CVS Pharmacy introduces new ScriptPath Prescription Schedule for patients who manage multiple prescription medications

CVS Pharmacy introduces new ScriptPath Prescription Schedule for patients who manage multiple prescription medications

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2017-Oct-05 — /EPR Retail News/ — CVS Pharmacy, the retail division of CVS Health (NYSE: CVS), today (Oct. 4, 2017) introduced its new ScriptPath Prescription Schedule for retail pharmacy patients who manage multiple prescription medications. The ScriptPath Prescription Schedule features all of a patient’s current CVS Pharmacy prescription information in one place including which medications the patient takes, when the patient should take them, and how much of each medication should be taken in each dose. Using easy to understand icons, the new schedule was designed to improve patient understanding and enhance patient safety by simplifying how patients take medications and how caregivers give them.

“Fifty percent of patients struggle with understanding how and when to take their prescription medications, and for those with complex prescription regimens it can be even more challenging,” said Troyen Brennan, M.D., M.P.H., Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer, CVS Health. “By providing them with a clear and concise dosing schedule, which incorporates all of their current CVS Pharmacy prescriptions and reduces the number of times a patient takes medication each day, we can help improve medication adherence and, ultimately, health outcomes.”

The Prescription Schedule is the first offering in the company’s ScriptPath prescription management system. Other tools, including a new prescription vial label, are expected to roll out in early 2018. The ScriptPath Prescription Schedule is the latest in a wide array of pharmacy care tools that CVS Pharmacy is offering patients to help with medication management and improve medication adherence. The schedule is generated by a robust scientific system, created by CVS Pharmacy, that automatically reviews all of a patient’s current CVS Pharmacy prescription information and prescribers’ instructions, and then, using clinical data, provides a schedule of the most effective times of day to take the medications.

Available in English and Spanish, the ScriptPath Prescription Schedule is available at all of CVS Pharmacy’s more than 9,700 retail pharmacy locations nationwide, upon request. Because the Prescription Schedule will be most helpful to the more than nine million CVS Pharmacy patients who take more than five medications each day, those patients will be offered a consultation with the store pharmacist when they pick up their prescriptions. The pharmacist will review the Prescription Schedule and the information it provides.

“At CVS Health, we are committed to helping people on their path to better health. One of the main ways we can do that is to help our patients remain adherent to their medications,” said Kevin Hourican, Executive Vice President, Pharmacy Services, CVS Pharmacy. “Patients who take their medications as prescribed have better health outcomes than those who do not. By providing our patients with the personalized information and guidance needed to manage their medications, and most importantly, making it easier to understand and follow prescribers’ directions, we can help them remain adherent and better maintain their overall health.”

Prescription information that is highlighted on the new ScriptPath Prescription Schedule includes:

  • Personalized prescription information for the individual patient, including how much medication to take and when to take it
  • Medications separated into sections for Routine, As Needed and Other medications
  • Clear refill instructions for easy refills
  • Notes section for further personalization and to facilitate face-to-face pharmacist counseling

The ScriptPath Prescription Schedule provides a dosing schedule that maximizes the effectiveness of medications and simplifies complex medication regimens, taking into account the individual patient’s current CVS Pharmacy prescriptions.

CVS Health partnered with Deborah Adler, a designer known for her past work on Target’s ClearRx prescription packaging system, to ensure all of the elements of the new ScriptPath prescription management system were easy for patients to read and to understand. Adler, the inventor and lead designer of the new ScriptPath system, worked with the CVS Health team to develop the easy-to-understand icons and an intuitive layout for each of the ScriptPath offerings.

“I am excited to have collaborated with CVS Health on its ScriptPath prescription management system,” said Deborah Adler, Owner of Adler Design. “We are delivering a simpler, more effective way for people to take their medicine. Design matters in health care and this is a powerful example of how design can play a key role in changing behavior and improving health outcomes.”

CVS Pharmacy to build new distribution center at the Skyport Industrial Park in Kansas City, Mo

America’s leading retail pharmacy plans to open 762,000 sq. ft. center in 2018

KANSAS CITY, Mo, 2016-Dec-19 — /EPR Retail News/ — Gov. Jay Nixon today (December 14, 2016) announced that major retailor CVS Pharmacy will build a new 762,000 sq. ft. distribution center in Kansas City, Mo, at the Skyport Industrial Park. The company’s expansion is expected to create more than 360 new jobs in the region.

“Missouri recently reached record employment, with more folks back at work in our state than ever before,” Gov. Nixon said. “Today’s announcement by CVS Pharmacy to create 360 new jobs in Kansas City will continue this momentum, and is great news for area families. Once again, Missouri has shown the nation that we are open for business with a strong and growing economy.”

With access to key road systems in the region, the planned distribution center will support the service and fulfillment needs of more than 370 CVS Pharmacy stores throughout the Midwest. CVS Pharmacy expects to break ground on the 71-acre property in January 2017 and immediately start construction on the facility. The new distribution center is expected to begin operations in 2018.

“This new distribution center is an integral part of CVS Pharmacy’s continued growth as a leading pharmacy, health and beauty destination,” said Kevin Hourican, Executive Vice President, Pharmacy Services & Supply Chain, CVS Health. “The key combination of a high-quality workforce and a centralized location will allow us to better serve the growing needs of our customers throughout the Midwest and beyond.  As a result of our new Midwest distribution center, our delivery drivers will drive hundreds of thousands fewer miles each year to deliver product to our stores, significantly reducing carbon emissions and improving highway safety.”

The new distribution center is expected to add more than 360 new jobs to the Kansas City area, as well as an additional 70 to 100 jobs that will be outsourced to local businesses.  It adds to CVS Pharmacy’s network of 18 distribution centers nationwide.

“CVS’ decision to locate this regional distribution center in Kansas City affirms the transportation infrastructure advantages of this region and the competitive costs for distributing to the greater Midwest from here,” said Chris Gutierrez, President, KC SmartPort, the authority on logistics and opportunities in the 18-county, bi-state Kansas City region.

“On behalf of CVS Pharmacy, we are thrilled to grow our presence in the Kansas City business community. This new location will help us enhance support for our expanding distribution needs in the Midwestern market,” said Ron Link, Senior Vice President of Logistics at CVS Pharmacy.  “We want to thank state and local officials for their cooperation and support during our site selection process.”

“Kansas City is experiencing a large industrial boom and continues to be center of choice for regional and national distribution due to our region’s abundant multi-modal transportation network,” said Kansas City Area Development Council President and CEO Tim Cowden. “We are pleased that CVS Pharmacy chose the KC region and look forward to its future success.”

Missouri is helping the company recruit candidates for the new positions which are expected to be hired starting in early 2018. Additionally, Kansas City approved the company for local personal property tax abatement. The Missouri Partnership also assisted with the company’s expansion to the state.

CVS Pharmacy to assist patients in determining the best Medicare Part D prescription drug plan during enrollment period for 2017

WOONSOCKET, R.I., 2016-Oct-17 — /EPR Retail News/ — CVS Pharmacy, the retail division of CVS Health (NYSE: CVS), announced today (Oct. 14, 2016) that it will offer an extensive array of in-store and online resources to assist senior patients in determining the best 2017 Medicare Part D prescription drug plan during the Annual Enrollment period. Open enrollment for Medicare Part D begins October 15 and ends December 7, 2016.

Convenient access to information about local and national Medicare Part D plans will be available to patients in both English and Spanish at all 9,600 CVS Pharmacy locations nationwide. In addition, more than 11,000 informational events will be held in select CVS Pharmacy stores across the country during the Open Enrollment period where representatives from local health plans will provide Medicare Part D information to eligible patients and answer any questions they may have.

CVS Pharmacy’s online Health Insurance Information Center, www.cvs.com/Medicare, offers information on available Medicare Part D plans. The website features information that helps seniors find a plan in their community and guides them on how to enroll. For seniors evaluating Medicare Part D plans, they can enter their prescription information and zip code to compare plans available to them. Patients can also find a listing of store informational insurance events in their community.

“Selecting a Medicare Part D plan can be confusing and stressful for patients. That’s why it’s important they understand the many plan options available to them,” said Kevin Hourican, Executive Vice President, Pharmacy Services and Supply Chain, for CVS Health. “By making our pharmacists available to help patients better understand their options and offering access to health insurance information at our stores and online, we’re arming patients with the tools they need to determine which plan best meets their health care needs.”

CVS Pharmacy does not endorse any specific Medicare Part D plan and accepts most major Medicare prescription drug plans. It is participating in several regional and national Part D preferred pharmacy networks which offer additional savings opportunities for Medicare beneficiaries, including no or low co-pays on generic medications.

During the Annual Enrollment period, Medicare beneficiaries can review their prescription coverage and enroll in a new plan for 2017 if they choose. Because Medicare Part D plans change each year and patients’ individual prescription needs may change, comparing plans could save hundreds of dollars.

As patients evaluate the available prescription drug plans, it is important for them to consider their annual deductible, premium and co-payments, as well as which plans cover the prescriptions they are taking, any out-of-pocket expenses, and if their pharmacy is included in the plan.

CVS Pharmacy reminds patients of prescription needs before Hurricane Matthew hits

WOONSOCKET, R.I.,, 2016-Oct-07 — /EPR Retail News/ — As Hurricane Matthew nears the coast of Florida and the Southeast, CVS Pharmacy, the retail division of CVS Health (NYSE: CVS), is reminding patients to make sure they have taken care of their prescription needs before the storm hits. In addition, CVS Pharmacy is moving generators into these areas and stocking stores with emergency items, such as bottled water, batteries, flashlights and first aid supplies.

“In light of the weather advisories and evacuation orders now in effect in Florida,Georgia and South Carolina, CVS Pharmacy is working hard to ensure that our customers have the medications they need to ride out the storm safely,” said Kevin Hourican, Executive Vice President, Retail Pharmacy and Supply Chain for CVS Health. “To help facilitate this, we have been working with insurers to allow for early refills in certain cases and since the storm warnings have begun, we have been reaching out to our pharmacy patients via text message and email where possible to remind them to refill prescriptions in advance of the hurricane.”

Patients who live in areas that are expected to be affected by the storm, and who have opted in to CVS Pharmacy’s automated notification programs, may receive automated phone calls, text messages, and mobile app notifications, depending on the status of their current prescriptions. These messages can help patients in several ways, including letting them know when their prescription is ready to be picked up, reminding them that their prescription is ready to be refilled, and informing patients where they can pick up their medications during emergency situations such as Hurricane Matthew.

“In addition, through CVS Caremark, our pharmacy benefit management company, we have activated a process that allows us to provide one-time emergency refills of a 10-day supply of medication for plan members impacted in the areas affected by Hurricane Matthew,” Hourican added.

When preparing for a hurricane, CVS Pharmacy offers customers the following tips:

  • Create a plan for evacuating and finding a safe destination.
  • Store all of your medications, along with a written record of your current prescriptions, in a waterproof container and keep it with you at all times. This is especially important if you take multiple prescriptions. Medical equipment, batteries or power cords, eyeglasses and hearing aids are important to keep with you as well.
  • In the event of an emergency when you are away from home, find a pharmacy nearby to fill necessary prescriptions. CVS Pharmacy can fill its customers’ prescriptions at any of its 9,600 locations nationwide, including CVS Pharmacy inside Target locations.
  • Create an emergency kit before the storm hits and make sure you have all essentials in case of power outages. Your local CVS Pharmacy carries all of the critical items needed including bottled water, masking tape, flashlights and batteries.
  • For a full list of tips on being prepared for a hurricane, visit the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s website, https://www.ready.gov/hurricanes.

To find a CVS Pharmacy near you, visit the store locator at http://www.cvs.com/.

Following the storm, CVS Pharmacy is also prepared to assist with hurricane recovery efforts in impacted communities, by planning for water and ice donation events at area stores and keeping in close contact with first responders to offer support in affected areas as needed in the coming days and weeks.
