Gary Kinslow, SONIC Franchisee, wins the restaurant chain’s most prestigious award

Troy Smith Hall of Fame: Gary Kinslow

Named after SONIC’s founder, induction into the Troy Smith Hall of Fame is SONIC’s most prestigious award, given to a franchisee who has worked with SONIC for a notable amount of time while making a significant contribution to the brand in terms of leadership, growth and positive influence. This year, SONIC presented the Troy Smith Hall of Fame Award to Gary Kinslow, second generation SONIC franchisee and leader of Kinslow SONIC Group. Based in Prague, Okla., Kinslow SONIC Group owns and operates 40 SONIC Drive-Ins in Oklahoma, Texas and Mississippi. In 1969, Kinslow started his career at SONIC as a cook for his father when he was just 14 years old. Now, Kinslow leads his team to provide guests with a remarkable SONIC experience every day.

Chain Leader Award: Steve Gonzalez

The SONIC Chain Leader Award was presented to Steve Gonzalez, director of the Warren Group in recognition of his success in exerting both leadership skills and a positive influence on his organization and the SONIC brand. Based in Lubbock, Texas, and operating 24 drive-ins, Gonzalez focuses on retaining good people and building a solid infrastructure through his strong leadership.

Turnaround Operator Award: Norm Kaufman

Norm Kaufman, SONIC franchisee and leader of Brand Ventures, LLC was presented with the SONIC Turnaround Operator Award. This award honors an individual or group responsible for turning around operations, sales and profit performance of one or more SONIC Drive-Ins. Based in St. Louis, Mo., Kaufman focused on two areas: guest service and people development. The group has built strong, long-lasting relationships with their employees, demonstrating Kaufman’s belief that developing great people can help turnaround any aspect of business.

Great People Award: Buddy McClain

SONIC presented Buddy McClain, franchisee and leader of McClain, Vaughn and Partners franchise group, with the SONIC Great People Award. This award is given to an individual or group who has made the recruitment, training, development and retention of people a top priority and strategy for growth. Based in Jackson, Miss., McClain developed an innovative management program and is reaping rewards in his 100 drive-in locations across Mississippi, Texas and Florida.

Operational Excellence Awards: Eddie Frey and Jeff Simmons

The SONIC Operational Excellence Award was presented to Eddie Frey, operating partner for the D.L. Rogers Group, and to Jeff Simmons, general manager for the Jimmy Hodges franchise group. This honor is awarded to individuals responsible for supervision of less than five drive-ins with a proven track record of upgrading talent and growing sales and profits. Based in Elizabeth City, N.C., Frey started his career with SONIC as a manager trainee in 2003, and worked his way up to operating partner at three drive-ins located in Hartsville, S.C., Fayetteville, N.C., and Elizabeth City, N.C.Simmons, based in Mandeville, La., started his career with SONIC in 2011 in the kitchen and is now a general manager. Both Frey and Simmons make it a priority to attract guests, build loyalty and make a positive difference in their local communities.

Multi-Unit Leader Awards: Justin Chandler and Dora Simonds

Justin Chandler, director of operations for MHR Group, and Dora Simonds, director of operations for the Rubyhill Group are recipients of the Multi-Unit Leader Award. This honor is awarded to individuals responsible for supervising more than five drive-ins with a proven track record of upgrading talent, delivering outstanding guest service and growing financial performance of their drive-ins. Based in Dallas, Texas, Chandler oversees 16 drive-ins in the MHR Group and is known for his leadership and drive to constantly look for ways to improve in every aspect of the business, from people development to achieving great results. Simonds is the director of operations for 11 drive-ins in the Rubyhill Group across Denver, Colo. In 2000, Simonds started her career at SONIC as a cook and has grown to become a strong leader with a proven track record of developing talent while growing sales and profits.

Newcomer Award: Cinos, LLC

The Newcomer Award was presented to Cinos, LLC located on Long Island, N.Y. Cinos, LLC owns and operates three SONIC Drive-Ins in the state ofNew York. This award is given to an individual or franchise group new to the SONIC brand who delivers the SONIC promise to guests every day while achieving strong sales and profits.

Mason Development Award: Mason, Harrison, Ratliff, LLC (MHR)

The Mason Development Award was presented to MHR, a SONIC franchise group led by partners Ralph Mason, Chuck Harrison and Reeder Ratliff, who own and operate 288 drive-ins across 13 states with their partners. MHR has made outstanding contributions to the development of new drive-ins as we remodeled, rebuilt and relocated existing drive-ins. SONIC presented Gabe Pray, SONIC franchisee and leader of the Pray Group, with the SONIC Chain Leader Award. This award is given to an individual or group who has exerted both leadership and a positive influence on their organization and the SONIC brand. Based in Amite, La. and operating ten drive-ins, Pray is a second generation franchise owner who has made great investments in his people and has built a strong infrastructure within his franchise group.

Turnaround Operator Award: Grey Simpson

SONIC presented Grey Simpson, SONIC franchisee and leader of GM Investments, with the Turnaround Operator Award. This annual award honors an individual or group who was responsible for turning around operations, sales and profit performance of one or more SONIC Drive-Ins. Based in Charleston, S.C., Simpson is using emerging technology to turn his business around in amazing ways. With an increase in average unit sales and controllable profit in 2016 with plans for further expansion, Simpson has proven that a whole business approach will create a remarkable turnaround.

Great People Award: Joe Zacher

SONIC presented Joe Zacher, SONIC franchisee and leader of Zacher Enterprises, with the SONIC Great People Award. This award is given to an individual or group who has made the recruitment, training, development and retention of people a top priority and strategy for growth. Based in Denver, Colo., Zacher is focused on building his team and is reaping rewards in his six brand-leading drive-ins.

Multi-Unit Leader Awards: Habib Javed and Keven Briggs

SONIC presented Habib Javed, supervising partner for SONIC Restaurants, Inc. (the company’s subsidiary of corporate-owned drive-ins), and Keven Briggs, partner for the Watkins-Briggs Group, with the Multi-Unit Leader Award. This honor is awarded to two individuals responsible for supervision of five or more drive-ins who have a proven track record of upgrading talent and growing sales and profits over a period of several years.

Based in Norman, Okla., Javed is one of Sonic Restaurant Inc.’s most valuable team members after serving SRI for 25 years. Javed proves that by building great people, you can build a strong business.

Briggs is the supervisor of eight drive‐ins in a developing Florida market and he uses SONIC’s values as a touchstone for creating a culture that focuses on superior operations. With a tremendous passion for the SONIC brand, Briggs keeps his drive-ins performing above the rest with increased sales over the last two years.

Operational Excellence Award: Brian Markham and Stephanie Matthews

SONIC presented the Operational Excellence Award to Brian Markham, operating partner for the Cooper, Raynor, Young Group, and Stephanie Matthews, operating partner for the Cody Barnett Group. This honor is awarded to two individuals responsible for supervision of fewer than five drive-ins who have a proven track record of upgrading talent and growing sales and profits over a period of several years.

Based in Springfield, Tenn., Markham is a natural born leader with overall increased unit sales. Markham started his career with SONIC as a cook in 1993 and has worked his way up to now be an Operating Partner.

Matthews, based in Waco, Texas, is a tough competitor who loves to succeed and meet goals at her drive-in. She works hard to build loyalty, attract customers and is also dedicated to helping the local community.

Mason Development Award: Mike Irons

The Mason Development Award was presented to Mike Irons, SONIC franchisee and leader of Boom, Inc. This award is given to an individual or group to recognize outstanding contributions to the development of new drive-ins and brand growth. Based in Columbia, S.C., Irons and his group have adopted key brand strategies including relocations, rebuilds and building multiple new drive-ins over the next 5 years.

Dunkin’ Donuts U.S.

In 2014, Dunkin’ Donuts opened 405 net new restaurants in new markets such as California, Colorado, and Nevada, with 97% of domestic growth coming from existing franchisees. California continued to be a focus of growth for the brand with five new free-standing restaurants opening in Whittier, Santa Monica, Long Beach, Downey and Modesto, which opened ahead of schedule. The company is on track with its plan to open approximately 250 new restaurants in California over the next several years, with the long-term goal of having 1,000 restaurants in total throughout the state.

Dunkin’ Donuts also signed agreements in 2014 with franchisees to open new future restaurants in markets, including Northern, Central and Southern California; Oklahoma City, OK; Louisville, KY; Phoenix, AZ; Greensboro, NC; and Wichita, KS, among others.

In 2013, Dunkin’ Donuts unveiled new restaurant design options and last year Dunkin’ Donuts franchisees remodeled 482 restaurants with the new image. Dunkin’ Donuts also recently announced the launch of DD Green™ Achievement, a green building program designed to help franchisees build sustainable, energy-efficient restaurants. By the end of 2016, Dunkin’ Donuts plans to have 100 new DD Green restaurants across the U.S.

Dunkin’ Donuts’ 2014 development numbers include approximately 70 new restaurants in airports, colleges and other non-traditional locations. Dunkin’ Donuts currently has over 600 non-traditional locations, including restaurants at college campuses, mass transit stations, travel centers, supermarkets, entertainment centers and military bases.

In 2015, the Company expects its franchisees to add between 410 and 440 net new Dunkin’ Donuts U.S. restaurants and continues to believe that it can achieve the long-term goal of more than 17,000 restaurants in the U.S., more than doubling its current number of domestic locations.

Baskin-Robbins U.S.

In 2014, Baskin-Robbins achieved a second consecutive year of positive net new unit growth in the U.S., opening 17 net new restaurants in markets including Kentucky, California and Louisiana. Baskin-Robbins also signed agreements in 2014 with franchisees to open new future locations in markets, including Fresno, CA; San Francisco, CA; Phoenix, AZ; Tampa, FL, Louisville, KY; and Colorado Springs, CO, among others.

Additionally, recruiting military veterans as franchisees continues to be a focus for Baskin-Robbins. For 2014, the brand launched a special veteran’s incentive program for U.S. veterans seeking to open a domestic Baskin-Robbins location. The new development incentives included more than $25,000 in financial discounts on royalties and initial franchise fees.

In 2015, the Company expects its franchisees and licensees to open five to ten net new Baskin-Robbins restaurants in the U.S.
