SPAR Croatia reduces amount of salt in its bread by 1.4%

Amsterdam, The Netherlands, 2018-Feb-28 — /EPR Retail News/ — SPAR Croatia has reduced the amount of salt in its bread baked daily at the INTERSPAR bakery by 1.4%, in line with the World Health Organisation’s dietary recommendations.

Customers can now find bread baked with a lower volume of salt on the shelves of all INTERSPAR and SPAR stores in the country. The amount of salt in all 30 bread varieties has been reduced by 2% to the recommended 1,4% and in some cases even lower than the recommended amount. All the other ingredients remain the same – no additives were used to replace the salt and the bread is of the same high quality and taste.

“Through revising the recipe, SPAR Croatia is enabling positive change in our customers’ eating habits,” said Helmut Fenzl, CEO of SPAR Croatia.

This is part of a larger strategic plan to reduce the consumption of kitchen salt in Croatia from the current daily intake of 11.6 grams to 9.3 grams by 2019. This will consequently reduce the prevalence of arterial hypertension, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.

SPAR Croatia successfully converts 40 Billa stores into SPAR

Croatia, 2017-Aug-30 — /EPR Retail News/ — Earlier this year, SPAR Croatia’s acquisition of all Billa stores in the country was approved and within just two months, 40 Billa stores were converted to SPAR. The deal also included the takeover of the former Billa logistics centre.

The acquired stores are located throughout Croatia, from Istria to Dalmatia and from Slavonia to the capital, Zagreb. The sales areas of the stores vary from 500 to 1,500m².

All 1,900 Billa employees were incorporated into SPAR Croatia’s personnel. “We welcome our new colleagues and are delighted with the increase in the number of SPAR Supermarkets in Croatia,” said Helmut Fenzl, CEO of SPAR Croatia.

“The acquisition of Billa is an important strategic step and represents a new phase in the development of SPAR in the country.” With a market share of about 9%, SPAR is one of the major players in the Croatian food retail market.

More than just a new logo

The conversion of a Billa store involves more than just a new logo on the façade. It means strict planning, exact organisation, a complete system integration and of course, rapid induction of new SPAR employees. Teams of people from various departments such as Sales, Organisation, Controlling and IT from a number of Aspiag countries (Austria SPAR International AG) have to come together to ensure that all store conversions run as smoothly as possible. All cash desks have to be replaced and the scales re-installed and configured. About 8,000 articles need to be added to the system and 10,000 price labels per store reprinted and attached. It’s a challenging team effort but one that definitely pays off in the long run.

Integration of new SPAR colleagues

To introduce former Billa employees to the SPAR world, a programme of internal trainings were held. Helmut Fenzl, CEO of SPAR Croatia, and Danijel Vidiš, Managing Director of SPAR Croatia, presented the SPAR organisation and the SPAR story to the new colleagues as part of their welcome session. They also informed employees of the work and procedures involved in the acquisition process. SPAR Croatia currently employs over 4,000 people in SPAR and INTERSPAR stores, including former Billa stores.

SPAR Croatia opens first INTERSPAR Hypermarket in the shopping centre of Pula, Istria

Istria, Croatia, 2016-Oct-26 — /EPR Retail News/ — SPAR Croatia was overwhelmed with consumer reactions at the opening of the first INTERSPAR Hypermarket in Istria, based in the shopping centre of Pula.

“We are really delighted that investor MID Grupation entered into this co-operation, supporting us with the opening of the first INTERSPAR Hypermarket in Istria in the shopping centre of Pula. For the past 10 years, we have sought the ideal location and were pleased to have finally found it” said SPAR Croatia Managing Director, Helmut Fenzl, at the opening ceremony.

More than €3 million was invested by SPAR Croatia in the state-of-the-art store design of this latest INTERSPAR Hypermarket. This impressive store with a total sales area of 2,811m² incorporates a number of modern technologies. It is fully equipped with LED lighting thereby saving up to 15% of the normal annual energy costs. Furthermore, the waste heat from the cooling system is used to supply warm water and heating to the entire sales area. The investment into these technologies reflect the integration of sustainable solutions by SPAR Croatia.

The new hypermarket offers an extensive range for shoppers with 15,000 food products and 9,000 non-food products available. Of course, in the latest INTERSPAR, the support of local producers is evident, with an extensive range of local products including beer, wine, meat products, truffles, pasta and cheese in the offer.

During the festive opening, Mr Fenzl thanked the city of Pula and the entire team involved in supporting this project and confirmed that SPAR Croatia looks forward to continuing the co-operation with all partners. The expansion of SPAR Croatia in the region of Istria will be strengthened with the focus on the opening of SPAR Supermarkets in the future.
