Kroger announces management changes in Ralphs

CINCINNATI, 2016-Jun-25 — /EPR Retail News/ — The Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR) today announced the retirement of Ralphs division President Donna Giordano, and the promotion of Valerie Jabbar to succeed her. Ms. Jabbar currently serves as vice president of merchandising for Ralphs.

Donna Giordano will retire from the company after 44 years of service, effective July 23.

“Donna’s distinguished leadership has helped Ralphs continue to grow, serve more customers in the highly-competitive Southern California market, and help Kroger across our business,” said Rodney McMullen, Kroger’s chairman and CEO. “She is respected throughout the industry and among our associates for her strategic leadership and engagement in the communities we serve. The entire Kroger family thanks Donna for her many contributions and wishes her and her family all the best in retirement.”

Ms. Giordano joined the company’s King Soopers banner as a courtesy clerk in 1972, while still in college. She was named store manager at King Soopers in 1982, and later held various director-level positions in key areas, including advertising, bakery, general merchandise, grocery, and pharmacy.  In 1999, Ms. Giordano was promoted to vice president of sales & marketing of King Soopers.  She was promoted to president of QFC in 2002 before being named to her current role in 2011.

Ms. Giordano volunteers with the Network of Executive Woman and is a past board member of the Orange County Girl Scouts. She is currently president of the Western Association of Food Chains (WAFC), where she has been a board member since 2005.

Ms. Giordano and her husband, Mario, plan to travel and spend time with their daughters Amber and Aubrey who reside in Seattle.

Valerie Jabbar Promoted to President of Ralphs

Kroger promoted Valerie Jabbar to serve as president of the company’s Ralphs division, effective July 23.

“Valerie is an exceptional leader who is passionate about developing associates and serving our customers and communities,” said Mr. McMullen. “She brings to her new role broad retail experience and a deep commitment to putting our customers first. We look forward to her continued leadership at Ralphs.”

Ms. Jabbar began her career with the company in 1987 as a clerk in the Fry’s division. She held numerous leadership roles at Fry’s, including assistant store director, category manager, and drug and general merchandise coordinator.  From 2002 – 2010, she served in a variety of drug and general merchandising leadership roles at Kroger’s general office in Cincinnati and in the Fry’s division. She was named Fry’s district manager  in 2010, and was promoted to serve as vice president of merchandising to the Mid-Atlantic division in 2012. Ms. Jabbar was promoted to her current role in the Ralphs division in 2013.

Company also Donates 3.4 Million Pounds of Fresh Food to Feeding America Partner Agencies

LOS ANGELES, 2016-Jan-21 — /EPR Retail News/ — Ralphs Grocery Company believes in giving back to the communities its store serve. In keeping with its commitment of giving, the supermarket company today announced that it contributed more than $6 million to local communities and charitable causes in Southern California, as well as 3.4 million pounds of fresh food to its Feeding America partner agencies.

These donations – which include donations made by Ralphs, the company’s charitable foundation, associates and through in-store fundraising – provided much-needed financial support to thousands of local schools, hunger relief agencies and non-profit organizations in Southern California communities where the company operates stores.

“Ralphs recognizes the importance of investing in the communities where our associates and customers live and work,” said Donna Giordano, president of Ralphs. “Giving back to our communities is an important part of Ralphs culture and social responsibility in Southern California.”Ralphs focuses its charitable giving in five key areas: hunger relief; K-12 education; advancement of women and minorities; women’s health; and grassroots opportunities. Among the charitable programs that Ralphs supported last year:

  • Fundraising for schools and local organizations – Ralphs donated $2.5 million to local schools and charitable organizations through our Community Contribution Program, which provides Ralphs Rewards Cardholders with the opportunity to have a percentage of their purchases donated to the non-profit of their choice.
  • Hunger relief – More than $400,000 and over 3.4 million pounds of fresh product were donated to local Feeding America-affiliated hunger organizations.
  • Breast Cancer Research – More than $240,000 was contributed to local breast cancer awareness programs.
  • Children’s Hospitals – Ralphs supported six children’s hospitals in Southern California.
  • Military Veterans Organizations – Proudly supporting the USO throughout Southern California.
  • Ralphs Volunteers – Ralphs’ charitable efforts were supported by more than 1,000 of its associates, who volunteered more than 2,500 hours to make our communities better.

Kroger family of stores to hire 20,000 employees

LOS ANGELES, 2015-9-1 — /EPR Retail News/ — Ralphs Grocery Company, and the entire Kroger family of stores, will hold open interviews on Tues., Sept. 15, for all veterans and their family members. Ralphs is hiring to fill an estimated 1,000 positions in its stores. Nationwide, The Kroger Co. is hiring to fill an estimated 20,000 permanent positions in its supermarket divisions.

Veterans and their family members need only to fill out on application online at by Sept. 13, and then return to a store on Sept. 15, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. (no appointment necessary).

Ralphs along with the entire Kroger family of stores hired more than 6,000 veterans in 2014, and has hired more than 29,000 veterans since 2009 as part of its commitment to active duty troops and the nation’s 23 million veterans through “Honoring Our Heroes,” a multi-faceted program the company designed to show its deep gratitude.

In addition, Ralphs along with the entire Kroger family of stores are proud to have helped the “100,000 Jobs Mission” surpass its original goal in January 2014, seven years early. The “100,000 Jobs Mission” is a coalition of more than 130 companies with the common goal of hiring more than 100,000 transitioning service members and military veterans by 2020.

Ralphs is asking applicants to input the hashtag #HonoringOurHeroes in the “Search by keyword” field at the top of applying online to be eligible for an in-store interview on September 15.

Through the Honoring Our Heroes program, Ralphs along with the entire Kroger family of stores have raised more than $11.9 million since 2010 to help support USO programs, which represents the largest cumulative gift to the USO in its nearly 75-year history.
