achieving this status, CVS Pharmacy has demonstrated a comprehensive commitment to quality care, improved processes and better patient outcomes. All CVS Pharmacy, Longs Drugs and Navarro Discount Pharmacy locations nationwide have earned this accreditation.

To achieve this reaccreditation, CVS Pharmacy underwent a rigorous evaluation process to validate the quality of the care and services it provides to its patients, including patient-centered medication management, wellness services, and preventive and chronic disease management.

CVS Pharmacy implements time delay safes to help prevent robbery incidents and combat the ongoing opioid epidemic

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2017-Jun-08 — /EPR Retail News/ — CVS Pharmacy announced today (June 7, 2017) that it has implemented the use of time delay safes in more than 170 locations in the Cincinnati, Columbus and Dayton markets as well as nearby locations in central and southern Ohio and northern Kentucky. This step will help prevent pharmacy robbery incidents and combat the ongoing opioid epidemic by keeping controlled substance narcotic medications from being misused or abused. Controlled substance narcotic medications that are sought after by robbers, such as oxycodone and hydrocodone, will now be stored in time delay safes in every CVS Pharmacy location in these three markets.

Time delay safes help deter pharmacy robberies by electronically delaying the time it takes for pharmacy employees to be able to open the safe. Employees must enter a code to open the safe, which automatically triggers a wait time before the safe is electronically unlocked.

The time delay function cannot be overridden and is designed to serve as a deterrent to would-be pharmacy robbers whose goal is to enter and exit their robbery targets as quickly as possible. All CVS Pharmacy locations with time delay safes are displaying highly-visible signage to inform the public that time delay safes are in use to prevent on-demand access to controlled substance narcotics.

“Pharmacy robberies are a challenging issue for every pharmacy and we are committed to doing all we can to reduce the number of pharmacy robbery incidents in the Columbus, Cincinnati and Dayton markets,” said Alisa Ulrey, Area Vice President of CVS Pharmacy in Ohio. “We believe that time delay safes, combined with other security policies and procedures in place at our stores, will help drastically reduce these incidents and ensure that our stores remain a safe environment for shopping and filling prescriptions.”

Montgomery County Sheriff Phil Plummer said, “Drug Abuse continues to be a substantial health and safety risk in Montgomery County. With overdose deaths in Montgomery County being at an historical high, I believe any efforts to control substance narcotic medications that are sought after by robbers, such as oxycodone & hydrocodone, is welcome. I applaud CVS Pharmacy for taking this proactive step to combat the opioid epidemic in Montgomery County and across Ohio.”

CVS Health’s commitment to preventing and addressing prescription drug abuse extends to community education, efforts to encourage safe disposal of unused medication and increasing access to the opioid overdose-reversal drug naloxone. The company’s Pharmacists Teach program brings CVS Pharmacists to schools across the country to talk to students about the dangers of prescription drug abuse. More than 250,000 students across the country, including more than 10,000 in Ohio, have participated in the program.

CVS Health has also joined with the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids to create the Medication Disposal for Safer Communities Program, which donates disposal units to local police departments, providing a safe and environmentally friendly way to dispose of unwanted medication. This program has collected more than 80 metric tons, or 175,000 pounds of unused prescriptions, keeping them out of medicine cabinets where they could be misused.

Additionally, CVS Health has worked with 41 states including Ohio and Kentucky to increase access to the opioid overdose-reversal drug naloxone, also known as Narcan. Patients can obtain this life-saving medication, which is a safe and effective antidote to opioid overdoses, without an individual prescription in these states.

With CVS Pharmacy, customers can manage their health with more ease and efficiency and gain access to programs that help them start and stay on their prescriptions while reducing overall health care costs. With the CVS Pharmacy app, patients can be notified when prescriptions are ready for pick-up and order refills digitally by importing their medication history or using the “Scan to Refill” feature that simply scans the prescription’s barcode and orders a refill in one easy step. At each CVS Pharmacy location, local pharmacists are available to discuss medication dosage information and address any patient questions or concerns.
  • Better-For-You Food options: CVS Pharmacy has a carefully curated selection of national and niche better-for-you brands that make healthier eating on-the-go more convenient and affordable. With “trend zones” featuring different collections of foods customers might expect to only find at a specialty food store, such as gluten-free, allergen-free or those featuring super food ingredients, CVS Pharmacy was also recently the first national retail pharmacy chain to announce the removal of artificial trans fats from all exclusive store brand food products.
  • Elevated Beauty: CVS Pharmacy offers the latest innovations and both popular and unexpected beauty brands and products customers can trust at a great value. The company continues to expand its assortment of “on-trend” and niche beauty brands. In addition, the company recently removed all sun care products with SPF lower than 15 from its shelves while expanding products with SPF 30/broad spectrum, natural beauty brands and products focused on skin health. By the end of 2019, all parabens, phthalates and formaldehyde donors in products within the CVS Health, Beauty 360, Essence of Beauty, Promise Organic and Blade store brand product lines will be removed.
  • Enhanced assortment of health and wellness products: CVS Pharmacy is committed to enhancing the customer shopping experience in the OTC aisles by focusing on important areas of our customers’ lives, like active nutrition, immunity, pain management and sleep, offering holistic solutions and easy navigation through educational signs and displays. The company also features a broader selection of vitamins and supplements, including offerings from specialty brands typically found in specialty stores. To ensure the quality of its product offerings, CVS Pharmacy is embarking on the development of new standards for vitamins and supplements, with the goal of full implementation by 2019. The standards will require third-party testing of ingredient listings for vitamins and supplements, as well as product testing for certain ingredients of concern.
  • Customer-Driven Personalization: The ExtraCare Rewards program is the longest running retail rewards program in the drugstore space, and the program continues to evolve with more than 80 million active members in the country. Nearly 1 in 4 Americans have an ExtraCare card, and CVS Pharmacy continues to bring customers new updates and personalized features like special offers and coupons, and easy paper-free options to use rewards and discounts and get receipts. In addition to getting 2 percent back in ExtraBucks Rewards every time members use their card, customers can also opt-in to earn Beauty ExtraBucks Rewards, where they can earn $5 for every $50 spent in beauty, as well as Pharmacy & Health Rewards, which allows members to earn up to $50 each year by simply filling prescriptions at CVS Pharmacy.

While CVS Pharmacy announced the launch of 39 pharmacies within Target Stores throughout Colorado last year, the new store in Parker opening today offers the first time customers can shop in a CVS Pharmacy retail location in Colorado. Two additional Denver-area locations will open this summer at the following locations:

  • 3770 N. Sheridan Blvd., Denver
  • 9936 W. Bowles Ave, Littleton

Greater expansion across the Colorado is planned, with new CVS Pharmacy locations slated to open in Colorado Springs in 2018.

Opioid overdose-reversal medicine naloxone now available without prescription at all CVS Pharmacy locations in Arizona

PHOENIX, 2017-May-24 — /EPR Retail News/ — Attorney General Mark Brnovich and State Representative Heather Carter joined CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) today (May 23, 2017) in announcing an important step to increase access to the opioid overdose-reversal medicine naloxone by making it available without a prescription at all CVS Pharmacy locations in Arizona. Pharmacists in Arizona will use prescriptive authority to dispense the life-saving medication to patients without the need for a physician visit to obtain an individual prescription. Prevention advocate Cindy Sierzchula and President of the Professional Firefighters of Arizona Bryan Jeffries expressed support for increased access to naloxone from the parent and first responder communities.

“Naloxone is a safe and effective antidote to opioid overdoses and by expanding access to this medication in our Arizona pharmacies, we can help save lives,” said Robert Marshall, Regional Manager for CVS Pharmacy in Arizona. “CVS Health is dedicated to addressing and preventing prescription drug abuse in the communities we serve and we believe the step we are announcing today will give more people a chance to get the help they need for recovery.”

“The opioid epidemic is an urgent public health crisis facing Arizona and the entire country,” said Attorney General Mark Brnovich. “We want to ensure that Arizona families who have loved ones struggling with addiction have access to Naloxone because it saves lives.”

“As a lawmaker, it’s always rewarding to see the policy decisions we make put into practice,” said Representative Heather Carter. “The main purpose behind the legislation I sponsored was to get this medication in the hands of a person who may have an opportunity to save a life. I’m here today to recognize a critical step toward achieving this goal.”

Today’s naloxone announcement builds on CVS Health’s longstanding commitment to helping communities address and prevent drug abuse. In 2015, CVS Health launched a community outreach program called Pharmacists Teach, which brings CVS pharmacists to local schools to talk to students about the dangers of drug abuse. More than 250,000 students across the U.S. have already taken part in the program, including nearly 8,000 students in Arizona. High school teachers and administrators can learn more about bringing Pharmacists Teach to their school at www.CVSHealth.com.

CVS Health has also joined with the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids to create the Medication Disposal for Safer Communities Program, which donates disposal units to local police departments, providing a safe and environmentally friendly way to dispose of unwanted medication. Police departments in Arizona can apply to receive a drug collection unit at www.cvs.com/safercommunities. Additionally, CVS Health has launched digital resources on its website CVS.com that give patients and families a single destination to learn more about drug abuse prevention.

With the addition of Arizona, CVS Pharmacy now dispenses naloxone to patients without an individual prescription in these 41 states: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

CVS Pharmacy launches new campaign to increase awareness on skin health, sun safety and the importance of proper skincare

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2017-May-16 — /EPR Retail News/ — Launching this month from CVS Pharmacy, the retail division of CVS Health (NYSE: CVS), is the new multi-platform Long Live Skin campaign aimed at increasing awareness around skin health, sun safety and the importance of proper skincare.

The Long Live Skin Campaign kicks off today (May 15, 2017) on https://www.cvs.com/longliveskin and on CVS Pharmacy social handles with a video where women share “advice to their younger self.” The women offered their guidance on a variety of life topics including love, loss, courage, and embracing both inner and outer beauty. The campaign was designed to inspire advice sharing across generations of women and will also include shorter videos that focus on skincare and beauty routines. Women are invited to join the conversation with @CVSPharmacy by using the #AdviceToMyYoungerSelf hashtag on Instagram and Twitter.

The Long Live Skin campaign will start by focusing on proper sun safety during May, which is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. The campaign will continue throughout the summer and will include in-store signage with information and tips on sun protection and skincare, additional videos with skincare advice shared via social, digital and radio, as well as special weekly ExtraCare offers on skincare, sun care and more.

“We are proud to launch the Long Live Skin campaign to educate and engage consumers around skincare, and this program is a natural extension of CVS Pharmacy’s ongoing efforts to help customers on their path to better health,” said Judy Sansone, Senior Vice President of Front Store Business & Chief Merchant at CVS Pharmacy. “Taking good care of your skin is part of taking care of your health, so we’re making it easier than ever for our shoppers to access the information and products they need, including those with greater skin health benefits.”

In addition, CVS Pharmacy and Johnson & Johnson have partnered with the American Cancer Society to create exclusive content for in store signage, cvs.com and the CVS Pharmacy circular. CVS Pharmacy Beauty Consultants will share the information and tips on the importance of proper sun care and skin health with customers. Johnson & Johnson will donate $1 for every Neutrogena or Aveeno product with SPF 15 or higher purchased from June 18-24 to the American Cancer Society to help prevent skin cancer.

“We applaud CVS Pharmacy for working on a campaign to educate and empower consumers to be more proactive regarding skin health,” said Dr. Richard Wender, American Cancer Society Chief Cancer Control Officer. “We are thrilled to participate in this partnership that focuses on skin cancer prevention and early detection to help ensure a healthy and safe summer for everyone.”

The Long Live Skin campaign is also supported by other initiatives focused on healthy skincare and the importance of sun protection:

  • CVS Pharmacy is the only national retailer to remove all sun care products with SPF lower than 15 from shelves, and has added more than 30 new SPF+/broad spectrum products that either meet or exceed FDA standards.
  • By the end of 2019, all parabens, phthalates and formaldehyde donors in beauty and personal care products within the CVS Health, Beauty 360, Essence of Beauty, Promise Organic and Blade store brand product lines will be removed.
  • 70% of CVS Pharmacy pharmacists address patient questions related to skin concerns each day. In response, CVS Pharmacy is launching a new Skin Solution section in the pharmacy checkout in 4,000+ stores on June 25 with education and dermatologist-recommended products for top chronic/episodic skin conditions like acne, rosacea, scarring, rashes, sunburn and more.
  • New brands with greater skin health benefits are launching throughout 2017, from preventative and proactive skincare with increased SPF, to more dermatological-approved options as well as additional natural and organic products.

CVS Pharmacy removes parabens, phthalates and the most prevalent formaldehyde donors across beauty and personal care products

  • Parabens, phthalates and the most prevalent formaldehyde donors will be removed from extensive line of store brand beauty and personal care products
  • Company also publishes full list of restricted chemicals

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2017-Apr-20 — /EPR Retail News/ — Today (April 19, 2017) CVS Pharmacy (NYSE:CVS), America’s leading retail pharmacy, took a major step forward in advancing its efforts to address chemicals of consumer concern by announcing the removal of parabens, phthalates and the most prevalent formaldehyde donors across nearly 600 beauty and personal care products from its store brand CVS Health, Beauty 360, Essence of Beauty, and Blade product lines. The Promise Organic line of store brand products also does not contain any of these ingredients. CVS Pharmacy will stop shipping store brand products that don’t meet these standards to distribution centers by the end of 2019.

As a company driven by its purpose of helping people on their path to better health, this latest action is a significant milestone in its journey toward more sustainable products that satisfy consumer expectations. The company has also published its full list of restricted chemicals by product category here.

“We are committed to providing our customers with the safe, efficacious products that they are looking for,” said Cia Tucci, vice president of store brands and Quality Assurance at CVS Health.  “We listened when customers voiced their desire for products that still provide the benefits they need with fewer ingredients of concern. Today’s announcement is a natural step in the evolution of our comprehensive approach to chemical safety.”

While all store brand products have always been subject to stringent standards of safety, quality and environmental responsibility and – at a minimum – meet all federal and state requirements, customer feedback has driven this move to eliminate parabens, phthalates and the most prevalent formaldehyde donors.  In addition to listening to customers, CVS Health has also engaged with industry experts and key advocacy groups to ensure that product quality can be maintained through this transition. Over the past several years, CVS Health has engaged with the Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families (SCHF) coalition and its Mind the Store campaign, an organization working to reduce the use of toxic chemicals in consumer products, strengthen the understanding of chemicals of consumer concern and inform opportunities for retailers to advance chemical safety in consumer products.

“This announcement is an exciting milestone not only for CVS Health, but for retailers and the role they play in driving change toward safer consumer products,” said Mike Schade, Mind the Store campaign director for Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families. “We applaud CVS Health for the action it is taking today and we look forward to continued collaboration ahead.  We hope other retailers will follow suit.”

The evolution of CVS Health’s chemical policy builds off a foundation laid over the last decade to advance its chemical management efforts. In 2007, the company became the first major drugstore to establish a Cosmetic Safety Policy in 2008. Since then, CVS Health has made substantial progress toward sustainable chemical management, including the launch of the WERCSmart tool in 2013 to ensure suppliers register ingredient information for all chemical-based products. In 2016, CVS Health became the first major pharmacy chain in the country to become a signatory of the Chemical Footprint Project.

“Our consumers expect both transparency and quality when it comes to ingredients in the products they use,” said Eileen Howard Boone, senior vice president of CSR and philanthropy at CVS Health. “This is an important step, and we look forward to continuing to work with stakeholders to address additional chemicals of consumer concern and focus on more product categories in the future.”

CVS Health to make naloxone available in CVS Pharmacy locations in Arizona, Georgia, Iowa and South Carolina

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2017-Mar-10 — /EPR Retail News/ — CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) announced today that CVS Pharmacy locations in four additional states will dispense the opioid overdose reversal drug naloxone to patients without an individual prescription. With the addition of CVS Pharmacy locations in Arizona, Georgia, Iowa and South Carolina, CVS Pharmacy locations in 41 states are now able to increase access to the life-saving medication. Georgia, Iowa and South Carolina all allow pharmacists to dispense naloxone under a standing order from a physician. Arizona regulations give pharmacists prescriptive authority to dispense the medication.

“CVS Health is committed to addressing and preventing opioid abuse in the communities we serve and increasing access to this life-saving medication is an important part of that commitment,” said Tom Davis, RPh, Vice President of Pharmacy Professional Practices at CVS Pharmacy. “Naloxone is a safe and effective antidote to opioid overdose and by expanding availability of this medication, we can save lives and give more people a chance to get the help they need for recovery.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), opioids including prescription opioids and heroin killed more than 33,000 people in 2015, more than any year on record. At the same time, a recent CVS Health/Morning Consult survey indicates there is a significant need for increased awareness about the availability of naloxone and its role in reversing potentially fatal opioid overdoses. Less than half (46%) of those surveyed said that they had heard of the drug, and awareness varied significantly by geographic region. In the western and southern parts of the country 38 percent and 40 percent of respondents, respectively, had heard of naloxone compared to 50 percent in the Midwest and 63 percent in the Northeast.

“Overuse and abuse of opioids is a public health epidemic,” said Georges C. Benjamin, MD, executive director of the American Public Health Association. “Making naloxone more widely available and accessible is a critical component of a broader strategy to prevent overdose deaths. I applaud CVS Health for its leadership.”

CVS Health’s work to expand access to naloxone builds on the company’s longstanding commitment to preventing prescription drug abuse. The company’s efforts to educate patients extend from resources on CVS.com to educating youth in the community. The company’s Pharmacists Teach program, which connects CVS pharmacists to local high school students, has reached more than 200,000 students across the country with a drug abuse prevention message. The company has also worked to encourage proper disposal of medications to prevent misuse or abuse. Through its Medication Disposal for Safer Communities program, CVS Health has donated more than 600 disposal units to local police departments, which have collected more than 70 metric tons of unwanted medication.

With the addition of these four states, CVS Pharmacy now dispenses naloxone to patients without an individual prescription in these 41 states: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

CVS Pharmacy continues to evolve into a premier health destination with the removal of partially hydrogenated oils from all exclusive store brands food products

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2017-Feb-23 — /EPR Retail News/ — CVS Pharmacy is the first national retail pharmacy chain to announce the removal of partially hydrogenated oils (PHO), the primary source of artificial trans fats in processed foods, from all its exclusive store brands food products. The retailer now offers over 600 exclusive snack and grocery options which are free from artificial trans fats. This comes a year and a half ahead of the Food and Drug Administration’s deadline of June 2018 for processed foods to be reformulated without artificial trans fats, underscoring the company’s ongoing commitment to customers’ health. Linked to rising rates of heart disease in the U.S., the removal of artificial trans fats in processed foods is expected to aid in reducing coronary heart disease and help prevent thousands of fatal heart attacks every year. With its purpose of helping people on their path to better health, CVS Pharmacy continues to ensure its own store brands demonstrate quality and innovation that match or exceed industry standards, while offering the best possible value.

“We applaud CVS Pharmacy for working proactively to remove artificial trans fats from its store brands products well in advance of the federal deadline,” said Dr. Eduardo Sanchez, Chief Medical Officer for Prevention at the American Heart Association. “The early removal of trans fats in all CVS Pharmacy store brands products will help to improve overall heart health and prevent heart disease for many Americans.”

Effective since the start of January, all snack and grocery store brands products developed by CVS Pharmacy and shipping to distribution centers are free from artificial trans fats. The early removal of artificial trans fats from all store brands products follows a significant expansion of healthy foods to stores nationwide throughout 2016. This initiative is a critical step as the company continues to evolve into a premier health destination, providing millions of customers healthier food options that are convenient, affordable and innovative. Other initiatives include:

  • The nationwide roll-out of the exclusive store brand CVS Health, a flagship line of more than 2,500 health and wellness products focused on effective and affordable care as well as unexpected innovations spanning 19 categories.
  • Moving healthy foods towards the front of stores.
  • Dedicating roughly 25 percent of front checkout space to better-for-you snacks.
  • Introducing healthy eating trend zones that showcase carefully curated selections of paleo, raw and vegan snacks at key periods throughout the year.
  • The “Fit Choices” shelf tagging program, helping customers easily find healthier items in stores by clearly identifying products that fit nutritional and dietary preferences including heart healthy, good source of protein, gluten free, sugar free, organic and non-GMO project verified.

CVS Pharmacy is also committed to expanding its exclusive Gold Emblem abound snack and grocery line to provide customers with additional wholesome, great-tasting products that are free from artificial preservatives and flavors. The line offers a variety of products that are gluten-free, USDA organic, non-GMO project verified, heart healthy, low sodium, high in protein, a good source of fiber or sugar-free.

CVS Pharmacy announces availability of flu shots at its locations across Washington

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2017-Jan-10 — /EPR Retail News/ — As the number of cases of the flu continues to rise in Washington, CVS Pharmacy is encouraging residents to get their flu shots. Naloxone opioid overdose-reversal drug now available without prescription at all CVS Pharmacy locations in Nevada

WOONSOCKET, R.I., , 2016-Dec-19 — /EPR Retail News/ — CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) announced today (December 14, 2016) that the opioid overdose-reversal medication naloxone is now available without a prescription at all CVS Pharmacy locations in Nevada. CVS Health has established a standing order with physicians in Nevada that allows CVS Pharmacy to expand access to the medication across the state.

“Naloxone is a safe and effective antidote to opioid overdoses and by expanding access to this medication in our Nevada pharmacies by the use of a physician’s standing order for patients without a prescription, we can help save lives,” said Tom Davis, RPh, Vice President of Pharmacy Professional Practices at CVS Pharmacy. “We are dedicated to helping the communities we serve address and prevent drug abuse and we are expanding access to naloxone to give more people a chance to get the help they need for recovery.”

The move to expand access to naloxone builds on CVS Health’s longstanding commitment to help communities address and prevent drug abuse through education, outreach and safe medication disposal. CVS Health’s commitment to drug abuse prevention education extends from online resources for patients visiting CVS.com to a commitment to youth prevention programs. Launched in 2015, CVS Health’s Pharmacists Teach program gives its pharmacists the opportunity to volunteer to speak to local students about the dangers of drug abuse. More than 150,000 students have already been part of the program. The CVS Health Foundation is also working with DoSomething.org to create a peer-to-peer prevention and intervention program delivered to young people via text message and online.

CVS Health has also joined with the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids to create the Medication Disposal for Safer Communities Program, which has donated more than 600 drug disposal units to police departments around the country. The program gives members of the community a safe and environmentally friendly way to dispose of unwanted medication and has already collected more than 47 metric tons of prescription drugs.

“CVS Health has been a leader in the work of helping communities prevent prescription drug abuse,” said Marcia Lee Taylor, President and CEO, Partnership for Drug-Free Kids. “In addition to proper disposal of unwanted medication, increasing access to naloxone is a critical public health priority that allows patients and their families to prevent opioid fatalities and recognize when people need help working towards recovery from the disease of addiction.”

With the addition of Nevada, CVS Pharmacy now dispenses naloxone in a total of 37 states: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

CVS Pharmacy to build new distribution center at the Skyport Industrial Park in Kansas City, Mo

America’s leading retail pharmacy plans to open 762,000 sq. ft. center in 2018

KANSAS CITY, Mo, 2016-Dec-19 — /EPR Retail News/ — Gov. Jay Nixon today (December 14, 2016) announced that major retailor CVS Pharmacy will build a new 762,000 sq. ft. distribution center in Kansas City, Mo, at the Skyport Industrial Park. The company’s expansion is expected to create more than 360 new jobs in the region.

“Missouri recently reached record employment, with more folks back at work in our state than ever before,” Gov. Nixon said. “Today’s announcement by CVS Pharmacy to create 360 new jobs in Kansas City will continue this momentum, and is great news for area families. Once again, Missouri has shown the nation that we are open for business with a strong and growing economy.”

With access to key road systems in the region, the planned distribution center will support the service and fulfillment needs of more than 370 CVS Pharmacy stores throughout the Midwest. CVS Pharmacy expects to break ground on the 71-acre property in January 2017 and immediately start construction on the facility. The new distribution center is expected to begin operations in 2018.

“This new distribution center is an integral part of CVS Pharmacy’s continued growth as a leading pharmacy, health and beauty destination,” said Kevin Hourican, Executive Vice President, Pharmacy Services & Supply Chain, CVS Health. “The key combination of a high-quality workforce and a centralized location will allow us to better serve the growing needs of our customers throughout the Midwest and beyond.  As a result of our new Midwest distribution center, our delivery drivers will drive hundreds of thousands fewer miles each year to deliver product to our stores, significantly reducing carbon emissions and improving highway safety.”

The new distribution center is expected to add more than 360 new jobs to the Kansas City area, as well as an additional 70 to 100 jobs that will be outsourced to local businesses.  It adds to CVS Pharmacy’s network of 18 distribution centers nationwide.

“CVS’ decision to locate this regional distribution center in Kansas City affirms the transportation infrastructure advantages of this region and the competitive costs for distributing to the greater Midwest from here,” said Chris Gutierrez, President, KC SmartPort, the authority on logistics and opportunities in the 18-county, bi-state Kansas City region.

“On behalf of CVS Pharmacy, we are thrilled to grow our presence in the Kansas City business community. This new location will help us enhance support for our expanding distribution needs in the Midwestern market,” said Ron Link, Senior Vice President of Logistics at CVS Pharmacy.  “We want to thank state and local officials for their cooperation and support during our site selection process.”

“Kansas City is experiencing a large industrial boom and continues to be center of choice for regional and national distribution due to our region’s abundant multi-modal transportation network,” said Kansas City Area Development Council President and CEO Tim Cowden. “We are pleased that CVS Pharmacy chose the KC region and look forward to its future success.”

Missouri is helping the company recruit candidates for the new positions which are expected to be hired starting in early 2018. Additionally, Kansas City approved the company for local personal property tax abatement. The Missouri Partnership also assisted with the company’s expansion to the state.

CVS Pharmacy reminds customers to protect themselves from flu in support of National Influenza Vaccination Week

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2016-Dec-07 — /EPR Retail News/ — During National Influenza Vaccination Week (Dec. 4-10), CVS Pharmacy is reminding families nationwide that it’s not too late to receive a flu shot to protect themselves from the flu. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) established National Influenza Vaccination Week in 2005 to emphasize the importance of getting vaccinated as the holiday season begins and even into the new year, since a flu shot is the best way to prevent the flu.

A recent survey released by CVS Health found that nearly two in five Americans make multiple trips to get their entire household vaccinated, pointing to a lack of convenience as a real hurdle for families looking to get the flu shot. With CVS Pharmacy’s more than 9,600 retail pharmacies and 1,100 walk-in MinuteClinics to choose from, getting the whole family vaccinated this flu season has never been more convenient.

“National Influenza Vaccination Week is a great reminder that the flu virus doesn’t take the holidays off and families should make sure they’re protected by getting vaccinated,” said Papatya Tankut, R.Ph., Vice President of Pharmacy Affairs at CVS Health. “CVS Pharmacy understands that families’ schedules are packed with holiday to-dos this time of year, and that’s why we make getting the flu shot convenient.”

The survey also revealed that two in three (64 percent) employed Americans would still go to work even if they were feeling ill with flu-like symptoms.

“With many people choosing to go to work even when they’re experiencing flu-like symptoms, it’s vital to take all precautions necessary to avoid getting sick,” said Angela Patterson, DNP, FNP-BC, NEA-BC, Chief Nurse Practitioner Officer at MinuteClinic. “Getting a flu shot is the most effective way to protect yourself and your loved ones from the flu and the potentially serious effects of influenza infection.”

The flu virus changes year over year, which is why the CDC recommends an annual flu shot for everyone six months and older. According to the CDC, seasonal flu activity can begin as early as October and continue as late as May, which means it is not too late to get a flu shot. In addition, if you haven’t yet been vaccinated and have already gotten sick with a flu virus this season, a flu vaccine can still protect you from other strains of the flu, further stressing the importance of getting vaccinated.

CVS Pharmacy and MinuteClinic are dedicated to making the vaccination process as convenient as possible; flu shots are available seven days a week, including evenings and weekends at locations nationwide with no appointment needed. For added convenience, CVS Pharmacy customers can schedule their flu shot in advance using the Immunization Scheduler at CVS.com. Patients planning to go to MinuteClinic to get their flu shot can visit MinuteClinic.com to view wait times and hold their place in line at their chosen clinic.

The flu vaccine is considered a preventive service under the Affordable Care Act, and is fully covered and available at no cost through most insurance plans. In addition, customers will receive a 20 percent off CVS Pharmacy Shopping Pass when they get a flu shot at CVS Pharmacy or MinuteClinic.[1] Patients who receive a flu shot at CVS Pharmacy or MinuteClinic locations inside select Target stores will receive a $5 Target GiftCard .[2]

“Selecting a Medicare Part D plan can be confusing and stressful for patients. That’s why it’s important they understand the many plan options available to them,” said Kevin Hourican, Executive Vice President, Pharmacy Services and Supply Chain, for CVS Health. “By making our pharmacists available to help patients better understand their options and offering access to health insurance information at our stores and online, we’re arming patients with the tools they need to determine which plan best meets their health care needs.”

CVS Pharmacy does not endorse any specific Medicare Part D plan and accepts most major Medicare prescription drug plans. It is participating in several regional and national Part D preferred pharmacy networks which offer additional savings opportunities for Medicare beneficiaries, including no or low co-pays on generic medications.

During the Annual Enrollment period, Medicare beneficiaries can review their prescription coverage and enroll in a new plan for 2017 if they choose. Because Medicare Part D plans change each year and patients’ individual prescription needs may change, comparing plans could save hundreds of dollars.

As patients evaluate the available prescription drug plans, it is important for them to consider their annual deductible, premium and co-payments, as well as which plans cover the prescriptions they are taking, any out-of-pocket expenses, and if their pharmacy is included in the plan.
