Kroger invests in a new anaerobic digester at its manufacturing plant in Greensburg, Indiana as part of its Zero Hunger | Zero Waste initiative

Company’s second anaerobic digester supports Zero Hunger | Zero Waste goals

CINCINNATI, 2018-Jan-30 — /EPR Retail News/ — The Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR) announced today (Jan. 26, 2018) the successful startup of a new wastewater treatment system—an anaerobic digester—at K.B. Specialty Foods, a manufacturing plant owned and operated by the company in Greensburg, Indiana.

“Kroger recently announced its Zero Hunger | Zero Waste initiative, an exciting plan to end hunger in the communities we call home and eliminate waste in our company by 2025,” said Erin Sharp, Kroger’s group vice president of manufacturing. “With 33 of our 36 plants already reaching the Zero Waste manufacturing goals we established several years ago, these facilities have pioneered the way for us to achieve our moonshoot vision.”

K.B. Specialty Foods, which employs 270 associates and produces deli salads, cake icing and refrigerated side dishes, has been a Zero Waste facility since 2014, diverting more than 90 percent of waste produced from landfills each year, and is now home to the company’s second anaerobic digester.

The new $9.5 million anaerobic digester, which replaced a conventional wastewater treatment system, features a dome that captures biogas from food byproducts at the plant and converts it into energy through anaerobic digestion while also improving air quality.

“We invested in the digester because it improves our sustainability performance, supports better air quality and provides a cost savings to the company,” Ms. Sharp explained. “Once the digester is operating at its optimal level, we project it will have the capability to produce nearly 30 percent of the plant’s electricity.”

Kroger’s first anaerobic digester, which converts organic materials into renewable biogas, was installed in 2013 at the Ralphs-Food 4 Less distribution center in Compton, California.

“One of the four drivers of our company’s Restock Kroger plan is to Live Our Purpose through social impact,” Ms. Sharp added. “Our associates remain committed to reducing our impact on the environment by using natural resources responsibly and minimizing waste throughout our operations to help us achieve our Zero Waste goals.”

Kroger’s K.B. Specialty Foods announces new anaerobic wastewater treatment system at its facility in Greensburg, Indiana

GREENSBURG, Ind., 2016-Nov-21 — /EPR Retail News/ — The Kroger Co.’s (NYSE: KR) K.B. Specialty Foods this week broke ground on a new anaerobic wastewater treatment system at its facility in Greensburg, Indiana.

The modification will turn food production byproducts into energy and will also lead to improved air quality in the area.

“This is one more step toward meeting our goal of becoming a zero waste company by 2020,” said Suzanne Lindsay –Walker, Kroger’s director of sustainability.

K.B. Specialty Foods employs 270 and produces deli salads, cake icing, and refrigerated side dish products that are popular all over the country.

The current wastewater treatment system in the facility is open to the air. The new system will feature a dome that will capture biogas from food byproducts at the plant. The collected biogas will then be harnessed to generate electricity.

ADI Systems, the project builder, says the new facility relies on a process called anaerobic digestion.  Microorganisms will transform the byproducts of food production into the biogas.  ADI Systems says that process provides “a source of renewable energy that can be used to displace fossil fuels.”  The electricity created will be sent to the plant’s electrical grid.

K.B. Specialty Foods expects the new system to be operational next summer.

Every day, the Kroger Family of Companies makes a difference in the lives of eight and a half million customers and 431,000 associates who shop or serve in 2,781 retail food stores under a variety of local banner names in 35 states and the District of Columbia. Kroger is recognized as one of America’s most generous companies for its support of more than 100 Feeding America food bank partners, breast cancer research and awareness, the military and their families, and more than 145,000 community organizations including schools. A leader in supplier diversity, Kroger is a proud member of the Billion Dollar Roundtable.

DEERFIELD, Ill., 2016-Feb-25 — /EPR Retail News/ — As part of Walgreens comprehensive national plan to combat drug abuse, Walgreens today announced it has made naloxone, a potentially lifesaving opioid antidote, available without a prescription in all of its Indiana pharmacies in accordance with state pharmacy regulations.

Naloxone is now more accessible and easier to obtain in nearly 200 Walgreens pharmacies throughout Indiana. The medication can be used in the event of an overdose to reverse the effects of heroin or other opioid drugs, and is administered by injection or nasal spray.

“By making naloxone available without a prescription, we are making it easier for Indiana families and caregivers to help their loved ones in need,” said Chris Creamer, Walgreens Regional Healthcare Director in Indiana. “We are committed to making naloxone more accessible in the communities we serve.”

Earlier this month, Walgreens announced plans to make naloxone available without a prescription in 35 states and Washington D.C. in accordance with each state’s pharmacy regulations. In states where a prescription is required, Walgreens is available and eager to work with regulators to help update rules to allow for dispensing of naloxone without a prescription.

The medication is available in Rhode Island and Massachusetts without a prescription in accordance with state regulations. Walgreens began expanding the program earlier this month at Walgreens pharmacies throughout the state of New York, and has now expanded that access to Indiana and Ohio. When implementation of the program is complete, naloxone will be available without a prescription in more than 5,800 of Walgreens nearly 8,200 stores.

“We need all hands on deck to stop the unrelenting wave of opioid drug and heroin overdose deaths,” said Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller, creator and co-chair of the Indiana Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention Task Force. “I’m particularly grateful Walgreens has stepped up to keep naloxone stocked in its stores, available for loved ones and others who may be in a position to save the life of someone struggling with addiction. Walgreens rollout of safe medication disposal kiosks is also key to encouraging people to clear out medicine cabinets and changing the perception that these powerful painkillers and other opioids are safe.”

When naloxone is dispensed instructions are provided on how to administer the medication, which includes calling 911 as naloxone is not a substitute for medical care, and anyone who is administered the medication should seek immediate medical attention.

Drug abuse continues to be a public health and safety risk. In 2014, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported a total of 47,055 drug overdose deaths, which include prescription and illicit drugs. That is a 6.5 percent increase from 2013 and a 140 percent increase since 2000.

Walgreens also will be installing safe medication disposal kiosks in more than 500 pharmacies in 39 states, including Indiana. The medication disposal kiosks allow individuals to safely and conveniently dispose of their unwanted, unused or expired prescriptions, including controlled substances, and over-the-counter medications, at no cost. The kiosks at Walgreens pharmacies will be available during regular pharmacy hours (24 hours a day at most of these locations) and will offer one of the best ways to ensure medications are not accidentally used or intentionally misused by someone else. The initial installation of the safe medication disposal kiosks has begun in California and is expected to be completed at more than 500 Walgreens locations this year.
