Wakefern Food Corp. recorded retail sales of $16.3 billion for the 52-week fiscal year ending September 30, 2017

Keasbey, NJ, 2017-Nov-01 — /EPR Retail News/ — Wakefern Food Corp. Chairman and CEO Joseph S. Colalillo, President and COO Joe Sheridan and Executive Vice President Chris Lane addressed Wakefern shareholders, store management and staff at the company’s annual shareholder meeting October 26 in East Brunswick, NJ.

The company reported record retail sales of $16.3 billion for the 52-week fiscal year ending September 30, 2017, a 1.5 percent increase from the prior year. The largest retailer-owned cooperative in the United States, Wakefern and its members opened four new ShopRite® stores, two The Fresh Grocer® stores and two Price Rite® Marketplace stores during the same period.

“Our family-owned-and-operated supermarkets and their dedicated associates supported by knowledgeable and innovative Wakefern staff make the difference in this business and serve as the foundation for our strength and success,” Joseph Colalillo told an audience of nearly 900 people at the Hilton in East Brunswick.

Colalillo announced the retirement of Neil Duffy, President, Price Rite Marketplace, a registered trademark of Wakefern with 64 grocery stores in nine states.

“Neil’s dedication and hard work helped grow the popular Price Rite brand over the last 12 years, and we thank him for his service to Wakefern,” said Colalillo.

He also announced the retirement of Larry Collins from Wakefern’s Board of Directors and the addition of Patrick J. Burns, CEO of Burns’ Family Neighborhood Markets, to the board.

“We thank Larry for his service and commitment to the board. He will remain active in the cooperative and his own company, Collins Family Markets, which operates ShopRite stores in Philadelphia, Eddystone and Glenolden, PA,” noted Colalillo. “We welcome to the board Patrick Burns, who brought The Fresh Grocer stores into the cooperative in 2013. We look forward to working with Pat and the rest of the board to shape future success.”

Joe Sheridan recapped the company’s accomplishments over the last year, including its expansion of ShopRite’s popular Wholesome Pantry line of products made with simple, clean ingredients, and the introduction this year of its newest own brand, ShopRite Trading Company.

Wakefern shareholders re-elected to the Board of Directors at Thursday’s meeting include: Joseph Colalillo, Chairman and CEO; Larri Wolfson, Irv Glass and Dominick J. Romano, Vice Chairmen; Lawrence Inserra, Jr., Treasurer; Jeffrey Brown, Assistant Treasurer; Richard Saker, Secretary; and Ned Gladstein and Nicholas Sumas, Assistant Secretaries. Joe Sheridan was also re-elected as President and COO, and Chris Lane was elected as Executive Vice President.

ShopRite of Hunterdon County President Joseph S. Colalillo recognized by Food Marketing Institute

Keasbey, NJ, 2017-Feb-11 — /EPR Retail News/ — The Food Marketing Institute (FMI) has recognized ShopRite of Hunterdon County President Joseph S. Colalillo for his work as an entrepreneurial and industry leader who helps businesses better serve consumers. Colalillo, a second-generation grocer, owns and operates five ShopRite stores in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and also serves as Chairman and CEO of Wakefern Food Corp., the largest U.S. retailer-owned cooperative in the country and the merchandising and distribution arm for ShopRite stores.

“Joe is a straight-talking, honest broker of goods and services and he inspires our industry to maintain its relevance by his keen commitment to doing what is right for the customer,” said FMI President and CEO Leslie G. Sarasin. “Joe is a champion of new ideas and he has consistently embraced new industry initiatives that empower businesses to better serve the consumer.”

Sarasin presented Colalillo with FMI’s Wegman Award at the institute’s mid-winter executive conference late last month. FMI is a leading advocate for the food retail industry and the award recognizes entrepreneurial leadership in the design of retail strategies and imaginative merchandising.

Colalillo’s commitment to the supermarket industry is rooted in tradition and a passion for the business.
Founded nearly 70 years ago by Colalillo’s father, Joseph A. Colalillo, ShopRite of Hunterdon County today owns and operates ShopRite stores located in Flemington, Greenwich, and Clinton, NJ; and Yardley and Bethlehem, PA., and employs more than 1,800 associates.  In addition to his role as president of the family business, Colalillo has also served as chairman and CEO of Wakefern Food Corp. since 2005.

“It’s an honor to be recognized by FMI, and I am accepting this award on behalf of all our associates who work in our stores and help make ShopRite of Hunterdon County a successful company,” said Colalillo. “I’m proud to be part of the grocery industry and to work closely with other members and Wakefern staff in our cooperative to create the very best supermarkets we can for our customers.”

Colalillo serves on the Board of Directors for FMI and he is a past chair and a current member of FMI’s Food Safety committee.  He also serves on FMI’s Member Services, Independent Operator and Strategic Planning committees.

He has been recognized in the past by FMI for launching consumer-facing technologies, initiating seafood sustainability programs, cultivating associate engagement and implementing health and wellness solutions in ShopRite stores. Colalillo is also a member of one of FMI’s non-competitive share groups that exchanges new ideas to better its businesses, the industry and the communities which they serve.

A past member of the New Jersey Food Council’s Board of Directors, Joe received the Food Council’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005 for his contribution to the food industry and service to the community. He has also served on the Board of Directors of Choose New Jersey, an organization formed in 2010 to recruit new businesses to the state.

He holds a bachelor’s degree from Villanova University. Colalillo and his wife Jeannie have four children.

Wakefern Food Corp. announces 4.2% retail sales increase for the 52-week ending Oct. 1, 2016 vs. the prior year

Keasbey, NJ., 2016-Oct-31 — /EPR Retail News/ — Wakefern Food Corp. Chairman and CEO Joseph S. Colalillo and President and COO Joe Sheridan addressed Wakefern shareholders, store management and staff at the company’s annual shareholder meeting today (Oct. 27, 2016) in East Brunswick, New Jersey.

The company reported record retail sales of $16 billion for the 52-week fiscal year ending Oct. 1, 2016, a 4.2 percent increase from the prior year. The cooperative opened 11 new ShopRite® stores, two The Fresh Grocer® stores, one Price Rite® and one new format store, Dearborn Market,® during the same period.

“Wakefern marks its 70th anniversary this year, and we are proud of our history of success and service in the communities where our family-owned and operated supermarkets are located. We’ve grown and changed a lot in the past 70 years, but our founding entrepreneurial spirit and principles remain the same.  We will continue to grow and innovate to provide our customers with the very best shopping experience,” Colalillo told a gathering of 900 people at the Hilton in East Brunswick.

Colalillo announced the retirement of two members from Wakefern’s Board of Directors: Robert Clare, president of the ShopRite of Oakland, Inc., and Richard McMenamin, chairman of McMenamin Family ShopRite, LLC.

“We thank Bob and Rich for their service, wisdom and expertise on the board. Both men will remain active in their own companies and with the cooperative,” said Colalillo, who also welcomed new board members Sean McMenamin, president of McMenamin Family ShopRite, LLC, and Shawn Ravitz, vice president of administration for Supermarkets of Cherry Hill, Inc.  “We look forward to working with our new board members and the entire board as we shape our future successes.”
