CHESAPEAKE, Va., 2017-Nov-22 — /EPR Retail News/ — Dollar Tree, Inc. (NASDAQ: DLTR), North America’s leading operator of discount variety stores, today (November 21, 2017) reported results for its third fiscal quarter ended October 28, 2017.

“Our team delivered terrific results in the third quarter,” stated Gary Philbin, President and Chief Executive Officer. “Same-store sales accelerated in both the Dollar Tree and Family Dollar banners; we delivered a 120 basis point improvement in enterprise operating margin; and earnings per share grew more than 40% from the prior year. Our third quarter results demonstrate our continuing progress in delivering value and convenience, serving more customers in more markets across North America, through our diversified business model.”

Third Quarter Results

Consolidated net sales increased 6.3% to $5.32 billion from $5.00 billion in the prior year’s third quarter. Enterprise same-store sales increased 3.2% on a constant currency basis. Adjusted to include the impact of Canadian currency fluctuations, the enterprise same-store sales increase was 3.3%. The same-store sales growth was driven by increases in average ticket and comparable transaction count. Same-store sales for the Dollar Tree banner increased 5.0% on a constant currency basis (or 5.2% when adjusted to include the impact of Canadian currency fluctuations). Same-store sales for the Family Dollar banner increased 1.5%.

Gross profit increased 9.6% to $1.67 billion compared to $1.52 billion in the prior year’s third quarter. As a percentage of sales, gross margin increased to 31.3% compared to 30.4% in the prior year. The 90 basis point improvement was the result of lower merchandise costs, markdowns and occupancy costs as a percentage of sales.

Selling, general and administrative expenses were 23.3% of sales compared to 23.6% of sales in the prior year’s third quarter. The 30 basis point improvement, as a percentage of sales, was driven primarily by lower depreciation costs, lower healthcare costs and lower store operating costs resulting primarily from lower utility costs as a percentage of sales, partially offset by higher hourly payroll costs and incentive compensation as well as higher operating and corporate expenses resulting from higher advertising and store supplies costs and increased legal fees.

Operating income increased 24.2% to $425.2 million compared with $342.4 million in the same period last year and operating income margin increased to 8.0% of sales in the current quarter from 6.8% in last year’s quarter.

The Company’s effective tax rate for the quarter was 32.4% compared to 25.5% in the prior year period. The prior year’s third quarter included a one-time tax benefit of $21.4 million, or $0.09 per share, related to a 1% decrease in North Carolina’s state tax rate which decreased the deferred tax liability related to the trade name intangible asset.

Net income compared to the prior year’s third quarter increased $68.3 million to $239.9 million and diluted earnings per share increased 40.3% to $1.01 compared to $0.72 in the prior year’s quarter.

During the quarter, the Company opened 169 stores, expanded or relocated 23 stores, and closed six stores. Retail selling square footage at quarter end was approximately 115.8 million square feet.

First Nine Months Results

Consolidated net sales increased 5.3% to $15.88 billion from $15.08 billion in the same period last year. Enterprise same-store sales increased 1.8% on a constant currency basis and were also 1.8% when adjusted to include the impact of Canadian currency fluctuations. The same-store sales growth was driven by increases in comparable transaction count and average ticket. Same-store sales for the Dollar Treebanner increased 3.5%. Same-store sales for the Family Dollar banner increased 0.3%.

Gross profit increased 7.3% to $4.92 billion from $4.59 billion in the first nine months of 2016. As a percentage of sales, gross margin increased 60 basis points to 31.0% from 30.4% in the prior year period.

As a percentage of sales, selling, general and administrative expenses increased to 23.2% from 23.0% in the same period last year. The increase is the result of the $53.5 million Dollar Express and Sycamore Partners receivable impairment. The impairment charges are recorded as “Receivable impairment” in the accompanying condensed consolidated income statements. Excluding the receivable impairment, selling, general and administrative expenses improved to 22.9% of sales.

Net income increased 17.4% to $674.2 million from $574.4 million in the first nine months of 2016, and diluted earnings per share increased 16.9% to $2.84, compared to $2.43 in the prior year’s period. Excluding the $53.5 million receivable impairment, adjusted diluted earnings per share increased 22.6% to $2.98.

Company Outlook

The Company estimates consolidated net sales for the fourth quarter of 2017 to range from $6.32 billion to $6.43 billion, based on a low single-digit increase in same-store sales for the combined enterprise. Diluted earnings per share are estimated to be in the range of $1.80 to $1.89.

Consolidated net sales for full-year fiscal 2017 are now expected to range from $22.20 billion to $22.31 billion compared to the Company’s previously expected range of $22.07 billion to $22.28 billion. This estimate is based on a low single-digit increase in same-store sales and 3.7% square footage growth. The Company now anticipates net income per diluted share for full-year fiscal 2017 will range between $4.64 and $4.73, compared to its previous guidance of $4.44 to $4.60. This estimate includes $53.5 million, or $0.14 per diluted share, of receivable impairment charges incurred in 2017. Fiscal 2017 includes a 53rd week. The extra week, in the fourth quarter, is expected to add $400 million to $430 million to sales and $0.19 to $0.22 to diluted earnings per share, both of which are included in the guidance.

Philbin added, “Our stores and teams are well-prepared and energized as we enter the fourth and final quarter of 2017. We are confident in our ability to continue driving positive same-store sales, through meeting our customers’ needs and wants; improving enterprise operating margin; and delivering year-over-year earnings per share growth. We believe we are well-positioned in the most attractive sector in retail and will remain intensely focused on delivering great value and convenience to our growing customer base. Both banners are ready for the holiday season, and we have an experienced leadership team, momentum in our business and a continued focus on this transformational opportunity.”

CHESAPEAKE, Va, 2016-Nov-23 — /EPR Retail News/ — Dollar Tree, Inc. (NASDAQ: DLTR), North America’s leading operator of discount variety stores, today (November 22, 2016) reported results for its third fiscal quarter ended October 29, 2016. For the quarter, the Company earned $171.6 million, or $0.72 per diluted share.

Bob Sasser, Chief Executive Officer, stated, “I am proud of our team’s achievements in our third quarter. Our results demonstrated a solid performance in our Dollar Tree segment, continued meaningful progress in our integration of Family Dollar, and our ability to refinance and pre-pay a portion of our outstanding debt in order to reduce future interest costs. After adding back $0.09 per share of expenses related to our debt refinancing, our operating performance of $0.81 per diluted share was near the top end of our third quarter EPS guidance range of $0.76 to $0.82.”

Third Quarter Results

Net sales increased 1.1% to $5.00 billion from $4.95 billion in the prior year’s third quarter. The prior year’s quarter included sales from 325 Family Dollar stores that were divested following the third quarter of 2015. Same-store sales increased 1.7%, on a constant currency basis, compared to a 2.1% increase in the prior-year period. Adjusted for the impact of Canadian currency fluctuations, the same-store sales increase was 1.8%. The same-store sales growth, representing the Company’s 35th consecutive quarter of positive same-store sales, was driven by increases in comparable customer count and average ticket.

Gross profit increased 8.6% to $1.52 billion in the quarter compared to $1.40 billion in the prior year’s third quarter. As a percent of sales, gross margin increased to 30.4% compared to 28.3% in the prior year. The improvement was driven primarily by lower merchandise and freight costs. The prior year’s third quarter included $13.0 million of markdown expense for Family Dollar related to product assortment rationalization and planned liquidations, and $38.4 million for Family Dollar related to the amortization of the stepped-up inventory basis.

Selling, general and administrative expenses were 23.6% of sales compared to 23.8% of sales in the prior year’s third quarter. Excluding $11.8 million of acquisition-related costs from the prior year’s period, selling, general and administrative expenses, as a percent of sales, remained consistent at 23.6%. Increases in store hourly payroll, as a percent of sales, were offset by lower professional fees and lower depreciation expense, as a percent of sales.

Operating income increased 53.1% to $342.4 million compared with $223.7 million in the same period last year. Operating income margin increased to 6.8% in the current quarter from 4.5% in last year’s quarter. This increase in operating income is the result of a $61.2 million increase of operating income in the Dollar Tree segment, and a $57.5 million increase in operating income in the Family Dollar segment.

The Company’s effective tax rate for the quarter was 25.5% compared to 34.3% in the prior year period. The lower tax rate included an expected one-time tax benefit of $21.4 million, or $0.09 per share, related to a state reduction in corporate tax rate.

Net income compared to the prior year’s third quarter increased $89.7 million, or 109.5%, to $171.6 million, and diluted earnings per share increased to $0.72.

During the quarter, the Company opened 153 stores, expanded or relocated 39 stores, and closed 10 stores. Additionally, as part of its re-banner initiative, the Company opened 42 former Family Dollar store locations as new Dollar Tree stores. Retail selling square footage at the end of the quarter was approximately 112.0 million square feet.

First Nine Months Results

Consolidated net sales increased 48.9% to $15.08 billion from $10.13 billion in the first nine months of 2015. The $4.95 billion increase was the result of $4.36 billion in incremental net sales from Family Dollar stores, sales from new Dollar Tree stores, and a 1.7% same-store sales increase, on a constant currency basis. Adjusted for the impact of Canadian currency fluctuations, the same-store sales increase was 1.6%.

Gross profit increased $1.58 billion, or 52.7%, to $4.59 billion from $3.00 billion in the first nine months of 2015. As a percent of sales, gross margin increased by 80 basis points to 30.4% compared to the prior year period.

Selling, general and administrative expenses were 23.0% of sales compared to 23.9% of sales in the first nine months of 2015.

Net income increased $521.0 million, to $574.4 million, compared to the prior year’s first nine months, resulting in net income of $2.43 per diluted share.

Company Outlook

The Company estimates consolidated net sales for the fourth quarter of 2016 to range from $5.59 billion to $5.69 billion, based on low single-digit increases in same-store sales for the Dollar Tree and Family Dollar segments. Diluted earnings per share are estimated to be in the range of $1.24 to $1.33, an increase from the prior implied guidance of $1.21 to $1.30.

Consolidated net sales for full-year 2016 are now expected to range between $20.67 billion and $20.77 billion compared to the Company’s previously expected range of $20.69 billion to $20.87 billion. This estimate is based on a low single-digit increase in same-store sales, and 3.9% square footage growth. The Company now anticipates net income per diluted share for full-year 2016 will range between $3.67 and $3.76. This compares to its previous EPS guidance range of $3.67 to $3.82, which did not include the $0.09 per diluted share of expenses related to our debt refinancing incurred in the third quarter of 2016.

Sasser added, “I am encouraged by our continued progress in building the foundation for a larger, stronger and more profitable Family Dollar business. The stores are cleaner, the values are greater and our customer feedback scores regarding merchandise assortments and in-stocks have improved. As a combined organization, we are uniquely positioned to efficiently grow our businesses to better serve more customers in more markets. Dollar Tree, Inc. announces results for its second fiscal quarter ended July 30, 2016

CHESAPEAKE, Va., 2016-Aug-27 — /EPR Retail News/ — Dollar Tree, Inc. (NASDAQ: DLTR), North America’s leading operator of discount variety stores, today (August 25, 2016) reported results for its second fiscal quarter ended July 30, 2016.

Second Quarter Results

Second quarter fiscal 2016 results include nine additional weeks of operations for the Family Dollar segment when compared to the second quarter of fiscal 2015, which included four weeks of operations following the acquisition on July 6, 2015.

Net sales increased 65.9% to $5.00 billion from $3.01 billion in the prior year’s second quarter. The $1.99 billion increase was the result of an incremental $1.80 billion in net sales from Family Dollar stores, sales from new Dollar Tree stores, and a 1.2% same-store sales increase, on a constant currency basis. Same-store sales increased 2.7%, on a constant currency basis, in the prior-year period. Adjusted for the impact of Canadian currency fluctuations, the same-store sales increase was 1.1%. The positive same-store sales growth was driven by increases in customer count and average ticket.

Gross profit increased by $657.2 million, or 76.8%, to $1.51 billion in the second quarter compared to $855.2 million in the prior year’s second quarter. The increase included an incremental $588.4 million of gross profit for Family Dollar and a 9.2% increase in Dollar Tree’s gross profit for the quarter. This 60 basis point improvement was the result of lower payroll and operating and corporate expenses, as a percent of sales, partially offset by higher store repairs and maintenance expenses and depreciation expense.

Operating income increased 189.5% to $357.2 million compared with $123.4 million in the same period last year. Operating income margin increased to 7.1% in the current quarter from 4.1% in last year’s quarter. The Company’s effective tax rate for the quarter was 36.9% compared to a benefit of 31.1% in the prior year period. The increase is primarily attributable to a pre-tax loss in the second quarter of 2015.

Net income compared to the prior year’s second quarter increased $268.2 million to $170.2 million, and diluted earnings per share increased to $0.72.

Bob Sasser, Chief Executive Officer, stated, “I am very pleased with the Company’s overall performance in our second quarter. In our Dollar Tree segment, we improved our operating margin and delivered our 34th consecutive quarter of positive same-store sales.”

Sasser added, “Just over a year ago, we completed our acquisition of Family Dollar and our integration continues to progress as planned. The stores are cleaner, the values are greater and our merchandise assortments are improving. Additionally, we are taking the necessary steps to develop our shared services support model, and are continuing our focus on cost-related synergy capture. As a combined organization, we are well-positioned to better serve more customers, generate significant cash flows and deliver long-term value to our shareholders.”
