CVS Pharmacy introduces automated retail vending machines for on-the-go wellness solutions

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2017-Sep-08 — /EPR Retail News/ — CVS Pharmacy, the retail division of CVS Health (NYSE: CVS), today announced that the company is introducing automated retail vending machines stocked with convenient, on-the-go necessities including over-the-counter health products, “better-for-you” snacks and popular personal care products typically sold at CVS Pharmacy locations nationwide. The new vending machines are designed to help maximize convenience and meet customers where they are with on-the-go wellness solutions outside the traditional retail space.

“We are always looking for new ways to combine convenience and innovation to help better serve our customers,” said Judy Sansone, Senior Vice President of Front Store Business & Chief Merchant at CVS Pharmacy. “Our new CVS Pharmacy vending machine program allows us to extend that convenience beyond our brick-and-mortar locations to offer customers on-the-go essentials in the locations where they often need them most, like airports, hotels and other transportation hubs.”

Each vending machine will be customized with offerings to fit each location with more than 70 products to choose from, including many from exclusive CVS Pharmacy store brand lines like CVS Health, Beauty 360, Gold Emblem and Gold Emblem Abound. Products available in the vending machines include:

  • Over the counter remedies for allergy, pain relief, digestive health, and cough and cold

These machines enhance customer convenience with strategic placements in areas well-trafficked by local residents and travelers alike who may need products in a pinch, eliminating the need to make a special trip to a retail location. CVS Pharmacy is also considering an additional 50+ locations throughout the country including college campuses, corporate offices, hotels and other transportation hubs to host vending machines in the future.

“These new vending machines allow us to make our innovative CVS Brand products available to customers outside of our store locations for the very first time,” said Cia Tucci, Vice President of Store Brands and Quality Assurance at CVS Health. “The CVS Pharmacy vending machines will be located in places where we can bring our customers smart solutions and convenient access to the products they trust when they are on-the-go.”

To help customers navigate this new shopping experience, the vending machines, will feature a 22″ multi-touch screen, high resolution images with expansive product information and a QR code reader to read barcodes and promotional codes. The machines will be ADA compliant, allowing those in wheelchairs to fully access the touchscreen and its functionality, and will accept all major credit and debit cards.

CVS Pharmacy is a trusted health and beauty destination for more than 5 million shoppers every day. The new vending machines, along with recent nationwide store design enhancements and expanding digital programs, represent the company’s ongoing efforts to evolve the retail customer experience in stores and beyond. CVS Pharmacy launches new campaign to increase awareness on skin health, sun safety and the importance of proper skincare

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2017-May-16 — /EPR Retail News/ — Launching this month from CVS Pharmacy, the retail division of CVS Health (NYSE: CVS), is the new multi-platform Long Live Skin campaign aimed at increasing awareness around skin health, sun safety and the importance of proper skincare.

The Long Live Skin Campaign kicks off today (May 15, 2017) on https://www.cvs.com/longliveskin and on CVS Pharmacy social handles with a video where women share “advice to their younger self.” The women offered their guidance on a variety of life topics including love, loss, courage, and embracing both inner and outer beauty. The campaign was designed to inspire advice sharing across generations of women and will also include shorter videos that focus on skincare and beauty routines. Women are invited to join the conversation with @CVSPharmacy by using the #AdviceToMyYoungerSelf hashtag on Instagram and Twitter.

The Long Live Skin campaign will start by focusing on proper sun safety during May, which is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. The campaign will continue throughout the summer and will include in-store signage with information and tips on sun protection and skincare, additional videos with skincare advice shared via social, digital and radio, as well as special weekly ExtraCare offers on skincare, sun care and more.

“We are proud to launch the Long Live Skin campaign to educate and engage consumers around skincare, and this program is a natural extension of CVS Pharmacy’s ongoing efforts to help customers on their path to better health,” said Judy Sansone, Senior Vice President of Front Store Business & Chief Merchant at CVS Pharmacy. “Taking good care of your skin is part of taking care of your health, so we’re making it easier than ever for our shoppers to access the information and products they need, including those with greater skin health benefits.”

In addition, CVS Pharmacy and Johnson & Johnson have partnered with the American Cancer Society to create exclusive content for in store signage, cvs.com and the CVS Pharmacy circular. CVS Pharmacy Beauty Consultants will share the information and tips on the importance of proper sun care and skin health with customers. Johnson & Johnson will donate $1 for every Neutrogena or Aveeno product with SPF 15 or higher purchased from June 18-24 to the American Cancer Society to help prevent skin cancer.

“We applaud CVS Pharmacy for working on a campaign to educate and empower consumers to be more proactive regarding skin health,” said Dr. Richard Wender, American Cancer Society Chief Cancer Control Officer. “We are thrilled to participate in this partnership that focuses on skin cancer prevention and early detection to help ensure a healthy and safe summer for everyone.”

The Long Live Skin campaign is also supported by other initiatives focused on healthy skincare and the importance of sun protection:

  • CVS Pharmacy is the only national retailer to remove all sun care products with SPF lower than 15 from shelves, and has added more than 30 new SPF+/broad spectrum products that either meet or exceed FDA standards.
  • By the end of 2019, all parabens, phthalates and formaldehyde donors in beauty and personal care products within the CVS Health, Beauty 360, Essence of Beauty, Promise Organic and Blade store brand product lines will be removed.
  • 70% of CVS Pharmacy pharmacists address patient questions related to skin concerns each day. In response, CVS Pharmacy is launching a new Skin Solution section in the pharmacy checkout in 4,000+ stores on June 25 with education and dermatologist-recommended products for top chronic/episodic skin conditions like acne, rosacea, scarring, rashes, sunburn and more.
  • New brands with greater skin health benefits are launching throughout 2017, from preventative and proactive skincare with increased SPF, to more dermatological-approved options as well as additional natural and organic products.

CVS Pharmacy introduces new store design to enhance retail customer experience

CVS Pharmacy introduces new store design to enhance retail customer experience

Reimagined store design, new health services, an expanded offering of health and beauty products and “better-for-you” food options rolling out

Company will also remove certain chemicals from its beauty and personal care products and is developing new standards for vitamin and supplement offerings

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2017-Apr-22 — /EPR Retail News/ — CVS Pharmacy, the retail division of CVS Health (NYSE: CVS), today unveiled a new store design to enhance the retail customer experience with a new assortment of healthier food, health-focused products and expanded beauty selections paired with informational signage throughout the store to help customers discover new offerings. Together with its innovative digital programs, these changes represent the next evolution of the customer experience at CVS Pharmacy.

“Pharmacy is the heart of our business and our focus on providing care to patients and customers defines everything we do in our stores,” said Helena Foulkes, President of CVS Pharmacy and Executive Vice President, CVS Health. “Our new retail offerings leverage our deep expertise in health to enhance our customers’ shopping experience. The same guiding principles that led to the removal of tobacco from our stores extend to our commitment to deliver the most innovative health and beauty solutions.”

The new store formats and deeper focus on expanded health, healthier food and beauty assortments are key elements of the next phase of the front-store growth strategy, which was first introduced in 2015. Today there are over 800 CVS Pharmacy locations nationwide with this elevated design and assortment and over 3,400 with expanded food and beauty offerings. The latest improvements are designed to drive growth in categories that are most closely tied to the Company’s health-focused purpose and expertise, while delivering a shopping experience that no other online or brick-and-mortar retailer can replicate.

“We did a lot of research to understand how to best serve our customers as we began to reimagine our store experience and we found that people are thinking about their health differently and taking a more proactive approach to staying well,” said Judy Sansone, Senior Vice President, Front Store Business and Chief Merchant. “With that in mind, we crafted a new shopping journey, all in the name of better health.”

Evolution of Store Design
“Our strategy for our new stores is not one-size-fits-all. We will continue to evolve the store experience as we test and learn in order to meet the needs of our customers in the ever-changing retail landscape,” added Foulkes. “As we identify key elements that resonate, such as new product assortments, health services and other in-store experiences, we will find ways to bring them to life in CVS Pharmacy locations nationwide.”

CVS Pharmacy is rolling out major changes to as many as 70 new and existing stores this year, with plans to expand to several hundred more in 2018. The new, health-focused formats have 100 feet of new merchandise in health, beauty and healthier food and use a streamlined layout to highlight themes that make shopping easier. “Discovery zones” in key health categories take a holistic approach to care and product selections, and customers are guided by informational signage with guidance to make finding the right solution easier.

Sick-Care to Self-Care
CVS Pharmacy is vastly expanding its offerings throughout health with a broader selection of vitamins and supplements, including offerings from specialty brands like Irwin Naturals and New Chapter, as well as expanded nutrition products like Vega and Naturade protein powders and Navitas Organics Superfood Mix Ins. Assortments tied to emerging areas like connected health, sleep/mood and immunity are merchandised in “discovery zones” that offer holistic solutions and easy navigation through educational displays.

Beauty with Purpose
CVS Pharmacy continues to enhance the beauty shopping experience by adding new, “on-trend” beauty brands like Wunder2 and Tigi Cosmetics, as well as products that have greater skin health benefits and more natural ingredients. To help improve customer exploration and inspiration, a new “trend wall” has been added to 2,000 stores featuring new launches and niche brands. A beauty discovery zone highlights on-the-go options at checkout. This month, an exclusive Korean Beauty selection curated by notable K-Beauty expert, Alicia Yoon, will be available in over 2,100 locations.

Healthier Foods
Even more “better-for-you” food options are being added, including 27 new items under the exclusive Gold Emblem Abound product line. Healthier choices, including Alo Exposed Waters, EPIC bison bars and That’s It. bars will make up approximately 50 percent of all food options found throughout the store. Additionally, products that fit nutritional and dietary preferences including heart healthy, good source of protein, gluten free, sugar free, organic and non-GMO project verified, are highlighted with shelf tags. This summer, the tags will expand into non-food categories, making it easier for customers to make purposeful choices throughout the store.

Making Better Easier with Higher Standards
The catalyst for the evolution of the retail stores was CVS Pharmacy’s decision in 2014 to stop selling tobacco. As part of its ongoing commitment to corporate social responsibility, CVS Pharmacy is taking the following steps:

  • Removing certain chemicals from beauty and personal care lines: By the end of 2019, all parabens, phthalates and formaldehyde donors in products within the CVS Health, Beauty 360, Essence of Beauty, Promise Organic and Blade store brand product lines will be removed.
  • New standards for vitamins and supplements: CVS Pharmacy is embarking on the development of new standards for vitamins and supplements, with the goal of full implementation by 2019. The standards will require third-party testing of ingredient listings for vitamins and supplements, as well as product testing for certain ingredients of concern.

CVS Pharmacy was also the first national retail pharmacy chain to announce the removal of artificial trans fats from all exclusive store brand food products. In addition, the company recently removed all sun care products with SPF lower than 15 from its shelves while expanding products with SPF 30/broad spectrum, natural beauty brands and products focused on skin health.

Redefining Personalized and Digital Convenience
In addition to the in-store changes, the mobile experience and ExtraCare Rewards program continue to evolve, offering more ways for customers to order products online and pick them up with CVS Curbside, pay seamlessly via CVS Pay in the app, and even manage their ExtraBucks Rewards, personalized deals, and use manufacturer coupons, all from their phone.

The new developments from CVS Pharmacy were previewed at a media event yesterday during an interactive brand showcase in New York City. More details, including photos from the interactive brand event, can be found in the CVS Health newsroom.

CVS Pharmacy continues to evolve into a premier health destination with the removal of partially hydrogenated oils from all exclusive store brands food products

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2017-Feb-23 — /EPR Retail News/ — CVS Pharmacy is the first national retail pharmacy chain to announce the removal of partially hydrogenated oils (PHO), the primary source of artificial trans fats in processed foods, from all its exclusive store brands food products. The retailer now offers over 600 exclusive snack and grocery options which are free from artificial trans fats. This comes a year and a half ahead of the Food and Drug Administration’s deadline of June 2018 for processed foods to be reformulated without artificial trans fats, underscoring the company’s ongoing commitment to customers’ health. Linked to rising rates of heart disease in the U.S., the removal of artificial trans fats in processed foods is expected to aid in reducing coronary heart disease and help prevent thousands of fatal heart attacks every year. With its purpose of helping people on their path to better health, CVS Pharmacy continues to ensure its own store brands demonstrate quality and innovation that match or exceed industry standards, while offering the best possible value.

“We applaud CVS Pharmacy for working proactively to remove artificial trans fats from its store brands products well in advance of the federal deadline,” said Dr. Eduardo Sanchez, Chief Medical Officer for Prevention at the American Heart Association. “The early removal of trans fats in all CVS Pharmacy store brands products will help to improve overall heart health and prevent heart disease for many Americans.”

“At CVS Pharmacy we are dedicated to helping our customers lead healthier lives, and moved quickly to ensure all of our snack and grocery store brands products are free from artificial trans fats,” said Judy Sansone, senior vice president front store business & chief merchant, CVS Health. “Our commitment to producing high quality products reinforces that CVS Pharmacy is a leading health destination.”

Effective since the start of January, all snack and grocery store brands products developed by CVS Pharmacy and shipping to distribution centers are free from artificial trans fats. The early removal of artificial trans fats from all store brands products follows a significant expansion of healthy foods to stores nationwide throughout 2016. This initiative is a critical step as the company continues to evolve into a premier health destination, providing millions of customers healthier food options that are convenient, affordable and innovative. Other initiatives include:

  • The nationwide roll-out of the exclusive store brand CVS Health, a flagship line of more than 2,500 health and wellness products focused on effective and affordable care as well as unexpected innovations spanning 19 categories.
  • Moving healthy foods towards the front of stores.
  • Dedicating roughly 25 percent of front checkout space to better-for-you snacks.
  • Introducing healthy eating trend zones that showcase carefully curated selections of paleo, raw and vegan snacks at key periods throughout the year.
  • The “Fit Choices” shelf tagging program, helping customers easily find healthier items in stores by clearly identifying products that fit nutritional and dietary preferences including heart healthy, good source of protein, gluten free, sugar free, organic and non-GMO project verified.

CVS Pharmacy is also committed to expanding its exclusive Gold Emblem abound snack and grocery line to provide customers with additional wholesome, great-tasting products that are free from artificial preservatives and flavors. The line offers a variety of products that are gluten-free, USDA organic, non-GMO project verified, heart healthy, low sodium, high in protein, a good source of fiber or sugar-free.
