Walgreens Boots Alliance’s commitment to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals Honored

NEW YORK, 2016-Oct-22 — /EPR Retail News/ — The United Nations Foundation’s 2016 Global Leadership Awards Dinner will tonight honor Walgreens Boots Alliance, Inc. (Nasdaq: WBA) for its commitment to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals through its support for wellbeing around the world. The award recognizes, in part, the accomplishments of Walgreens highly successful Get a Shot. Give a Shot.® initiative, which provides life-saving vaccines to children in developing countries through the Foundation’s Shot@Life campaign. Walgreens Boots Alliance’s Co-Chief Operating Officer Ornella Barra will accept the Global Leadership Award on behalf of the company.

“I am deeply honored to accept the Global Leadership Award from the United Nations Foundation on behalf of all of my dedicated colleagues and the customers who make the program possible,” commented Barra. “While much work remains, we are very proud of the progress we have made, in partnership with our customers and the UN Foundation, to ensure that millions of children are immunized against diseases that could cost them their lives. Walgreens Boots Alliance is committed to helping people around the world lead happier, healthier lives and this program is an important part of our mission.”

“The world has set ambitious goals to improve lives and livelihoods around the world, including by achieving health and well-being for everyone by the year 2030,” said UN Foundation President and Chief Executive Officer Kathy Calvin. “Walgreens Boots Alliance has raised the bar through its strong commitment to the world’s most vulnerable citizens, who are often protected from a lifetime of deadly or debilitating diseases, including children who benefit from the Get A Shot. Give A Shot. campaign.”

One in five children worldwide lacks access to life-saving immunizations, and a child in a developing country dies every 20 seconds from a vaccine-preventable disease. Get a Shot. Give a Shot. donates a polio or measles vaccine to a child in need for every immunization administered at a Walgreens, Duane Reade or Healthcare Clinic location in the United States. The program has helped to provide more than 15 million vaccinations to countries such as Tanzania, East Timor and Chad since 2013.

Get a Shot. Give a Shot. is one of a range of programs that Walgreens Boots Alliance champions to improve health and wellbeing around the world. This month, through a partnership with Vitamin Angels, Walgreens reached its goal set two years ago of helping to provide 100 million children and mothers in at-risk populations with essential vitamins and minerals to help combat malnutrition.

Through a partnership with the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer, the company has funded a pan-European biobank for colorectal cancer to find new ways to treat this deadly disease. In addition, as the exclusive retailer of Red Nose Day in the United States, Walgreens has helped raise more than $31 million to benefit children’s health through Comic Relief USA. A partnership between Boots UK and Macmillan Cancer Support helps provide access to the best cancer information for patients and caregivers across the UK.

Walgreens and United Nations Foundation to provide vaccines to children in developing countries through 2016 Get a Shot. Give a Shot.® campaign

DEERFIELD, Ill., 2016-Sep-30 — /EPR Retail News/ — Walgreens and the United Nations (UN) Foundation today (September 28, 2016) announced the launch of the 2016 Get a Shot. Give a Shot.® campaign, a fourth-year collaboration to help provide life-saving vaccines to children in developing countries. Now through Aug. 31, 20171, for every flu shot or other immunization administered at Walgreens pharmacies, Healthcare Clinics, or Duane Reade pharmacies, Walgreens will donate the value of a life-saving vaccine through the Foundation’s Shot@Life campaign.

With the support of Walgreens customers, the campaign has helped to provide more than 15 million polio and measles vaccines since the program’s inception in 2013. Shot@Life is a movement to protect children worldwide by providing life-saving vaccines where they are most needed through the UN and other partners.

“Get a Shot. Give a Shot creates a unique opportunity for our customers to play an active role in helping to protect millions of children from vaccine-preventable diseases,” said Alex Gourlay, Walgreens president. “This campaign is one of the many ways in which we’re helping to improve immunization rates among targeted populations, both here in the U.S. and across the globe. It’s gratifying to see the impact Walgreens and its customers are making to champion everyone’s right to be happy and healthy.”

According to the UN Foundation, 1 in 5 children worldwide lack access to life-saving immunizations, and a child dies every 20 seconds from a vaccine-preventable disease. Coordinated worldwide vaccination efforts have made significant progress, particularly reducing cases of measles and polio.

“Families everywhere deserve the opportunity to keep their children safe from preventable diseases like measles and polio. Get a Shot. Give a Shot gives Walgreens customers a chance to support the health and wellbeing of children around the world while taking care of their own health needs,” said Kathy Calvin, president and CEO of UN Foundation. “At the UN Foundation we believe every child deserves a shot at a healthy life. Walgreens’ support of the Shot@Life campaign is an important part of making that vision a reality.”

“Since the age of three when I contracted polio in my family’s village in Nigeria, I have experienced firsthand the challenges faced due to this disease that is preventable with a polio vaccination,” said Dennis Ogbe, an ambassador for the United Nations Foundation’s Shot@Life program and 2016 Get a Shot. Give a Shot. spokesperson. “Through programs such as Walgreens Get a Shot. Give a Shot., children in developing countries will have access to these critical vaccines. No child should have to live with the lifelong consequences of polio. Every child should have a shot at life.”

Walgreens locations in most states offer a wide range of 17 CDC-recommended vaccines, subject to availability, including those to protect against influenza, shingles, pneumonia, pertussis (whooping cough), meningitis, hepatitis and other diseases. Vaccinations are available during all pharmacy and Healthcare Clinic hours, including nights, overnights at 24-hour pharmacy locations, weekends and holidays, with no appointment necessary.

Age restrictions vary by state at Walgreens pharmacies, while Healthcare Clinics can provide immunizations for patients age 2 and older. Other restrictions may apply.

The UN Foundation’s Shot@Life campaign collaborates with many organizations and corporations to broaden American support for childhood immunizations in developing countries against diseases like pneumonia, diarrhea, measles and polio. Together, these partners are working with Shot@Life to benefit UNICEF, the World Health Organization and other implementing partners to save lives and improve the health of millions of children around the world through life-saving vaccines.

Walgreens: Get a Shot. Give a Shot kicks off its third and most comprehensive campaign

Third year of program enables Walgreens customers to help protect millions of children in developing countries from polio and measles

DEERFIELD, Ill., 2015-9-8 — /EPR Retail News/ — Over the last two years, Walgreens has helped to provide 7 million life-saving vaccines to children in developing countries through the Get a Shot. Give a Shot® campaign, and its growing collaboration with the United Nations Foundation. Today, Get a Shot. Donations will be made through the UN Foundation’s Shot@Life campaign, a movement to protect children worldwide by providing life-saving vaccines where they are most needed through the UN and other partners.

“Get a Shot. Give a Shot demonstrates the important role our customers can play, and how a flu shot or other immunization can truly make a world of difference,” said Alex Gourlay, Walgreens president. “We’re extremely proud of the global impact the program has made. And as we expand our relationship with the UN Foundation, our objective is to also increase our donation over last season to help provide more life-saving vaccines to children who need them most.”

Statistics show 1 in 5 children worldwide lack access to life-saving immunizations, and a child dies every 20 seconds from a vaccine-preventable disease2. Coordinated worldwide vaccination efforts have made significant progress, particularly reducing cases of measles and polio.

“Vaccines protect and improve the lives of millions of children in developing countries each year,” said Kathy Calvin, president and chief executive officer of the UN Foundation. “The prevention of measles deaths has been the single largest contributor to reducing childhood deaths over the last decade and we are now so close to ending polio. By expanding our partnership with Walgreens, we can support UN efforts to help children access these life-saving vaccines around the globe.”

#giveashot Social Campaign

Customers and patients getting their flu shot at any of Walgreens points of care are being encouraged to share the moment through their social networks to help spread the word about the Get a Shot. Give a Shot campaign. People are asked to take and share “selfies” displaying their red bandage, using the hashtag #giveashot through Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. On Fridays through mid-November, Walgreens will select the best images to appear in a share-back video, which will be posted via the company’s social channels on Twitter and Facebook.
